REPUTATION

Players have a default reputation equal to their character level plus their most "relevant" ability score. A level 20 sorcerer with 18 Charisma and 20 Constitution has a reputation of 24, unless there's good reason for that sorcerer to be better known for being a diehard than for actually casting spells.

An NPC can make an Intelligence roll to recognize or have heard of a PC. The DC for this roll is 30 minus the PC'S reputation. It's DC 6 to recognize our sorcerer friend from above, unless he's infamous as a glutton for punishment, where it's DC 5. It's DC 26 to recognize a level 1 PC with 16 in a stat, so someone who can identify a 1-HD nobody must have a serious information network.

A fighter who is recognized may find it easier to hire mercenaries to serve him, a wizard could get extended a bigger line of credit to craft a magic item, a cleric could be offered a donation for casting hallow on local areas, a rogue might not be recognized directly, but if he meets a fellow member of the Honest Trade, that other member will know that certain leads won't be wasted on him.

Is there a way to multiclass into your own class? Like, could you delay your PDK progression to get the Battlemaster's starting Maneuvers & Superiority dice at 7, then get the level 7 PDK stuff at 10, and so on?

Anyone have experience starting Princes of the Apocalypse at level one? I'm DMing for a group of players that have never touched a tabletop game before. I've run Lost Mines of Phandelver with another group and found it to be pretty great for new players, but I'd like to try PotA.

I usually build around an idea, but I freely admit that I always at least consider DPS.

One of our members is running a one-shot that's become a two session deal. He's never DM'd before, and wanted to try it.

In an attempt to buff things up to make them more exciting because we rolled through some monsters at the beginning, he's just across the board increased stats on monsters regardless of their CRs....

I only have one example, because I recently used cockatrices in our campaign, but he essentially increased stats to:

>HP 40
>Don't remember strength, but he was beating me in grapples while I have a +11 mod
>DC 13 save to petrify
etc.

We're in a tower with 6 rooms, we've cleared 2, and they only get harder. For some reason, all healing spells are fizzling (but not burning the spell slot), and nothing can be cast as a ritual; they fizzle too.

How screwed are we, and what tactics can we use to NOT get run over by creatures.

All level 5:
>Human Barbarian 4/Rog 1 (no armor, grappling focused)

My half-orc cleric is based on keeping Bless up on the party as long as possible, and other tricks to increase allies' DPR without much concern for his own. If the party needs him to pitch in, he can use Divine Light or even Guiding Bolt.

Is it really that much better? I'm looking at the Adventurer's League PDF for PotA, and it is pretty much the same stuff as outlined in chapter 6 of the actual PotA book. Starts the party in Red Larch, gives them some hooks to short adventures, seems pretty good to me. These guys are all into RPGs so I like the more sandbox style that PotA has for the group

I'm the group's foreverDM, but recently one of my players took a shine to running a campaign, and I rolled up a Tiefling Life Cleric. His DPR is abysmal, and I play him primarily as a tank to soak damage, hang around in the front row, heal people, and occasionally get opportunity attacks off with his spear. I occasionally surprise the group by blowing a spell slot on inflict wounds, but generally damage isn't my main role - Fighting Defensively with ~19 AC is just so damn GOOD that I'd rather wade into monsters and do that than try to hit them with damage.

I've got a life domain cleric in one of my games that is focused solely on healing--by his choice, for that matter.

...it doesn't help, however, that he's never managed to hit anything ever with anything, including spells. His dice hate him with a passion I've never before experienced. In fifteen levels, he has hit someone with something a grand total of once.

Spells are working, just not any heals, or divination. My assumption is that either he has something specific planned, and just doesn't want us ruining his story, or it's a school of magic-keyed anti-magic field over? I dunno. It's his first time, so we're kinda just letting it run with scratched heads.

For his first time, he's actually very good at roleplaying, and improvising....just a bit railroadey. For example, every NPC / shopkeep we've talked to is essentially a very high level PC.

They all try. The only question is whether they're good at it or not. If they are good, then they're called minmaxers. If they're shit at pumping their damage and pick trap options, they're roleplayers.

Because the whole system is built around fighting as a constant fact of life. It's all but guaranteed to come up every session, and enough of it can solve pretty much any problem short of DM fiat. Anything other than fighting gets at best a few paragraphs of rules-text, and is still vague enough that constant houseruling is required. Trying to play a D&D game that isn't about fighting is like trying to eat dinner while using a zweihander as your only utensil; you're better off just putting it down and doing without.

I tried this, was planning on going Mastermind Rogue and everything. I got wrecked in the 3rd round of combat during the first session with a new DM. So now I'm going for survive funsies with an EK and Warcaster/Polearm Master Shenanigans. Not the best DPS but enough flavor and "good enough" dps to enjoy myself.

Mind you I've been attacked all of 3 times and all 3 they were crits, but at least I didn't die with my second character. Otherwise... well frankly then I would have just been out to break the game if I thought it was some form of passive-aggressive malice.

DPS is honestly not even close to all that matters in 5e combat. Mobility, survivability, and the ability to pass saving throws can all be very important to survival. The most common causes of failure in my parties is lack of sufficient HP to survive burst damage, and inability to pass saves against shit like paralysis.

We are already a few sessions in and wandered around quite a bit. Buying a map is an option according to the book and they can still get lost.

My question is if the map shows too much, like for example Neverlight Grove which is said to be very hard to find.

That map doesn't spoil too much, just general locations of things.

It depends a lot on the group, honestly. I'd suggest you don't give them a map, but I'd also say that you should go with your gut. If your group is the sort to explore and get sidetracked, it could still be a lot of fun even with a map.

Bonus points if they get a map and just a /few/ bits and pieces of it are flat-out wrong.

Well, im DMing it smart and having them go from chapter to chapter in order. Theres pletny of breadcrumbs to make that easy enough. They saved the kuotoa pacifist NPC and stool the myconid sprout when they escaped, and the kuotoa lead them to the fish city (chapter 2), then they saved the duergar that was going to be sacrified who lead them to graklstugh (chapter 3) then stool who is still with them is leading them to neverlight grove (chapter 4). If youre not doing it this way then youre going to have a shitty time because the book is not organized at all in any way and its going to be confusing as fuck to DM

I just dont see the point. There will always be breadcrumbs to lead them to the next chapter and the inbetween areas have good fleshed out random rolls. So why? It seems like all it would do is break the railroad and make it hard as fuck to DM. Nothing about "prebuilt campaign" says "hey lets break the railroad". You rail road the fuck out of them and they will fucking like it, god damnit. Give them a map thats just a blank piece of paper with the next chapter's city name on it and a arrow pointing to it.

A map is just really nice for visualization. Also the players will escape the underdark pretty soon anyway, and then they would want to aquire a map on the surface

yeah, the idea is to just eb+quick eb (or quick whatever spell you need, maybe hex?) every turn.
it's better damage than what casters usually do without wasting spells, but a sorclock can't support a party (no bless, no heals) unless he jumps thru even more hoops.

Why would you ever use acid, alchemist's fire, ball bearings, etc.?

They waste an action (not to mention money). Even at low levels, you can just hit something with a sword or a cantrip (at least there you're getting your proficiency bonus).

As for alchemist's fire, repeating fire damage ain't bad.

The acid I'd only use at low level. 2d6 is going to be better than a lot of things you can do at level 1 and 2.

I forget how class levels equate to CR, but for example the "Mage" NPC is a 9th-level spellcaster but only CR 6.

3-5 level 5s can probably take on a level 7 warlock without much trouble. For every one of his turns, the party is getting 3-5. And it only takes one failed save to end a concentration spell like Fly.

Any casters can pick up CON Save Prof or War Caster right out of the gate for concentration checks. Half-Elf CHA Casters probably benefit the most, as the extra feat is the only thing that keeps Humans competitive with them for those classes.

Starting my first ever campaign that's not 90% people I'm already friends with in a few days, managed to come in as a player.

That's a good idea.

Even if they're not strong enemies, just having extra targets and distractions around really changes the pace of battle in 5E. Even a weak mook gets an action, is a target, can disrupt concentration spells, and means ranged attacks have disadvantage if they're within five feet of the attacker.

Four cult fanatics sounds good. Maybe two are blasting spells while the other two run in with their daggers, just to balance things out.

Ive played lore/life combo a bunch of times. Whats your starting level? I can help. Progression looks like this:

helf elf for the skill profs
Criminal background for the thieves tool prof
Max CHA, get 14 dex. Rest in CON. 8 str.

Levels 1-5 Bard.
Level 6 Life domain cleric, get medium armor + shield.
Rest of levels into bard.

Use vicious mockery every turn on the hardest hitting enemy who uses attack rolls. Bonus points if it has one big attack instead of a multiattack.

Use dissonant whispers if you have 2 or more martial characters in melee range of the enemy.

You get to use your jack of all trades on initiative checks and counterspell checks

Use cutting words strategically to ensure en enemy misses. This changes a lot depending on if your DM lets you see their roll or not. If they do, try to use it when they just barely hit to ensure even if you roll low it will still force a miss. If your DM doesnt let you see the rolls maybe watch their reaction to see if they roll high or not, or just use it on the hardest hitting enemy.

Once you get magical secrets, steal counterspell and aura of vitality. Aura of vitality is broken as FUCK as a lore+life.

Please note: Your DM will hate you for playing this character. it breaks the game in a lot of annoying ways.

Ended up creating a Paladin as an emergency to fill in for game [Long story moving on] and all thats in the group today is our dipshit Moon Druid with high physical stats that took Durable and Weapon master as his feats. We end up taking on a group of Salamanders with a couple NPC Fighters straight out of the MM. Now I got Polearm master GWM and Sentinel because I know full well I gotta do everything myself damagwise but even that is hard to pull of because the Salamders stealth thn hit and run the Druid take forever to think of what he could do [Durr maybe cast moonbeam no wait what you say turn to bird and cut escap route off I dunno....]. I do fine up until the point I get grappled by a tail taking away Power attack as a good option leaving me vulnerable to more damage and forced to use my action just to get back to normal where I might just be grappled again on his next action. Only barely survived my first fight at lv9 due to one nice feature and a party that didnt have the tactical sense or ability to get around any of it

Also discuss how dissonant whispers make the enemy CHOOSE to run away, meaning its not forced movement, meaning everyone in melee when they run gets a opportunity attack.

Unless you never prepared spells every even if your spellbook was taken away you would have had some prepared. Seems like your DM is being pointlessly harsh. Your party not getting back your equipment doubly fucked you. I'd have a word with the GM about having spells prepared and if it doesnt work out see if you can change your character. Because being a Wizard with no spells, for quite some time as replacing them is not cheap and you gonna be broke for a good bit in OotA is going to suck.

As other posters have said, it would be nice to give you some leeway in copying your old spells if you find a blank spellbook.

I think this would make an exciting quest on its own though. Earning a spellbook and the money required to add spells to it. Maybe some spell scroll is at the end of a dungeon, or a weird denizen of the Underdark will give it to you but you owe him a favour.

Man, that's just fun. It's why I like wizards and their whole spellbook thing.

So how do i multiclass monk into fighter?

Also looking for homebrew ideas for the different monk traditions.

Example:
Long Death monks get to add poison or necrotic damage to their attacks at lvl3 and it scales with their {(unarmed damage dice)+(monk level)}/2.

Sun monks get their lvl 17 (or was it 18?) ribbon as part of the lvl 11 feat.
They also get ''Celstial ascension art'' as a feat and it gives them a +3 to the Con modifier instead as the lvl 17(18?) feature + flight at will (on self).

Shadow monks get double proficiency for all piercing weapons under the monk weapon category at lvl 6.

Wot4E are split into the 4 elements like separate traditions but they may choose lower level features from a different element.

Wind monks get:

Misty step and Wind blade (re-fluffed fireball just ari elemental - deals cutting damage) as cantrip at lvl 3.

Longswords and whips as monk weapons at lvl 6.

Flight at will at lvl 11.

''Sound breaker art'' as lvl 18 feat.
Grants immunity to sound based attacks (get rekd bards).
Silence at will.
Each attack action gains a sound component that counts as a mental attack.
Targets use their Wis mod + dc against half the Monk PC lvl/2 + Wis mod or are knocked prone, confused etc. (roll die for the effect)

Water monks get:

Create water, Controll water and Freezing strike as cantrips (Hold person with ice damage).

At lvl 6 they gain proficiency with sabres and whips as monk weapons.

At lvl 11 they get ice resist + boosted swimming speed + lay on hands for 2 ki points (Half monk lvl + Wis mod for hp healed).

At lvl 18 they get the ''Eternal sea feat''.
The amount of their total ki points is raised by 10 points.

Earth monks get:

Shape earth, Earthsense (just look up the druid spells), Rock bullet (Fire-ball rock flavour blunt or piercing damage).

At lvl 6 they gain proficiency with all pole-arms as if they were monk weapons.

From lvl 11 their Str is raised by 1 point every 2 levels. So at lvl 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19.

RAW doesn't give that as an example, but as a DM I would allow it. However, there would be a question of space for the spells needed. Spells take up several pages if I remember correctly, you got to have a certain amount of surface space to work with.

It really disappoints me when my players or the other PCs mistake my dumb gimmick builds as min/maxing.
Finding a clever interaction between two abilities isn't min/maxing when it's still mathematically suboptimal.

What do you mean? How do you?

If I were your DM I'd probably require you to travel to some monk temple to learn the forgotten art of whatevvah that just so happens to be the fighter class.

That if you are trying to use the fighter class to augment your monk abilities or make a cohesive whole. If your dropping the monk in favor of fighter because you think monk sucks then I would do something else.

The shitty DM is the one who starts the rules-lawyering. They impose goofy limits on what can and can't be physically done based on statistics and rolls and their precious charts, sometimes mixed with "realism". And when you finally compile enough of their rulings to point out the inconsistencies or build a framework of rules based on their past decisions, the moment you demonstrate that X is possible using their own system, they'll handwave it away.

I rarely allow multiclassing to begin with. And yes, if there was a large jump I might have them do something.

In this case the party, I presume, goes to far off temple place and hangs out. Next session I have a few 'day in the life of a training monk' encounters for the monk guy followed by one large test encounter - that all covers the month or three he was there. The party (going back and forth) gets a couple of 'day in the life of visiting a distant monastery' encounters. In the end the party has a chance to make some contacts. Big capstone encounter for everyone at the end.

Yeah, I make a fucking adventure out of it. That is what I do as DM. Now instead of 'hand wave, get powerful dude, look at how minmax you are now' bullshit, the player has some history. He has contacts, now he has an NPC contact/master. Maybe the party has a new lead on a new quest. Bandits coming to the monastery and shit (fuck, this is all coming to me now, I want to run this fucking adventure, two sessions minimum now).

Yeah, you rustled me. Go fuck yourself shitty minmax player. I run an RPG. You should probably go back to playing 4e.

The pages per spell rule is a 3.5 thing. I don't think it carried over, because it annoyed people who needed 8 pages to Power Word Stun. What you do need is 50gp per spell level worth of material components. In the examples given, that might be meticulously coloured threads, or finely tuned calipers.

How about this improvement to Bladelock? When you get your weapon, you can also obtain either the Dueling or the Great Weapon Fighting Styles.

Soldiers used to throw rocks from the top of a keep's walls onto enemies charging up ladders, too. I guess they should have used javelins instead for the superior range and extra d2, or waited until they got in swording range. Someone probably should have told the enemies that getting hit by a rock while on a ladder doesn't give you a chance to be knocked off per RAW, either!

I really think that is what it is all about. I'm inclined, even though I have argued above against, with allowing it. But it really comes down to 'so is this guy wanting to carry a table around from now on'.

These right here. There are hundreds of ways you can prep an ambush with these items, and rogues can toss them out with every turn due to cunning action.

I had some players sneak up on a goblin encampment in a recent session. Rogue and Ranger scattered caltrops and ball bearings in a kind of choke point, then hurled a flask of lamp oil each at the campfires that the goblins were squatting around. Splash fire damage for all goblins, who then rushed into a prepared kill zone and got lit up by every character that had ranged attacks.

It was great.

And honestly I really don't think of the str stat as being the end all as to how strong a character is. It has to do with combat capability and the use of strength that way. In reality a giant would have something like a several hundred strength in comparison to a human. Not just a few points more.

If they had an endless supply of javelins as cheaply as rocks, yeah they very well might have. Regardless, in your example they are using gravity as a force multiplier to assist their attack. Gravity works for them, not against them.

It gets multiattack because it's a particular type of monster.

An ogre's greatclub does 2d8 instead of 1d8 because it's an ogre.

Monsters are unusual, yeah, due to supernatural abilities, sheer power, or magic. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, the average commoner can't use an Action Surge or cast spells.

If the opponent doesn't know where the boulder is falling from then I'd say Dex save, taking half damage on a success.

If they know then it's an attack based off Wis or Int, as you're trying to aim/predict where the boulder will fall.

That's less about aim and more about correctly judging that you're in the right position to just let something go, or that the enemy will be there in several seconds when the rock finally lands. That's a lot of spatial perception. But let's look at a flail. That's 1d8, has a smaller contact by virtue of being round, but still weighs just two pounds (a little less than half of which is in the chain and handle anyway). So you've got a 1-1.5 lb metal ball striking with twice the potential force of brick and no potential damage increase from the weight of the body on follow through. Where does this extra force and damage come from? The increased reach of the weapon meaning the head is travelling at a greater velocity? What if we throw the brick with a modified atlatl?

See, the damage rules aren't consistent. They don't really obey physics. Theyr'e arranged as such for balance purposes, and that's about it. Everything falls apart once you bring calculations into it, so it's all to be avoided. That means when your player says his hulking beefcake wants to throw this entire brazier at an enemy in lieu of stabbing him twice, you let that fucker do more than 1d4+Strength damage because IT'S FUCKING COOL AND THAT'S WHY PEOPLE ARE PLAYING THE GAME TO BEGIN WITH. Rewarding creative play and terrain usage with sub-optimal damage because "muh rules" is no fun.

Can you attach an illusion to an object? My party had to bluff our way into a cult area, and while two of us had disguises and were the right size, the Dwarf Fighter wasn't. Our caster put a Minor Illusion on his warhammer so it looked like a yoke, and we bluffed that he was our prisoner. The illusion moved with the hammer so it appeared convincing, but now I'm not so sure that you can do that RAW with illusions.

It depends on the type of illusion. I think the level one and above spells can be laid over objects and be made to move as the caster wills them, as long as they remain within range or something. Just look up the spell descriptions for them.

Much of the problems, I think, come from the basic idea that most of the things posted here tend to argue for the improvised weapon - usually common items - being better weapons than the stuff the character is carrying around. Which begs the question why he, or anyone, is carrying them around.

The 1d4 rule is fine, I think, in most cases. The best use of an improvised weapon, in my opinion, is for the player to try and grab some sort of narrative/scene advantage that makes sense but isn't covered directly in the rules for that moment. I'm all about that. Tell me more, let's do this.

But I'm not interested in an argument every time we have a fight because the player (as seems to be described in these threads) wants to use a rock or chair or a gnome as a weapon instead of his sword.

Cool if you are playing that kind of game. And that may be the main problem here. But not so cool if you are not playing that sort of wacky Jackie Chan adventure/anime game.

But really, what is the problem? If it is an issue for the player then leave the game. As a DM I have no problem with that. If you were cool otherwise I will keep you in mind if I decide to run that sort of game later on.

Welp, story time.

The party had entered a tunnel, burrowed by a bullete, that was supposed to lead to the entrance of a cultist lair.
The bullete came charging back down the tunnel, but since the rogue had obscene perception, I gave him a round to prepare and he tosses a bag of fucking ballbearings in front of the party. I lol and the bullete charges right at them.
The rogue's like "Read the rules, dummy."
Ballbearings work on Large or smaller creatures. DC X Dex save or end movement prone on the spot.

So the scariest thing the group had ever seen became the silliest thing as a bullete rounds the corner, rapacious intent abound, and does a stupid scooby-doo banana-peel slip, and all the PCs fucking lay in to it.

Respect the ballbearings, anon.

Multiclassing does fuck those over. Class abilities and ASIs are on a per-class basis. The things that count total character levels are spellcasting (at least, levels in spellcasting classes) and proficiency.

Tavern Brawler is great. You will have fun with it. You can be a cool grappling guy with just that, but realize that grappling every single turn isn't always your best option. Look into cobbling together some kind of "improvised fist weapon" if you want to punch things a lot. You can easily swing something like a d6 if your DM isn't a huge twat.

Stick with barbarian until level 5 at least. You need that extra attack to remain competitive.

Some options for feats include shield master and tavern brawler. Both give you a bonus action that CCs people. IMO, tavern brawler is more fun because that lets you whack people with the scenery.
