So I'm thinking about hooking up for 3.5/Pathfinder game and play as petite elven girl singing bard. Beautiful as graceful bird, with mesmerizing voice and affinity to everything avian, focused on buffing and healing, completely avoiding combat and everything aggressive, relying on her strong and burly partymates for protection. Also timid and humble, always silent, until she starts to sing.
Am I a faggot for having such unmanly desire? Will you brand me as a magical realmer?

I mean, it sounds like you're looking for validation, rather than any sort of critique. I'm which case, if this is what you want to play, then go for it. A timid bard seems like it would probably clash with your stats, though, since charisma is typically important for them.

Remember, roleplaying is a social game. If you're a fat bastard, and you're creeping out everyone at the table...You're doing it wrong. No, I don't care about your 'role playing' reason, shit's creepy.

Believe me, it's a lot less satisfying than you'd expect, too. I've played pacifists before, but no-one really cares. The rest of your party isn't going to fawn over you, and you're not going to have much chance to do whatever non-combat solution you want when the other three to four guys just want to hack and slash.

Charisma is just a measure for your force of presence, a shy timid bard can have high charisma and get tons of attention for it, but she still just wants to be left alone.

It really depends on your party. Not everyone's in line with one guy wanting to play fantasy heroine. This is why as a DM, I always automatically assume an ensemble cast instead of one protagonist.

Seriously, your character sounds like one of those who hang back and wait for things to happen. That's pretty passive, and since you mainly buff in combat, you're going to be lost in the shuffle.

That said, whether or not you come across as a faggot will depend on your ability to not creep everyone out. If you feel like you may be going magical realm, than you probably are. If you see you're making others at the table uncomfortable, tone it down. If you have a That Guy who's trying to drive you away for your choice while everyone else is ok with what you're doing, tell him to fuck right off. Basically, try to be self aware. If you can manage that, and your group isn't a bunch of insecure closeted fags, you should be ok.

Playing a woman is completely fine. I play a lot of female characters simply because I find that a lot of pretty basic character concepts I like feel fresher when you flip the traditional gender around. I like the boasty, quick-witted warrior type who chases after challenges and all that, but playing a male character like that feels dreadfully boring. It's just same old, same old. Flipping it around, though, gives it some new life and meaning. It's nice, to a point. Hell, I've also played character types that are traditionally associated with females and flipped that too, and I've liked the results as well.

It's fine, it doesn't make you a fag, but it can be harder to implement in a face-to-face game where there's no real disconnect about whose character is speaking and what your own face looks like. Much easier to do when you're hidden behind walls of text.
