Man, I hope farsight enclaves get their update soon. I want to use them as well. I love my farsight army. Nothing like having a lightsaber guy suddenly surprise a marine player who were celebrating having his terminators survive the shooting long enough to hit cc, only to be sliced in half by a melta sword.

That, and orks. By eternal bane when playing farsight enclaves. I can't explain it, but man, if I am ever in a position to charge, I do so. Pathfinders, fire warriors, broadsides, doesn't matter. I don't know why. It'll be better with a 1-9 crisis unit, I guess, but there is nothing like watching a group of crisis suits shoot at an Ork unit, see a few of them survived, and then charge in with reckless abandon, trying to punch the remaining orks to death.

Too bad they practically always get slaughtered in return.

Don't count on it. If the Iyanden book is any indication, GW seems to have moved on from their brief fling with Codex suppliments, instead producing small but distinct mini-codexes like Harlequins. I wouldn't expect books like Farsight Enclaves, Haemonculus Covens, or even the Clan Raukan IH suppliment to receive any updates unless GW turns them into their own, self-contained army.

Of course there's no reason why you can't keep playing with them - their rules mostly interface with the newer codexes pretty well, especially since the new Tau codex wasn't much more than an errata with a few extra units tossed in.

Terminators should get the Psycannon, which is a Salvo weapon for about 30 pts. Fortunately, Terminators are Relentless, so you can shoot with it using all four shots and still charge.

In terms of weapon upgrades, a good estimate is one Thunder Hammer for every group of five guys, just to give the squad the ability to harm a MC or tank with Hammerhand. Other than that, it's important to keep GK's cheap so I tend to stick with swords on everyone.
Your Hero unit should either be a Librarian or a Grand Master, which are both worthwhile units. The Libby is the best HQ per points, because it's cheap and can be easily buffed to ML 3. Grand Masters don't have all the buffs they had last edition, but are a worthwhile beatstick HQ for close combat and good with the Soul Glaive relic. Hope this advice helps.

I think they were referring to the speculated Mont'ka campaign supplement which will presumably follow the Kauyon campaign supplement.

It's a fairly safe speculation - the Kauyon book ends in a way that invites more development, it has a "1" on the spine, and Farsight is the Mont'ka to Shadowsun's Kauyon.

When we'll see this supplement I don't know, but it's probably coming fairly soon.

Fair point, in that case. It'd certainly be interesting to see what Farsight's up to - he's a pretty cool character, but I get the impression that he doesn't really do a lot outside of protecting his holdings. I'm not sure if he has any longer term goals that have been elaborated upon, so I'm quite looking forwards to seeing how the Enclaves are developing.

The Psycannon is only for one model out of five Termies but the GK's are still ok on price. Each regular GK terminator with a sword is 33 pts, one with a hammer is 43pts, and a psycannon costs 20 pts.

For allies, I generally run two Terminator squads and a Librarian for bare bones stuff. What role do you want the Grey Knights for? Just to add deep-striking pressure?

Well what normally happens with my guard is that I blow up most of the opposing army only for one squad to get close and butcher everyone in melee. I was thinking of attaching the captain to a command squad/platoon squad to challenge HQs and monsters then get some termies for deep field target sniping via deep-strike.

I would caution you regarding the Termie's deep strike capabilities. I've had them land on point only slightly more often than I've had them scatter or mishap large distances and if you're running a parking lot of vehicles, it might not be reliable. Sticking the units in the mid-to-back field might be good to deter assaults and also to provide a threat bubble so that they can run in to help where they are needed. How does that sound? Just a suggestion.

I am honestly surprised. Because of some heavy traveling I did back then, I didn't get the 6th edition codex until long after the release. While buying the book, I saw the farsight enclaves book, and thought I'd buy that as well. Comparing them is just insane, because that farsight book looks about the same as the 5th edition codex, and considering how ridiculously bad some of the things are (namely the signatures and Warlord traits) I was almost certain that it was back from 5th edition.

Holy shit man, who made that book. It can't possibly have been the same guy who made the awesome 6th edition codex. There is just no way.

You might do well to sell the krieg guys if you don't prefer them, make some good cash.

You need the army codex.

Looks like you have a decent force so something like the following is a template to follow at first:
Take command squad with chimera, give two plasma guns and armor upgrades to team
Auotcannon teams sit and do stuff
Take a squad of 40-50 cadians as a platoon, need 5 extra guys to be platoon command.
Take commisar, put him in said large squad
You need another troop, so take 10 catachans as veterans
Add leman russ but don't give it sponsons since the weapon is ordinance
You should be able to add a single basalisk and have something like a 1k points army after some unit upgrades. You lack heavy tank killing power atm.

No. He is however probably the Kais from Dawn of War. Shas' O Kais says he trained under Puretide, and he fights in the monat (solo battlesuit) style. Since the game takes place during the 3rd sphere expansion, him being a pupil of Puretide would have been a plothole in the current timeline. Then the new codex introduces a Puretide's pupil called Kais who was an expert in monat style and got placed in stasis and woken up for the third sphere expansion.

It went about as well as you would expect.

He had death company. But the daemon player would just toss chaff at the squad until it melted away to nothing. His assault squads got rekt. His vanguard did something, but it's hard to feel any lasting accomplishment when he can just summon more dudes and your big overpriced jump pack fuckers can't.

Bloodletters. His death company was taken down by repeatedly getting charged by summoned bloodletters.

He didn't enjoy it.

At FLGS tournament. Round 2. Guy I know is playing this WAAC tourney fag that actually flies around the country playing in shitty 40k min-max contests.
Guy I know ran his sisters with some blood angels, put several of his sisters in FA drop pods because KEK meltaguns. It's worth noting he's a good player.

Other faggot as this 4 force org bullshit of bike HQs and thundercav HQs all in a massive unit of space wolf actual wolfs. Takes that forgeworld bullshit psyker and on turn 1 arrives in drop pod, basically auto-casts invisibility. Since his massive blob scout moved earlier, they move 12 and run and are right in the sisters player face.

Since his whole army is invisible, the sisters player can't actually do a damn thing and after massive frustration resigns the game. The rage was real.

It's worth noting that 4 force invisa spam deathstar guy complained loudly and repeatedly until he was allowed to break the tourney rules that said no more than 2 detachments. Also that his faggot won.

But what's even worse is the sisters player started to lose his eyesight, only to find a brain tumor that had to get removed pretty much the day after this tournament. He's fine now FYI.

I recommend you read the codex and figure out what you like, then run it. You need to be able to kill little dudes, elite dudes and tanks with your army. It's your call.

Personally I run mass infantry with 3 death strike missiles for laughs. There's many different ways to play guard, pretty much all of them work.

I had two games I think that tie for this scenario. Both had to to do with me being entirely to passive and accommodating to my opponent but also involve some rules abuse Id say.

Game One was 3rd Edition, Eldar (me) vs Chaos Space Marines (mostly Tzeentch) Started firing my dark reapers at the thousand sons that were slogging across the table. Opponent would allocate one wound to each guy in turn, so I had to inflict 21 wounds on the unit in order to kill one guy. Needless to say the game ended poorly for me and left a bad taste in my mouth about that particular nonsense

2nd game was 4th edition Eldar (me) against Tau I mistakenly let my opponent set up terrain thinking that most people are reasonable people who want fair and balanced games. There was a line of area cover trees across his deployment zone, a couple of token pieces in my deployment zone and one or two small pieces in the otherwise barren center of the table. As I slogged across the board his crisis suits would jump over the trees shoot and then jump back, I could not return fire as I could not see through the area cover. Needless to say this got old real fast and taught me never to play that guy again. I found out slightly later that he was in fact the local area THAT GUY so i got to find out the hard way.

I once played with an actual autistic guy who spent a shitload of time figuring out what to do and went for smoke breaks every half hour. A simple 1k point game or so took hours and the score at the end was 3-2 to him.

Depends are your BS and how many you can take/how many points they are and what range.

It's missing the anti-marine goals by 1, not having S8 to ID and not AP3 but assult 6 wounding on 2s should give you on average about 1/2 dead marines if you hit all your shots.

I would say depends on the BS of the wielder. S7 is a 2+ to wound against marines, but they still have a considerable 3+ save. If your bs is average and hit half of those (BS3) you might look at 1 wound, MAYBE 2 at best.

If you were BS5 and above though, you can be somewhat sure you're causing 5 wounds on average, often all 6 with maybe 3 getting through. If you ask me for Armour Saves of 2+ or 3+ I always pack the AP. It's just too much of a gamble to rely on 1s or 2s.

Yeah it was fifth IIRC. Weapons that are ID or have twice the T value in S represent getting blasted apart by OP shit and don't allow armour saves nor FnP.

Now ID is just "instantly remove mini if they suffer at least 1 unsaved wound". You still have your saves and FnP I think.

How important is "what you see is what you get"?

I spent $40 extra making sure my kans had grootzookas but looking at tank bustas now it would be a real chore making sure I get 15 of the Rokkit Launcha models.

I also gave my Deff Dreads double rokkits and didn't magnetize them. Now I want to situationally swap them out for more klaws or double flamers. The flamers models are a bit expensive for just that one bit though.

Mostly it's fine as long as you have proper etiquette. Explain to the person before the match and provide your list to read at any time after the game starts. If you counts-as, try putting a small description painted on the rim of the base, like say if you have an SM biker with a meltagun but he has a flamer bit on the model, paint "MELTA" on the rim.

Of course you're bound to meet Max Autismo that insists on always fielding a perfectly painted, based and WYSIWYG army. Last week there was a guy in these threads who called a bunch of people scum and trash for not following that rule to the letter.

I never mentioned any other army, I'm just saying that he went up against daemons and lost because Daemons out meleed his melee and was able to summon loads of chaff to swamp him.

It was a city map, lots of LOS blocking terrain. Plus there was a daemon prince and a Lord of Change with precognition and an eternal blade. But the daemon prince only got into combat once and it was against beaten up assault marines. The KOS might have killed something I'm not sure I think it was his Vanguard.

It isn't even a rule any more, as far as I'm aware. All references to your models having to show the appropriate upgrades on the model have been removed from the rulebook.

Generally the best thing to keep in mind is, "is this likely to confuse or mislead my opponent?" I don't think there are many people who will seriously object if you proxy all the special weapons in one squad as a different type, so long as you let them know what's what. But using the same thing to represent different upgrades ("these Guardsmen with Grenade Launchers have Meltas, but that one's actually a Plasma Gun...") is probably going to raise a few eyebrows.

When it comes to something like Tankbustas, so long as the majority of the models in the unit are what they're supposed to be, you should be fine. Just put the stand-in models up front so the get removed first.

Make some traditional looking tankbustas by simply tooling out a few orks with the tankbusta bombs you get on the boyz sprue and elsewhere. Then put them throughout the tankbusta squad and kill them off first.

If you're careful you could get a jewellers saw and cut off the rokkit pack and magnetize it. Usually I got with 1 flamer and 3 klawz for some horde clearing while still shitting out lods of attacks.

For the tankbustas I completely plan on getting actual tank bustas. As you see in the picture only two of them have rokkits though and I would be running all 15 with rokkit launchas. I am not looking to proxy the unit model, simply the weapon.

Like would my opponent be cool with the guy with a hammer being loaded out with the rokkit launcha even though his model is melee.

The whole unit (Besides the boss nob pk.bp that will have an actual model) will have rokkits so there wont be any mixups.

I don't mind playing against or with proxied stuff, but it's under the assumption that it's either to test something out or a temporary measure until the person in question has enough time and/or money to buy/assemble/paint the proper models.

I feel that doing a "permanent" proxy like that kind of goes against that concept, and the hobby in general.

You get three regular Boyz with Rokkit Launchas, one with a Tankhammer, and a Nob with a Rokkit Launcha. If you got three boxes and tossed two of the Nobz, you could assemble a couple of spare Boyz with the Rokkits in the regular plastic infantry box and use that to max the squad out.

But yes, so long as none of the models in the unit actually have Tankhammers, I doubt anyone will have a problem with you just saying they don't have any upgrades and all have their standard Rokkits.

No, I'm just familiar with most of 40k's model range. I collect Tyranids (shelved due to awful rules), pretty much every flavour of Eldar and Dark Eldar available, Adeptus Mechanicus, and Chaos (primarily Daemons).

If all the models of a squad have the same loadout (as your kans all having grootzookas or the tankbustas without tankhammers) just model them as you like and clarify it with your opponent before the game starts.

A trick for the tankbustas is to use Boyz modelled in a "neutral" stance, like throwing grenades or some other trick.

The only important thing is to make things that are supposed to stand out actually stand out, like a Nob among boyz or a single Skorcha in a grootzokas squad.

Another reason why tau fuck DEldar so hard. Relying on cover and FnP is a crapshot against an army with mass S7 fire on top of easily accessible ignores cover. At AP4, those missile pods seem designed to fuck over DEldar.

Yea. They're a lot of fun, but such a radical departure from the sort of armies I usually play that it took quite a while to get used to them. I really like how they're almost completely infantry-focused and don't have any transports; it gives them a really unique playing style. Deployment is very important since most of your units are slow as hell, but the amount of firepower they kick out as they advance is astounding. The model range is fantastic as well, easily sitting alongside the Dark Eldar line as some of GW's best.

Pretty sure it was confirmed to be the first part in a series, with each novel focused around one of the Pheonix Lords. Honestly, I'm not too hyped. The book was only 'okay', and it felt really short compared to some of BL's older offerings.

the meta in general is pretty dead. It's mostly boardgames and TCGs with a previously very-dedicated WHF community. No idea what happened to it with Age of Sigmar as I don't follow that particular circle.

I won't quit looking, but it really puts a dampener on things when at most you have to keep playing the same person and list.

The swords are ap3 (ignore marine armor and below, doesn't affect other terminators), axes are ap2 (nothing gets to save) and +1 strength but strike last in combat, and mauls/clubs are +2 strength but only ap4.

Yes, they're there. Or this guy has them for power weapons >>43313508 but there's more than just those. There's power fists, chainfists, lightning claws, heavy flamers and Reaper Autocannons. All can be found in the rulebook or CSM codex (or in some cases both)

A word of advice since I always field Termies since 5th.. don't try to be a jack of all trades with them. Honestly, they're not that good, but with some wisdom they can still be used to decent effect.

What I mean is, try not to make one terminator against hordes, another for tanks, another 2 for backup and one guy with a big gun in an attempt to handle everything you may come across. Give them a role and stick to it.

You can find wargear info in the latest version of Codex: Space Marines. However, anything that simply says "power weapon" means you can decide yourself which power weapon you want provided you outfit the model accordingly. Generally, mauls are best against light infantry and some vehicles, swords are best against space marines and units with similar stats, and axes are best against big ass monsters, terminators and other such horrible things. A mix of mauls and axes is rarely a bad idea IMHO.

Well If your tactics involve rushing and beating down the enemy in CC, I don't think you can go wrong with dual LCs. AP3, extra attack base and re-roll to wound. With a squad of 5 you're looking at 4 attacks each on the charge (+1 for charging, +1 for dual-wielding appropriate weapons). If you go Khornate, you're also getting Rage (an extra attack when charging), Counter-attack (still get +1A when being charged yourself) and with the icon of wrath you ALSO get Furious Charge (+1S when charging) and you get to re-roll distance when charging just to make sure you're close enough to slap someone's shit.

So that's... 25 S5 AP3 wound-reroll attacks with a charge distance reroll. Quite handy. Now if you want to have them tag along with the HQ Lord, feel free to give him the same weapons and mark/icon, but 6 termies don't fit into a Land Raider (the most reliable transport for them). If you want to footslog them, they will likely die real fast. If you Deep-strike them, you cannot charge on that turn, and with no ranged weapons you're a sitting duck.

You need to outfit your units for their role. If the rest of your army kills normal troops and other basic stuff easy, then you need something harder hitting for elite infantry, MC and maybe tanks. Avatar is Ws 10, Bs 10, S 6, T 6, W 5, I 10, A 5, ld 10, 3+ save with 5++ invul. He will lose automatically vs abbadon unless you disarm his lighting claw of str 8 rape.

You were Chaos, right? For that, give them Combi-meltas and deep strike them next to something expensive. Careful target selection ought to make the first shot all you need. Since this build is a single shot weapon, keeping them cheap is preferable; don't shell out for fists. Mauls are probably your power weapon of choice, S6 > S5 against vehicles and MCs are mauling your Termies with Smash before the AP2 on the axes can afford you any benefit, so you might as well have better chances of wounding. Marks of Tzeentch (4++) or Nurgle (T5) will buff survivability. But those are more points on a notional suicide unit, so don't add them until you've got an idea of the likelihood of them suriving (you've seen how they perform).

As far as I can remember, CSM only get the Dimensional Key as a homer-type deal. It's an artifact that needs its bearer to kill something in CC first. On the plus side, it makes everything in your army never scatter anywhere. It's an army-wide and board-wide effect.

I'm guessing Tau is the one army that's never going to get anti-psyker or anti-daemon stuff ever so I guess even with overwhelming tactics and firepower that is still their one flaw of the army. So to anyone that plays Tau or against Tau often what do you or they do to counter that large drawback? Is just shoot the psyker or daemon first really the best and only option for them?

BA probably have the best jump pack marines in DC, however they are expensive points wise and have to field at least some non jump pack dudes.
Vanilla marines, thanks to Kauyon, can field formations of nothing but assault/vanguard. But you're limited to 30models per formation, and you'd have to buy a semi expensive HQ for each one

Tau have pretty big problems countering mobile psychic super-units like an IH libby conclave on bikes in an IH command squad. Even if they can get through the BS penalty from Invisibility, most of their strong weapons are blast and therefore can't shoot anyway. All the IC's from such a unit can split up before charging and eat a whole squad of tau each.

Daemons and eldar can do similar shit.

Sounds like purifiers may be what you need from the gk codex to stop people closing on your lines. If there is one purifier left standing you can reasonably expect them to wreck 2-3 units depending on placement.

That's what I did for my dark eldar, fluffed as some bizarre creature from the darkest depths of commoragh (the subdimension where the mandrakes live). One eye open seemed perfectly fluffy given the dark eldar in my army were fucking terrified of the thing. Used a nazugl model. Fun times.

A libby conclave is virtually guaranteed to always be invisible. And to get kills on the unit you probably have to eat through 2+ 3++ 4+++ that can only be ID'd by railheads.

He doesn't really need many other units except for fast, cheap objective grabbers/campers.

Of course the game can go either way as always, but a huge psyker unit like that is absolutely one of the worst matchups for Tau.

Space hulks are extremely dangerous environments. Power armor usually isn't good enough to survive for long. The people going in are essentially exploring and mapping out an entirely unknown area. They have to be prepared to deal with anything.

That sounds like an opinion, not RAW.
Special rules are conferred to the units when making a shooting attack. That's how the buffmander works. The rule literally only confers to his unit in the shooting phase when he explicitly DOESN'T shoot. So if you are shooting "as a unit" you are a unit. You are deliberately trying to add meaning that doesn't exist.

And this is from someone who really hopes GW stops being super retarded, and clarifies that it doesn't work like that. And honestly? I'd never actually use it like that. Ever. Even if the opponent played the rule RAW, I would probably "forget" to share the rule across the units. It's retarded to the extreme, but with the current wording, you ARE shooting AS A UNIT, so rules conferred to your unit will obviously confer to YOUR UNIT while shooting. Since all units shooting is currently treated as a single unit, then it obviously shares the rules anyway.

In my area they started doing tournaments that banned allies and permitted only one faction on the field. Apparently the reason is that a lot of people had enought of always seeing armies that are a min mash of everything without a reason. Like Necron Canoptek formations with Thunderwolves, of Tyranids and Daemons, etc.

I admit, while allies are good for compensate the weakness of your army and allow for very nice things if you want (a friend use a converted Pariah to proxy for his culexus while playing necrons), some things are pretty nonsensical and only done for "gamist" purpose. For someone who play 40k also for the fluff fighting against a mix mash of things taken by five different armies just to maximise bonus without any reason or logic is pretty frustrating.

Even then, since there are so many IC's in the super-squad they can always break out to nab objectives later on too should they wish. I have Tau and Dark Eldar, and I enjoyed using Dark Eldar allies for my Tau. Realspace Raiders suddenly warping in, flying in to fuck over someone. The Tau wasn't sure what these weird, spikey dudes was doing, but hey, they were helping. They didn't know who the fuck they were, they seemed to be evil... or looked evil, at least. They didn't harm the Tau, though, so they wouldn't target them deliberately, but they also wouldn't miss any sleep if a stray shot killed a few of them.

It only worked somewhat well. Incubi and Succubus primarily, who enjoyed the benefit of having the Tau blow the shit out of the most dangerous shooting the enemy had, and then swoop in to grab someone who no longer had their transport or heavy weaponry to depend them.

You're forgetting about target locks, and that there are many, many sources of special rules in tau armies.

Even something as simple as a cadre fireblade supposedly being able to spread his bonus to all firewarrior squads instead of just the one is retarded.

It just means that they'll take longer to decide who to shoot with at the start of their phase (which seems right since that it's pretty much the only good phase they get aside from movement) but once they get the hang of it they'll rarely waste too much.
And if someone is still using his whole army for a single unit 5 months for now, he's no one you should be scared of.

IMO the best way to ally is to shore up weaknesses in either army. Like adding a shooty ally to a CC army or vice versa, or adding more reliable anti-tank or anti-air to a codex that doesn't have much in that department.

One thing that bothers me is this.
Tau Fluff is continued throughout the game, it progress constantly with each new army book unlike many other codex.
This is all fine and dandy, until you get special snowflakes like Farsight, who has lived for how long now? A Tau only lives for like 30-40 years (human years) on a good run. Most from the fire cast don't expect that much at all, considering all the dangers of war and all.
Why is is that this piece of shit still lives, and no fluff is regarding this subject?
I think the same goes with shadowsun, isn't she also old as fuck? I know I reacted to this when the FIRST book of Tau was released, that they some how missed out on their own fluff.

Or is it just that they don't care anymore? In likeness of the recent Tau fluff being the complete opposite to its true source, just because big robots and fortifications sells better.

The way I see it, pick-up games from a fluffy perspective are generally skirmishes, pitched battles or minor conflicts between two factions. Seeing multiple special characters from the same faction is not out of the question, it could be that the chapter was relocating and got a distress signal or something.

But the most important GK character, one of the most important DA character and one of the most important UM character just happen to be in the same place at the same time, over and over again? That shit is reserved for apocalypse or elaborate campaigns, yo.

Well, you are both right and wrong. While it doesn't promptly states WYSIWYG in the first few pages, like in the good´ol days, it does state that each model has a distinct name and profile.
And this goes for the weapons as well, if you're model has a boltgun, it has a profile and a name bound to that specific model-type. You can claim its something that its not, by simply saying, this is a plasma gun, but that still doesn't change the fact that it is a model bolter, and as such, has its own sets of rules.

I do feel this debate is simply the standard of the games you chose to be playing. While allowing proxy to emulate a different type of special weapon is quite usual as I understand it, to me and my friends, all it does is lower the standard of the game.
And in all honesty, if you can swap weapons, why not take you're Space Marines and play them as Eldar? If you don't bother with the weapons profile, why bother with what the model is at all? Would it be classy? No, you would most probably just get a bunch of naggers refusing to play you and you're army of proxies.

I know I got a full can of shit from some lazy looser on /tg/ for saying how we played it here. But we feel it ruins the spirit of the game by allowing proxy and playing unpainted armies. To my surprise, most people thought I was an idiot for thinking this way, which is a bit sad. This hobby should first and foremost be about the models, about painting and having fun playing a game. To proxy is to improve you're army for a better chance to win, and that, to me and my friends, is not what the game is about at all.

At the end of the day, each group is always going to fumble out a set of social standards that fits the nuances of its own members. I don't think this is an issue that there will ever be a complete consensus on - if playing to a fairly strict WYSIWYG standard works for you and yours, then no-one has the right to criticize you for it. Personally I enjoy both the modelling/painting and gaming sides of the hobby, but don't mind keeping them a step apart. Personally I don't think people should feel compelled to pull apart and rebuild models, or be forced to buy entirely new ones, because they find they chose options they thought looked good but turned out to be rubbish or had their favorite units screwed over by GW's big wheel of random nerfs. Yes, you can still keep playing with whatever you've got, but if whatever you've got has turned out to be unplayable, it's not going to be much fun for either player to sit through several one-sided stompings.

Thats where we function differently. At our group, we enjoy the journey of the game. To win is just a bonus, and extra crispy when you win because you played the list, and not the other way around (list building to win).
When gaming in a fluff friendly environment, where WYSIWYG is in act for ALL players. When you know you're buddy will be fielding things considered absolute shit by the internet standard only because he loves the models and fluff so much, you're own crappy units will actually find a place on the field as well!

The beauty of the game really comes to life when you, as you say, find a group that has set its social standard. We play WYSIWYG to about 90%, all in favor of fluff and awesome models before rules, and we encourage to play fully painted by rules such as "hate the gray" (all units firing on an unpainted unit gains "hatred"). By playing the models you love, also makes it damn lot easier to manage painting, because seriously... who here enjoy painting mass duplicates of something just because the rules tells you they are good?

The Warp Hunter looks crazy. D3+1 D-Cannon shots at 36"? Sure, your 6's are downgraded to 5's on the Destroyer chart so the opponent will always get Cover and Invulnerable saves, but it's still pretty punchy. Really looking forwards to giving the list a go.

Zero. Marines are a personal modelling poject of mine. Almost everyone of them is converted, with specific pauldrons, helmets and other things indicating squads, units, companies etc. All characters/honor guards/command squads/HQ are scratchbuilt and magnetized, and I have a lot of them. I'll start painting them after I finish the modelling part, but It doesn't help that work on the Marines tend to be put on the sidelines when I need a new unit to play with the other armies I have.

There's certainly some truth to this. Once you look away from the sort of dull power lists that dominate the tournament circuit, there's a whole host of units and options that make themselves available. But at the same time, there's always going to be ones which are just flat-out bad; units which are horribly overpriced or have stats so wonky they're unable to do what they're supposed to, special rules which have next to no impact on the game, bits of wargear which are objectively, mathematically worse than the other options. There's a midpoint between "play Eldar/Necrons or lose, scrub" and the sort of group you're describing which I think most people fall into, where they can recognize and avoid the biggest trap options but don't feel compelled to squeeze as much power out of their list as possible.

But if someone is new to the hobby and hasn't quite learned to avoid the worst bits of their Codex, or has been playing for a long time and suddenly finds certain units or weapons have been badly nerfed or seriously overcosted, personally I don't see the harm in letting them proxy. One of the great things about 40k is that there isn't a single set metric for what the game *is* or what you're supposed to get out of it. If my opponent isn't really interested in the painting side of the hobby, IMO it's not my place to demand they cater to me by painting all of their models before I play them. I can enjoy my side of things, they can enjoy theirs, and we can both walk away happy.

I'm trying to build my very first army, and decided to go with the Tau. I like shooty things.

I'm looking for a few advices on which units to pick, and these bad boys seem pretty good.
Thing is, I can either buy the V1 or V2 models at the same price, but what about their stats?
If I buy the old models, will I get 3 suits I could field instead of one, even if they're not the same size?

Changing weapons to suit your opponent or because the weapons you stuck on the mini are shit doesn't mean the guy is listbuilding against a threat. It just means he doesn't find it fun having his unit be an unplayable piece of shit. It's a psychological thing, the unit you spent so long converting and painting is now dying real fast and making you think "why did I even bother with these guys?"

True, there are some lists that simply put are better, such as the eldar. And to play Eldar fluffy could open a possibility for being cheesy (hitting fast and hard). But that doesn't necessarily have to be the case.
And as we all know, this is a dice game, where anything could happen!
A game or two back, one 5 man squad of Dark Eldar Wyches (one of the worst units in the game for the points you pay and what it brings to the table) managed to assault and run over a full unit of a Tau commander with bodyguard! I managed to take 1 drone down, and he missed most of his attacks. The few that got past was saved by the 4++, he rolled an 11 and was stabbed in the back by my I6 wych squad!

This memory would not be possible if I had played a meta list from the internet, doing an "all over again" total recap of the last 40 games played. But as it stands, I love the wyches, and in our group they have a place! Even though I don't see them take down many more Tau commanders any time soon.

Also I heard that the old ones are pretty shit to work with because of metal parts.

It all come down to what you want. If you want the better model take the new one, If you don't care much or you like the old and your friends don't care if you play them with a different loadout/you convert them then take the old one.

I guess you can make it out that your community benefits from absolute WYSIWYG, but I know ours won't. Not everybody has the models, not everybody has the money.

Even switching out weapon load outs shouldn't be a big deal. I do it all the time and so do my friends. We have to or else we just literally couldn't beat some things we go up against.

My friend still has the finecast Vanguard veterans. Some of their load outs are wonky as fuck if I remember. Am I going to stop him proxying equipment? Hell no, they need that to function.

I don't think it's even remotely fun to be forced into playing a subpar, objectively bad bit of wargear all in the name of wysiwyg. I think it's poor form tbh.

You should run whatever you like, you can make it work.
Tau need to shoot things to death, meaning they need to be able to kill all the different things at range. Battlesuits can be outfitted to kill anything, fire warriors are excellent basic troops, pathfinders are key make sure you have some. Markerlights from them are why the army works.
If you haven't gotten a look at the codex, do so. If you don't know how the game is played, learn that as well. Don't buy anything until you've done your research, but don't buy exactly what people tell you to buy, make those choices for yourself.

I think you completely missed my point above. Don't know if I didn't put it out clear enough, or if you're just stupid (or perhaps a bit of both).
My point being, if you encourage people to play the models they love, and try to build fluffy fully painted armies, it lifts the spirit of the game. Or at least has done so in our community.
We now play mostly painted, and on painted terrain boards as well.

Thats called a conversion. Which to me is totally fine. If he likes his models, and spend time and effort to make it look good, why not. I myself have started to magnetize my armies, so when the time comes to try out new wargear and such I can if I want to! It takes more time, and is costly, but I like the idea of being able to customize my armies a bit. And it invites for more painting, which I love!

considering the tau basically had their overhauled rules released to public 3-4 days ago, no one can say for sure yet what a good tau comp is.

my advice: read up on how to magnetize your stuff, and look up a good magnet supplier (I use K&J magnetics) this will allow you to keep your options flexible as you learn how your army works, and experiment.

as for which units: the most versatile and commonly-used units in your codex will be the stuff to make a hunter cadre (the core of your new super-detachment from warzone damocles) you'll probably want to pick up a commander, 3 breacher/strikes, a riptide, broadside, a ghost keel, and 2 units of stealthsuits.

the latter makes the "optimized stealth cadre" which is criminally good. the above would give you a valid hunter contingent core you can expand on as you get a better handle on things and decide what style of force fits you best.

With magnets in place, I can pretty much try out new stuff every game, and that to me is fun, as I like variety! But I do it with class enough to show it on the model.

The difference being, you wont find a player proxying his combi-melta squad being wielded with something less than this. The meltas in this example sets the bench mark so to speak.

That's only partly true. The actual railguns broadsides used to have are still on Hammerheads, and are still awesome.

Broadsides now have Heavy Rail Rifles. S8 AP1. which on it's own sounds great. but in a Tau army it's not worth the points

The Hammerhead has a Railgun which is indeed pretty good at str10 ap1 - it's just a bit overcosted. The Broadsides previously had the same gun and were great, but they were nerfed and now have "heavy rail rifles" rather than railguns, with a strength of 8. This makes them shit against anything but light vehicles, and very inefficient against almost anything else.

The "jewel of tau weaponry" is the Ion Accelerator on the riptide battlesuit, but you don't want to take too many of those because they're extremely good and it will make you seem like a dick. Some other good heavy weapons are the fuck-you laser(s) on the Stormsurge (like with the riptide, not for smaller games), the new missile pods on broadside suits, and the cyclic ion raker on ghostkeels.

For smaller weapons there are the doesn't-get-hot plasma rifles of crisis suits, range 18 meltaguns, and smart missile systems (essentially a homing missile machinegun that doesn't need line of sight and ignores cover..). Some rather heavy firepower can also be fielded in more oddball choices like a full (5) piranha skimmer squadron which fire 40 shots together, or using Farsight to deepstrike 9 crisis suits with double flamers without scatter.

Each to his own, we have been through the teenage years of playing unpainted proxy armies on our moms kitchen table, where winning was the only goal. Christ, I have played and attended hobbies like 40k for 17+ years now. And now, the group that still plays, do so with a common idea of what its all about. We play fully painted, and keeps it fluffy because we like it. We don't force players to be a certain way, we are in this group because we like playing and enjoying the hobby together. And have all experienced the other side of the argument, we all have a history of the unpainted times when none of us took the hobby quite serious.

This actually made me giggle. You adapt, and you use you're meltas on the targets you prioritize, such as the T4 multi wound warriors, or the big monsters. If you initially wants chocolate flavor ice cream and gets it, only to realize you wanted vanilla instead, what do you do? You learn to like chocolate or you go back in, and get another batch of ice cream.

I know this favors the veterans, as they have more models, and have accumulated more stuff. But thats life, you want to cry about it? Go ahead, still wont change the fact that you glued meltas on you're squad because you initially liked that option.

When in truth, there are tons of better games out there if you're only in it to win. Hell, a 4 year old autistic kid could list build a tourney army from just about any Codex, its not that hard to make a good list. Whats hard is to play a descent list to its full potential.

So to clarify. I'm simply saying, this is how we do it, and we enjoy it. We are all adults who have come to the conclusion that we don't enjoy playing with unpainted miniatures, and proxy armies on a kitchen table.
We have all agreed we wanted to take this hobby a bit more serious, and where all in favor of doing so.

Well tau have many kinds of missiles.

There's:
>missile pods
A straightforward weapon with two fairly strong fairly high ranged shots.
>High yield missile pods
Same thing with twice the fire rate, mounted on broadsides
>Smart missile systems
Ignore cover and line of sight, for rather weak shots
>seeker missiles
One-use missiles that can be shot by the vehicles carrying them or by expending a markerlight token from example pathfinders, giving you increased accuracy. Rarely worth it as upgrades but excellent on the Skyray tank.

Also, the best markerlight sources aren't pathfinders but markerdrones and skyrays. A commander in a markerdrone squad can make them amazingly accurate and mobile compared to pathfinders.

No. You do that for yourself. Making assumptions and demands from your opponent is what earns you your first major Red Flag as "That Guy".

I don't spend 8 hours per marine so I can get my dick stroked at the club by others. I spend 8 hours per marine because I like to put some thought into them and because it's MY hobby. I have no qualms about playing against someone who fields nothing but grey. as I'm in this hobby for converting (done), painting (done) and gaming (also done).

My opponent being unpainted does not have any effect on either of our enjoyment of the game. It doesn't affect the battlefield mechanics, it's fine by me.

The point of this hobby is to have fun, and if you actually read my posts, its not nearly as degrading as you make it sound. I'm mostly talking on how we do it here, and we do it because we love the game, the lore and the hobby.

I want to use D&D as an example as that's also a tabletop that CAN use maps, mats, miniatures etc but doesn't really have to. You go through all those adventures with your bros and it's all in your fucking head! And then I see autists here getting their g-strings in a tizzy because the proper model is unpainted or is wielding the wrong gun.

Well, we are a pretty solid gang here. But Ill give you an example of what happened pretty recently. I went to a tournament for shits and giggles, but found a pretty nice guy who had an amazing Necron army fully painted up.
Met the same guy painting some models in our local shop, and talked for a great bit. Figured out we had just about the same idea on this hobby over all.
We now have a booked game this week.

But a completely new member, as you said, wanting to proxy his team "worse". First question would be, is it fluffy, does he has a story behind this tournament list? Or is it just an old power gamer wanting to change track? If the latter, Id play him, but I would encourage him to start playing fluffy. We have one of these guys on our team right now actually. He used to be a hardcore tournament player, but he just got fed up with it. Now he plays a fluffy Ultra Marine army to the boot!

Also, if they don't have time to paint the models, yet somehow have enough time to assemble them, and play with them, they are fucking retards, because there are tons of ways of painting minis relatively fast, that are way less time consuming than assembling and playing.

I, however, am not, and I uphold the same standard on myself too. I got an Imperial knight, and a bunch of carnifexes I haven't gotten to use at all because I haven't yet painted them.

Playing "fluffy" is retarded. You can play casual opposed as competitive, but playing fluffy means absosultely nothing. Necron Decurion is one of the fluffiest list in existance but it doesn't mean it will anally rape any Tyranid or Orks list, fluffy or not.
