How does one run a Maze?

It's pathfinder, if you must know.

I want to throw my players in a time-lock dungeon. Where they enter and are locked in for an unspecified amount of time. Inside is a magical wizard's maze. I'm thinking he's using it for a vault, probably tucking away a minor artifact. Since it's a pirates campaign, I'm thinking of taking a page from the movies and making the artifact a compass that leads to the current holders goal.

But anyways, I'm not sure if I should run your typical, wall maze or just a complex working of rooms. I have an idea, where there are powerful monsters roaming the halls. When one is slain, some walls retract, making the maze easier.

The problem with your typical maze is that it's really just a time-sink. I don't know how to make "You've been here 3 times already. The road ahead forks left and right."

Have you ever ran a maze before? Tips? Advise?
