Painting help

So, I'm confused about something.

I've been reading/watching a lot of painting guides, and I see some people say you are supposed to prime, shade, base, and then dry brush, while others seem to say prime, base, shade, the dry-brush. Basically, I'm confused at the shade/ink/wash step. When exactly are you supposed to do it in the process?

Secondly, I have some Talisman figures I've "antiqued" by priming white, going over with black ink, and then drybrushing white. It's made them go from grey to...Well, grey, but they do look a lot better; they look more like little stone statues than plastic now. I was wondering if it would still be possible to paint them and keep some of the shading I have going on now, or if I would have to essentially start over from scratch. Anybody know?
