Also more progression is fun, having a base is great in many ways, psychologically.
In play, it can bind the party to a specific area, which might not be great depending on what sort of game is being run. But there's ways to have mobile bases (Ships are great for this).
Ideally the players will try and establish their own base themselves, but just giving the players a "haunted house" can be great too. They can take it or leave it afterwards if they want to be a travelling group instead.
