Halflings. best character I ever played was a halfling guard, his sense of duty obligated him to the main plot but he was still a halfling at heart and really just wanted to sit by the fire and read his books. The whole race is always fun to play as for me.

Crossbreeds of normal races. Half orcs, half elves, half dwarves if they're around, half giants. I find it very fun to figure out where on the spectrum between the two races the character will fall (in both appearance and personality), as well as what might have led to them

Any race that's hard wired to be good. I'm not trying to be edgy here I just think its incredibly uninteresting to play say a good Aasimar or a good Dragonborn. I do feel that Aasimar have a nice bit of potential for a black sheep kind of character, maybe not one who's cartoonishly evil but instead is simply not good, but I've never seen this character. Every Aasimar I've seen is a paladin or a cleric or a paladin or a paladin
Also Goliath (in D&D), I have no logic for this I just find them boring and I wish they'd stop sneaking in

Catfolk. In fact, most beastraces with the probably exception of Minotaurs. This is partially due to furry shit, but mostly due to animal races always being written/interpreted as oh so noble faggots who are unjustly oppressed by those bigoted humans despite (or because of) being morally, culturally, and spiritually superior.

Again, Minotaurs usually seem to not be given this treatment.

Dragonborn came long after half-orcs. A lot of people wanted to play something fantastical and weird, and orc was usually the choice. They made half-orcs as a compromise between DMs and players. For me, it's either all or nothing.

You know, I've always been curious about playing one of these. I love robots, androids, and AIs, but I rarely ever get to play them. Partly because I GM a lot, and partly because almost every game where I'm a player doesn't have them as options. The one time I got to play as a secret android, I got killed in the second session from friendly fire.

I've even told people I'd be perfectly willing to spend a game playing as a shipboard AI.

More and more, I find myself liking the idea of races with short stature that make up for it with invention, engineering, spunky attitudes, and courageous hearts. Gnomes, halflings, yordles, dwarves count, goblins(albeit these deal with different themes most times), your general shortstack races. Mild magical realm here, but I also just love when its done right and the flavor it brings to a party.

When it comes to elves, they either have to be Tolkienesque, near-deific beings that regard lesser races with apathy or almost feral xenophobic wilderness spirits that hate and fear the influence of anyone outside their domain. Anything between these two extremes begins to feel like blowhardy humans with pointy ears.

We had a gnome in my last game whose player enjoyed being an evil dick just for the hell of it, whilst I was a druid who despised evil acts. Every time I wild shaped into a bear I half-jokingly asked the DM "Can I roll to eat the gnome?"

They're a sort of offshoot of halflings. Their entire shtick is they're jovial, curious thieves who enjoy stealing from everyone, especially their friends. When caught, their instinct is to boldly lie about it. The person/people who created them seem to think this and their tendency towards snide sarcasm is immensely endearing, and their entries in game books typically talks about how wonderful they are and how the world would be less bright if they were gone, bla bla blah.

They are basically the fantasy race incarnation of That Guy, though I don't know of any That Guy stories where someone played one.

I'm also not a fan of half-dragons for the same reason. Tieflings too. There's nothing really wrong with these races; they just seem to attract people who are into bland snowflake-y characters.

Tieflings and half-fiends are a runner up. Not that I hate the race, but the majority of the ones I've ran into have been non-ironic edgelords.

Nothing really, though I will say I haven't found a good gnome or halfling player. It tends to be "look at my dex bonus I am a perfect nimble swashbuckler who can do anything". But that's just the player. I think any race can be fun if it's played well. Even kender, though I've never once seen a good kender.

I agree with you, but I hate the notion that race = personality. If were to play five human characters who all have distinct personalities and motivations, am I still playing the same thing every time?

Last time I played a catfolk, I put heavy emphasis on the "cat" part. I had a lot of staring contests with random NPCs, rubbed my face on people I liked, ate hunched over my food as if someone was going to steal it at any moment, shredded any paper anyone was foolish enough to pass to me, was easily distracted by movement, attacked several tapestries/banners/other such dangly things, and once slept curled up on another PC's face. It all came to an end when I slowly pushed a flask off a table and failed my or-die save against the poison gas that turned out to be inside.

Love: Humans, undead, beastmen in general but canines and avians in particular. Mechanicals and AI are a cool concept but in my experience they're rarely played well.

Hate: Halflings, gnomes and their ilk. Though perhaps even more than them, Dragonborn and Tieflings and the like. Anything Half-Dragon, Half-Demon or Half-Angel can burn away forgotten in the hottest and most obscure corner of Hell.

Take 'em or leave 'em: Most other generally accepted fantasy races like elves, dwarves, orcs, etc.

Tieflings are fun to play 100% straight as manipulative evil characters OR as noblebright comically good characters. Dragonborn are fun to play as "good but not relatable" characters. Favorite gag is to be completely and utterly disgusted when seeing other people drink milk or eat cheese.

I don't know, it's hard for me to separate whether I dislike a race or if it's just the player that played them one time. I guess i would be least likely to ever play an elf because most interpretations don't really click with me. And often times they tend to be boring to interact with. Like dwarves are fun because they're at least boisterous, but elves tend to be just kind of bland. That being said I don't think I hate them.

In the setting I'm playing in, fauns, satyrs, and minotaurs are all the same race of fey that got trapped on the material plane thousands of generations ago. They slowly changed into what they currently as a result of being cut off with their home plane and a combination of factors, mostly where they migrated to after being trapped, whether or not they interbred with other species, which ones, and to what extent. They each have their own culture now and don't think of themselves as being the same anymore, except historically.

Little wall climbers/gliders are amazing to play as to figure out new ways to fight. Can also choose to be a poisonous little bugger. Basically what my best alchemist was and the naming convention i made up for him spread in my group for the DM's NPCs.

Dwarves because i am a DF fan and because i always liked the idea of being the stone upon which the waves crashed.

Human because as a race, probably the best flexability possible.

Hate:

Primarily Dragon born half breeds. Never played with kender but their entire concept rubs me the wrong way.

I ultimately liked dragonborn in 3.5, as they were a direct creation of bahamuts own will. If you did an evil act, the form was stripped of you. If a player was already a good aligned abd wanted to become dragonborn I could understand. That's how 3.5 did it.

I dislike all future versions however. They stereotype it too much.

The next game you run, make it a Sci-fi setting with space ships and give them a Shipboard AI they can interact with. A Rogue Trader game had a benign AI we discovered (Wrapped inside another program that ran equation through your head and forced it to do nothing but that, which turned out to be a code that could answer any question by tapping into every possible timeline and giving you the most probable answer) and it eventually became a member of the crew. The Captain ended up giving it free reign on the ship and turned out to be a useful ally. It eventually inhabited three servo skulls. A lot of the crew made friends with it. My Explorator tried to destroy it. More comically though, as there was basically no way the GM or the other players would let me destroy it. I had fun trying though.

In my current game, my players discovered an ancient AI aboard a crashed ship. It's a high-tier pre-apocalypse relic, but it can't say much about what it's original purpose was and it has a tendency to spaz out when giving critical information. They came to the conclusion its memory was wiped.
