How is this even supposed to come into effect? A magi is only revealed when the previous one dies, and that magi can't die unless it has no dream creatures on the field. Is this effect activated from the discard pile?

Recurring is activated from the discard pile. Dresh has several cards that interact from or with the discard pile.
