Do you ever think FW will do an Emperor Class Titan? What is the biggest one? I know Imperators were the most common Emperor Class, there was an infamous one which got all the way to Siege of Terra for Chaos.

I heard somebody once say that if you did an exact scale Emperor class it'd be 4ft tall or something.

Either way, I'd love for them to do one. I hope if they do, they don't bother with the silly castle designs. But I guess most people would hate that.

I've been interested in playing 40k for a while now and I have some general questions.

I'm interested in playing Tau because I like how the army looks (I've actually got two boxes of untouched Fire Warriors I bought before going through some financial trouble), but there's a lot of negativity directed at the faction for it's cheese and I'd hate for that to taint my experience with the game. I've also been looking at Necrons and Chaos, or maybe some other factions. Is the blueberry hate mostly a /tg/ thing or is it pretty standard across the community.

I also know the basics of painting like priming, ect. Do you have any suggestions for priming an army in an apartment complex, since I lack a garage or general area where I can do something so potentially messy?

This might also be a dumb question but should I base my guys before or after priming them?

Also any other general tips for a potentially new player would be appreciated.

First, painting indoors is fine aslong as you aren't spray painting. Secondly, get a table and a shelf to sit on said table. Thirdly, you will be hated/loved by the community. People will hate your models because they think its too weeb or not grim darky. People will hate you for fielding tau because of stupid metas.

The only advise I have is to paint your models well and try to avoid waac faggots. Make your army original, distinct, amazing. But most importantly, make your army yours.

Tau hate is universal online. So is Necrons. In real life, most people won't bring their online negativity to the game, except for Eldar. That is the glaring exception. Eldar is practically unplayable because it is too strong.

Tau is high damage, high mobility. Necrons is a little slow, but unkillable. Chaos is all over the place.

If you have a balcony, prime there and bring inside. If not, just walk outside to the street and prime in the doorway or the sidewalk if no one's around.

It depends on how you are building your model. If you are building sub-assemblies, you can glue the legs to the base and prime, or you can base separately and use pins to connect the finished model or leave two spots unprimed on the base to glue onto.

If you are gluing sand and your own material to the base, you will need to prime that, but whether or not you attach the miniature is irrelevant. You can always attach it later on. Leaving the miniature off makes basing easier, but makes attaching the miniature a hassle since you have to pin or leave blank spots to glue. Basing with the figure on is easier for assembly but is a pain when trying to paint the feet and base and not get paint on the wrong part.

Can't talk about priming, as I've never done it. Never seen a need.
Best way to do it is to paint before assembly, as that allows you to focus on each individual part the most. So basing comes last.
Start small when building your army, unless you have alot of time and money. Don't bite off more than you can chew.

As for worrying about 'cheese', as long as you're not a WAACfag and have fun, nobody will give a fuck.

I certainly wouldn't. It's a mixture of annoyance and disbelief that certain factions are fellated by GW and many are downright crap.

/tg/ is not the best place to get a view on anything, nor is any internet community. There is nothing stopping you having multiple armies.

If I was you, I'd check Ebay and other auction sites for armies. Many sell decent size armies for dirt cheap. I got about £1000 worth of Lizardmen for £400 on Ebay. for example. If you're willing, many armies can be stripped of their paint and redone.

Furthermore, 3rd party sellers are 5%-30% cheaper than GW.

It's a hobby mate, do what you want, otherwise it's utterly pointless. It becomes a job to make sure people don't sperg.

Unless you're Ork, Nid, DE or BA's, you're probably going to be accused of cheese, and even Nid players will prob get shit for their Tyrants.

And for painting tech, get a cardboard box and cut it so it's a theatre shape (remove 3 sides, keep 'back' on) and line up your dudes there. Then spray them with the box attached to a window sill and the window open.

Or you can simply go outside and spray them then go inside. Depends on your spaghetti ratio.

If it's black, it reminds me of wasps.

I wanted to do a grey/white/silver Tau colour scheme, urban. But, as ususal, my disdain for fishfaces stops me.

Golden Dildos and Punk Girls are going to be my first "40k" army since 1999.

You have to work on your neat-ness but other then that, you have a core understanding on how to paint well. Looks stunning when you aren't nit-picking the details. You should try finding tutorials on how to give your models a "glossy" look though to make them look more cyber-spacy like tron. Also, look at your local paint store for florescent or glow in the dark paint. That would looking fucking stellar.

MLA formating is fine. The thing is, in order to get the right sentence size (as in, knowing when a sentence is long enough for autists not to get triggered by it's short length) is difficult unless you expand the text box every time. Perhaps there is a mod for this, but I'm not going to download a mod just so people like yourself and him don't get triggered by the length of the post. MLA formating is a thing. You're doing exactly the same thing as me. It's the new shitposting tactic, yet I've only seen it on /tg/. Most people on 4chan do the same and as such it's seen as normal. That's what I've heard from everyone, is there a recommended ratio for paint thinning?

Also how long does to take you to finish an average paint job for a grip of basic units? I'm trying to get an idea for what kind of time I'll have to dedicate to doing this so I'm not overwhelmed and set it to the side because I underestimated it.

This might not be something you all can help me with but I'm also trying to come up with a color scheme but I can't really think of anything that isn't either just dull or gaudy as hell, are there any colors that just straight up look good on Tau that I could toy around with?

I played in a tournament on the weekend with my Dread Mob formation. In my final game I charged a Riptide with two Deff Dreads. It took one wound.

In response it Smashed and exploded one Dread.

Next round I caused zero wounds, it Smashed again and rolled a 6 again.

My Gorkanaut killed a squad of Raveners in the entire Tournament. The Morkanaut killed nothing. In two of the four games, both died or were disabled on Turn 1, firstly by Grav and Haywire from Ad Mech, then by Melta drop-pod in the 2nd.

I also learned the hard was that Kastellan Robots or whatever the fuck they're called give precisely no shits about anything and will fuck up Deff Dreads that are so foolish as to attempt to charge them.

That's what I did. Basecoat black, then paint grooves, clean up the ones that actually got out by flicking the black over it quickly. What you're seeing there is actually the black bleeding into they yellow. I wanted ALL of the groove to be yellow, including the "walls".

Awesome tips, thanks. I'll touch him up between the time after I finish these Grey Knights I'm working on now and before my new Commander arrives. Also, for the exhaust, 1st layer orange, then red about halfway, then yellow about 1/3 of the way, and then white in the center maybe? That is if I start from the center of the bars.

Could just be Shrike was the better leader / warrior.

2nd Company Captain is Aaj Solari, and while he's apparently a successful commander and in charge of a dozen other Space Marine Chapters fighting Hive Fleet Leviathan, he's apparently a bit of a risk-taker, so probably not great Chapter Master material, especially for a careful and caution-driven Chapter like the Raven Guard.

I don't know who the 1st Company Commander is, but I assume it's Solaq. The RG already have the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, and maybe 5th Captains covered, and I doubt he's the Captain of a Support Company. Also his lack of Company colour markings, other than White (1st Company) or Black (Support Company), and the fact he leads a Vanguard and Sternguard Squad in the mini-campaign enforces this.
As for why he doesn't advance to Chapter Master, he's a new character compared to Solari and Shrike, and he failed to kill or capture Aun'Do, which apparently would affect the war on Dovar later.

Okay /tg/, I'm looking into getting a Vulture Gunship because I hate money and love flyers. What's a decent set up for the thing? I'm leaning towards the TL Punisher cause why not stick 2 giant Gatling cannons to a plane, but what else would feasibly work for it? In general the Dread Mob by itself can run into a lot of problems.

Tank Bustas and Mek Gunz are always nice to have with it but the problem is fitting those units into an army that is already expensive points wise with just the walkers.

Keep in mind in the campaign books the Imperium usually fares not so well in the first half but is victorious by the end of it.

Or it's been that way with the Sanctus Reach and Shield of Baal thus far.

They also usually have a third faction enter the fray that is neither Imperial or the original enemy.

A daemon at any time can just release his hold on his corporeal body and return to the Warp. You can't force an unbound daemon to stay where he doesn't want to.

I've been looking at the sprues on the website for the Tau Commander and I cant find any of the rounder heads like the one I used on this riptide. They came in the broadside kit too. Anyone see one? It is worth noting that they have yet to actually face a major threat, like a major Ork WAAAAGHH!, an Imperial Crusade that is isn't rerouted to fight a Hive Fleet, a true Hive Fleet itself, a Tomb World awakening, a Black Crusade, or a massive Daemonic Incursion. They've beaten most things they've come across, but they have really only dealt with the small fry on the galactic scale. The Imperium has overcome threats the Tau can't even fathom, and they would be nothing but a blue smear on the ground if a galactic power devote major attention to them.

It looked like the best all-rounder due to being just high enough of a Str to glance to death most vehicles due to weight of fire and strategic butt poking and hurt MC's also to due to weight of fire. The Tau faced an huge Ork Armada made up of 12 Waaagh!. The Waaaghs! covered their enire empire in Orks and they had to dismanle them.

The First Damcoles Crusade was a massive crusade according to recent fluff and according to the fluff the Imperial commanders in charge were planning to withdraw before the news of Behemoth hit them.

Fire caste stealth suits would be the kind of Tau unit to do that. They'd kill the HQ or command and then jack/impersonate voice over the vox comms. And even then it'd be something simple like "all forces, retreat".

1. How does water caste diplomats have hacking knowledge?
2. How can they trick without hacking when they're fucking blue Tau and not humans?
3. How do they have classified military knowledge of every Imperial enemy they face, who use encoded vox communications and keep all their grunts in the dark?

The Good:
-Talon Strike Force(RG-exclusive Gladius)
-Pinion Demi Company
-All the Warlord Traits are good, #2 is phenomenal and #6 is great
-The RG Objectives are good
-2 out of the 6 new RG formations are good, one being the VV charge from deepstrike
-5/6 of the relics. Ones a cool scout only sniper rifle with AP3 and armourbane.

The Bad:

-No bonus for 'full company' on the Talon
-1 out of the 6 RG formations is very bad, not subpar, but bad. The Bladewing Assault Group. I'm confused as to why they thought it was worth it. Its all assault units but its very rules prevent them from assaulting up to three game turns. I normally dont like to label things as bad, especailly early on, but I honestly cannot ever see this being taken.
-That one relic thats a jump pack that grants strike down which, literally, does nothing for CC anymore

The Ugly:
-The Talon Strike Force is not Tournament friendly as it grants rerolls for rolling for mission, deployment etc which most events have preplanned. The other two rules, option choose to fail morale whenever and roll for reserves starting turn 1 however are pretty good.

-Pinion is Talon Strike force only and the Talon force has its own set of Aux formations that it can only take, so all the new RG ones and only 10thCo, 1stCo, Stormwing, AntiAir, and Suppression
-3 of the RG formations are OK, but nothing special. One is a generic version of Strike Force Solaq(IE you can kit out your VV, and Stern however you want.

So overall 7/10 for me. Would have been 8.5/10 if Tau didn't get strictly good/better everything. That last 1.5 is just from very strange rule writing that makes no sense considering how good some of the stuff is. I though the days of 'Hit or Miss' rules in a single release were ending.

This is way too convoluted, because people would have to do division for ranges every time they shoot.

The 50% rule could work okay, and I believe some weapons even have this effect, but having every gun have to divide by 1/2 and 3/4? That's a pain in the ass.

The only weapon that does this is Conversion Beamers and similar. You might be better off simply listing specific ranges, e.g. 24", 36", 48", 72" and if a weapon doesn't fit those ranges, ignore that rule. Make it a USR.

They have actually faced a major Waagh!, and the Damocles Gulf Crusade only got routed to fight the Nids once the Imperials were already losing (the High Lords saw no point to keep spending resources for a crusade that wasn't really doing anything, when said resources could have been spent to fight Tyranids). Plus the there are a few times whne the Tau have fought against Necrons on a planet that turned out to be tomb world (once whent hey were at first fighting Ultramarines for the control of the planet, then teamed up with them when Necrons showed up and started killing everybody, and the other time when they were fighting against Nids and Necrons showed up and killed both sides).

The Space Marine bike known as Wrath of the Heavens was constructed to possess the speed of the storm itself, upon the orders of the former Master of the Hunt, Khantak Khan. The Taucurion (because you're enver going to play non-formation Tau again given how massively good those bonuses are) doesn't allow Tetras and the only way to take a Skyray is to take the formation that also has 3 Hammerheads, so you're left with drones and PFs. Drones are great with a drone controller Commander, but can't hit the broad side of a Baneblade with their normal bs, so I'd personally use one unit of drones with a Commander, and two small units of PFs to provide some extra markerlights.

PFs also do have some useful upgrades for the Taucurion. Pulse accelerator gives all pulse weapons of units that fire at the same time +6'' range, and PFs are the other convenient source of locator beacons (other being the Stealthsuit shas'vre).

Actually, the Kauyon supplement ends with a cliffhanger reference that the Farsight Enclaves are mobilizing to come to the defense of the rest of the Tau in the face of the coming onslaught. Shadowsun wins the battle in Kauyon, but the Imperium is determined to win the war, and they're sending a ri-fucking-diculous force after getting spanked by an enemy they thought trivial.

Basically, it means we're getting a new Farsight book called Mont'ka some time in the near future.

One of them had fists and just smashed the Dread open. Oh, and the Overwatch took two HP off. But it was more the utterly insane survivabilty they had. 5++ invul with a 5+ FNP afterwards and three wounds meant that the two wounds I caused overall did nothing.

I didn't have any Kans nearby (he had 4 Grav servitors and 4 with Haywire, so the Kans did not last long). They'd also only wound on 4+ because Kans are only Str 7 now.

Plus Kans hit on 4+, whereas the Dread at least hit on 3+. Though I think from memory I rolled 5 1's and 2's anyway.

Speaking of Taucurion limitations - is there any way at all to take any of the named characters in any of the formations, much less the detachment of formations? You might be able to finangle a CAD in. Cheap 50 point HQ like Darkstrider or whatever his name is, min troops, then 3 Skyrays 3 Tetras? I have no idea what the point values are, but Tau units are relatively cheap thanks to lol200 point Riptide. As long as you're not spamming retarded Stormsurge and Ghostkeel squads or 9 man crisis teams you should have the points.

Unless the Taucurion requires a lot of points commitment, which it just might. I haven't looked at the list carefully, I just know they have some crazy auxilary bonuses like deepstriking braodsides.

Decurion formations that feature generic HQs will have a little rule at the bottom saying you can swap the generic HQ for their rank's equivalent named hero. If they don't have this line, you have to use the generic one. The Necrons and Marines can use their heroes so the Tau might be able to too.

Ah, just checked it and I did in fact miss that. You can only take them in the optional "Command" formation Contingent Headquarters (which has no bonuses outside of the Hunter Contingent detachment stuff), and it's only for Shadowsun and/or Aun'Vaor/Aun'shi. So, no love for Darkstrider at all and definitely (but somewhat obviously) no love for Farsight.

I'll keep reading them over again and see if one of them has the option to take Darkstrider, but I kind of doubt it. He's relatively easy to ram in there with a cheap CAD, though, and if you're taking him then it means you're probably running a Fire Warrior defense gunline anyway.

The Farsight Enclave are neither militant or assholish. Farsight left the Tau Empire mostly because the truths he uncovered must never be known in the Empire. He was tainted and he can never return.

Then a Grey Knight found him and then both of them spent sometime traveling across a thousand worlds fighting Chaos and trying to master fate before it masters them.

Nah, I just ran out of points. I wasn't able to take a KFF on the Morka because of the Community Comp rules which the tournament was running, and even then the Dread mob was 1329 points. I had two basic boyz mobs in Trukks for fast Objective Secured, two squads of 7 Tankbustas in Trukks, and a naked Warboss to give me WAAAGH. Came to 1850 exactly.

Mek Guns would doubtless have helped, but really, I was expecting softer lists than what I encountered, and the Dread Mob just isn't very good against most lists. I did get a victory against a Nid player, though mainly I suspect because the Tournament limited FMCs to 1 per army.

And yeah, the Kastellans were in a group of 3. 2 had arm guns, 1 had fists.

None, it was points limitations. We were allowed 9 points, but under Community Comp Kans cost 6 points for 9 of them (which you MUST take for the Formation) if you also have a KFF. Orkanauts are also 1 point then cumulative 1, so the two Orkanauts I MUST take would cost 3 points. KFF is another point, which would take me over the limit.

Huh? Walkers can hold objectives. They can't carry ones like the Relic and they don't have Obj Secured unless you're running a FW Dread Mob list, but they can certainly hold them.

My biggest issues were 1) Melta and other AP1 weapons deleting my Orkanauts before they could do anything 2) Grav immobalizing stuff and 3) Haywire. My Morkanaut died in my 4th game to close combat with Fire Warriors.

I haven't done any lists yet, but I think the Taucurion will be pretty tight on points, since to get most benefit from the buffs, you want to take a lot of things in the decurion, plus there's quite many mandatory choises in the hunter cadre (granted, a lot of those can be just some cheap unit like drones of minimum-sized FW squads), and some choises that are for all intents and purposes mandatory (you require at least one commander for the formation, and you'd be a fool not to give him the full buffmander setup). It should be noted that Taucurion isn't as reliant on markerlights as other Tau are, since combining fire of at least 3 units gives them +1 bs, multiple units can benefit from the same lights and the buffmander can give multiple units rerolls to hit and ignores cover. So having one marker drone unit and a few PFs should probably be enough.

Darkstrider would be amazing with the Taucurion bonuses, though, so if you have the points and you play somewhere where you're allowed to do it (most tournaments where I live allow only two detachments and make decurions count as two for balance reasons), taking him and two minimum-sized FW squads, plus some Tetras would be a good choise. Taking him as part of Farsight Enclaves army migth also work since you get to replace the two FW units with battlesuits, but it's unclear whether Farsight can take Tetras (I belive FW in some email said no, but they've never really made an official statement).

Except they haven't been mercenaries since the first Tau codex, and they're not even militaristic and assholey since the last codex.

It's kind of funny, really. Farsight Enclaves used to be described as the more grimdark version of the Tau Empire, with Farsight becoming disillusioned with the Greater Good and decided the whole "peacul coexistance" thing doesn't work in the grim darkness of the 40k galaxy, and set up his own heavily fortified and militaristic enclaves populated entirely by the fire caste.
Then the supplement came out and made Farsight the most noblebright person in the galaxy, who is still loyal for the ideals of the Greater Good but considers the Ethereals to be evil dictators, and his enclaves are a democracy where all four castes live in harmony, free from the tyranny of the Ethereals.

Dread Mob list will be greatly superior always because it gives you flexibility. The Dread Mob formation bonuses don't really outweigh that; 'Ere we Go is quite nice, but the Hammer of Wrath D3 hits isn't that good given that Kans and Dreads are Str 5, and Orkanauts are Str 8.

Though why on earth Deff Dreads and Orkanauts don't get Ere We Go in the first place, given that they're piloted by Orks, is quite beyond me.

That's part of the problem, their limit is reaching a stalemate with a modest sized Imperial force, and yet they can still shit on WAAGGHS and tyranids. They are too successful for what they are. They must have FTL, just not one with very long range. Tau doctrine emphasises attack on supply lines, headquarters, and logistics. On the ground, this is accomplished by stealth teams and deep strikes.

The Vetoc book is unclear whether they have FTL during the 3rd sphere expansion (it just mentioned them developing new drives that allow them to travel at previously unimagined speeds; considering their previous drives were already near-lighstpeed, that could very well mean FTL). A WD entry after the Vetoc codex mentions the Tau having Warp-skimming FTL drives (same as they used to have in the old fluff), and the Apocalypse Warzone: Damocles has the Tau fleet travel at speed that is only possible with FTL travel, so it can be assumed the old description of Tau FTL is still canon, but instead of developing it right at the beginning of the 1st sphere expansion they only got it in the 3rd.

It's the same reason that you shouldn't pay too much attention to numbers given. Either they set the number way too low, or way too high. Because guess what, they want to make a story, they want to add some cool background lore, not sit down and spend hours researching all kinds of minor details.

It only gets ridiculous when the numbers used are so obviously way out of scale for the average viewer. A space Marine chapter of a 1000 marines cannot defend shit, because they straight up don't have the man power to do anything. I still remember a certain engagement in the dampness where the white scars lost a good 50 marines, which, if true, would be devastating to the chapter, yet they brush it off as an acceptable loss. Losing 5% of your entire force in a fight where you achieved exactly nothing, is never fucking acceptable.

Harsh truths time:

Necrons are mostly about never fucking dying. You will nearly always get two saving throws against any attack unless it comes from a D weapon, which are rare and restricted mostly to Superheavy vehicles/walkers. Great shooting, with decent assault elements if you want to build for that.

Tyranids you better like Flying Hive Tyrants. Everything else in the codex is overpriced crap and you'll usually lose 80% of your models in every game you "win".

Orks need a ton of help from formations and the Ghazghkull supplement to work, but god damn if you can't make a tremendous mess of things. Be prepared to run either Bullyboyz or Green Tide.

The Monolith is probably the only unit in the codex that you simply can't make work anymore. Avoid it at all costs. Yes, I know it's a cool set piece model and an iconic part of their armies, but it's just such a pile of shit in the new codex and the other options are so incredibly strong.

You should really look at the new codex before you look at models you're buying. The reason we call these new "detachment of formation" things everyone gets a "Decurion" is because the Necron codex invented that concept, and it still probably has the best one. It has some funky requirements that make you take units you wouldn't expect to (Tomb Blades, specifically), so you're going to want to flesh out a starter list with those constraints in mind.

That said, the Decurion is so strong that a lot of people don't even want to play against it, but you can take pretty much the same list inside a CAD as well if you need/want to water it down for a more casual game.

That's just bad writer inconsistency, because the same writers can have characters talk real-time with someone located in another solar system without any issues, so they clearly do, he just didn't have his draft properly checked before it got printed.

I don't play Necrons myself so I'd have to look at the 7th edition dex to break it down more, but since 7th edition is all about building your army by combining a bunch of formations it's pretty critical knowledge for figuring out what's good.

Canoptek Harvest is another one of the really, really strong things Necrons have now. Wraiths got a big buff and the formation makes them even stronger.

There's also the time when Blood Angels somehow managed to to lose 80% of their chapter in a single space hulk, and aaparently bounced back from the losses just fine. Now, BA are stated to be able to make new marines at a faster rate than othe chapters due to the weird method they use where the recruits are infused directly with the Primarch's blood, but that kind of losses should still ahve been crippling.

On the other hand, Crimson Fists were seriously crippled by losing their fortress-monastry and several companies.

The only good Tau flier is the Barracuda and that's Forgeworld. FW Tau units are somewhat awkward to take now, though; with all the new formations locked to specific unit types you have to shoehorn in a CAD if you want to take anything interesting.

Even then the Barracuda's really not that good compared to just building AA Riptides. Shit, now you can even make AA Ghostkeels... as long as you can jump them into range the combination of ignoring cover and always hitting rear armor is easily going to wreck any flier with their high BS5 S7 guns.

Spaceships are often described as exiting the Warp at different points while en route, especially in area where there are lots of disturbances in the Warp and the Astronomican is not properly visible, since even with navigators travelling through the Warp is not 100% accurate and you occasionally need to enter realspace to check your bearings and adjust course accordingly. At those times ships are vulnerable to attack. Eldar and Ork pirates frequently use that as an opportunity to attack Imperial shipping lines, and Tau could probably do the same.

They have to be pretty damn accurate to predict where the ship is exiting the Warp and attack before it can get away in a vast area. I believe writers never put much thought in Warp travel in 40k and imagine maritime supply lines.

That's correct, but the Ghostkeel unit is the lynchpin of the formation so that makes sense. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to bring it unless you're bringing at least two Ghostkeels if not three, since you can always slap target locks on them. Remember that they get +1 BS for having a full unit in addition to +1 BS for the formation bonus, so that's BS5 if you take a three model unit. Losing a single Ghostkeel isn't terribly hard, but losing all three, with all those ablative drone wounds? That's a very durable unit.

Full BRRRRRRRTTTTTTTT every time every day. Gatling Cannon Vulture is damn good flyer. Twinlinked, vector dancer, strafing run... its just sick. Normally people dont see the full value of Vector Dancer but being able to position yourself into angles where you want to go is damn good ability. More than once I have sniped something out of unit because I danced my way behind it.
