So I've heard that Fantasy Craft tends to be very highly-regarded on /tg/, even though Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition and Pathfinder catch a lot of flak for various reasons.

How exactly is Fantasy Craft an improvement over either of those? What does it do differently?

Better balance, little to no trap options, a smaller selection of feats which are all flavorful, powerful and cool.
Martials kick tons of butt, mages are jacks of all trades but master of none (except for minor healing of vitality, which they're better at than mundane doctors.)
It also is not all spaghetti-coded, so you can change the way the system works easily without breaking a whole lot. Want no magic? It's gone. Want loads of magic? You can do that. There are campaign qualities that can be applied to alter the rules in significant ways without breakage.

Did I mention martials kick ass? Pic related -- there's a little bit of rules fudging involved in this story, but not a lot, and it's certainly not out of the ballpark for an FC session.

IIRC the social feats are vastly improved, or rather feats in general. Each feat in FC is like 2-3 normal feats in PF/3.5e. Additionally tricks in combat add another layer to martial complexity that gives them some welcome depth.

Then again I never played either of those systems, so take this with a grain of salt.

Trap options do not make up 75% of all options.
Lateral growth is more encouraged.
It has rules for everything.
The economy is prevented from being as big a pile of shit.
Being a martial is not suffering.

I don't know about modern, it's still pretty late 90s in its mechanical sensibilities, but it's certainly a well-designed example of such a thing.

A regular attack is a half action.
You can attack twice if you feel like it. (And don't have to do more than a 5-foot step.)
Instead of having to spend a feat to get a measly +1 on a weapon, or even training in one weapon, you get proficiencies per level.
A proficiency can be spent to get training with a whole swathe of weapons- Bows. Edged weapons. Blunt weapons. Black powder weapons.

Then if you want to be good at them, you can spend a second proficiency on them. That gets you +1 on attacks to all weapons in that category. Like Weapon Focus, but without applying to exactly one type of weapon.

You can also spend a proficiency to gain a trick. A trick is some particular kind of combat action you can do.

I made a barbarian, intending to go MUH GREATSWORDS.
Couldn't afford a greatsword at first level, so I grabbed a battle axe. I was just as good with it as I would have been with a greatsword. Later when I could afford it (and took Greatsword Basics,) I bought a greatsword. No biggy.

Later, I spent my first proficiency on a trick; Any time I hit someone with an attack, I can knock them back 5 feet. (And step after, if I wish.) No save. No check. Don't even have to do damage. Just "Did you hit?". It's kinda neat. For a MUSCLE STRONK barbarian, that's quite satisfying and fluffy, not to mention a bit useful.

Trap options area bit lacking. If you want to be good with something- for instance, great swords- You can usually just take "Greatsword Basics", "Greatsword Mastery", and "Greatsword Supremacy". Congratulations, you're really good at that thing. (Though generally even those kinds of feats have a bit of lateral utility.)
