One thing a lot of collections are doing is going over their stock to see how much is actually genuine and where the bits came from.
Though several notable private collections have resisted attempt to authenticate items so anything that they offer for sale is treated as suspect. One common scam is trying to pass off 16th-19th century maille from India or the Ottoman empire as medieval european armor.
