Personally I'd ditch Farsight and run both formations, but I'd also ditch all the superexpensive support systems for cheaper ones and max out my stealthsuits.

Ghostkeels don't really NEED that much survivability, and you can get oodles of shield drones and extra S5 burst cannon shots for the pricetag. You can even get both Stims and drones/more bodies if you play 1850, which is the new standard in most circles.

On a more serious note: A Droneport only costs 6 points over the Drones in it. If you start a commander attached to the unit riding it, then move on turn one into the dismounted drones you get a marker commander unit and a 6 point relentless 4+++ for the other dudes.

New to playing the game and my group gas just started tryimg out formations and detachments.

Ive gone with Necrons and im kind of confused by the Canoptek Harvest. Is it only one Spyder or a unit? Also with the routines if my scarabs and wraiths move outside of 12" from the spyder do they lose the benefit or does it still last until the next turn. Also wraiths ans scarabs already have fleet right? Whats the point of the fleet routine?

Sorry for the million questions just trying to play it right.

That seems reasonable, I sort of discounted the idea of investing in the stealth suit teams but in this context they're actually a solid unit. Personally I still like keeping the Stimulant Injectors since it makes the Ghostkeels viable melee units if they get stuck in a position where they have to charge or be charged. With a unit of three they're actually somewhat shockingly good in close combat despite their Tau WS and I scores; 3 attacks base at S6 AP2 and a bunch of Drone bodies to soak wounds in front of them makes them a lot better in a fistfight than you'd normally expect as long as they're not alone.

Orks, IG, SoB, AdMech, Spess Muhreens are all possibilities. SoB is a bit of a long shot but it is mentioned that they're on their way in the Kauyon book. If we get a surprise Sisters reboot next year - y'know, that one that's been "finished and awaiting release" for years now - that would be pretty cool.

Like many things in 40k I think it just comes down to who gets to shoot first. Since the Tau can deep strike and position so that it's hard to hit more than one or two units in the event that they don't kill it in one turn I think the Tau have the advantage.

The meta-formations are Raven Guard and White Scars only, but the regular formations are availiable to all. Both of them are actually pretty good, especially the Talon Strike Force.
Relics are also pretty baller.

A lot of people are quick to brand this shit. And I honestly don't know why.

It's blast is strong as fuck. And three of them combined make a strength nine monofilament large blast that fires three times. This fucking liquifies anything caught underneath it. I nearly prefer it to the fire prism, as it's only a hundred points.

It also has a torrent flamer mode of fire.

I run Tau with Necron allies. The rough backstory is that the Overlord find the Tau interesting and so backs them up. Two small forces that work together to kick ass.

The Overlord and Commander are both sticklers for honourable conduct and gentlemanly behaviour, so while they both are technically enemies and should be trying to integrate the other into their respective empires, they both owe each other too much to justify such distasteful "ending of the alliance".

Essentially it's two dudes trying to out-polite each other.

You lose the benefits, that said if you were to use the fleet routine to assault a unit outside of the 12" bubble, you'd still gain the benefit of it during the assault.

It's a unit. All evidence beyond some shoddy wording on the actual rule page points to a unit.

I have a question about the Farsight Enclave. I'd like to start a Tau army and fluff it as part of the Farsight Enclave but I'd like to paint it a different color, instead of red. The RG jump pack that gives +2str and strikedown to HoW attacks for the cost of a regular one is sweet as fuck
However I'm more stoked for the WS relics for some reason. That glaive looks pretty tasy on an army with Hit and Run, plus the glaive model looks bitching.
Plus 20pts for ignores cover, including the attached unit is rapetastic if you slap it on something with multiple plasma guns.

A previously unknown/obscure Slaaneshi Chaos Space Marine faction allied with Word Bearers and Black Legion, and they rip open a portal on a major Sept world that causes Daemons to spill out all over the place. The Tau barely beat it back, but it seems the Black Legion forces only focused on a particularly obscure moon of the Sept world, and focused all of their efforts on a specific research facility rumored to contain captured artefacts and relics.....

The CSM's retreat back to whence they came, and the Slaaneshi Lord contacts the Black Legion contingent of the raid - he may have discovered something of value to the Warmaster on the planet itself, and might be willing to generously donate it to the Warmasters cause....for the right price, of course.

That said, the way Tau work is that the Sept colour is the planet colour- Small markings only. T'au is white, not Ochre. Vior'la is Red, not that shitty, shitty white armour panelling they're pushing with the new release.

You can colour an army any way you like so long as you do squad marks in a planet colour.

Yeah I noticed I can't give him Iridium. I like the Coldstar idea, you can literally turn him into a cheapo harassment flyer, like a hornet that won't leave you alone. 6 S5 shots at BS5 and twin-linked is basically guaranteed hits.

One question though. Any drones are removed from play if they're swooping, so you can't take shield drones to provide him the defense if you use him as a flyer, yes? The drones only come into effect if he's gliding.

The coldstar would be improved by being able to take other weapon systems, putting out a few S5 and S7 shots isn't impressing anyone. For the same 145 points as a coldstar you can get a razorshark, and that's not exactly a common sight on the table.

Yeah, that's the other major point against him. Being able to run extra gun drones and a drone controller for greater firepower or shield drones for more survivability would go a very long way towards making him something similar to a dakka Flyrant - fast, mobile, very shooty harassment unit with solid survivability. Being forced to land in order to use your drones is just going to get you shot to bits. As it stands he just doesn't have enough going for him to be worth his points or his slot when you compare him against a buffmander or even just a very cheap missile commander.

Vindicares are snipers without any tools for melee other than a pistol and CCW. Despite their impressive stat-line a strength 8 attacks would instant death them should it pass their 4++.

I go all out with gun drones for any squads that are getting fireblade/ethereal buffs, just maximise the dakka. A fireblade, 12 strikers and 4 gun drones (2 belonging to the fireblade and 2 belonging to the squad) can put out up to 51 S5 shots, which is some shizzle.

Strike teams should always have Rifles tbh. They're great at shooting but while gunlines are stale and frowned upon, don't be afraid of having at least one team covercamp and pick targets.

Just do the Tau thing to do and retreat to a more advantageous position if the enemy comes down on you. Drones, you can pick whatever. Guns at more shots at a shorter range, shields make them more survivable. Markers are a bit wasted on them I think. Go with Gun drones or none at all.

As for turrets, see what you lack. SMS adds 4 more S5 shots with innate ignores cover and homing, but missile pod can add some light-vehicle-popping dakka. See what holes you need plugged up in your list and choose.

Well, lets assume you can take extra equipment as well. He's an FMC, which means he can fire two weapons base, and he has a multi-tracker, which means he can fire an additional weapon. What third weapon do you choose? Cyclic Ion Blaster? It brings the dakka, but the range is awfully short for a swooping FMC. Missile Pod? He's already got one and two missiles is a standard loadout for a lot of commanders/crisis teams. Fusion Blaster? Seems an odd choice, but zipping out of nowhere to shoot a tank in the ass could be cheeky as fuck. Do you just use all your loadout slots for even more guns so you can do something ridiculous like fire three fusion guns? It doesn't say the Coldstar guns take support system or weapon hardpoints, so he'd still have four hardpoints remaining.

It still doesn't seem good to me. If you could make him 2+ and T5 with Iridium he'd be worth considering, or if his drones could actually do anything while he's flying, but even an extra gun doesn't sell me on him. Almost, but not quite.

If you ally in Darkstrider and then attach him to a Fire Warrior unit in the Hunter Contingent you could also make the target of their combined shooting -1T.

Put an Ethereal in range of at least three and you get some truly jaw dropping dakka from your base infantry unit.

Hive guard also work as roaches, abit better ones
A harpy is more like a multalisk, then again it and the hive crone also make the versions they mutate from
A tergivon can act as a broodlord, or swarmhost
An exocrine can be a brutalisk, since they have a ranged attack, so can tyrannofexes
Genestealers make good infested terrans
If you want an exploding infested terran from the first game, there's a forgeworld spore mine that would work
A mawloc or trygon can be a nydus worm

You might want to look into forgeworld models and use custom models using their rules

You're making some pretty brave assumptions there. Any army with ground base AA is going to eat him alive before he can get there. Have we already forgotten how easy it is to ally in the Onager Dunecrawler into imperial armies? Even one of those with the AA setup would demolish this poor bastard before he can call in his friends.

Fair enough, it can be good as a barebones coldstar but it's not really useful on its own. It needs to be used to trigger a better tactic and once it does it's fairly useless.

I am thinking of how to run my single crisis suit with WYSIWYG cause I can't be fucked buying more models or parts right now. If I run them as the expensive commander, I'll have the better statline for shooting purposes. Hwoever if I run him as a basic Crisis Shas'vre, I free enough points to be able to take: EMP grandes on 2 max FW squads, homing beacon for stealthteam to make him DS properly and a 5-base squad of Scarabs for my Necron allies.

Add a buffmander with Command and Control node (re-roll failed to hit rolls), Multispectrum Sensor Suite (ignore cover) and Puretide Engram Neurochip (tank/monster hunter)

The drones can't block shots while swooping, so he has to survive long enough to make his grounding check. Honestly I'm not sure you even need the shield generator, since most AA weapons are AP4 and he's got a 3+ armor save still. What you should be worried about is pure weight of fire, and that's what Deredeo, Contemptor-Mortis and Onager Dunecrawlers bring to the table - throw enough Skyfire dice and he's going to fail his saves. FNP from the Stimulant Injectors helps, but I'm just not sure it's enough.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a super cool idea and I want him to work, but I just don't see it happening unless you play in a meta with very little flyers/AA and the opponent completely neglects to bring any tools with Skyfire. In that case, yes, it could be quite an interesting list and would make for a fun game.

I don't know if you even need the Buffmander since the Hunter Contingent kind of forces you (and strongly encourages you) to get the same effect from Markerlights. That said it's a hell of a lot simpler to just plop a ~150 point commander you have to take anyway and get the bonus for free.

The only WYSIWYG people know universally is imperial shit.

If you play a non imperial army, only other people who play your army or have experience modelling it will recognize your wargear, within reason. For example, a Tyranid bit is either a gun or a melee weapon, but good luck having a non-Tyranid player identify a non-Devourer gun bit.

For Tau it's teh same shit. Only Tau players can tell apart the double stack SMS or whatever and the regular single stack missile pod. Just put whatever is coolest on your model nobody will even be able to tell. Even Tau players themselves constantly confuse random decorative antenna bits with target locks and drone controller hubs.

FnP and Shield Gen, 2 Shield drones, every signature system aside from the CC node and Sensor suite and the stealthsuits have a homing beacon to call him down with pinpoint precision.

Commander Rambo is just doing what other units do, but for more points, less effectively, and at greater risk.

Huh, that may have come across as too harsh. Do what you want, man, it's all for fun, just don't expect it to be as amazing as you think. Point costs matter.

This is going to happen to you on any intricate model, it's not the Kheres fault directly. It does come warped and has some fiddly assembly steps though.

You might want to get a superglue with applicator if a regular bottle is giving you trouble. They also sell superglue that varies in viscosity, from runny like water/plastic glue to a thick gel, based on your needs.

He runs an Unbound List of nothing but Chapter Masters kitted out to the goddamn max, and gives them all these special rules and unique wargear, it's just insane. He has absolutely no filter, he throws a bitch fit if he loses (which is quite often, as he has no grasp of tactics) and just generally ruins the fun of anybody he has to play.

That said, the rest of the guys are pretty awesome. You just have to occasionally deal with guys like A.

That's a very fair point that I did not consider. I apologize. If you're just playing with what few models you have then it's one way to approach the game. Honestly, though, you should really just look at playing with lower point caps instead of bloating a unit to match a higher point cap without actually adding much to utility.

I tend to look at the game from a competitive mindset so taking minimal upgrades so that you can bring more units/guns is how I like to examine HQ wargear in general. On the plus side a LOT of the Tau wargear is ridiculous cheap compared to relics for other factions, so it's surprising how much shit you even can get away with taking and keep the point cost within the realm of something that isn't competing with a LoW in cost.

Depends. If you run the Angels' Fury Spearhead formation it could actually work okay. It's in white dwarf, three Stormravens come in on turn 2, rerolling reserves; if you take a Damocles Command Rhino to hold down the fort T1 and it doesn't blow up there's only a 1/36 chance it fails to make it on the board. The dread itself still can't charge anything until turn three, though, so it's still not without risk. Lots of things can blow up a Stormraven.

The biggest problem with BA dreads is just that they're completely mediocre now that vanilla SM dreads got their base attacks doubled. The specialist CC dreadnought chapter doesn't even have the best CC dreadnoughts anymore unless they do a rules update for the early 7th edition books that got shafted last year.

LoS blocking terrain is pretty vital for making the game fun in 7th edition. Even if you just put one big lump in the middle of the board and a bunch of area terrain everywhere else that gives armies the chance to maneuver and not get shot to shit by gunlines. I mean, shit, if you've already got lots of area terrain all you have to do to try it is just put a big cardboard box in the middle of the table and call it a building. If you like it then paint it up so it looks like one. One of the best parts about large LoS blocks is that they're super easy to DIY.

Exactly, and since Rhinos have the same side armour as front you can speed them sideways to offer for more cover for the guys behind.
I also occasionally try and troll my opponents by Flat Outing to get my rhinos in front of static fire support units like Broadsides.
If they glance it then the wreckage stays on the board fucking with their LoS and providing cover, unless they waste time moving round it for clear shots.

Well, at the very least you are brave.
Do be aware that the current 'dex is pretty awful and horrendously outdated. Still, a Juggerlord with Axe of Blind Rape is a fairly decent choice. Zhufor isn't half bad, either, though he cost like woah and needs a transport.
That said, I'd consider using the KDK instead of the CSM dex. You loose some options, but gain a number of superior special rules.

Round 1 was 7 Str 10 AP 2 attacks, hitting on 3s with rerolls. After that he lost 1A because no charge/counter attack bonus anymore. Smashfucker was vulnerable because he loses EW after he takes some wounds, at which point he gets instagibbed.

The first guy is renown for running cheesy armies (fliers under 1000 points because he knows no one will bring anti-air), being a huge rules lawyer when we run campaigns and events ("You said no ap2? Oh I know, he's not AP 2 he just doesn't allow armour saves against him!") and never goes easy on anyone with his cheese, not even children are safe. His second bad trait is that he doesn't paint, I don't mean he leaves them grey because what he does is that he just slaps paint all over them and generally doesn't give a shit his army looks awful. He buys most of his models off eBay and proxies old models for whatever is the hip new thing.

But, strangely, he's one of the nicest guys in the store, he doesn't care if you bring something cheesy against him or list tailor in advance. He takes his loses graciously and doesn't brag when he wins.

The other guy runs beautifully painted, fluffy armies. Each and every model has a back story and a name. He follows a strict wiz-ee-wig policy with his own army so every model has all their wargear on display.

But playing against him is an awful experience. When he starts losing he gets really confrontational if not outright bad tempered, challenging everything you do or say and forcing you to show him every line of every special rule in your codex, sighing LOUDLY every time something doesn't go his way or a model he liked died. When he starts winning he turns in to a smug cunt and starts bragging to everyone in the store how easily he's tabling you and how he feels bad for you and your 'army'.

Personally I prefer person 1 but many of the guys at my store say they prefer 2 because they can't stand his models and behaviour, what do you think /tg/?

Two target locks are all but required. Vectored Retro Thrusters aren't available to Ghostkeel, Riptide or Stormsurge.

Beyond that, you have a lot of options. Early Warning Override is never a bad choice - it's dirt cheap, and with all the crazy charge-out-of-reserves shit that marines have gotten lately it's as valuable as it ever was to put interceptor on everything you can.

Stimulant Injectors ARE expensive, but I'd argue they're worth it. +35 points a pop makes the formation cost considerably higher, but it'll keep them alive if you do get caught in melee where they can't rely on their countermeasures or cover saves.

Shield Generators sound like a good idea, but the new codex priced them at a whopping +50 points per model for large suits, and that's just too expensive. If +35 for FNP is questionable already, then a 4++ that's going to come into play almost never is entirely out of the question.

Velocity Tracker is a weird choice, but it might actually be very good in the context of the formation special rules. While they're only 24" range guns, they are S7 AP4 with six shots apiece - pretty good anti-flier stats. Then consider that they're at least BS4 because of the formation bonus, and likely BS5 if all three are still alive. They ignore cover, which means no jink saves. And the real kicker? Apart from stuff like Stormravens or Fire Raptors, most vehicle fliers are AV11 at best in the rear, and most are AV10. And you're always hitting them in the ass.

One of the best parts about running a Velocity Tracker is that with the Target Locks you can split fire them - if you want, you can even run only a single VT on the one model that didn't take a Target Lock and still have a slot left on every suit.

Most of the other stuff gets a bit questionable. As for shoulder guns I think I'd always take TL Fusion Blasters to take advantage of Wall of Mirrors. Never, ever take the Fusion Collider as your main weapon.

I used to play a dude like that in 5th. We're both CSm. He played Death Guard, I played Thousand Sons. He would sigh loudly and refuse to write an actual list. He'd refuse to counts-as or do anything non WYSIWYG and he'd also refuse to field anything that isn't fully painted and based. Decided to look at this again based on previous feedback given. Ditched the extra detachment altogether, removed the Stim Injectors from the Ghostkeels, and used the extra points to beef out the Stealth Suit units to the max (almost). Also, decided to make 1/3 in each Ghostkeel unit have Interceptor/Skyfire, while the other two have Target Locks. Comes out just under 1850. Also, I assume it's probably best to have the Stealth Suit Shas'Vre be a different model than one of the Fusion Blasters so you don't put all your eggs in one basket there... although he doesn't actually really do anything other than permit drones in the unit so it hardly matters.

Yes, but you'll want to use the fan-made Herald of Ruin rules if you want to have fun. Normal kill team games don't have enough restrictions or provisions for making it work well and it doesn't play that well. Heralds of Ruin is basically Mordheim with any 40k army and has some great campaign rules to boot.

Yeah, just had the same problem. I think there's something weird that the original anon who downloaded did to break the DRM (or just a weird DRM problem in general) and so it's only working with certain ebook readers. It's also worth noting that we got these early because of a mistake on Black Library's part with the store, so it's possible that the files they had in the repository are messed up or unfinished in some way.

For the regular ship commanders in the fleet they probably use the title of Admiral. Again, there's no rank requirement for this, since Space Marine Captains are usually more concerned with leading from the front, rather than on the bridge of a ship.

Raptors and warp talons aren't horribad, but the best CSM unit that is an actual marine and not a daemon trapped in a machine, is likely a lord with korlath. Seriously, that relic is nuts. +The ability to potentially pop him for a daemon prince + a thirster or TWO thirsters even means that even if he isn't killing things with the axe, he can become an essential strategic piece.

A codex update usually sometimes adds a bunch of new stuff and changes up a bunch of old. Take a look at any 5th edition codex and tell me you could summarize the changes to their 6th edition counterpart in two pages.

Fuck, it's not even about being competitive. Just look at Eldar, they got no new units as far as I know but changes to old ones (Hawks, Spiders, fucking WG/WK) were more than enough to justify a reprint.

The cyclic ion blaster is an autocannon. Autocannons are good at just doing damage and hoping stuff dies and destroying light tanks. If you fight lots of metal boxes, take a few of them.

Vehicle rules are kind of fucked at the moment and most vehicle-centric Imperium armies have a hard time. The one exception is the Space Marine Battle Company, but that's because you get all the transports for free. I wouldn't recommend that list to a beginner simply because you'd need so many damn models.

Tau is really beginner friendly with the new codex. Just get lots of giant robots and go to town. A commander, a few units of crisis suits, some broadsides and a riptide are a solid foundation for an army, especially since you can take them in a formation now. If you wanna try to start with kill team rules just get a crisis suit box and go from there.

As a tau player, you must kill what you shoot at, otherwise they will shoot/charge you.
The best way to kill stuff, is to ensure they get no save.
So you use plasma on things like tactical terminators, MC and other stuff with a bad invul
However, if your fighting something with say storm shields, then unload normal firewarrior shots on them. Eventually they'll roll some 1's
Also be mobile with your tau, don't sit in a corner that's what guard do. Instead press forward and use your better rapid fire range and jump-shoot-jump stuff. If you stay in the corner, one unit multi-charging ruins your day.

The only reason that statement doesn't sound ridiculous is because the other option are bloodcrushers.

Compared to terminators they are utter shit. There aren't a lot of units you can say that with. They cost just as much, have just as many attacks, a worse save, and have to roll on a shitty table in order to get the shittest power weapon.

lol, you know it's not intended Anon. The whole point of the relic rule is that the champion turns into the daemon, so obviously should retain relics, the whole point of the Thirster Axe is that there is a specific bloodthrister trapped inside who get's released.

My point wasn't that it's OP anyway, it's that - stating that a clear rules fuck up is one of the armies best tactical assets just shows how shit an army it is.

I don't get how someone can be so deluded.

6 points a model for a cultist w/ T3 and 5+ FnP is shit. You can't even take more than 2 fucking squads of cultists in the decurion.

No one uses multiple standard tac squads unless it's a battle demi-company in which case you'll probably lose because you can't do shit vs armour.

How is spending 7 accumulated turns/characters slain in challenges/units killed to get a daemon prince and a thirster not possible within the scope of RAI? It's clearly a sacrifice mechanic in a codex that's most prominent relic is based around KILLING the user. The entire gimmick is that your opponent is not necessarily rewarded for killing your characters and units in completion.

The only viable CSM units are heldrakes, poverty cultists, and oh look, daemons. All of whom are better in their own codex anyway.

Scenery doesn't effect your units outside of cover/ tactics. There are however bases like the imperials get that have multiple trenches, towers, gunports, etc. That have bonuses for the defenders.

would you prefer to play on a table with nothing on it? that would be rather boring. not to mention that you're gonna get blown away at range where as with terrain and buildings blocking line of sight you'll need to move around the table

10 points for a power sword with WS5 and 5++ reroll blows every other assault troop in the game out of the water. Native BS 5 also means they run fortifications like no other codex can so easily. If that wasn't enough, they happen to be one of the single most spammable units by virtue that malefic let's you shit them out multiple times a turn and KDK let's you summon them repeatedly should you choose to. No other codex is letting you get an AP3 troop at 10 points. Next you'll be calling etherblades over-priced

The amount of terrain used is one of the most important parts of setting up the game correctly. There's generally two different ways to look at terrain - there's types of "area terrain" covered in the rulebook that have different rules and give different cover saves depending on what they are. Ruins are the most common thing used, but there's also craters, forests, trenches, fuel pipes, etc. Any (non vehicle) model with their base at least partially inside that piece of terrain gets the benefit. This is a bit goofy for large monstrous creature and gargantuan creatures that technically get cover saves just for touching a bit of terrain; this is referred to as "toe-in-cover" by the community generally.

You can also (and should) use large line-of-sight blocking terrain pieces like buildings, silos, towers, etc. that units can hide behind. 40k uses true light-of-sight, which means that if my model can't draw a line to your model I can't shoot you. Some artillery weapons are an exception to this, but for the most part, if you can't see someone you can't shoot them, and using cover to advance across the table without taking massive casualties is an important part of the game. Moving up and down buildings to get on top of them also costs extra movement (unless you have a jump-pack/jetpack/wings), so they can affect movement in that way as well.

So, yes, scenery/terrain plays a huge role in 40k. The problem is that most people don't play with enough of it.

trees and rubble are just for cover, but some buildings and fortifications give bonuses to units using them. these useful fortifications are part of your army though rather than just scenery, though.

So I notice in the War Zone Damocles it mentions a Tau scoutship took readings of the anomaly that accompanies an Imperial ship when it exits from Warp Space.

It also says they went to take those findings back to Tau space but they never made it.

Thinking of getting into 40k. Planning to buy a few recasts and then do some of my own moulding/casting based on that for infinity army because I'm cheap and like crafting things. Goal 1 is an army of assassins because that's really cheap but probably not actually useful in the slightest. What else fields a low number of high point models, but ones that aren't too physically big (ex knights, vehicles, etc)? Just looking at the GW website and sisters seem ok but I might be guessing wrong.

Depends on the army, but you can buy a battalion pack for <£100 for most armies that should start you off. Buying the essentials like paints, glues and shit will probably just like an extra £40 more on average.

If you've got a decent salary and aren't a NEET the prices aren't that bad. The games are a lot of fun and modelling is incredibly fulfilling.
