You've always had a few strange ideas about the universe. Theories, almost, although you'd never describe them as anything so formal. “Feelings” would be better, but you were always taught never to rely on your feelings.

First of all, you've always believed that the world was a rational place. Flawed, perhaps, but rational. Guided by some invisible hand, some higher power that makes sure everything works as intended – roughly. You're not sure that you'd call it “God”, but it's certainly something. The second idea, and this is one that you'd keep to yourself no matter what tortures you were threatened with, is that you've got a guardian angel. Something like that, anyway, that's always been looking out for you and keeping you safe. Maybe it's your mother – it's not something you can prove or anything.

In either case, they're not ideas that you could share with your father. A man of science, he's not the type to put much value in baseless speculation. If anything, he actively dislikes the idea of faith – he views God with a weary kind of contempt that you find somehow distasteful – so you've learned to keep certain ideas to yourself. Which isn't to say you don't get on well with him – if anything, you've got a better relationship than most.
