You're oversimplifying and deliberately misrepresenting what you're talking about in an attempt to make it absurd.

Look around your room, it makes sense right? It all conforms to your expectations and understanding. 'Weird geometry' shatters that worldview, your room is now fucked up, it's wrong, it shouldn't exist that way and you cannot understand why it does now.

You can say "Oh, well I just don't understand it, that's fine, I can ignore it as something I don't get." it's not that easy, humans don't work nice and tidily like that. Conflict, bombings etc all can cause horrible mental trauma and for the most part we understand those. Now replace that with an actual inability to comprehend what's happening in front of you, space doesn't work this way, it feels unnatural, wrong and you're not a high enough being to actually work wit the information in front of you.

I'm sure someone else can do a better job of explaining it than me.

An acid trip. You see sounds, taste colors, experience brand new feelings that are impossible to describe, lose sense of timing, see objects that don't make sense geometrically, and feel as if the universe itself is a sticky web. It's an acid trip inducing object, that in the eyes of those who have not experienced a trip, would be entirely disorienting and frightening. But eventually, you'd get used to the sensation of the room. The acid trip is disorienting, but eventually you get used to it after repeated usage. The brain adapts. Same idea with your traumas, people eventually adapt to it.

The idea of X causing insanity doesn't make sense because insanity is a gradual state of being. And the idea of anything in the cthulhu mythos making you insane is quite frankly superficial. The characters aren't going insane, they're going sane, trying to comprehend their place in the universe.

Sudden death via 'things man cannot compreheeeennnnd' doesn't fucking matter or change anything about our daily life, because it's already our daily life. People that would reallygo insane from realizing that humanity is a meaningless ant/concept in the long run must surely have weak as fuck egos and self esteem if that's enough to completely break them. Or they're from the child-25 year old age range.

It might have been horrifying for Lovecraft and other people back then. I can accept that. But the news of being unimportant space dust specs is old as the dirt we walk on. It's played for cheap 'woahs' in the MiB movies for fucks sake.

You wouldn't be able to walk down the street without taking a second glance into every alley, just to ensure a Yith or Shoggoth had not slid on through.

In Lovecraft's original works, it was sort of the other way around. The thought of existing at the whim of an angry god is nothing new to humans. That's what gods are FOR, really. Lovecraft's monsters are terrifying because they're closer to space rocks than people in that they really don't care about humanity one way or the other.

That doesn't seem too scary today, but the stories were written before space travel. Everyone could see the stars, of course, and probably knew that they were very large and very far away, but they didn't have any real frame of reference.

The thought of Earth as just another rock sharing a vast and hostile space with countless other rocks was seriously scary to Lovecraft, and he was pretty good at communicating his fear. He was also afraid of zombies and black people. That doesn't mean there's anything INHERENTLY sanity-destroying about them.

It always feels like these people have never read lovecraft. The things that make people insane in his stories were almost never the weird geometries and the like. They were seeing people getting killed and eaten, discovering they themselves are not entirely human and being confronted with what that means for their worldview, witnessing depraved dark magics, or being chased by something so seemingly impossible to evade and describe that it will forever haunt their dreams. Things that stick with a person, not the nothings your brain will naturally file under "stuff I don't understand".

That's not its purpose at all. The reason the sanity score came to be at all was because player's started playing their characters as if they were scared even if the players themselves weren't when they risked losing sanity by looking at monsters.

It does not make sense, though, and has no basis in what Lovecraft actually wrote.

This is also untrue. Most of Lovecraft's monsters are very much mortal, they're just different. It's just that the protagonists that Lovecraft wrote about were mostly self-inserts and were thus weak and cowardly nerds who didn't dare to go up against the monsters they met.

Most of them don't. The problem is Derleth who really did think the stories were about people going insane from seeing stuff that SHOULDN'T BEEEE, and also Sandy Petersen who very clearly interprets Lovecraft in an almost identical fashion.

Lovecraft used Non-Euclidean twice in his stories from what I can find.

Once, in Dreams in the Witch House. Where Walter Gilman studied non-euclidean calculus and quantum physics. His background in such matters, combined with his interests in the occult, so that he tried to figure out the mathematical principles behind the works of the eponymous witch.

The second time is even more mundane. R'lyeh is constructed using non-euclidean architecture. Which is weird when you're used to buildings with right angles. Where it's more like walking along a coral than a street.

Many of them have even read the Necronomicon and haven't gone insane from it, even if they think some of the things in it were a little disturbing as you might expect someone would react to reading a book written by a serial killer or otherwise seriously disturbed individual.

The times that people do go insane it's because they have witnessed people die in front of them or narrowly escaped with their life intact from horrific monsters. They are mentally scarred. They don't go

And you'll notice that DURING the cold war, people were fucking scared as shit.

Plus, Commies aren't nearly as scary, because you understand what they are. They're human, like you. They breath, like you. They bleed, like you. They die, like you. You can fight them, you can WIN against them. Their nuclear stockpiles are terrifying, but that terror is tempered by the fact that you've got your OWN nuclear stockpile that's just as good. You know it's not You versus Them, but US versus Them. You're on a team, part of a whole, you've got backup and people who know what's going on. You're worried you are that they'll launch WW3 because you understand what WW3 would be like, and it's really bad. You know what to expect, and understand the enemy enough that you can guess what they're going to do. You know that if the shit hits the fan, it's still possible to survive and even fight back, even if it's unlikely, Everyone is happy to believe that HIS basement bunker is built sturdy enough to take it.
This is a simple fear, grounded in what is KNOWN.

Meanwhile, if you're thrust into Mythos shit, you have none of that. You don't know what the fuck is going on, who or what anything is, why it's happening, WHAT is happening, where any of it came from or where it's going to. All you know is that suddenly your long-held expectations are coming up wrong, things aren't happening like they used to and you don't know why. You can't control what's going on. You can't understand HOW you could control what's going on, even if you had the power to. You don't know what to expect or how to fight back. You are alone. You don't have anyone to back you up, no leader who understands what's happening, no one to turn to who can help you make sense of it all. All you know is that what you thought you knew was wrong.
This is a fear grounded in what is UNKNOWN.

This is true for nearly all of Lovecraft's monsters, with the possible exception of some of the really otherworldy beings like Yog-Soggoth, Nyarlathotep and Azathotrh which seem to be more like personficiations of metaphysical principles than actual creatures. Several characters throughout the stories also do decide to fight back, and when they do they are far from completely helpless.

Creatures are shot and they die, some humongous thing hiding below the basement of a house is supposedly killed by pouring acid on it, and in The Shadow over Innsmouth the government bombs the Devil's Reef.

The man committed suicide. Because in the end what he'd experienced ate away at his normal peaceful ordinary life. Just like many other people with PSTD.

Another thing to remember is that Cthulhu didn't die - he didn't lose. He merely woke up for a while and returned to sleep. A hiccup in his eternal slumber, the stars almost being right, but not quite yet. And that mere momentary wakefulness drove anyone who had even the slightest sensitivity or artistic inclination to madness, night terrors, and about a third of them to suicide.

Note that most people on /tg/ are pretty intelligent, intuitive, and imaginative people. Chances are pretty good you'll not be one of the lucky ones.

That's what I'm saying. I don't know how developed psychiatry was back in Lovecraft's day, but looking at it now (or in Lovecraftian role-playing games, etc.) what do the victims end up with? Psychosis? Schizophrenia? Or is it just generic fantasy insanity that isn't explained (or doesn't need to be)?

That's a 'chickens and eggs thing'. Does a video game/book/movie drive people nuts or are they already nuts. Lovecraft has undoubtedly acted as a trigger.... but there again so has the colour yellow and rain.

Generally speaking it depends. PTSD is the most common one and is almsot invariably combined with depression and melancholia, but several develop intense body dysmorphia conditions; night terrors/sleep paralysis/insomnia is another common set. Paranoid schizophrenia is by far the most disruptive and damaging one and that one is common, and also misdiagnosed (the paranoia is real, but they're not schizophrenic - they really DID experience horrifying inexplicable shit!). Monomania is a disorder that a lot of his adventurers suffer - they HAVE to follow the clues, they HAVE to know more, they MUST find the explanation.

Euclid only concerned himself with objects made of polygons. If you draw a triangle on the surface of a sphere, of course it adds up to more than 180 degrees, nothing mind-breaking about that.
The alien architecture in Lovecraft stories is disorienting because it's "curved" in a direction that humans can't perceive. Just calling something non-Euclidean doesn't necessarily mean that.

The same way that a circle drawn on paper isn't actually a circle, but a SYMBOL of a circle, composed of pigments scattered in 3-space, representing an ideal mathematical circle.

We can mathematically represent non-euclidean spaces pretty easy, (and I don't think they've actually proven that ours isn't one,) but there aren't any physical examples of them that you can actually sense.

I'm not sure where all the non-euclidean stuff came from, think someone early on wasn't careful with their language, and then someone else brought out the the out of context quotes. At the very least, the OP webm is merely 9D hypertorus intersecting with 3d space, all euclidean.

Our space(time) is locally curved, because of gravity. On the large scale, it's flat as far as we can tell.

The surface of a physical sphere isn't really a space, I don't think. It's just a collection of points in 3-space, that can be used to illustrate a space.

The surface of a sphere is a space in it's own right, it's an elliptic curved 2d space, or I guess a curved plane. You might argue that a plane isn't a space, but then you should just assign arbitrary names to 4d, 5d, and 6d spaces and so on.

Essentially, and N dimensional space, can be embedded within a N+1 dimensional space. It doesn't have to be, but there's no problem if it is. There's also no problem, that I'm aware of, of embedding a curved N dimensional space into a flat N+1 dimensional space.

Well north/south travel across the surface of a sphere or spheroid like the earth can only be maneuvered around via non-euclidean geometry due to how any two parralel lines will inevitably intersect at some finite point.
