The fact that so many pages still name Cryptic Command and Remand as "the greatest or most influential" counterspells in modern only tells you how far this format still is from becoming a serious one. Legacy critics have long recognized that the greatest card of all times is Brainstorm and Swords to Plowshare, which were not the most expensive or flashy or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Vintage critics rank the highly controversial Young Pyromancer over classical cards which were highly popular in courts around Europe. Modern critics are still blinded by commercial success. Cryptic and Remand are more expensive than anything else (not true, by the way), therefore they must be the greatest. Legacy players critics grow up checking a lot of legacy decks of the past, vintage critics grow up playing a lot of vintage decks of the past. Modern critics are often totally ignorant of the decks of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Cryptic did anything worthy of being saved.

Normally play Legacy, but decided I'd try something new for Modern because Storm got totally clotheslined a year or two ago.

I brewed up a Bring to Light/Gifts deck today for a tournament tomorrow. I don't have it readily available, so I can't remember which lands with total accuracy, but here's what I remember of the decklist:

Two general questions: does this look like it'll fold immediately, and if so, what should change (in b4 PLAY SPLINER TWINS)? Any recommendations for the sideboard? Here's what I've put together so far:

2x Timely Reinforcements
2x Shatterstorm
1x Slaughter Games
1x Wrath of God
3x Spell Pierce
2x ?????
1x Profit

Anybody got suggestions? Couple of things I want to run (and know I should) but can't afford atm: Snapcaster; Elesh Norn; Phyrexian Obliterator; Karn; Flusterstorm (SB). Hoping to get my hands on a Banana King, though I don't think I'm going to run more than one in the 75.

Couple of things I've noticed: the 4cmc slot is pretty weak for BtL right now. Looking for stuff that I can probably find easily or recommendations for multiples (I've got a quad of Rhinos, a quad of Wraths, and a quad of The Supremes).

Can list the stuff I've been considering if anyone's interested. Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!

I'm curious about your choices of Bolas and Elspeth in the list. I can understand running Lili for her raw power, but being unable to tutor planeswalkers with BTL or reanimate them efficently seems off, especially when you could work on having more mainboard answers to especially aggressive decks.

I can BtL for Obzedat's Aid if one of the 'walkers is in the graveyard. I picked those two because Bolas is great against singular, big threats (and at just causing table-flips) and Elspeth is good at wiping the board or throwing down chumps.

That's the most heavily experimental sector of the deck. If I were to cut them, I'd probably add a third Liliana and either a) a Sun Titan and a Detention Sphere or b) Thragtusk/Rhino and another board wipe, aforementioned wish-list cards notwithstanding.

What's the appeal to throwing in so many discard effects? Seems like you'll just be emptying your own hand without gaining any advantage.

Looks like this deck could benefit from some Gurmag Anglers, some Tombstalkers, and more Banana Kings instead of Hidden Horror and Squee. I don't think I'd recommend running so much self-discard without Snapcasters, more Banana Kings, Bloodghasts, or really solid Flashback spells (of which there are few). I'd run Lingering Souls instead of Call to the Netherworld and more cards to synergize with Pack Rat when they're discarded instead of Magi of the Bazaar.

I played Legacy for 7 years before I even started playing modern. If you have actually played any Legacy (for more than a fucking week) then you have dealt with huge changes to banned lists.

Been considering getting into the format with either U/G Infect or Mono U Tron. Tron seems like a lot of fun but Infect seems way easier to get into. Anyone got experiences with Mono U Tron? How well does it fare and how hard is it to learn?

Good against pure combo and control decks, meh to bad against beatdown midrange and abysmally bad agaisnt aggro.

It's the most basic form of control. 90% of the time you just draw-go to hold a counter (or fake one) and then just Thirst for Knowledge or crack a map if you didn't counter anything.

Unless you are willing to at some point upgrade to GR Tron, I would say go with UG infect.

If I were to buy the whole basic U Tron right now it'd cost me 190 dollars. How much more expensive is the Green Red version?

If I were to go for the U/G Infect I'd only have to spend 90 dollars since I already have all the Inkmoth Nexuses. So it's leaning towards Infect after your post. Thanks a lot for your assistance.

You need the Karns, the Oblivion Stones and the burnwillows so quite a bit more.

You could try monogreen with any mana dork and Ranger's Guile for protection, but you'd end up being a very easily disruptable deck with absolutely no protection against other combo or the mirror. Still, Monogreen Infect is an OK place to start building the deck and slowly transition towards blue as you acquire the pieces.

U Tron your sideboard is mostly dedicated to fighting aggro. Aetherize, Aetherspouts, Engineered Explosives, Chalice of the Void are all good considerations for it but you can stick with the first two cards for budget options. The GR version of Tron is much more expensive but also more vulnerable to tron land hate where as the U Tron deck has multiple avenues to win and not as easily disrupted by standard Tron hate. A person can gain a gajillion life with Anafenza/Melira+Kitchen Finks and you can still win with U Tron by locking them down with Mindslaver. The bonus of playing U Tron is that you don't need fetches or shocks and can have a semi competitive deck to play in tournaments.

It's pretty much like a standard U control deck but you have ways to beat and interact with many of the top decks.

As far as I know, it summoning sickness doesn't look whether it etb on your turn, but whether it get through the whole upkeep. So if you could summon it during the untapstep, it wouldn't be sick. Doesn't change the fact that you can cast it in your upkeep the earliest and thus it is sick.

Kuldotha Red guy here. Had a few good ideas for the sideboard and did some more testing on the mainboard. I took out Vault Skirge for Mishra's bauble, Vault Skirge was almost always a bad card and had little impact on the game. A 1/1 with lifelink for 1 just wasn't cutting it. Mishra's bauble isnt a creature, which sucks, but its the best sac target for kuldotha rebirth turn 1. And if i draw it It's a cantrip, so it always does something. I took out Molten Rain in the SB for boom//bust. I think its a huge improvement, the decks curve tops out at 2 across the board and is completely fine with losing the land to boom if it makes a Tron or Amulet player durdle a few turns. Here's the current list...

Hasn't been good in a long time. Midrange isn't doable with those colors. UWR control is just worse than Grixis and even that's not that good at the moment.

It needs better ways to grind because Jund shits on it late game and an early path isn't what it used to be. Maybe flip Jace or new Gideon could help with that but I'm not sure.

living end is a pretty good deck, but it's complete reliance on the graveyard gets it hosed pretty bad depending on how much grave hate the opponent has in sideboard. it's a solid tier 2 deck. it's even put up some impressive results at events. I would say it's closer to a T1.5 deck, but it's still not dominating the format like jund/tron/twin does

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Birthing Pod, Flickerwisp, Leonin Arbiter and Restauration Angel look like p epic cards to me, might also want to play some Brimaz, King of Oreskos in there. It might not be as much of a control/land denial thing as in legacy, but I think it could be decent in my local meta, especially with Thalia and Flickerwisp because everyone and their mothers here play burn, twin and control generally. Opinions?

So, how would one go about making a deck that runs Seance?

It's hillarious with Snapcaster Mage and Vendilion Clique.
Also as a combo with Mirror-Mad Phantasm and Laboratory Maniac.

I've been toying with running jeskai for the looting, or esper for a gifts package.

The only good UR Delver deck is Grixis Delver, and that's not even that good when you can just play Grixis Control/Twin. Play Fish and do the weird thing where you only play like 4-6 Islands so you metafuck people who bring in Choke.

I used to run it in a UB control list with Tezz2.0 as a finisher. The idea was to play a bunch of narrow 1 CMC hate artifacts and use Intuition to find th right ones for the situation, while recycling them with academy ruins if needed.

I purchase the less than real card. I put the card on ebay. I sell it. 80% of the time they either don't know it's fake, or fuck up the returns process and I get to keep the money.

Had one retard do the bend test. Creased the card clearly and admitted to it. Simple call to ebay and that case was closed in my favor.

Yes it is retarded as it looks. Works MAYBE half the time.

Depends what I buy. Single specific cards are $4-5 each. A set would be around $50, and each set has 54 cards in it. Problem with the set is that people know what to look for out of them. So if you suddenly put up a bunch of cards form that one set, people are much less likely to buy.

I started very similar to this. Snapcaster is good and should be bought first but since you got budget concerns grab 2 remands and 2 spells snares to replace dispel and 2 mana leak. I suggest going grixis with a creature package of 4 delver, 4 pyro, 2 tasigur, 1-2 gurmag and 4 snapcasters (or budgetize with 2 grim lava mancers).

Remind me why Stoneforge Mystic is still banned again? It's not played in Legacy nearly as much as Snapcaster, and practically half of Modern Jund aside from the land is played more widely in Legacy as well (Bolt, Decay, Liliana, Goyf, and Thoughtseize are the main examples).

I legitimately think Young Pyromancer + Lingering Souls could be a thing. I also think that Stoke the Flames is a real card in the deck. Being able to go T2 Pyromancer, T3 Souls, then tap them all and Stoke something which also gives you another guy just seems so powerful.

Also I find it very funny that in standard PTs they try to push the new set as hard as they can like with how in the DTK PT they had the whole "LETS COUNT HOW MANY DRAGONS SHOW UP IN EVERY GAME xD!" between rounds, but with PT BFZ they just gave up. Not weird seeing how only Gideon and a couple of the new lands were the only things that made it to day 2/top8.

I don't get your reasoning for this. The B&R updates are released before the new sets are. When they ban or unban something, they don't know what effect the new set will have on the metagame.

Junk with SFM wouldn't be any better than it is now. Sure, it could tutor Batterskull or Swords. But then it has to cut things it wants. At best Junk with SFM would be a marginally less powerful if not different take on the classic Junk currently in the metagame.

Okay so I have this issue with a friend about MTG. Him and I are great friends and play MTG together sometimes and things have been going good for a while. Recently his dad discovered a hoard of old MTG cards and gave them to him. This wouldn't be a problem except that many of the old cards haven't gone through the balancing many of the newer cards have. There's circles of protection from all of X color cards, unblockable direct damage per round enchantments, near infinite damage "glitches", and low mana cost sorceries that completely flip an entire battle on its head. How do I discuss this problem without coming off as a whining sperg?

Early-game (when he can dodge minor removal) he gives your opponent a card, which he most certainly will be able to use before you use the card that YOU draw with him. Late-game he's too easily removed with raw damage or spells. He's still a great planeswalker, but he just doesn't match Jace the Wallet Destroyer.

He recently did a binding mashup with clockwork swarm and a random monster with first strike. This kind of clockwork swarm had no limit to the amount of +1/+0 counters you could put on it so after literally two rounds i was trying to defend against a 16/5 and 16/5 monster gang up where one would kill one of my creatures every round and the other would stay and kill any monster I would try to attack with.

I've seen some guy trying some kind of Wildfire deck with a lot of ramp which was kinda interesting, but tier3 at most

I play for fun but competitive is more fun to me because it tests my deck and skills with the deck. Knowing when to play the right spells, knowing when to attack and when to hold off and especially knowing how to build a good sideboard and sideboard cards in effectively are skills you don't start with but rather pick up through multiple FNMS. You just slowly get better at the game and at the decks you play and that to me is fun.

Half burn half aggro? The Militants are too slow and weak and don't really to fit the rest of the deck, 4 Rancors are way too many as are 4 Paths in an aggro deck. Geists aren't the worst but they are weak and sometimes painful to cast for little upside.

If your meta is bloodmoon heavy then I would suggest cutting those Quarters for basics. Overall, not the worst. Look into Kird Ape, Experiment One, Goblin Guide, maybe Ghor-Clan.

Tribal decks are babies first deck every time. They hold your hand and build themselves.
You aren't ready for modern at all if you still don't understand decks past tribal levels.

That being said, Elves, Merfolk and if you're stretching it, Myr and Goblins.

So, I decided to try and make Mardu tokens work. I have in the mainboard the cards I consider to be the core of the deck. This leaves me 7-10 flex slots in the mainboard (the full four Gideons are certainly debatable, but I think at least two are necessary). I have the cards I'm considering adding in the maybeboard, but I'm having a really hard time deciding what to add.

Goblin Rabblemaster produces free hasty tokens, and is a hell of a clock himself if left unanswered. He has the potential to run away with games, but also does nothing to benefit YP or Mentor and dies to bolt.

With no access to U or G mana, Gurmag Angler has more potential than Tasigur. Angler plays very well with the rest of the deck, which aims to cast a lot of efficient spells rather quickly. There's a bit of anti-synergy with Lingering Souls, though.

IoK is good against almost every deck in the format, and triggers YP/Mentor at only 1cmc. It's harder to think of reasons NOT to include it.

Intangible Virtue is a 2cmc anthem that hits all of our tokens and triggers Mentor. Great against aggro, but perhaps a bit redundant with Gideon in the list.

Slaughter Pact is great in a pinch, and can trigger YP/Mentor even while tapped out. Great surprise factor, but potentially dead in the Jund/Junk matchup.

Spectral Procession is flexible and puts three bodies in the air for (hopefully) only 3 mana while also triggering YP/Mentor. The color weight is a potential issue, though, since the deck is tricolor.

Stoke has a lot of potential. Turn two YP followed by turn three Lingering Souls, convoke/stoke is the dream, but it can be a dead topdeck and does almost nothing to help you if you're behind. Without board presence, it isn't very good.

Been thinking about getting into modern but I've been out of Magic since Ravnica and have no idea what's been going on other than playing with cards in the duels games. I've also heard a lot about a rhino. The last standard deck I made was a U/R Magnavore land denial deck. In terms of modern, where would that fall on the power scale? Win a game every once in a while or pray to Heliod? Trying to get a sense of the power scale.

So I am thinking more and more about coralknight. I have a midrange shell, and I am thinking, well, lighning greaves is legal in Modern, is it not? ah, yes, shroud, the double-edged sword. I guess that is the reason why greaves isn't played in affinity/robots? shroud messes with the +1/+1 counters from ravager as well.

A deck in Modern needs to be fast, strong, versatile, swift as a coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon, etc etc

A land denial is none of the above. It would be beaten fast and beaten often by any and all competitive decks tier 3 and above. Strong decks in today's meta are (and take the tiers with a grain of salt, they're only to classify decks):

Tier 1
>Affinity
>Burn
>Jund
>Junk
>Twin (Grixis and UR)

Tier 1.5-2
>UrzaTron
>Bloom Titan
>Infect
>Merfolk
>Naya Zoo and I say that tentatively

Mardu Tokens doesnt work
Its worse than BW Tokens except against certain decks that normal Tokens cant beatdown against, ie Control decks
It has no control plan except iok against aggro and its not as fast as most aggro decks, has nothing except path vs certain combo decks, doesnt generate Tokens as fast as Delver for pyro/mentor
In other words, its just not good. It will steal games, and if you draw perfectly you may 50/50 matchups, but it doesnt solve any of the problems of normal Tokens
Tokens needs to be faster and have more draw power to be tier 1. Until that happens, its always going to be tier 2-2.5

Youve got better card advantage and tempo, than UW Tron, but less inevitability. You lose to every aggro deck, just less hard than UW Tron, every midrange deck if they decide they are the beatdown deck, and most control decks
Run counterspells, they are essential. You have path and too much discard, what happens if they draw a t2 summer Bloom, or draw a map?

UR Delver (remove his shit, he cant kill you fast enough)

Bad Matchups
Gr Tron (Karn rapes you, he doesnt play colours)
BW Tokens (blanks removal, just as much discard and you lose if you dont reanimate elesh norn/Iona by 5)
Twin (removal and discard hurts him, but he is faster and counters all your shit)
Merfolk (just much better in general than you, faster, sure you run heaps of removal but he will just side in counters)

Terrible
Infect (no answers to anything he has)
Bogles (you cant do anything to him)
Burn (you do nothing before turn 5, eidolon kills you)
Elves (too fast, you lose every game)
Affinity (too fast, you lose every game)

No advice. Switch to UW tron

Jund is midrange, it can be offensive or defensive. If yours is a control deck, it needs answers to everything. Needs removal, needs counters, specific hate for bad matchups, enchantment/artefact hate, etc, as well as the win condition and the ability to grind a game
