So I've been roleplaying with a friend for years online with various settings and such and I have no issue playing characters over the 'net. However when I ever try to do a face to face PnP I just can't get into it and get nervous and self-conscious. I've never really liked acting and I get embarrassed easily. What do?

Well ease yourself into, if it's a casual setting, and especially if it's at your own house. I find some light drinking can really get people into the roleplay.

Hmm okay.

I guess I also find it difficult because since we were doing it over e-mail I had time to think about what they'd say and react and stuff like that. Doing it at a table is sort've more off the cuff and I don't want people just sitting there awkwardly while I try to think of something to do/say.

Just force yourself to do it once, after that it becomes alot easier. Find a group and make a character who can integrate well without becoming a huge focus of the story. The first time I played in an IRL group, I made a skill-monkey Rogue that just sorta tagged along to handle the situations our combat tanks couldn't. I didn't have to spend alot of time in the spotlight, but I still had chances to make my character useful and mesh with the other players.

Don't be one of those grognards that plays a character opposite to your own gender, especially if it's your first time with a group of people. Not saying you can't do it eventually, but for your first game it's kinda awkward and gives the wrong impression, especially if they know your only games so far have been online.

Should I eventually choose to play the opposite gender, should I bother trying to change my voice at all? Having a big male berserker with a girl voice seems a bit odd.

Girls playing as guys, feel free to make the voice more guttural. It´ll just seem a little comic.
If it´s a serious campaign, then just talk slow and deep to get a similar "manly" effect without sounding like a caricature.

You might not be able to punch out soliloquys when you want them, but you're trading that for the ability to communicate through body language, to bounce of others in the moment, and share the energy of the whole room. It's worth it. Having to settle for simple answers when you'd rather wax poetic about the cost of being a lost barbarian boy in the big city is the cost of admission

Anyway, if you get into your character's head you'll find yourself speaking like them off the cuff anyway.

In general, trying to imitate the opposite gender's voice sounds even sillier. You're better off voicing your male big gruff barbarian the same way you'd voice a female big gruff barbarian.

Being shittier IRL is absolutely normal. Protip, redefine what a good game is for you. It's gonna be a LOT more trashy from a literature major's perspective, but you gain the ability to interweave the various strands of the conversation a lot more fluidly with the right amount of effort.
