Huh. Feels like you're about to recreate a certain cWoD type of deal by having monolithic antagonist organizations. Something that all splats but Demon lack.

What would the Chessmasters gain from this? Maybe they have some sort of bond with those under them and may achieve Apotheosis by being dealers of death? Could end up making them NPC conspiracies.

If we're talking about monolithic antagonist organizations then the Seers definitely count. They're everywhere and you can't beat them because they've already won. They're just maintaining the Exarch's order.

Also, by cWoD standards, the Seers are pretty streamlined.

You think so? Really? The impression I got from the seers book was that they're a nest of backstabbing vipers and the chronically depressed outnumbered by the pentacle by 2-1. Really, the Exarchs are all that make them a viable force.

The Seers book was pretty clear that they could be anything you want them to be, be it world spanning conspiracies or a bunch of crazed madmen believing in gods that don't even exist. The Seers book gave possibilities that they were bigger or smaller than the Pentacle and is conflicting within itself for storyteller freedom so I'm not sure how viable a source that is. Its like Secrets of the Sunken Temple talking about how Atlantis is or isn't a thing in order to give STs freedom.

In general though, outside of their own book, they are treated as magical boogeymen that deserve to be feared. They might not be as numerous as the Pentacle but they've made up for that in power. They hold high offices and manipulate things in the background in order to further the Exarch's goals. They've got ochemata inciting wars in ways that the Pentacle just can't stop by brute force. There are Seers in the every city that has a concilium and the fact that no one knows what they are up to or even where they are is what makes them scary.

I'm trying to start a game in nWoD core to stem into a further game whether its hunter, mage, etc or some mix. I want to use <pic related> as the first mystery/boss as a flesh weaving horror responsible for disappearances.

I need tips on how to portray a relatively small college town feel while introducing expert chars to become the mentors for the game I end up with. (at this point I think hunter will be the game)

The seers are boogeymen, true. That's because they would lose any straight-up fight with the pentacle. The Exarchs wouldn't dispatch an ochemata to help their worthless peons. By the time the pentacle had killed that many seers they'd have the resources for an even fight.

So what do the seers do? They get as high up as they can in society, get all the resources, artifacts, and servants they can muster, and wait for the right moment, all while watching their backs for their own fellows' treachery. The Exarchs servants play to their strengths, not their weaknesses.

Look up Savannah, Georgia. It's a fairly quaint little southern city with several colleges, a downtown area with the typical clubs, parking garages, business, etc., a very cozy residential side that looks straight out of Pleasantville, and it's full to bursting with crazy people and weird shit, from voodoo practitioners to sword collectors to antique dealers. Just go watch Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It takes place in Savannah and you can see how easily it would fit into WoD and can be adapted to fit most any game.

And they did against the Free Council alone. Diamond vs Seers was a pretty even matchup until those upstarts ruined everything. But the Seers aren't into straight up fighting. They don't need to because, again, they've already won. As big and powerful as the Pentacle is, they're still the rebels, fighting inside the Exarchs's prison with the Seer's rules.

Further the Lie and keep souls from Awakening, keep the Exarchs in power and try to destroy the Pentacles in ways they can't comprehend. They subjugate humanity and control them from the shadows. The Seers and the Exarchs care about humanity more than the Pentacle does in their own twisted way and try to shepherd the masses towards a single goal. The Pentacle, aside from the Silver Ladder, doesn't really give a fuck and as divided as they are they can't really stop the Seers from doing what they want. Sure, the Free Council murdered the fuck out of the Seers but did they even really do anything to stop them?

Mostly it goes for unusual and strange Rotes like my last case:
"Life 3, Mind 1" - when mage is close to a target and can see her ear, he can send a message by making her eardrums vibrate as caster wants. This rote can be used to deafen targets (Mind is not needed). Life 3 - manipulate part of a body, Mind 1 - interpret it so mage can send understandable information.
But, anyway I doubt such things would be there, but more simple and usable rotes will.

In a Changeling game, we were bumping into a lot of vampires. The ST threw one of the Brothers of Ypres at us. They're a Mekhet bloodline out of WWI who drink poisoned blood, and this one liked to attack his victims with mustard gas.

It was...unique being attacked by a vampire with a gasmask permanently sewed to his face, so he comes at you with a hypodermic needle. Even better when he got a taste of Changeling blood and decided he liked the semi-hallucinogenic effects.

We ended him, though, mostly thanks to our resident Fireheart Elemental.

As someone that taught the first half of the introductory course to string theory in the previous year, especially focussing on vertex operator algebra, since it was the mathematical physics course. I know that you're full of shit. (No offence meant. This is a callout not a beat down.) That stuff is still being taught and gets papers published on it. Why they're still doing it is another question all together (Badum-tish!). So many other fields are making a heck of a lot more headway currently, actually making measurable advances in real-time where work as a theorist is a combination of working as consultancy for projects and making slow progress in speculation.

So, I'm plotting for a future campaign I want to run that will run through a few individual game types (Vampire, Werewolf, Changeling, Promethean, Hunter) in chapters so to speak, with a few weeks devoted to each story focusing on one game and eventually culminating in a big finale that will crossover and allow players to play anything they want, with hopefully nobody playing the same character type.

To do this, I'm trying to connect all the dots between the various settings to link them reasonably and give them strong ties to the world as a whole (Arcadia from Mage and Changeling being the same thing, etc.) and the Beast stuff has just given me an interesting thought to help tie a lot together. I'm thinking that the Dark Mother will serve as a sort of antithesis to the God Machine, perhaps they're two separate entities that entered our plane of existence in antiquity or somesuch, but with God Machine creating human life to serve it and the Dark Mother corrupting humanity to create the various monsters/creatures to take servants away from GM. It creates an interesting moral dilemma of GM vs. DM, human vs. monster, slavery vs. living in fear, etc.

Anyway. I've got pretty solid explanations for how various bits tie in, but I'm a bit stuck on Promethean. I'm thinking perhaps the Divine Fire/Qashmalim are perhaps the creative force of the DM given form, a sort of extension of her will that corrupts flesh to "give birth" to her own race of (not) humans, and to tap into it someone has to turn their back on the GM and buck it's natural order. It would also explain Pandorans as being failures by those who still revere the GM and so the DM twists the creation to kill the one who tried to use her power without forsaking GM. Does that make enough sense to you guys?

There are about 90 oMage books, and most of them were filled details on what effects could be accomplished with each of the sphere ratings and combinations, as well as adding a wealth of knowledge on what else you could accomplish with magic and other resources.

In the nWoD, MtAw – which has the tightest magic system ever – has it further expanded and cleared up in the Tome of the Mysteries on how to judge the powers of the Arcana. nMage and nWoD is the best thing to have happened. Thank you Rich Thomas!

But seriously, if you wanted to change a core detail, like Changeling infertility, so that you can have a whole village carrying the Wyrd affliction, then you can do that. The books encourage Storytellers to do things like that, especially if you suspect that the players had already peeked at the books. Hunting a bloodsucking monster that comes out at night? Who says it has to be a vampire?! When the stakes don't work and it lowers a distended jaw like an anaconda, that moment of realising their false confidence is one of the most genuine moments of fear a player can have in a game! You have you pick of cults and conspiracies, monsters and mysteries. There are systems provided in the books on making your own!

This is what I keep telling people about why nWoD is awesome. Almost every single book says something along the lines of "Feel free to use these rules or not. It's a game about story telling and this is just ground work. Vampires might have been created in a certain way millenia ago, or they might have been created another way roughly 2000 years ago. You decide, or choose not to and let it be a fucking mystery! Go crazy!"

Everything in those books is more for inspiration than it is to bring down on a player. If they've read the corebook, so be it. When they bring up a rule in the book to me, all I have to say is "That's not how we're playing this game. You keep doing what you're doing and I'll tell you how it works.", because that keeps things fresh and interesting. That's the beauty of a tabletop, all-in-the-mind game. There are no limitations. In a video game you can only do what's programmed, in a board game you can only deviate so much. In a true table top game? You can do whatever the FUCK you want. Wanna play core Werewolf but use the various Changing Breeds species adapted to it? Go right ahead and be a Were-Elephant! Wanna play Promethean but don't like any of the lineages? You can play a fucking robot if you want! It's all up to your imagination and how much fun the storyteller is willing to let you have.

Do players usually read a bunch of the supplements? My group barely even reads the core rulebook past the cursory glimpse they gave it at character creation, let alone a mage supplement book and its pretty annoying how they just use me as a substitute for having read the things themselves. Its kind of hard for them to be mages when they don't even know what things like the astral are or what the rules regarding spirits are or whatever.

It sucks in a way but its also nice how I can use stuff from the books and they can't predict what will happen or how things work.

The main thing to take from this is to gradually introduce them to those concepts and build chronicles around introducing them. Make summoning and attempts at communicating and bargaining with a denizen of the Hisil as strange an experience as it ought to be. Make the players start off as newly Awakened, discovering this strange hidden world for themselves.

Hypothetically speaking, if I was a malign force that handed out power like it was crack at a bachelor party, I'd be courteous enough to provide chests full of tomes to go along with it. I'm taking about the good stuff: all nice heavy leather inlaid with metal. Vellum pages are sewn together and secured to a fine, supple leather spine backing. Guides, introductory texts, journals, encyclopaedias, compendiums, practical instructive texts, etc. Everything you could need to begin practicing, all heavily annotated, with footnotes and helpful hints crammed into the page margins. If you couldn't accidentally destroy everything with a half-a-mile radius by week sixteen, then I would've failed at my job.

Or to make it easier, I'd just hand out cursed artifacts. Why go to all the effort to finally learn to be able to shoot jets of fire when a rune carved gnarled bit or wood or a gnarly tattoo will do the job for you? Anyone can read a book, but nobody has time to spend all those months for part-time studies, it's unaffordable. Just make a deal with a demon or somthing, do a spot of arson, and it's done; congrats, you've got fire.

Or just perform a simple rite. Sacrifice a rat through smoke inhalation, then turn it into burnt offerings, consecrating a tree branch taken from a tree that was blacked in a forest fire with the rat's ashes in the process, and finally, carve the right runes along its length. Done.

By simple, I mean time consuming. Australia has plenty of forest fires though, so it's not like you couldn't place an advert over in their local listing online for some. The problem is the risk of getting swindled.

Fuck yeah. Got in on the Warrior Paragon level for Shattered Dreams. It's by farm more than I should spend on it. But Werewolf the Apocalypse was my introduction to the WoD back in 2001, and I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the changing breeds (Mokole and Camazotz in particular) for such a long time.

Now I get the chance to be in a Werewolf book, I'm so god damn excited.

I remember reading about Old Man Raven in one of the Promethean books and liked the idea of a Promethean made from an animal who gets treated even worse than others because he's not even vaguely human. I also like the idea of a Zekiran who was created from an atomic explosion as an antagonist who is trying to set off some sort of nuclear disaster that the group has to stop to save thousands of lives and perhaps earn some measure of humanity in the process. There's *so* much that you can do with Promethean that it's just a fun game to think about. Changeling is still my favorite, but it's difficult to get people to listen to you when you explain that the big scary monsters in this game are "Fairies/Fair Folk/The Fae" and they roll their eyes. Especially frustrating when you know they've all seen Pans Labyrinth and should know better.

I ran a mage game that started out in Vancouver because that was our home town. It quickly got boring because we knew everything about it and had a hard time visualizing it as being anything more than mundane so it ended up being a globe trotting adventure through Europe and Asia instead.

Whether the city is real or not doesn't matter since you're dealing with the fictional, supernatural aspects of a city more than you are the real aspects. In a way, every city you use is made up. At least, that is the way it is with Mage. Vampire is more grounded but even then, its not like the players know anything about night clubs, homeless shelters and getting laid anyway so its all fantasy.

I suppose I should be truthful and admit that I'm partly looking for city building advice for writing a story. But even in WoD I don't like using real cities because it feels... I don't know, hollow, when you haven't been there? I don't like the fact that I might get something 'wrong' in terms of geography. If you feel weird about this in writing a story, you can always put it into an introduction - it's pretty usual. Anyhow, there's several other possibilities - you could turn the anonymity of the city into a stylistic device too. For example, a string of noir one-shots one of my friends GMs is just set in "The City", which lends itself pretty well to noir inner monologue.

Yeah, I go with a location known as Ashcroft. It's something I've built up over the years that has a mix of things inspired by New York, DC, London, stuff like that. It's a small island, has a tiny city-within-a-city like the City of London, and has a slightly larger mainland sister city.

I just finished rereading Greywalker and it was not as good as I remember. The imagery was hectic, I could barely follow the action, and a lot of the events unfolded in a kind of boring, nonsensical manner. I couldn't even tell how many days had passed.

I'm going to try to read Poltergeist next, or maybe try rereading Urban Shaman.

I'm mostly looking for something about magical detectives. But also that isn't porn, because most Urban Fantasy seems like it could be more accurately described as paranormal romance.

I recommend the entire run of the Hellblazer comic series to you (it's recently been relaunched, I don't know how the new things' quality is). Comic character John Constantine is a really nice depiction of an urbal magician/demonologist. Imagine an independent stockbroker selling his soul to so many different demons that he gets "too big to fail".

There's a free indie rpg about vampires called Feed. The premise is superficially similar to VTM: the PCs are vampires struggling to maintain their humanity in the face of their addiction. You seem to think the issue is the book TELLING you that you can change things. The difference between nWoD and oWoD is that the book SUPPORTS you changing things. It doesn't make everything a tightly woven tangled mess where pulling one thread knots six others, it instead gives you a toolbox that you can use to create whatever you want. It even supports several different methods of play, as seen in Mirrors and the Chronicler's Guides and in Armoury Reloaded.

Also, I'm going to be real here, oWoD is a fucking mess. nWoD does a much better job at establishing a consistent tone, and whining that some of the best received stuff is somehow bad just makes you sound like a bitchy little fanboy.

Especially when from the Changeling corebook on through Rites of Spring to Equinox Road and beyond, Changeling has all those "problems" in spades.

The GM appropiated the Principle to make things, but being the clumsy machine that it is, the Divine Fire naturally remains untamed and attemps to follow its own bizarre agenda. If you opt for an optimist view on things, perhaps it could see the Promethean as its children, which is why it attempts to help them with the qashmallim. Or perhaps it begrudgingly tries to adapt them to the new GM scheme of things, which is why it tries to guide them towards becoming human.

Going by what you say, this would also imply that the Dark Mother used the original Principle to make her things. Maybe that is where the Pandorans come from; it's the scraps of Divine Fire that the DM managed to get a hold on.

When rolling, if the roll has at least 1 success, it succeeds. There's no number of successes to meet: difficulty is instead applied through penalties to the dice pool.

The only exceptions to this are extended actions, which need X successes in a certain timeframe, or contested checks, where whoever rolls more successes wins.

Game developers and authors are certainly no better or worse people than anyone else. However, if we as a group continue to want spoilers and answers to rules and setting questions, which we undoubtedly do, it's probably prudent not to be gratuitous assholes simply because 4chan is anonymous, to say nothing of simple courtesy to people who are normally friendly AND responding to OUR inquiries.

Simply, when discussing an RPG which we all ostensibly enjoy, the input of the people who produce it is usually helpful and interesting, and dissuading their participation because of juvenile anger and impulse control issues and misguided vengeance, is just plain stupid.

I find the obsession with "SJWs" to be hilarious. Why do people get so afraid of inclusiveness? The other day I watched a video from Eurogamer about LGBTI inclusiveness in games, and how sometimes things are made with different groups in mind [i.e. choices for the gays]. When I read or play an RPG, I want some lighthearted entertainment. I have enough politics in the real world, do not want a pandering treatise on purported social justice issues as part of my relaxation, no less text that is patently condescending, offensive, insulting, and demeaning to me, the reader.

I'm actually a very liberal individual and have absolutely no objection to the inclusion of the myriad of minority characters in RPG's. However, when the authors or developers assume that I'm a uncivilized and belligerent cretin, I begin to wonder if someone actually forgot the meaning of "inclusiveness" or upended the definition in a bout of arrogant self-righteousness. Either way, anyone who could write the sidebar in Mortal Remains or anything similar truly needs to engage in some deep self-reflection.

Lastly, if one of the primary points of including minority characters is to demonstrate how they are basically no different from anyone else in terms of character, motivation, ambition, feelings, etc., a point I agree with, constantly reminding the reader about the minority status of the character, to say nothing of the blunt sidebars, is actually counterproductive and just highlights how different these people seem.

I think Onyx Path is fine in regards to inclusiveness. (aside from Beast).

Blood & Smoke was pretty good in that regard in my opinion.
I especially liked the touchstone thing about having a fishing buddy you blow on occassion being your touchstone. It wasn't drawn out, wasn't a mechanical focus and was pretty evocative in two sentences.

The cunt and Cock thing was stupid though. As is the menstruating Vampire thing. Just leave it at magical blood.

There are some annoying thins here and there, like the trans characters with the judgey-pronoun thing and the diaspora discription in Mummy should have been included but should be a bit shorter than it was (like not 2 full pages about how bad it is to be stuck in a different body).

Does Lucifer count? If so read Lucifer, the comic book series by Mike Carey based off of Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Everyone knows Sandman as a pillar of urban fantasy/horror but Lucifer's great, imo even better. Although it doesn't stay urban fantasy for long and stretches out into the domains of other gods and demons, it can also give you ideas on things work in the Shadow or Underworld.

I started playing RPGs around 2007 so I started off with nWoD but the oWoD fanboyism was still pretty high. Everyone kept telling me how much they hated nMage lore and how superior oMage was and how much Technocracy cock they'd love in their ass.

I read wiki articles on Ascension and it sounded like it had some really great concepts and the idea behind the mechanics were way cooler than what we got in Awakening. I was also a fan of VtMB but never played Masquerade or Requiem but I always assumed Masquerade was just superior based off setting alone.

Then I read M20 and man, its a fucking mess. The spheres are suck, the traditions are restrictive, the concept of avatars turn me off and actually playing these cool concepts in mechanical terms are a bigger hassle than they're worth.

Ascension is also a horrible 'mother may I' bit of system with the magic system in general; there's less codified like Ascension's magic system, and so some things you think you could do with say, 2 Arete and 2 Time might not actually be doable. Plus Paradigm was stupid as shit.

I like Masquerade and Requiem equally, but Masquerade has more backstory/metaplot that is invasive into every nook and cranny of the setting (and the expectations of the average Masquerade player that you'll use it), whereas Requiem gives you more freedom but not anywhere near as much as codified and canonized. If you play them, go into them expecting two different modes of Vampire play: Masquerade is more 'epic mode of play with world-spanning consequences and a propensity for the PCs to not be super important' whereas Requiem is 'local focus with a focus on the actions of a smaller number of vampires on a smaller scale'. Also, don't go into Masquerade expecting any of the powers that you used in Bloodlines to be the same; they are not, not at all.

People have joked about Changeling: The Dreaming as a Chuuni game, and I know at least one person was trying to make a Chuuni fansplat.

That said while it's mostly a young teenager thing, "mom who just learned about feng shui" would probably fit as a familiar example of knowing a little and thinking you're a magical expert.

I heard some Feing Shui trivia. Like when designing a home office, don't set the desk where your back is facing the door, so as to not let your enemies be able to approach you from the back. It also supposedly gets rid of that uncomfortable feeling of being watched.

So some middle aged woman who picks up on a few titbits of this is going to start making baseless assertions from large leaps of logic, and suddenly think themselves a bona fide expert on the human condition, thinking they have 'solutions' to all of life's problems.
