Almost 100% certainly Lizardmen. All of their units have disappeared from the website. If it's just a rebasing as opposed to new models is unknown.

Theyre kits are pretty old. The skinks and saurus have been around since what, 6h ed? They were new for the 6th ed book. Most of the current lizardmen infantry and cavalry are from around then. Temple guard are more recent, but theyre still fairly old, they have slottabases. The monsters are from the 8th ed book I think, theyre more recent.

The really interesting thing is what theyre going to do about the fact that theyre slottabases. Are they doing to ship them all with 25mm round slots? Or are we going to see the first 32mm slots? Or are they just going to say fuck it and tell you to cut them off.

This is the style Im hoping they go with for new models, its the bonus guy from the carnosaur kit. Hes the only saurus that isnt on a slottabase, outside of the blister oldblood.

So like I've been out of the loop for a while. Basically after all the ruckus with AoS I took a break since it coincided with my local shop closing.

A new one opened a couple weeks ago and now I'm actually getting around to looking into AoS now. I remember people were discussing pointing stuff then, but it seems like there's an established system now.

How's it working? For those that have used it.

It's alright. Needs polish, but it's fun. They streamlined the game in a good way but they need to reign it back a little bit and add slightly more rules and complexity.

Lots of people use scrollbuilder.com to give it some semblance of balance.

Wait, all the lizardmen stuff is gone from the webstore, and we have no idea whats goinmg to happen in the coming week or two. The least you should do is wait to see if they get rebased.

Also, I dont think the battalion is worth the money, saurus warriors arent great, temple guard are better, the cav are meh. Unless you want the models, skip it and get two boxed of temple guard, a character (Your choice), and another box of your choice, I recommend the bastilodon or the ripperdactyls. Personally I started with temple guard, and oldblood and gor-rok. I'm waiting to see if we get new dudes or new bases before buying more, which suits me fine as college is hectic at the moment, and I dont have time to play. I started this army for AoS and it was supposed to be a slow burn to relax with during my thesis.

Well, what really helped me improve was learning how to properly use washes and glazes, I think they can really give depth and polish to a miniature.
I also relied a lot on technical paints like the 'ardcoat, the ryza rust or the nurgle's rot.

Cheers guys! I'm just looking over the warscrolls right now, and I think Bastilodon and Ripperdactyls are an absolute must at some point.

One question though - are Chameleon Skinks as useful as they seem? Because they look really versatile/high ruse potential.

Saurus Cav was never particularly good even in WHFB. It's a shame. Their main reason was their 3+ Save (5+1+2 mount) and WS4. But AoS doesn't take into account mount save bonuses from back then. They're also awful models. Dark Eldars Cold Ones are great, it's a shame LM are still Derps.

Thanks for the pointers - the Chameleons did seem cheesily good. Also, any bastiladon I get will definitely be featuring a solar engine.

I think I'll mostly be playing against Tomb Kings, and their reanimation powers sound pretty intimidating. Any playstyles to avoid when fighting skellingtons?

Ones that risk your slann. The battle may be decided by whoever kills the enemy summoners first, don't put yours in unnecessary danger.

Might be worth setting a turn limit for the battle, in case it does end up going on.

Heavy cav just needs to be in a rhythm of charge-retreat-charge-etc. to maximise the bonuses they get. It's a different role to before, that's all, leave the brawling to the heavy infantry.

This ability adds 1/4 of those 0.34 as mortal wounds: A stunning +0.08 mortal wounds per model and charge turn.
I'd say that's pretty shit, and not worth missing half of your combat phases while still getting shot at for.

Granted Bretonnians get great bonuses for charging, but that's their gimmick. Others get some thing like +0.5 wounds while charging that still doesn't make it worth it imho. It's sad because they're supposed to be the price and joy of every army.

The new blisters are all chopped up in Autocad or whatever they use to design them, thats why theyre split into pieces along weird fucking lines.

Just chop off the sides of the square base and then glue it onto a round base, use a 32mm one. It works like a charm, a few rocks and some green stuff makes it invisible.

How good is the Stormcast half of the starter set? Is it worth getting over the regular boxed versions of each unit (I'm assuming the starter set doesn't have all the possible weapon options etc)

Also does anyone have any pics of better colour schemes than the default gold? I can't help but feel that they'd look at least twice as good with a less shit tier paint scheme

If you're starting either of them as an army, get the starter kit (ebay/elsewhere) for the heroes, books, exclusive mini's, & everything else, & then expand out from there, depending on what units you to expand/bits you lack (e.g. superior javelins for the Liberators, more Retributors b/c they rock, etc.)

If you're just looking for a unit to reinforce your allied ORDER army with, then it's a tougher call, depending on what you do w/ the Khorne half of the set.

I actually use the indented round bases that other companies sell, and the chopped down square base fits snug into that recess.

Nope. The Battalion box is just not worth the money. You won't be needing both Skinks AND Saurus Warriors, as to make either effective you need to build their formation (and fielding both formations would be too big an army for a standard game). Saurus Cavalry are also just not worth it.

Gives you good reach across the board to pick away at characters and monsters. Even knocking a monster down by 2 wounds can make a difference when it gets to fisticuffs, and wizards often don't have great saves so can be taken out. Don't try to outshoot a gunline with judicators though, that won't work.

For ranged how is the Venator? On paper it looks pretty sweet to me. Plenty of basic dakka and that sweet FU super arrow

Anyways, if you want to see/know more of the Stormcast, Ash plays them a lot in the Guerrilla Miniature Gaming "realms of battle" (reports) on youtube. He adds on an Order wizard for dispells/spells, & Ogre Ironguts for melee damage, but Retributors do a decent job of that anyways, especially with the ShatterSoul Maces.

Judicators w/ bows are usually the way to go for shooting.

I agree the Knight Venator flying around with Prosecutors would be pretty cool. Offhand, I don't know if there is a Battle Formation that enhances an air force like that, but either way.

I don't know if a Celestant-Prime is worth the $80, since roughly half of that goes toward a big base & some swirly bits, which if you're crafty/research more online, you can prolly upgrade/kitbash a Prosecutor into a passable Prime.

If you're not married to the idea of using official GW paints for everything (though their washes are top shelf)--our club's painter extraordinaire is big on the Vallejo Air Paints as they don't need additional thinning down for brush painting, otherwise Stormcast would take well to an airbrush if you have the set-up.

Anyways, grab the Stormcast Battle Tome .pdf out of the opening copy-pasta if you haven't already, & get to reading! Find/create fluff for the Green/Silver Warrior Chamber!

Because we never really got around to playing Fantasy or getting decent sized armies. We started about a year before AoS dropped. Since we like to only play with painted figures building armies was slow. We only played a couple of 500 point games.

Since we never properly played we just decided to modify the AoD rules to our liking and start from a blank slate.

I've been looking to get into Warhammer Fantasy in the last few weeks and I didn't really pay attention to this Age of Sigmar stuff, thinking it was probably just a new figures edition or something. Also, I've noticed the no point thing for armies and that's probably the biggest thing scaring me away from starting to play... What's stopping other players to destroy me everytime I play since there's no way to balance armies? Even if we have two armies of the same "size", the other guy can bring in more powerful units than me without me ever knowing it because I lack knowledge about the game.

You cant use any of the new stormcast, because they have no official rules, but if you put anything else on square bases you can still play WHFB.

You could try one of the comp styles listed in the OP, the clash of swords one is my personal favorite. It'll give you a fair basis to balance games, and once you have a few games under your belt you'll have a good idea of the strengths of individual units, and can move towards not needing a comp.

Its not between new and old, its a 3 way split:
- Vets who don't like the new game and are dissapointed its not supported anymore. You usually wont meet these people because they just moved on, or still play 8th.

- People who like AoS, new players and vets.

- Shitlords intent on ruining the fun of anyone who plays AoS. You'll see them here shitposting a lot, ignore them.

In theory only the stormcast eternals don't have a fantasy equivalent (even the khorne stuff can be run as something else) so providing you put stuff on square bases you can play fantasy. As to whether you can it depends on your local scene, really, we can't answer that for you. If your local scene is a GW don't despair, it's manager's discretion if they allow 8th to be played in store, your local guy may be cool with it.

Balance wise, yes, it will come down to "don't be a dick". If it's any consolation, the sort of people who'll stomp a new player because they don't know what's good would probably have stomped you anyway if there was a points system, some dickheads just like stomping new players. Again, it's about your local scene.

Anon please. With a bit of creativity you could use any miniatures for any game. There's nothing to stop him using AoS miniatures for 8th, and there's nothing stopping him from learning all of the armies and some of their units so that he doesn't get destroyed.

Jesus seriously, I know people want to shit on AOS, but look at this fucking thing.

Even at $80 retail, it's fucking plenty on par with or better than 90% of what you can get out of other companies for $80.

I didn't play WFB, so I don't feel the sting of the way the game flipped on its head, but as someone who's rolled Warmachine since 2008, I am seriously jealous every time I see AOS releases that look better than 90% of the PP range...

I don't even play AOS and I bought the mounted Stormcast out of the battle box just as an awesome model to paint.

AoS' simplicity actually generates somewhat realistic tactical options and results, for eg. a unit of spearmen quite benefit from keeping to a large block whilst your hand weapon units will need to keep numbers low and spread themselves thin to maximise attacks (but making them more vulnerable). So, how do they handle this? They spent tons of money on this shit. They grew up with this game. They can't just go "fuck it, give it all up". They need some reason, any reason to still like it and accept that it's not bad. But how can you do that when it's objectively dumbed down and shittier? By becoming a radical. Any criticism must be shitposting. It has to be, because if it's not then they have to accept the truth. The truth that the game they loved was fucking desecrated and ruined. And, not only that, but GW felt the need to rub it in even more by giving out joke rules initially to give a "respectful farewell".

I don't hate the players. I feel bad for these people because GW just made an entire generation of sycophants who just want a good game. And they fucked them like they were the prison bitch for so fucking long and so hard that now they've come to believe it. To believe that this game is good. To keep spending their money on this company after GW cockslapped them right in the fucking face and disrespected everything WHFB was. "B-B-BUT THE MODELS ARE AMAZING!" Yeah, go buy some toys if you want models. It's not about the models and never was, stop lying to yourselves. It was about the hobby and the game, not glorified toddler toys. Get a grip, guys. Come on, you don't have to take this lying down like a bitch.

There are 8 realms that humanity lived on. 7 of which were almost completely subjugated by chaos.

A lot of pockets of human resistance exists on many of the realms, as well as the realms being so vast, that you will have just about every flavor of humanity still in existence in the warhammer universe.

This means that while old world bretonians are dead, there is likely still a group of humans with knightly orders worshiping an aquatic deity.

For this you have 2 options. They either are Azyr refugees, Ones who allied themselves with Sigmar and went to live in the last place where chaos couldn't get to. Or they are a resistance who have held out against chaos for the last hundreds of years.

So the bad new in all of this is old bretonian lore is gone. The good news is you have complete freedom to make your own knightly orders and cultures without worrying whether it fits with the lore, because in this just about anything goes.

I get that you feel theres lack of high stakes because its not one small mapped out world, but I would argue that it's better now because you can actually progress a setting without wiping out a whole faction.

For example, say you play some games a lose terribly, then your story progresses that your kingdom gets razed and your knights become nomadic. You can do this without wiping brettonia from your setting.

He told you. There are lots of ways to balance the game. In the OP there are popular fanmade balance systems, and other simply use wounds which isnt perfect but generally pretty good. Then others balance forces through narrative.

Trying to look at teh game as a competitive balanced forces that clash isnt the best way to treat AoS. You want to tell a story and simulate a battle using the game. This is done through personalizing heroes and creating/using scenarios and battleplans.

As a personal note, I can agree on many decisions but loathe what they did to fantasy in the first place, "do what the fuck you want but buy the shit" also is a very lazy (or greedy, depending on the point of view) stance for a company with the potential of GW, cutting on design and artists, choosing quantity over quality is too

Wether or not this will prove successful or if licensing games about the old world but selling a different one will be short sight is yet to see

Multiple layers of Wazdaka Red with a Red Sunz Scarlet highlight around the edge of the shield, and on raised areas and curvature of the pauldrons. It looks a bit darker in person, and it could be smoother.

God damn right they are. The only difference is it is easier to find discounts because of how PP does retail business. DGI and Miniature Market get 25-30% off retail. For GW, that's absolute heresy for a retailer to offer that kind of discount - even moreso giving that discount online.

Fucking $50+ dollerydoos for a goddamned unit of plastic infantry that aren't half as good of sculpts as 40k / WFB / AOS. $35+ for a fucking 50mm scale plastic Heavy Beast / Jack that's covered in mold lines running through the details. Easy to get into, but go figure changing your game up isn't as easy as swapping your caster. It's all relative. X Caster goes with X infantry goes with X beasts goes with the generic support package - there are some commonly used staples for an army but X Caster doesn't jive well with Y beasts and Z infantry.

And don't get me started on the "competitive" tier lists that encourage x6-8 of the same fucking model that you would never take otherwise.

Welcome. This is a cool game. It is a tabletop wargame, but approaching it to tell a story through battle is one of the better ways to play it.

Most wargames are about trying to compete with an opponent, like who can outsmart the opponent and bring a more powerful force. Age of Sigmar is not the game for that.

This game is for playing with another guy and trying to build a narrative battle. It's more than just defeat the other guy, it's about getting from one end of the map to the other alive. It's about taking that tower in the center and holding it for a turn or 2. It's about assassinating that one hero you have a vendetta against in your opponent's force. It's about building your own game and story out of it.

Time is the most expensive resource you will need because a large part of it is the hobby. That is collecting, assembling, and painting miniatures. The more care you put into it the more pride and joy you find in it. So make sure when you are choosing an army, that you choose something that aesthetically pleases you, and not one that is the most powerful.

Money is an issue sometimes because these miniatures are expensive, but to start out you do not need much. You can start with a box of troop looking guys and a big hero guy and call that your army. It can be your hero's first steps on the warpath to building his empire. Over time of course it can grow and add more things that you think look cool and bolster his forces.

But all in all the goal really is to have fun.

Let me expand on this a little further on how to make a simple narrative campaign going with a friend.

Step 1) Your first game.
You 2 get a basic battle going as per the rules. Choosing forces that could look roughly equal and battle it out, again as per the rules. The player who wins, get's to roll on the triumph table. This is the reward for winning. The triumph tables are in the basic rules, and in the Time of War rules that are in the campaign books (Swenson has a compiled PDF in the OP).

Step 2) The second game. The story continues.
Now the player who lost the battle gets an opportunity to set up the terms for the next battle. He chooses the battleplan and limits and special rules to try to make it a challenge for the player who won. You are free to invent your own scenarios, and using battleplans (again in Swenson's link in the OP) as inspiration helps. Then you 2 battle again. The winner gets to roll on the triumph tables.

Step 3) A story forms.
Now you start to see a narrative form out of this. Perhaps one squad leader from a unit is seeking revenge against that monster who wiped out his last unit. Perhaps the General's concern is capturing that enemy Wizard so he may force him to their cause. It's really up to you. This process continues and you end up having a full fledged narrative campaign.

THAT is how you play Age of Sigmar.

As someone who has dumped at least over a grand into PP models since 2008, I can say that if you're playing to be "competitive" that the game aint as simple as "lol just buy the core units and swap ur caster bro!"

If you want to field a single 50 point army, yeah there are lists you can do that in for under $200 easy - even if you paid full retail. Especially since the 35 point boxes came out which sold like hotcakes even for the less popular ones. Instant 35 point army for $120-130, and that can be bumped up to 50 points easily for less than $60.

The rub on the whole thing though is that the game is pushed pushed pushed to the hilt to be maximum WAAC. Warmachine is a game of precision and rules. I have played fairly consistently since 2008 and there are still rules I end up forgetting because each model comes with its own adorable set of rules. Line of sight and arcs for melee get measured with laser lines. Melee distances are calculated in half inches. Everything is utterly exacting.

Not to get off on a tangent - my point being that the average player is going to find when they hop in their first Steamroller tourney, their little babby's first 50 point list is going to get dickstomped by an optimized killing machine. Since the game is so heavily pushed to "50 Point Steamroller, Timed turns, Final Destination," they're going to find themselves woefully reaching for that wallet to buy the more "competitive" models and casters quickly.

Your Meta May Vary of course, but everywhere I've gone this has remained constant about WM. Some say that consistency is a good thing, others a bad. Comes down to flavor.

Dunno. I haven't priced a "Tournament" 40k army with multiple squads waiting in the wings.

If anything skews the price up for 40k IMO, it's a WYSIWYG mentality combined with squads being able to pack multiple weapon types or loadouts on the same squad.

That encourages some people to end up buying multiples of the same unit (or just extras) to have them kitted out a certain way.

Warmachine has Unit Attachments, but that's pretty much it. The loadout for a specific unit / vehicle / hero can't be changed remotely as much as it can it 40k.

Warma makes up for this with the fucking tier lists though.

Hey guys thought I'd share our in house rules. As ex 40k players some of us couldn't (not saying names....Lee) get their head around the fact you could take what ever you want in a game, so I have designed an army organisation chart. This doesn't apply to formations but we agree in house whether or not the game uses formations.
*notes
"ambush" units are your cavalry, plague drones etc and are capped at 10 models per unit.
*Core - basic troop
*Special- a unit slightly better than your average troop (core unit) eg iron gut, storm vermin, grave guard, elves executioners, blightkings etc.
*Summoning - you can only summon units lost during the game so you can't exceed the starting wound limit.
Decide whether a game has
summoning or not (usually if both players can summon)
Other than that all other rules apply.
Let me know what you think... Bare in mind this is aimed at 'friendly games' (if that exists) and people just starting out.

Just as I don't like it when people hate on me playing the game, I also don't like people hating on the way I play it.

While I like the chart, I would only do a couple things to change it. I would do the following:

- do an overall wound limit
- the only compulsory is the Hero slot
- single wound core units are treated as half-wounds

What do others think, how do you like to play the game?

In short. Old world got blowed up, chaos won. The 8 winds of magic exist as physical realms now and the war continues there.

Barring some exceptions, the fantasy miniature line is here to stay. They aren't canning it all so you don't need to furiously buy everything up.

WHFB as you know is gone. That game type is gone. Now there is a brand new completely different game they are doing that uses the fantasy miniatures line. That game is Age of Sigmar.

Yeah, for $35 I think it was. They've just put a 5th frame in the box.
I like how when the game was encouraging more models we were getting less per box, and the new one encourages less (fuck you if you think I'm shuffling 100 infantry guys around for six turns) yet they're giving us more.

The first houserule we introduced was to measure from base to base, since most of us have switched to round bases. Normally I wouldn't care about DLC, and in this case I figured Chaos and other core armies would be in the game later on anyway, either as DLC or expansions. Whatever, I get it, at the very least I can pretend they weren't ready yet.

But this shit? It's day one dlc, meaning they're done. They didn't need extra time or cash to make them, they're deliberately holding back an iconic army and banking on people giving in to the hype to squeeze more money out of them. They're trying to get away with milking people's love of an IP on an already full-priced game and have the GALL to market it as a bonus. It's disrespectful at best and fucking decadent at worst.

A game (as in, all of the content stated to be available at launch on disc) has to be finished several months before it's actual release to get the discs made and shipped out. Digital-only content can be worked on until a few weeks before its release.
Having some models to show off does not mean the Chaos Warriors faction is done, nor will be done before the game goes gold (as in, is ready for disc production), and being digital-only, can be worked on after the game goes gold.
Assuming there are physical discs. Nor is the art department working on the faction while the rest of the dev team finishes mechanics programming, bug fixing, etc, bad.

Basically, if there has to be physical copies made, the development schedule has been structured to get the game finished on time, and then the next faction finished in time for the launch.

Now, if the whole faction is present on the discs then yeah, fuck them, that's bullshit, because they were in fact done with everything else.

They have done Day 1 DLC since Empire. This is nothing new. In Empire you got unique units, for example. In Napoleon too. In Shogun 2 you got a different clan. In Rome 2 you got Sparta et al. This is nothing new.

Chaos are in the game regardless, the DLC just makes then playable. They are not removed from the game if you don't buy it, you just can't play it.

And if you ARE a fan of WHFB, I'm surprised you're not preordering it anyway, I mean, it's been 9 years since the last RTS Warhammer game and 15 years since the last good one.

I've wanted this since 2000, I couldn't give a toss at this point.

But, if you WANT this to change, you have to pressure them. Square Enix dropped their preorder bonuses for Dues Ex: Mankind Divided after pressure.

As for physical editions, there are Collectors Editions for each faction.

Dwarfs are the only one announced and shown so far. No unique models, so I'm upset. But you get a metal horn it seems, dunno if it's just a horn or a drinking cup.
