>>43283314I believe more homebrew or non-standards are needed. Though it is agreed that a happy medium is needed since magical realms suck.
Once I created a whole world, but the other races were truly alien. They could never be played by players because they were truly "other".
But even though they could not play them, they had a hell of a fun time learning about them and how to manipulate or kill them. But it made them more like monsters, thus it robbed the fun of exploration.
People are always going to want quirky animals races since they're easier to understand and to explain to players. I personally dislike the overly animal peoples (Fantastic Mr. Fox or generic furry porn), since they offer nothing new.
When I make a race that has to be "familiar", I usually use chimerical beasts that takes traits (salamander/wolf/bats, but blended into one smooth entity) as opposed to full one obvious creature so it's something the player has to actually learn or can read up if they want to play one.
My current world has the chimera types, kill bugs, and death birds. The players still usually pick humans so they can be the detective in figuring out the "other" or enjoy the tourism of exploring foreign species' cultures instead of killing the shit out of them.
So, (OP) and tldr;s, a homebrew or nonstandard can be awesome but in the wrong hands, it'll just be fursona fapbait or some bullshit. It all relies on the creator.
