It seems like Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay doesn't get discussed here much in favor of Age of Sigmar or the 40k RPGs, so let's have a WFRP thread.

Which edition is the best one? I've heard 3rd Edition is actually pretty good if you can get past the funky dice and all the cards and shit, but I've also heard good things about 2nd.

Depends on what you want. Do you want a more traditional tabletop RPG where the rules are the baseline and you work with those and improvise when needed, or do you want a more mechanical affair where everything has a substystem which determines much of the game, including whether or not you're arguing with your party?

If you want traditional, go 2e. If you want gamy, go 3e. If you want objectively less good nostalgia, go 1e.

Oh. Yes, 2e all the way. 3e basically requires you to be able to see all the tokens and trackers and stuff like that all the time. It's one of those games (whether this means it's good or bad is entirely up to the individual).

2e should be pretty easy to run over the internet.

Is Vermintide putting anyone else in a mood for this? Its pretty cool they used the city from some of the 3rd edition materials.

Plus the groups banter sounds a lot like a PC party already.

Anyways, what is 3rd edition like? How doesit compare to FFG's Star Wars RPG? I know Star Wars uses a refined version of 3rd edition's dice system, but I always hear good things about Star Wars while the 3rd edition stuff I hear is mixed at best.

3rd Edition uses pretty much the same dice, though they also have Reckless and Conservative dice to represent the fighting stance your character is in at any given moment.

The real problem 3rd Edition ran into is that everything, fucking EVERYTHING is on cards and shit. Your abilities, your feats, even critical wounds are all on cards and while some of that shit is also listed in the core rulebook, it's there mostly as an afterthought. If you want to play it without all those cards, because you want a more traditional RPG experience, don't want your table cluttered up with cards and shit, or because you're playing over the internet and can't use them, then you're basically fucked.

FFG really fixed that problem with the Star Wars RPGs, which kept the funky dice but cut all the extra stuff. I really hope if they do a 4th Edition of WFRP they follow Star Wars's example there.

Yep it'd be nice to see WHFRP redone under some kind of new system, 3E was a bitter disappointment as being a board game really.
Which is cool if you like board games and I like them too, but an RPG is a bit different.

The Only War and Black Crusade system could potentially be used to run it as well.
Either that or some modernisation of the 2E system, its not a bad one but really shows its age.

I'd be fine if they went either way, refined on 3rd and used some of the lessons they learned with Stars Wars, or if they just took Dark Heresy 2e and based it off that. Either approach has the potential to be good.

2e is better for RPing but it does have a lot of annoying bugs. Requires a competent DM to run, otherwise you run into problems.

It's been half a decade since I played it, but I remember some stuff like some classes being objectively weaker than others, ranged weapons not scaling with level (so that mid- or -high tier enemies are pretty much immune to them), some of the splatbooks being ridiculous (the vampire splatbook is pretty much: "vampires are immune to all damage, kill everything in one it, get a dozen attacks per round and are just so much better than your stupid pieces of shit PCs, fuck you for wanting to fight them").

Oh, I gotcha. Those are problems I thought were pretty obvious coming in, actually. Like, you can't have Soldier and Bone Picker on the same class list and expect them to be anywhere near equal. 3rd Edition is fundamentally no different than other RPGs, there is only a presentation difference.

Instead of adding modifiers to a d20 or d100 rolls, you modify a die pool of funky dice. Instead of looking up your abilities in a book, you have them in front of you in cards. This is the main difference: Once you know how the dice work (which is essentially a unified single mechanic through the game, so you pick it up fast) you only need about a single solid DM screen worth of rules to run. Your PC has a basic sheet and a hand full of cards that are his "special abilities", instead of them being in a rule book, they are on cards in front of you. So it makes it a much more visual and physical presentation than other RPGs.

People seemed to rather have all their abilities in a book instead of on cards, so that is what they did on Star Wars, along with a refined, and honestly improved, dice system.

As a big fan of WFRP, and one of the five fanatical 3rd edition lovers in the world, it is a really good system that plays great, you just have to be willing to give it a go. It does a great job of meshing and presenting the Old World of Warhammer Fantasy and has excellent adventures as well. Plus you can use the majority of 2nd edition books as well as 1st and 2nd edition adventures port over very easy.

The game is not perfect, they went a bit over board with the die system and you can see the refinement in Star Wars, it is still quite playable though. Also some bits could use a revision, like the Diseases are a bit too crazy, it is too easy to catch a disease and die horribly over the course of days or weeks. I'm ok with dying from diseases, don't get me wrong, it is just a little *too* easy to happen in 3e. Finally, the point of entry and portability is sadly reduced by it's design as well, you need like a 2'x2' box or so to carry around the whole game, and that is without most of the books!

It is a flawed jewel, but a jewel none the less.

To be fair, if you play WFRP by RAW and randomly roll for your career it would suck for everyone to get Soldier, Bounty Hunter, et. and then for you to get stuck with Bone Picker or Peasant.

That said I don't know how many people actually follow that rule. I don't.

If you go by raw and roll you can get characters woefully unprepared for adventuring and the game is unforgiving enough you probably won't live long enough to remedy the situation.

Unless you're ok with semi- or totally disposable PCs, it can be shit.

That's a completely optional rule (and even if it wasn't, just talk to your DM, goddamn). You roll your stats and then pick a class where you have basic prerequisites (the major limitations are race/class combos, really). Even if that wasn't the case, you literally start with all of the skills and trappings already - shitty classes have barely any xp requirements in order to advance to an exit career. Finally, if you didn't want to start out as a chump that has to prove his heroism, 1) why are you playing WHFRP at all?, and 2) just convince your DM to give everyone starting experience so you can get to where you want (but still have the background of what you were before). The character creation rules are as much for making PCs as NPCs - that's the reason the peasant classes are so plentiful. Furthermore, the game is only as combat-heavy as your group/GM makes it - it's a damn deadly system that doesn't mess around.

I get having preferences, and that's fine, but your complaints don't make any sense if you've actually read the book.

However, I stand by saying, those first few sessions can be kinda rough experience for some people if they get a shit roll, more so if others get good ones, which by RAW is entirely possible. As a new player to the game it can make for a bad experience.

Because it is such an unforgiving system just makes it a little rougher, as it is easy to not only feel weak but die before you're able to get out of that situation.

Now, if we're sitting around the table with vets and know what to expect? It isn't a serious problem, as we know what is coming.

It is just a potentially serious issue because it can turn potential new players away. Something I don't think anyone wants.

Neat, I was just about to create a thread about WFRP and ask a couple of questions.
1) Can you play as non-humans like Elves of Skaven etc?
2) Does it have rules for Ogres as PCs or NPCs?
3) I always hear how brutal the game is and how the PCs are just regular humans, but I wonder if you can advance your character into "heroic tier"? Think having 2+ wounds in WHFB lol.
4) I want to have a warhammer fantasy miniatures battle as a culmination point of the campaign. Maybe have each PC command a troops regiment and be represented as a miniature in that squad. Has anyone tried this? What's your take on that idea?

Halflings and dwarfs are playable, and make sense, in all editions of the game to my knowledge. Ogres are in 3rd, probably 2nd too, but I don't recall.

Yeah, you can get fairly powerful if you are able to live long enough, which isn't easy. You're always a few good hits away from being out though.

There is a book for a Skaven party. Also in core there are options for Dorfs, Elves and Halflings. I'm almost positive there are more books I'm unaware of.

You can have Ogres as NPCs since my group hired some as mercenaries a while back.

The game is buttfuckingly brutal. Diseases will ruin your day. Hell, my character got "killed" by a large rat. Not even a Skaven a fucking rat.

I've gotten 'almost' started a couple of times thinking of ways to improve or migrate the 2E system over to something more modern.... then realised just how much damn work it would be.
There's a certain amount of charm I guess with the careers that I just really like and wouldn't want to get rid of because that's sort of what makes WHFRP what it is.

Sure its unfair, sometimes its painfully shitty, unbalanced and in places, downright busted to hell- but in my opinion that's sort of what Warhammer Fantasy is and not just another generic D20 fantasy game. You are the shit-kicker peasant farmer or the privileged arsehole nobility, the camp-follower or scavenger living on the fringes, a thug knight, pickpocket or just some poor bastard that got roped into the lords army.

Chances are, you'll also get maimed horribly, die of some hideous disease or mutated and have everyone try and murder you.
Its a tough game. But I think that element brings out some of the best in players when I've run it and made me bring my A-game when I was playing as well.

Anyone else think that GW's defense of going for Age of Sigmar because WHF doesn't sell well, kind of weak, since GW had done an atrocious job of promoting WHF?

Maybe Total Warhammer will revive interest in the actually unique setting that is WHF.

WFRP 2e is designed for that. The (then) current edition of the tabletop game was entirely compatible. You chop the ones digit off of each ability score, and you have a minis statline.

Go for it, though make sure that the group actually gets through a couple careers before you do it, otherwise they'll literally be state troopers at best.

Halflings are crazy good in 2e; awesome at ranged (and with melee being the shitshow that it is that's doubly good), fellowship bonus, and they are never bothered by Chaos mutations.

Honestly, you could play an entire game as a halfling party and be the best WFRP characters ever.

Also WFRP is fucking RARE.
WF was not very pupular at all and you know Age of Shitmar killed the it. There aren't too many WFplayers, but WFRPlayers are almost exctinct by now it seems.

All of the non-human races are good if you play to their niches. A Dwarf Captain or Slayer, halfling master thief or Targeteer, and an elven ghost strider or champion are DEADLY.

My group hates the hell out of Elves but I think Ogres are more broken right out of the gate for combat. The homebrew thing we used for them in 2e is crazy strong. 40 + 2d10 Strength and Toughness and the only downsides are fellowship and intelligence. When we fought a massive spider in a beastmen filled cave, the player of the Ogre in our group said "I roll to pick up the boss spider" and all the GM could do because of him being an Ogre is impose a -30 penalty.

He picked up the Spider and left it vulnerable for my Knight-Errant to deliver two 10's and a 9 worth of damage right to its belly. Ogres be strong.

2nd (which is basically a patched 1e) is a solid d100 system for playing shit farmers. Heavy on the math, especially for combat, but enjoyable for a grinding, harsh game.

3rd was an attempt to make it a lot more rules-light, and it did the Fantasy Flight thing of including a lot of tokens and specialized pieces (which has the added effect of fucking you if you want more than 3 players, because you have to buy more shit) which still makes it complex, just in a different way. Nowhere near as deadly.

Even though they updated 3 with a tokenless system, you should still play 2e if you want real WFRP.

Resistance to Chaos is incredibly good, their ballistic skill more than makes up for a lackluster weapon skill (if you are ever fighting someone close up in a fair fight, you're doing it wrong) and you don't need tons of strength. The only thing really holding them back is toughness.

Dwarves and Elves have their niches, but halflings are preferable to humans in just about every situation (even racism-wise, they don't have it that bad).

The actual ogre supplement for WFRP 2e gives them 30+2d10 Strength and Toughness, and -10 BS, Int and Fel, as well as 5x the price for all your gear. A dwarf is more durable than an ogre.

I've seen some bad luck in a minor combat give some ugly critical wounds to a group, they had to choose between risking their lives in the next confrontation or essentially abandon the current plot in order to heal up. No one died but it was ugly.

I also saw someone catch a small disease from some misadventure and it festering into bigger and uglier forms until it killed him.

I haven't had a problem with 3e lethality.

There's also a lot more stuff for first and second edition, in the form of good splat books. Some of the adventures for 1e and some of the setting and expansion books for 2e are absolutely fantastic. You'll get a lot more of the good WFRP tone, and the rules are much easier to convert back and forth.

Most of the 2e fluff works fine for 3e, I bought and read a bunch of 2e stuff for my 3e playing days.

Also lots of 1e and 2e adventures work fine for 3e, the conversion is pretty trivial. I ran and played several.

I don't understand how people can say there was a tone shift in 3e, other than PCs starting off slightly less shit. The fluff is the same, just clarified and reset several years back.

Not wanting to mess with all the cards and crap that came with 3E, I ran 2E for some time and had a very good time with it. But after awhile, certain dated and/or lackluster aspects of the system got on my nerves and I eventually abandoned it in favor of Iron Kingdoms.

That said, I love the setting and I miss it sometimes. If 3E had just been a good cleanup and update of 2E, I'd have probably never given Iron Kingdoms a second look.

Reading the rulebook, it makes it seem like it is a requirement. While everything is eventually up for homebrew, it doesn't even mention allowing the players to choose their class.

But Grail Knights are there. As are exalted champions of chaos. Yeah you have to work to get there but they're there. Leaving high magic out is a wise idea but with how everything goes from 1 to 100 stat-wise, period, swordmasters would fit in perfectly on the high end of that spectrum. Ironically, they'd probably look like a retooled daemon slayer advancement-wise.

For what it's worth though, I think the game DOES work better earlygame. When you get to the point where you're on your feet, the only thing keeping tension around is the low possibility of Grendel levels of Ulric's Fury from an enemy or greater daemons.

Well, systematically, that's because Beastmen don't have much of anything else going for them. Ogres, it seems, can at least be somewhat tolerated within the Empire if they mind themselves. If you're a Beastman, you're going to be killed on sight on matter where you go because you're chaos. That goes for a lot of things in the Tome of Corruption, really. Ogres also get some pretty rad starter talents while being way more likely to live long enough for them to get their strength into the range of insanity. For their wounds, you roll 1d10 and add 18. A standard Gor in the tome of corruption gets like...14 max I think?

Even that aside, every career has useful skills, and most of the non-combat ones are easy to get out of. It's all a matter of running the game properly, really. You got two soldiers, an elf and a ratcatcher? Good, here's some shit happening in a large city no one has visited previously. Except for the ratcatcher who's been doing this shit for ten years now and knows every single nook, cranny and passage in six districts. Not to mention can get into a lot of places without arousing suspicion and without needing to bluff or disguise himself.

The rule is a part of a completely different approach to rpgs, back when they were still breaking the shell of their wargaming egg.

In a manner of peaking, you're not TELLING a story, you're FINDING OUT what the story IS. Random stats and character classes are a part of that: you don't create a hero, you find a guy who can do the part. The player-character division is much stronger as a result. This can have various effects, including initial detachment, but can be very gratifying in the long run (Hans started as a shit peddler, and NOW look at him go, praise Ulric!). It's also less grating to lose a character, since the player doesn't spend hours poring over arcane tomes to find just the right build to reflect his concept. He picks up some dice, and ten minutes later he's good to go with a fully made character.

It also affects how the characters develop: you don't write a backstory, instead you find out what it is by interacting with the world. You, as a player, are getting to know your character as a separate entity, rather than 'being your character'.

Granted, it's not for everyone, but just think about how hard it is to play a Mary Sue self-insert when the dice land on below average stats and 'ratcatcher'.

And the thing about the Swordmasters is that (as far as I know) it just means a few centuries of work. I've never seen someone honestly make it to Champion of Chaos without succumbing to rivals, mutations, or dick Gods, and the Grail Knight is a quest that the DM entirely controls, and can pass or fail you whenever.

Swordmasters get stats equivalent to that, but they don't have the dangerous magical route to acquire that position, it just takes a huge timescale (in the eyes of everyone but elves) and dedication to their craft.

I would say because you can fuck yourself over very easily early on, which on your first run of the game can be pretty discouraging. You also might not know the best combos, such as Halfling sling spam, which makes your performance even worse.

Also, if you want to play as an utter shitter or "random NPC" (I don't have anything wrong with it!), why can't you just choose it yourself? The thing the person mentioned about "discovering your character!" is rather silly, especially when the person WANTS to make the details of their shitty rat catcher, and turn him into the savior of Altdorf. Besides, making a marry sue in this game is like swimming up river in a lava stream anyways.

We're on our way to Cathay. Dude is some fuck-up knight that's been denied an official title for years because he can't impress his daddy enough. His dad died and his holdfast, a little hole in the swamp in Couronne, went to his older brother. Some weird shit happened. He got a vision of the lady at some lake and got a crappy, rusted two-handed estoc that we're all convinced is going to become Excalibur. Part of the reason he's doing the quest is to avoid going back home.

So far, his only sign from the lady is a dream telling him to head to the mountains. The obvious idea is to circumvent going to the mountains but if we try that, he'll have the NPC who is our boss say "No I don't CARE that we could go AROUND it we're going THIS WAY because the plot demands it!"

I don't think it's broken, but a few things I would change are the complete usefulness of Swift Attack and Dodge/Parry. When you get 2 or more attacks, there's almost no point to use any of the other combat actions. Dodge/Parry can get pretty obnoxious when WS and AG gets really high.

I'm not fond of it, but I wouldn't classify it as "totally broken". It works, it isn't great.

It is a weaker version of the modern FFG 40k games.

While it is maybe my favorite setting, I'd happily see it in a new mechanical form. I'm really savvy on a GURPS version. Maybe I need to get the motivation to do my own.

Defensive stance is great though if you're fighting something big and want to play conservatively. Also, Pike stance if you have Pikes. Aiming is also good if you REALLY need that one attack to hit. As for dodging and parrying, well, I don't see a problem with a character getting awesome after surviving for a while. WHFRP is kind of a horror fantasy game and the characters that survive are the Ripleys and whatnot. They only get a single dodge/parry per turn anyway so if they don't have fortune points to spare and other things roll well, they're still fucked.

The other combat actions are useful, and in a few situations can be even more useful than Swift Attack, but for most of the time it's better to just straight out murder the fuck out of anything you're facing. If you could rate the usefulness of actions, Swift Attack would be so much higher than the rest despite them not being bad.

I've once rolled 6 Ulric's in a row on one of my more unfortunate players. Poor guy went through three characters in a single campaign, I felt really bad about it. That time, however, it only took one of his toes I think. He was shot by a jezzail and I rolled really badly for the crit value. He didn't have any Fate Points left so I felt kinda glad that he didn't lose anything terribly important.

I used the expanded crit charts from windsofchaos.com, I highly recommend them.
As for the campaign, the Party was part of a mercenary company called the Golden Hawks. It was lead by a Tilean named Commander Vitale and his company was hired by the Elector Count of Stirland to scout out Sylvania. This was just before the Storm of Chaos so the count wanted to make sure the dead stayed dead. In exchange, he gave Vitale permission to loot whatever he wanted. The Party was used to go ahead of the company, scout out locations, gather intel and the like, but were eventually separated. Manfred Von Carstein was on the move and a splinter force from his army had cornered the PC's in an abandoned fortified inn. They were happy to see Vitale's eagle banner cresting a nearby hill, only to see him quit the field when he saw just how many of the undead he would have to fight. He wouldn't go into battle just to save five schmucks.
They later on got mixed in with Skaven and stole a battery of magic energy which was supposed to be used for Project Supremacy, resulting in a combined effort of Clans Eshin and Skryre to get it back but failed time and again. They didn't even know what this battery was, but they sure as hell weren't going to give it up. When that character lost his toe, they were being pinned down by Jezzail fire. Basically this is how I described it;

More fuckery ensued and they got involved with a child who had incredible magic potential, far beyond that of any human, a jealous noble girl who constantly sent assassins after her sister to keep the inheritance, and a plot to resurrect Nagash.

The angle of being mercenaries sent out ahead of a main force vaguely reminds me of what I'm doing in the campaign with my ocplzdonutsteel purity sue. We've been sent out to scout the grey mountains ahead of our company and a dwarf army who aim to retake a lost keep in those mountains.

The battery was supposed to power the machinery under Middenheim, which was essentially a nuclear bomb. It was called Project Supremacy, and instead of blowing up the Fauchslag Rock it just released a lot of poison gas and killed everyone in the tunnels. So because they were greedy assholes, they manage to save a lot of people from being consumed by a magical explosion.

I have considered using End Times material, some of the not garbage parts that is. The campaign eventually culminated in stopping Nagash's resurrection, his spectre being consumed by that magical prodigy kid.

Antoine Von Carstein, misguided 'cousin' of Mannfred. He was in league with the spectre of Nagash to bring about his return, believing that it would usher in a Golden Age for the vampires and the undead. Mannfred himself appeared in a temple of Sigmar, masking his magical presence and hiding in the rafters, to aid the Party in taking down Antoine.

There was also a Blood Dragon that was the missing grandfather of the party's Knight Errant. He occasionally came by to test the young knight, not killing him but seeing how he's progressed. He also imparted one last piece of wisdom upon his defeat at his grandson's blade, that you can search for the Grail for your entire life and not see it. But that is the Quest, and all you can do is square your shoulders and keep looking. He despaired when he didn't achieve it and wanted his grandson to avoid the same mistake he made.

It made me quite proud that he later on was denied any gifts from the Lady, but still soldiered on. It was his final test and he passed.

I think it helps that they went from gold greedy mercenaries to the next best thing kind of heroes. They lost a few comrades on the way, and the same men, women and children who were dying of plague were crying and cheering their names later on. It wasn't an easy route, they were forced to confront their old comrade, the priest of Sigmar, now a Champion of Slaanesh, but it was a satisfying one.

Evil is too easy, even in a world of grey that is Warhammer.

The thing about this system is that when you die, you die hard. If you want to make it more epic feeling, just have characters get knocked out when they go to 0 wounds instead of dying or something. Moreover, give them magic items. Magic items help mitigate the vulnerability of characters. Hand out experience at a faster rate so they build in power.

Also, let them pick their class. Consider letting them either reroll their stats a lot or letting them do 75, 100, or 125 point buy.

It depends really on the encounters you've built and your players. I've had groups tear through quite challenging encounters because they've been smart in how they handled things.

Admittedly, as in most RPGs, being lucky/having well-trained dice certainly help.

Did you ever actually read anything at all related to warhammer?
It's made of that stuff. There are several pages with timelines in each army book detailing battles and heroic deeds that had an impact on the Old World.
Every faction has about a dozen of staple hero characters.

The only way to not see how warhammer lends itself to hero characters is not knowing anything about warhammer at all tbh.

I seriously confused as to what the circumstances under which you came to that conclusion might have been.

I think he meant heroic in the sense that they're bright, colourful and good. Heroes in Warhammer are still heroic, they just tend to have a bit of grime to them. Grail Knights are the chivalric ideal, but they can still be dicks. High Elves have saved the world more than anyone else but can come off as imperialistic, especially those from Caledor.

He follows some of Shallya's tenants, and tries his best to serve her will when he can. But doesn't believe in total nonviolence, as he's firm in his belief in the innocent need defending.

Worship of the Lady isn't illegal for peasants, they just tend to have other patrons that fit with their lot in life. Taal and Rhya for those on farms or hunters, Mannan for fishermen, etc. It's the nobles who worship the Lady above all others.

don't forget about fate points. these effectively give players "lives." handing these out as quest rewards makes the game deadly but much less likely to be end because of player death. instead, player death is "expected" and thus humorous. which is actually the original intention. warhammer fantasy roleplay, after all, is self-aware and tongue-in-cheek; something i feel was lost in the transition away from the 80s vision. everything is too "grim dark" without humor these days.

Knights of the Grail, the Bretonnia sourcebook for WHFRP 2e, is what I meant, sorry. I just checked and was, in fact, wrong. The Lady can be and is worshipped by some peasants, though the book notes that the religion "is almost entirely restricted to the nobility". The almost part is referencing Grail Pilgrims and similar.

The only glimmer of hope I think for 3e WFRP, speaking as one of the few lovers of it, is that a polished version of it's legacy survives in FFG's Star Wars games.

Considering 3e did poorly and this Age of Sigmar crap GW is pushing, I have no real hope for seeing a new WFRP.

I'm happy to play 3e or maybe a quickie GURPS version would be good for me.

I gave 3E a go at a demo game and it didn't quite grab me like the 2E did.
Sort of a middle ground as others have suggested- the FFG SW system would probably be ok for a basis as well. OW and the BC systems would also work if you preferred the percentile types of systems as well.

The first game I ran was a little bit of a disaster and soured my group to certain parts of the system.

We were playing in a bar and the group really struggled to have enough space for their cards, sheets and tokens and be able to roll their dice without losing them.

Things went a little smoother in future, but ditching the cards was the only real thing that FFG could do.

People still die horribly from terrible events and start off struggling and get better over time. Sure if you focus on a single area you can start competent in, but I imagine you could do that if you tried in 2e too.

Yes, upgrading dice is a smart feature.

I used to love WFRP (still do but I've not played it in years).

My last campaign was set in Nuln, the overarching plot was that Skaven were doing some dodgy stuff below the city pretty much. There was also a Necarch Vampire Scholar and a Giant sleeping outside the city walls. The players started as Carnival guards, temporarily hired as a contrivance to get the party together.

They were alerted that a Bailiff was attending the Carnival with his daughter, the players were standing guard outside the Man-eating Chicken tent to make sure nobody spoiled the 'surprise'. After an hour of shaking down people for loose change, the players were told hush-hush that the Bailiffs daughter was missing, they had to go find her. One of the players (a speshul snowflake with one purple eye and his dad was a vampire) lead the charge, thinking it was his chance to be a big goddamn hero. They went off into the woods around Nuln, the roadwarden spotting tracks in the undergrowth, and they eventually found the little girl hiding in a thicket of roots. The Roadwarden and Halfling Strongman knew this was a trap, the big hero strode forward and ripped his hood off "Worry not child, we're here to help you!" She was scared of his (explicitly stated) glowing purple eye. He complained and the Beastment struck.

About six rounds passed, the Halfling was disembowelled, the Thief managed to kill one and the Roadwarden was hiding up a tree reloading his pistols. They picked the girl and halfling up and went back to the Carnival, returned the daughter and went to find a physician. The only person they could find on short-notice was someone who was dealing with the Skaven, giving them slaves in return for tiny fragments of warpstone that he used to write books with. The Sawbones managed to staple the Halfling's guts shut with some metal bands and a little bit of warpstone that just burnt him. They left and got shouted at to get back to work.

If you were going to do this, I'd keep OW's Psychic Powers instead of DH2e's. I'm not sold really on the changes between those two lines.

I like how useful all the different kinds of wizards are if they don't fuck up with Tzeentch's Curse. I've been wanting to play a Celestial Wizard for the better part of a year now. They get free rerolls as long as they can cast second portent of amul, can renew the fortune points of their fellows, can knock all enemies down with a hurricane, get a 5 damage magic missile AND a 5 damage AOE in the form of a thunder storm. Their strongest spell may be next to impossible to cast but boy will it ensure the doom of most npcs if they pull it off.

College Wizards in WFRP are really interesting. They each have a specialized school of magic that limits them greatly, while almost all the Orders have room for some kind of attack and utility stuff, some are clearly better at some things than others.

Also magic is dangerous, you can't just spam spells to fix every problem that you come across, as eventually your luck will run out and you're arm will turn into a tentacle and try and strangle you or you explode a buddy or something.

It creates a very different feel compared to D&D where everyone has spells and sprays them all over the landscape with little care or thought.

One thing I like, from a narrative viewpoint, is that experienced wizards are the only people who know what's going on at any given point. They have an extensive enough knowledge of the winds of magic that when they see something with their witch sight, they probably have a good idea of what's going on. What is "a mysterious feeling" or mysterious sight to someone else is a very strange manifestation of Azyr to you.

Depends on what people want to do. If you want to allow characters from outside the empire or if someone likes Arthurian knights, show them Knights of the Grail for the latter (and the former) and Realm of the Snow Queen. If you want total creative freedom while being in the old world, use Renegade Crowns. The Old World Armory/Bestiary are excellent accessories. The Career Compendium has every career ever put into the game sans a few chaos and skaven career plus several nifty new ones. Through the Drakwald is an excellent introduction and leads into a trilogy of adventures that has been described as very good.

Naw. In the bastardized version of the system my GMs use, we just get knocked out at 0 wounds. I think you start rolling for critical hits after you fall below 0. Until a crit kills you, you're still alive and able to act but barely hanging on.

It has to be among the best written rpg books and certainly more fun to read and more informative and it-character then Warhammer lore in army books. I totally love it, too bad I'll never own the real book since they are fucking expensive. Also the career system is very interesting and seems very organic and conducive for roleplaying

What's real bad is that it's really too goddamn hard to find a GM and a party to play it properly even online. Not to mention actual tabletop irl, it's out of the question.

Also I love how the book is very concise and to the point. Having just slugged through Call of Cthulhu 7th Ed , this is a much welcome change of pace. I might run this! Although I didn't find rule for mass battles and converting character profiles into WHFB (it's mostly obvious outside of wounds and initiative)

Probably because there shouldn't be any major battles inside, and for mass battles there's always WF itself.
As for converting, I don't think there's anything particular needed for converting. The system is pretty straightforward. Go and make 3 - 30 or 35, 4 - 40 or 45 and so on. Any skills are to be added according by relevance.

Use magic as you wish, just know that the odds of it fucking you increase with every roll.

I don't recall how Runes worked in 2e, 3e it was ok from what little I recall.

It does seem a bit more like High Magic in that it seems better for NPCs and setting/story use than PCs.

Again though, it is another way showing how WFRP is *NOT* D&D and shouldn't be.

I'm one of those DMs who doesn't need or want rules for things that the NPCs do, but if they give me rules for player characters I want those ruins to be functional and fun to play.

It could be fun to have a game set up where the party is helping a Journeyman hunting for old Runes, but the way the rules are written they'd almost never be able to use runes, even if they wanted to (unlike wizards, who can choose when to cast a spell but might choose not to). It's a shame when the character is unable to do what the core of the character is about because it would cause too many problems balance-wise.

Unfortunately players always ask/beg/demand for more shit with little concern for balance or how it impacts the overall game, they just want their favorite little thing in game. Secondly, companies need to fill those books with something!
