Mindflayers, or How I learned to atop worrying and love the Illithids

Got a cyberpunk future game where the BBEGs pulling the strings are actually the squid faced men of The Old ones employ.

Other than brain enslaving mind slugs (not!Stargate Gou'auld) what are unique ways to use psionic powers?

I've been thinking of using king fu psychic surgery, making them scary "rip out your heart" ninjas, but not versus high tech materials. So they can fuck up an unarmoured guys day, but not, say, an armored mecha.

Thoughts?

I think their mental powers should be more insidious.

Effecting how the players perceive and react to the world around them. The presence of things corrodes people's sense of reality. For example, you could roll perception/will checks behind your DM screen while they're walking through the BBEGs hide out or a haunt of theirs, and if they fail they start going in circles. If they fail different amounts or one fails and the other doesn't tell them that they start seeing the place slightly differently.

It should spook them and make them start arguing about who's seeing the place for how it really is, all the while the illithids are creeping up on them. A critical fail or what have you might make one player see another as a illithid briefly.

More generally being in close proximity during combat the illithids could launch actual psychic attacks, make them roll to see if they resists, otherwise they get penalties to hit their opponents/temporarily lose capacity to move.

I always found illithids better as enemies that aren't necessarily fantastic at fighting, but really really good at keeping you from being able to fight back.

Well, it definitely fits in with the theme so far; the players have met a Mind slug only, and it nearly killed them all when it took remote control of the party pilot and nearly crashed their scramjet. I've already got into the habit of rolling their saves behind the screen, and only letting them know something is up if they pass their checks _very well_ .It really made them quite paranoid last time.

I'm still super inclined to make them as alien and inhuman as possible. I don't want them to have any sort of advanced technology, but they will definitely have defenses. Probably stuff that looks biotech or crystalline, maybe Geiger-esque. The big reason is these are guys woken up by World War three, after going to sleep for millennia, dropping off back when man was a food source in the jungles of semi-pangea. Now its the future, man is technologically advanced, and the flayers may be supergenius Pisons but they don't have guns or lazers or jets or tanks.
