Can someone explain to me the Warhammer universe.

Whats the difference between the warhammer universe in 40k compared to like that game in Vermintide or Warhammer Total War coming?

Can anyone explain?

the two universes aren't connected they just share some concepts. the fantasy universe came first (and is the one represented in the total war game), then they decided to make a sci-fi spin-off, which is 40k.

Okay there is the sci-fi setting 40k and the fantasy setting that was warhammer fantasy battle.

They are separate but tenuously and often jokingly linked due to similar concepts existing between them.

Fantasy was a planet with nations and factions but RECENTLY got shitsmashed in an apocalypse event called The End Times (where the game Vermintide takes place)

The Total War game seems to take place in the standard Old World with same old factions as always doing their thing.

Meanwhile 40k takes place in the distant future where the factions are separate races vying for control of the Milky Way or seeking to annihilate one another.

Any more questions?

Warhammer 40k is space fantasy, Warhammer Fantasy Battles is a discontinued game/setting in traditional medieval fantasy. Warhammer: Total War and Vermintide take place in the old Warhammer FB. Stuff like Space Hulk and Dawn of War take place in Warhammer 40k.

It might be easier for you to absorb if you initially think of warhammer/wh40k as warcraft/starcraft until you find out the differences.
There's cognates for everything plus a shit ton more.

The irony of GW loaning out the now devalued license like candy means that there are now a number of games set in Warhammer Fantasy coming out, Warhammer End Times: Vermintide among them.

I say irony because it's probably going to result in a few new fans who are going to be disappointed to discover that the setting was literally JUST erased and replaced with blander 40k-lite market-trash.

More like two different tech settings. They have similar concepts and notions but aren't linked directly. The warhammer fantasy world is it's own planet.

Whereas 40k is implied to be the far future from our own timeline, with Earth now being called Terra and dominated by the human Imperium.

Thats kinda sucks then.

It's makes sense if they were somehow connected.

But two separate timelines are essentially two different universes, which is just confusing.

Not really, no. They arn't properly within one another's history... the relation between them are all primarily in-jokes and 'clever' references mostly restricted to warp/chaos shennanigans.

Really it frees the two to diverge a bit tone-wise. 40k used to be the goofy over the top 80s space brother to fantasy. But now focuses on edgy grimdarkness despite being weirder than ever.

Allows some flex between the two.

The most connection you can make between them is Old world fantasy existed in one dimension while 40k existed in a different dimension.
The warp (realm of daemons) however is an inter-dimensional space that connects to all different realities and parallel dimensions which allows for some cross over.

However chaos completely consumed the old world fantasy during the end times destroying nearly everything and the universe was recreated.
The new universe has different realms focused on some aspect such as light, or fire and various survivor factions have begun taking over realms.
From what I can tell these different realms are the old warp being split up and remade into something new meaning that Age of Sigmar wouldn't easily cross over with 40k.

Now you see why GW is killing the setting... well one the reasons.

Basicly, their joke setting (yes, 40k IS literally just a joke that got too popular) overtook their serious setting and has been far more popular for the past decade.

Combine this with Game Workshop's seeming inability to sell ice in hell at the best of times they decided it was easier to just scrap the serious setting and all of it's history, setting and lore replace it with something closer to 40k (complete with GIANT GOLDEN GROUND MARINES)... but not 40k... you know just to make things even MORE confusing and alienate any remnant fanbase.

There is no true consensus on this because GAMES WORKSHOP intentionally leaves their settings vague.

Altough generally speaking the Warhammer Fantasy setting while using the similar concepts of the Chaos Gods, Orcs etc,should be separate from the 40k setting as their connection was never pinned down exactly. Despite that in the past there were even some 40k models and artwork in the fantasy material. But these have been removed long ago and could have been merely easter eggs and bait. Similarly and effort has been made by GW to move 40k away from the "same fantasy tropes IN SPACE" image, they removed the space dwarves (squats), space skaven (hrud), space lizardmen (slann) etc.from the main 40k setting. Only the eldar and orks remain (you can count necrons as "space undead" if you want.)

Now Age of Sigmar on the other hand is the canonical continuation of the Warhammer Fantasy setting where the Apocalypse finally happened and the planet was destroyed but some of their inhabitants somehow survived on the pieces of the planet that are floating in "MAGICAL SPACE" creating a new setting for a new game.

One thing it may be worth noting is that the WHFB world is vaguely inspired by mythic earth. If you look at the map, it looks like really old maps of the world, with the elf island being approximately where atlantis was said to be, and the germanic-inspired empire in central europe, etc.
