What is the best way to play out an epic battle for a party ? Have them as a special squad with a very important mission ? Have them lead men to battle ? Or just have them in the middle of it all fighting hundreds or thousands of mook as a shock force ?

I don't like it when fantasy and magic is reduced to science and explained, but I'm also not a fan of fireballs and dragons all over the place.

I'm a fan of mystery and adventure where magic is more of curses and illusions practiced by discrete occultists rather than stereotypical wizards and the fantasy races aren't just humans with a different physical trait and forced into one personality. I like to reflect the unknown aspect of earlier history where people were insular and uneducated, most don't know what exactly is over the mountains etc. Lots of races are geographically isolated and interact just as much as the Romans did with the Chinese, basically everything you hear about the other side of the world is a rumor.

However I don't like the idea of it being a dark and dirty medieval, I like comfy too much so my villagers are usually well-fed and clean, not so much hardship in most of the world. Different regions have different themes, one is a dark hellsing country with vampire aristocracy oppressing the people and witch hunts all over, while other areas are flourishing cultures with decent kings and not much goes on aside from minor monster attacks.

I like them fairly exotic, like Tekumel, Talislanta, Planescape and Numenera. The less ye olde medieval fantasy the better, though completely weird stuff like HOL or Wraith ain't my bag either.

I like worlds that are Earth but fantasy, but I do love worlds that are pretty strange, although I have never really played them outside of videogames. Atleast in the Elder Scrolls series, Vvardenfell in morrowind is very alien and very strange, with really only some of the local flora looking like regular plants. Meanwhile Cyrodiil and Skyrim being basically earth, with animals found in real life.

So tonight will be the second night of me GM'ing my homebrew campaign.

Week 1 went by mostly without a hitch save for a few kinks when trying to keep my players on task with the campaign without having to railroad them. I also stumbled a bit a few times when having to improv something up on the spot.

Learning how to improv sadly only really works by doing it. Way I started was by reducing the load on what I had to improv. By having clear ideas about one concept beforehand (what kind of towns and hooks are by the players, or what kind of aesthetics of the world, or what personality of random NPCs) can help you focus on less per session. Another good idea is to get in the habit of reading things out loud in your spare time. By reducing the amount of uhs/umms in your common speech, you will feel a lot more comfortable.

Excellent and succinct. I would add that at least for me, improving well gets easiest when you know your own setting and it's actors, factions,etc.

I find it much more coherent when I improv on what people will DO rather than what they ARE.

Being creative on the spot sucks, being comfortable enough to alter what you already have rocks.

I can't tell you much without more insight into what you play, how, and how it went specifically.

Railroading is such a loose term, it's like saying North without saying where you start from.

Generally you want to give the players agency in the story. That can mean many things, but at least it should mean that when a direction has to be chosen in story terms, they should realize that and make an informed decision. As GM it is your job to convey that.

So in general... Do accents and not voices.

About improv, one way i found easy for me was to plan a small scale for the adventure and try to plan how my players would work so i mostly made small quest untill i knew well my group. But if you're trying to make a small campaing you could make then in chapters, chapter 1 you introduce the npc's and the situation the second part you make who the PC's can reach the goal, trying to make small safes incase your pc's miss stuffs, tip then at specific encounter if you want then to suspect especific npc, tell then to roll the equivelent of sense motive, if you want then to find a clue at a place TELL THEN to make a test, but never say to then for what the test is. If they come with idea themselfs and you find it's reasanoble you could put it together on the campaing, and chapter three would be the final encounter the conclusion.

At least that is how i do it.

I've run into a snag while developing a setting for general "sandboxing" use.

The history of it involves the introduction of a curse instead of the supposed "confusion of tongues" in Biblical times, one which inflicts the existing people and anyone that "gains awareness of their own existence" with the loss of one of their senses.

The important part is that their body is physically unaffected, but they are inexplicably unable to comprehend the sensation after the curse is activated; a significant amount of people who claim to be blind/deaf/etc. would be seen with a justified skepticism.

Can you help me extrapolate the first city's reaction to this curse?

I also inquired /sci/ since I felt it had a scientific angle, but maybe this hour wasn't the best for them.

I do wonder what the Architects' reputation will be after the fall of the tower.
They made humanity Sensebound. But they also have the means to redirect the damage.
God only helped out in the Architects' one project (the Lenses). But they could've spun it into God being pleased with humanity.
The general public does not know about the Lenses project, but the city's organized crime surely does.
As for the Architect that directly caused this, he had no choice but to flee. The others had their discussions with him many times, but pinning this tragedy on him to absolve themselves of blame instead of sharing equal fault would be best for the city, if not for humanity.

Way back in my roleplaying days, AFMBE was the game I would master. I have lots of fond memories of it, I remember it being pretty complex but fun.

I also have the Army of Darkness one, but I've never had the chance to play it sadly.

Unisystem was great. But it is dated now, just like Fuzion. It's greatest strength was the franchises it could secure, just like Fuzion. It fell off the map as soon as people realized you don't have to play AGAINST your system, you can actually abandon that DnD heritage and change the game into anything that works.

Cinematic Unisystem was at the cutting edge of that development, and it had some great ideas. But it didn't come together like Burning Wheel or Spirit of the Century. It got marginalized because of that and today trudges ahead on its franchises (which are excellent!).

A lot of publishers didn't embrace digital media and lost what little market they had with FLGSs when those places turned into MTG dispensaries. So there was no money to keep the system up to date or purchase new licenses. Look at Margaret Weiss Productions who survived by putting everything in licenses and then bleeding the fans dry over years with the empty promise of a working system to coalesce eventually.

AFMBE remains THE reference for zombie settings. Regardless of the crunch, the fluff advice is pure gold. And the crunch isn't bad, it's just not as fast or as narrative (Unisystem classic) as modern games are.

We recently took up AFMBE. Must say we've had alot of fun with it so far. System is not too bad, though a bit limited (it uses the D10 system, prefer the d100 myself). The fluff and crunch is rather cool, specially since our DM can throw his twisted imagination at us.

The system allows for a lot of customisation in my short experience. It gives stats for a broad range of improvised weapons. Half the fun is pimping your vehicle and fashioning something remotely like a weapon, all the while terrified some zombies charges at you.

The big draw is using lots of knights, in link teams. Otherwise you're running what might as well be an NCA army. LI link team, a big big stompy HI, sort of affair.
