Passive-Aggressive Hipster "Self-Aware" GM Bullshit

No.43352819 ViewReplyLast 50ReportDelete
I'm having trouble with my GM right now. Every fucking week he thinks he's being clever by "subverting" the "genre conventions" of high fantasy and trying to make every player character look like a buffoon.

The first warning sign came right at the start of the campaign. Our adventuring party strolled into town, offered our services, and were promptly run out of town because the local church disapproved of mercenaries. Later we took out a contract to avenge a farmer's brother by killing a basilisk that killed him, only to get chewed out by local authorities after the fact because the basilisk was the only natural predator of the dire wolves in the area.

It's been downhill from there. Trying to sell items we've picked up off of dead enemies have gotten us disgusted remarks about grave robbery and looting the dead. Killing an ogre who was tormenting the countryside immediately resulted in a sobbing ogre wife trying to explain that her husband was just trying to barter back some sheep that were stolen from him. Killing kobolds to save nobles have resulted in disgusted comments about how barbarous and violent we are from the people we're trying to save.

I asked the GM if he had a problem with the way we were playing the game, but he just gave me in a smug "no, I'm just trying to make the world react to what you're doing in a "realistic" way" sort of response.

Is this salvagable? Should I just find another game? I can't take this anymore.

Generically-titled Fire Emblem Quest Gen. 2 #1

!hpSHZaglII No.43376443 ViewReplyLast 50ReportDelete
>Hello and welcome to the second installment of our quest! This is, of course, a quest hoping to thematically feel like Fire Emblem. Occasionally pictures when appropriate, but more often than not there will not be.

>It takes place in its own world, the continent of Teege, opening up in the frigid mountains of Tordo.

>Soon, you will be thrust into what little of the plot has been predetermined.

>While in theory this quest will have two, count 'em, two questmasters, Octoling and Grandflaw, historical precedent says that one of us will quickly end up more active than the other.

>Now for some basic rulesy shit, barely altered for clarity's sake from Gen 1's opener!

>Character death! This is Fire Emblem, it happens (we’re not casuals here), but we won’t just kill off characters for no reason unless the death ties into the plot. Even those might be subverted with enough unanticipated elbow grease, however. Make good decisions, and maybe no one has to die!

>Write-ins are encouraged! Sculpt the character you want to play as, just don’t get too salty if it doesn’t pan out that way. These things never play out as initially expected. Not even for us.

>Our first posts will outline the options for the character’s backstory, and from there the classes that can be selected for each history.

>Voting periods will last an average of ten to fifteen minutes.

>The first decision of this quest, the start of player character creation, will be in the post right after this one. This is a new quest with new characters, so to any prospective newcomers, it's never too late to step in!

>Our update Twitter is qmgrandflocto, and we have an ask.fm with the same title. If you did want to read up on the previous generation, its summaries and list of chapters is here: http://pastebin.com/Q77ts75m

Why is wanting power seen as so villainous within fiction?

Guys like Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon are seen as heroes in our culture.

Star Wars: Fortune Hunter Quest #3

PREVIOUSLY: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/43144651/

“Alright, Lev, R5, you two watch the ship. Don’t let anybody aboard, make sure the R-22 gets a good coat of paint, and if you see anything funny looking, call me on the comms.” You point to your wristmounted communicator. “You got that?”

Lev and R5 stand outside the Barloz freighter, listening to your instructions. Kashyyyk has changed quite a bit since the Clone Wars. It was still quite the planet of forests and trees, but nowadays the Empire has billed Kashyyyk as sort of a poor man’s Manaan. It was a big resort place for the working class people from Kuat Ship Yards, Onderon, and Cato Neimoidia. As a result, things were not very pleasant for the native Wookiees, who despite their fearsome reputation seem to have again been enslaved by a galaxy spanning empire. You suppose that those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it maybe. You’ve had a few dealings with Wookiees, they are still quite honorable and noble.

But honor and nobility helps no one in this galaxy, at least not anymore. You cross your arms as Lev responds to your instructions. “We understand, Master Cykgil. We will defend the ship with our lives if at all possible.” He looks down at R5. “However, the R5 unit will most likely be the sole casualty.”

“What are you talking about?” asks R5. He spins his head to Lev.

“Astromechs are expendable. Tactical droids are not,” Lev states.

“How’s this for expendable.” R5 immediately rams into Lev’s leg, nearly knocking him over.

“Ow.” Lev kicks R5, knocking him over. “Ha. Ha. Ha. Get up so I can kick you again.”

“Okay, knock it off you two!” you yell. Lev looks over at you, immediately assuming parade stance. R5 simply lies there, unable to get up under his own power. That’s what you get for scavenging the poor thing. “Lev. You understand. Now make sure nobody touches the ship.”

>Taken from another thread...

>In the Forgotten Realms, the setting which AD&D used as its flagship, two of the five major Elven subraces were brown
>Sun Elves, the most magically powerful of the elves were known as Bronze or Brown skinned with light or golden hair
>Wild Elves, also known as wood elves, tended to have brown skin with flecks of green or green areas near the extremities, they were physically tougher than other elve subraces

>However due to TSR being afraid of marketing anything that wasn't a Strong White Male, we rarely saw characters that were not.

>So is it safe to say terrible marketing and dare I say, a fear of inclusion, led to the fact that most people don't know the biggest D&D setting had brown elves since the 80s?
With artists and most writers told to ignore that shit, it make sense why there's no recognition.

>It gets even worse when you look into some of the religions of the Realms, few people could tell you that one of the most famous Sun Bros is a brown skinned girl whose family was from the jungles of Chult.

While I thought this was bullshit at first, I checked the wiki and saw the attached image.

How the fuck do they spend so many years just fucking it up?

Trapped in Da'ta Quest 4

Simon Dal'tross was worried, mostly about the strange events that seem determined to take hold of his already strange life. He had led armies in a land so tainted one would think they were marching straight into hell itself, he had seen the flesh of men, women, and children twisted into abhorrent monstrous shapes, and then he saw the same monsters return to his lines and charge back into battle against the hordes of hell itself. But he had never seen anything like this, and the fact it was so mundane made him worry far more.

The old worn knight captain shakes his head, standing up from the halfed goblin's corpse as he looks around this ramshackle fort in the mud, if he could even call it that, it couldn't compare to places he has seen before.

He sighs, shaking his head as he watches his men carry away the corpses they found here.

Goblins, he thinks to himself, simple creatures who often turned vile by those of their kin who would so lead them. I have dealt with them before, but only as minor nuisances plaguing roads and harassing travelers, never attempting to build something like this with a plan to overrun a tolardarian city, no matter how small.

He sighs again, why can't the fortunes of life ever give him even the smallest of respites from all this hardship and madness. It's all he ever asks is for something as simple as a peaceful life from time to time. Not like it'll happen, ever since his life went bad the council of seven have seen him as their personal hammer with which to smash anything that displeases them. A duty he hates thoroughly, he'd rather do something nice, like tend flowers or maybe run an orphanage for those who lost their families in the war...maybe cook.

Hey folks.
I'm putting together a game of Vampire: The Requiem 2nd edition for some IRL friends. The plan is instead of a political game for sobbing goths, it would instead base it around the idea of warring bloodlines fighting in a West Coast city (probably 80's LA or '90s Seattle), kinda gunning for a vibe like The Warriors. I've read all the bloodline books but I'm having problems picking a tightly focused group of them. A few are obvious choices (Khaibit, Bruja). Can I pick your brains on this?
