In defense of him, he was the first model I painted and they all came already assembled.

He had a terrible paint job I tried to fix. They also all now have basic mud bases and graveyard earth around the edge of the base. Basic but better.

FW should sell checkerboard shoulder decals. They already sell 30k decals where you just slap it on a banner and it fits perfectly and looks like a super intricate design complete with shading and blending was painted on the banner.

I like the topknot CSM heads because it gives them a sort of barbaric, primal look and is also kinda goofy in an 80s glam kinda way, the horned helmets are retarded though

Use more thinner so you can apply more coats for the darker colors, this will give you a more solid looking NMM.

Use quick strokes straight down. Because you are using thinner layers, you don't have to worry about screw ups since you will be gradually building up the layers and one or two messed up strokes won't be visible once you're done. The quick strokes will make a less wobbly looking NMM.

Nope not bait, just a terrible painter. This was my first time painting miniatures and the lot I started with was second hand so it was already painted very poorly. I didnt help by assembling then basecoating the models I added.

They look a bit better now but I do not have any more recent pictures.

From a technical standpoint it's good, but looks a bit too clean for Nurgle to me. That's just an opinion though, seems like there's a trend in wargames to paint your guys as if they just came fresh out of the shower/maintenance bay and straight onto the battlefield you're playing on, I would imagine Nurgle daemons to be covered in snot and shit. Maybe try to add some puss to his sores, GW's Nurgle's Rot technical paint is pretty cool for this.

It's a little pricey, but they recreate your decal by hand instead of just zooming/shrinking, use high quality materials, have no minimum order requirement, and have a very easy process.

If you look at his belly you can see the green, shiny stuff in the crevasses.
I like to give them a green/yellow hue but yeah I keep them relatively clean for nurgle. My GUO is gonna be all out disgusting though... So many possibilities

Also, just got some major incentive to crank these guys out this week. Some madman was selling 20 assault marines for $40 with sensible loadouts and a not too rough paintjob on eBay and I broke down. Between them, the death company box, and the vanguard veteran boxes in the mail, I'm gonna have a lot of fucking death from above to paint.

Now if I could just find some cheap dreadnaughts with all their arm bits and maybe a blenderbot to play with the death company I'd be set.

I cut the topknots off my orks because I think they look dumb, make them too tall and harder to store, and will probably break off on their own someday anyway, and like the simplicity of a regular, 'ard hunk of metul on yer hed

Have you never modeled a Mk II/III backpack before? Do you not have a pair of flat sprue cutters or something? Just remove it from the gate stems close to the backpack, then carefully trim away excess along the shape of the pack, being careful not to accidentally remove chunks from the backpack itself. If you have an actual model sprue cutter it's even easier than doing plastic backpacks.

I primed black, did thin coats of warboss green until it was vibrant, washed sepia, highlighted warboss green + bone, then washed sepia again
that's probably way too many steps and I reached this stage by totally groping in the dark, but I got pretty good results at least.
actually, you know, I should have asked for a better route to the same place last thread but the thought never occurred to me.

Looking at a chart, I can't see more than Bloody Red (010) and Vermillion (909) from the Game Color and Model Color Vallejo lines.

The terrain base is 4mm cork sheet PVA glued onto 1.7mm tamiya plasticard. After the glue is dry (took 3 days to dry lol), I make cracked/broken concrete effect by picking bits out of the cork with a pair of tweezers. I use the little chunks of cork I pull off as rubble using PVA and sand to fill in the gaps. Here's an earlier build log pic

Yeah he's the test model. Just a throwaway dark vengeance model a friend gave me.

I'm also just doing the rough block painting stuff right now. Since yellow shows errors so easily I'm just waiting to the end to fix mistakes. They're already starting to come together though.

How would you guys base these by the way? I'm thinking a nice desert/badlands look would work, and help match my guard that these guys will be backing up.

I wanted a model for an order malleus inquisitor with terminator armour, Nemesis Daemon hammer and psycannon to lead a mixed force of grey knights.

What do you think of this?
I was going to use a normal human head to show he's a normal human underneath the armour but then I tried this and I think it looks pretty good too, I would have to cut off the side bits of the head... chamber of the armour other wise he wouldn't be able to look right and left.
Do you think that would be practical?
Should I just go for the normal human head?

Been kitbashing an Orlock ganger for Necromunda, currently held together with blutack. He's supposed to dual-wield pistols, but I can't figure out if I want to cut up the Empire matchlock pistol and keep the sloped grip or if I want to completely replace the hand with that of a regular Guard plasma pistol hand, pictured. Eeesh... I think the horns make him look too Chaos-corrupted, unless he's a extremist (which I doubt if he's leading Grey Knights).

I'd recommend cutting away the horns and filing the helmet into a greek-esque hoplite helmet.

I'm amazed you managed to get all the wash on the armor plates and none in the cracks on that right suit.

I like the camo scheme but you might want to just apply the wash in the crevices, or if you're going to cover the whole model, go for a smoother tint which is hard without an airbrush or spraygun. I would personally go over the flat armor panels with the original color after the wash to clean it up.

If you want it to be more camo-like you can paint camo patterns with a different brown or yellow.

I definitely will. Took me months of agonizing over whether or not I wanted to make them clan Magaera (white trim) or Atropos (black) but I decided on the one with Badab fluff.

No, don't do that. Crackle paint is going to either look like regular solid paint or it will crackle on your tracks and look unrealistic. If you want a textured effect, you need to use something like Blackfire Earth. If you just want kicked up dust, you can simply use the color of the dust and overspray or heavily drybrush it on until the bottom parts are nearly solid.

Do another round of a dark wash in all of the recesses and then apply a lighter paint on all of the corner ridges. He got his result with what was as least a four step process, you're at stage two.

Don't listen to the other assholes in the thread. Also, it's best not to wash large flat surfaces if you want a clean paintjob, washings mostly good for organic effects (skin/leather).

OK lads, I have been totally diluting my paints to a glaze and have been brushing them towards edges (black) to create a gradient and it was going pretty well and it looked okay until I hopped from Eshin Grey straight to Dawnstone. It's fucked my shit up and so I know now in the future to actually layer from Eshin Grey and then to mix the paint to eventually make it as light as Dawnstone while applying the dark to light mixes on top of the original Eshin Grey highlight with smaller and smaller brushstrokes, closer to the edge.

Looking for feedback on my turfing method.

Basically this is flock, painted green, then washed and drybrushed like you would a vehicle (though not the same paint scheme as the model itself). I'm trying to get close to the color/texture of a green playmat (not necessarily grass).

I am also curious as to why you want to achieve that, but congratulate you on reaching your goal. It looks fine. You might get a similar look by just priming white and washing green (I do this with red sometimes), but I wouldn't change what works.

dude why, finish your basecoats first next time. Use a nice cassandora yellow or carrobough crimson for subtle shading, then highlight, THEN do details followed by freehand. It's pretty much impossible at this point to not touch or spatter

Army painter makes good stuff, I heartily recommend it. Usually I just use rustoleum to prime, but this is just so perfect for lamenters Im gonna stick with it.

$5 says they discontinue it within a month

Also, big thanks for all the advice people have given since I started working on these guys, it really helps and these guys wouldn't have looked half as good without it. There's a reason I come here for painting advice, and you guys are it. Dakka and other forums are just hugboxes and you never really get honest criticism, so its nice to get real critique here.

Find some bright green and dark blue paints... water them down, then wash the gold/bronze with them, starting with the green and working up to very thin washes of a dark-ish blue... Brass/bronze doesn't rust, but it does decay rather nicely.

You know, I aint even mad, I just don't think they specifically fit the SoB. Bolter bitches are supposed to be an ascetic order of no fun allowed murderous lesbians and "having my tits out metal magazine style" doesn't mesh well with that, I think it would work better if their models were sculpted in tight, restrictive latex-esque gear

But there is still something off about the model..
Mainly the black armour with gold details isn't really working. It doesn't "pop" out more than it looks like a weird mess.
Also the hands look weird, like he put his hands in a freezer before grasping his sword and going to battle.
What's with the tabard btw? did you freehand that or just slapped a icon on it and called it a day? You can make that look better, you don't need a cross for that.

Fluffwise the DA are dishonoured not-paladin knights, while the IF are Space Gorillas, who like to smash stuff and have lots and lots of Ape-related names and puns

I'm really not keen on the pillow shading (but I assume that's because you're using airbrush and hopefully you'll fix that later) but I love the texturing and the idea of the plasticard on top of cork. Great work!

Where the fuck do you play 40k besides a GW?

How do you all have these magic FLGS with lower prices and nice staff?

I live half an hour from the third biggest city in the god damn US and the only store I have found that supports 40k besides a Games Workshop is more than two hours north of me through the city.

Meetup and Facebook haven't found me shit.

At this point I am going to have to try and be-friend a Neckbeard at the GW and find out who has a table in their parent's basement...

This. There's a club that used to belong to the uni, but broke off some 15 years ago. They have a sound-proofed basement, loadsa terrain, a common bit box and a bunch of friendly neckbeards.
