What kind of adventures would you run in a land that has just been through close to 100 years of war, which has offed around 70% of the general population, and has only recently reverted to political stability, albeit fragile political stability.

I've been doing some reading on the Three Kingdoms Era in China, and it's inspired me for a sort of mini post-apocalyptic feel.

Watch the movies "deathwatch", "the road" and the second mad max.

You could also run something like in Apokalypse now or saving private ryan. Hunting down a renegade Officer/unit or rescuing a loyal one.

I could run all kinds of adventures but I have no idea how you could pull off a backstory like that. What was the justifiable cause for a 100 year war and a wiped out 70%?

Haven't fully decided, but probably something in the usual scope of fantasy settings, definitely pre industrial, probably pre age of exploration, how far back you want to go I'm not entirely sure of.

Well, going from history, you have a weak but theoretically absolute monarch who is broke as fuck owing to a bad taxation system, and a popular revolt breaking out when he tries to raise more money. This leads said monarch to allow the regional governors and nobility to raise their own armies to combat the threat, which then collapses the government entirely as they want to play with their new toys. Cue in a massive wars between these pettty kings that destroys most of the irrigation framework that used to be quite extensive, and when the famines set in, lots and lots of people are gone.

Eventually, someone battles their way to the top, but by that point well, you've gone from about 55.4 million people to 16.1 million.

Not OP, but the war could have just been a side effect of plague or resource conflict. Famine, plummeting birth rates and disease might have been the big killers.

100 years is a bit much for constant warfare (assuming the combatants are mundane human kingdoms), but the real 100 years war was really just a whole bunch of short wars over the same bit of territory.

One thing I would point out, and I don't want to get too /pol/ about this, is that the sort of war they practiced in China is quite a bit different from the kinds of war you see in Europe, especially Western Europe. Armies were typically much smaller compared to the overall population, you had fewer pitched battles and a lot more maneuvering for raid and counterraid, and war was overall less "intense" for lack of a better word.

And the biggest killer in the Three Kingdoms period historically seems to have been famine, albeit war-induced famine. Rampaging armies tended to strike at the the irrigation lines and other infrastructure that made a lot of the agricultural gains of the Han dynasty possible, and until they could be rebuilt, the carrying capacity was just a lot lower, and that's before you have hundreds of thousands of people marching off to die in godforsaken mountain passes.
