alright, if you were to suggest one RPG, the most basic, stripped down one available that I could present to my roomates (all of whom have never played any TTRPGs) and have them nearly immediately pick up and be able to play, what would you suggest? Setting/Theme doesn't matter.

some people have said 5e, others said Searchers of the Unknown, which so far seems like my best bet.

Dungeon world is THE easiest shit to pick up, super simple and very rules light. It's a flawed game for many reasons, but your roommates almost certainly won't be in deep enough to notice or care.

FATE, my dude. Incredibly simple, a variety of setting-specific things to choose from, and really easy to modify to do most anything you want, all in a rules-light package.

There are some one-page RPGs floating around that you can use to introduce them, like Lasers & Feelings, the aforementioned All Outta Bubblegum, Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf, things like that, if you don't want to use a system with a full rulebook.

I haven't played MAID, so I can't recommend for or against it.

FATE is super narrative, and the players can all affect the story. It's all liberal application of your traits.

Fudge is similar.

Everyone is John is a fun one-shot.

This. But with Fate Accelerated Edition. The complete Fate Core is too convoluted and requires two or three readings of the book to learn. FAE is the way to go here.

I'd also recommend 1981 D&D B/X (the edition written by Moldvay). The basic manual is only 68 pages long and rather nice imo.

It encourages the right introduction to tabletop gaming, where they are forced to give a shot about the roles. Just pick one close to their interests.

Playing a game close to their interests will hold them the longest, otherwise you might as well do Everyone Love John.

If they want to play "D&D" play the starter set adventure for 5e. Use pregen characters.

Don't fucking recommend FATE or DW or AW or any of the freeform stuff to beginners. Just because it's rules-light does not mean it's simple and easy to understand.

Risus is for beginners. Simple d6. Or one-shots like Everyone is John or 3:16 Carnage Among the Stars.

Savage Worlds is a good choice to begin with, if you yourself have a little experience. Does any setting you like, basic mechanic is "roll two dice, if one of them comes up a 4+ you did the thing", combat is great fun

If you want something a bit more storytimey then go for Fate Accelerated. But I'd happily recommend Savage Worlds.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2e. You can roll the whole character generation, and rules are super simple and intuitive.
Rules are easily applied to any basic fantasy/mundane setting.

Best thing about it tho is that the combat feels gritty and intense.

Another gem is the possibility to play a dung collector.
