Starmetal has already been shown to do extra damage to undead.

This time the fucking up lasted a lot longer than it has before, so it's probably item related. Also, characters in this comic 'know' their stats and level and shit, so if Roy took a level in a non fighter class he'd know what happened.

He's already been beating Durkula around like a rag doll... Somewhat.
The man's got a +5 Sword and one of the stronger Belts of Giant Strength.
Plus the sword was said to "occasionally" glow with a deadly green energy especially harmful to the undead.

Plus he's a decently high level fighter.

Maybe the sword is either drama appropriate for real, or responds to emotional state. Roy's fucking taciturn most of the time, so maybe he needs to learn how to cut loose more, or somesuch.

Look closer, though. His eyes were green the whole time, and he was glowing the whole time just like the sword. And he was healed to full at the end of it.

Something more is going on here. The sword has done the undead effect before, but it's only been on critical hits before.

I said nothing of the sort, just that Roy has something going on beyond just his sword. His grandfather was proud of him for being a monoclassed fighter, so it's unlikely he's going to take a prestige class this late in the game.

Especially since he remarked in Gnome Town that he'd only just regained his lost level. If he recently took a prestige class that granted that shit, he wouldn't have been surprised it happened.

He's been subconsciously holding back this entire fight.

He really was trying to win, but deep down, he was hoping to talk (what he thought was) Durkon out of this craziness, rather than just 'Ok, time to destroy you, asshole'.

Roy stated his own new position quite clearly in this most recent page, though. Pretty sure that's going to affect the sword's glowy anti-undead powers. Note that every time they've come up in the past, Roy was fighting someone/thing(s) that he 100% had no interest in doing anything but destroying (even the mummies of the Draketooths, which he knew were pretty much mindless).

Emotional state matters, and he's arrived at one that makes the sword way more effective.

(Whatever else may be going on.)

My guess is its one of those "Strong Feeling" triggers and while Anger might be the most common, his true power probably comes out while protecting people, or not having conflicting feelings about hurting his opponent.

"Normal terrestrial steel" it was nonmagical, maybe Keen or something but thats literally it. Its his ancestral weapons because he's a fighter and the Greenhilt line of fighters takes all their weapon focuses and weapon specializations in bastard swords, this one in particular

Wasn't even +1 pre-breaking.

OOTS is a fairly low leveled world, hence why a bunch of unoptimized mid-level chucklefucks are literally the planet's only hope.

Low 20s seems about as high as things get, barring cosmic and extraplanar threats like the snarl

It matters that people use the correct words for things so that they can communicate what they mean clearly.

In truth, percentage points is the only way the blacksmith could have expressed his point. A DnD sword helps you more when you're trying to hit a high AC than it does against a low AC, as >>43330955 exhibits. If you go from hitting on an 18 to hitting on a 13, that's way better than going from hitting on a 7 to hitting on a 2. Swords get help you more the more you suck, somehow.

A +4 bonus to hit and damage is pretty damn good, but when you're high level enough, it sits there amid however the fuck other bonuses you're getting. The difference between +20 to hit and +17 to hit is small enough that any number of feats don't seem particularly out of the question, and the damage is a fairly minor thing as well.

Overall, I'd guess it'd translate to maybe 3 or 4 rounds more of fighting in a prolonged engagement.

It actually does more than you think. As a fighter, you're getting multiple iterative attacks at decreasing penalties. Sure that +4 to hit isn't doing much for your first +25 strike, but for the next two-three strikes, it does an awful lot.

They're all 15-16 now I think, apart from Durkula, who is Cleric 14 plus vampire levels. Redcloak is level 17 (and may well be the highest leveled cleric in the world) Xykon is 25-26, Tarquin and his buddies are 18-20 and the Order of the Scribble were 21-22 at their best.

So Durkula took 5 hits from a +5 Greatsword Of Who Knows What The Fuck, plus presumably token damage from hitting the wall. Plus the extra hit and maybe fall damage as a result of the last strip. He really can't be in a good position HP-wise.

This has always irritated me about webcomics and a lot of comicsin general. They're fucking talking the whole time, sometimes managing entire paragraphs of text between swings.
