Hey everyone,
I want to get into rpgs, but I'm really not sure where to start.
I got the dice, and now I only need to pick a game that I'll learn first so I can play with my friends. I only played warhammer so far, and i was only a player and didn't understand much what's going on, my friend just guided us through everything.
WitchCraft looks interesting, is it okay for someone who's only just starting? Is there something else I should take a look at instead?
Legit rpg books are too expensive for me right now, so free pdf versions are much preferred.

Pros: Witchcraft uses the Unisystem rules, which means it's pretty simple, compared to a game like Dungeons & Dragons

Cons: It's 15 years old, so the mechanics are a little dated

What kind of game do you want?

>Conan-Lord of the Rings guys in armor and swords fighting monsters for gold

Different games have different rules that highlight different things, cater to different tastes, and cause the story to advance in different ways. Tell us some more about what you and your group want to see in a game. There are literally thousands of systems out there.

Vampire: the Masquerade is a game where you play sexy edgy vampires trying to out-snowflake each other and jockey for political power. Engine Heart is a game where you all play shitty little robots trying to survive after an apocalypse kills all the humans. Both use a similar type of game mechanic.

I'm more interested in how the game plays, because I literally have no knowledge of any game mechanic whatsoever, basically I'm interested in creating a story that leads everyone through a certain setting, but not having full control of everything, I want everyone to participate and dice to help decide the outcomes.
I might be too general with this, but like I said I'm new at the whole concept and would like to have something easy to learn, so that I can later explore for myself and easily transfer to maybe more complex stuff.

Believe it or not, you are a lot more succinct about what you want out of a game than just about anybody on this board. You should take a look at Witchcraft, and if you like it, the Unisystem rules also support another game called All Flesh Must Be Eaten that's about zombie apocalypses. There are also a bunch of other books that use Unisystem, including Terra Primate where the setting is not-Planet of the Apes.

Another game you should look at is Unknown Armies:

It uses a different set of rules, but it's fairly simple and you will probably like the setting. It's a very modern take on magic, where things like obsessing about a specific porn star can let you warp reality.

A third system to check out is the World of Darkness line, simply because tons of people play it and it's a modern-day occult setting. There are a bunch of different lines - one for vampires, one for werewolves, mummies, frankensteins, fairy-abducted changelings, and a few others I can't think of right now. If you want a specific one there's usually a WoD General thread up that will likely have links.

Also, seconding all of this. You might also want to take a look at Call of Chtulhu if occult things are your gig. Also the new Delta Green standalone which seems to be going for a fairly sleek approach.

As the other anon said, Witchcraft works isn't bad really.

Though now I wonder what the most recent incarnation of the system is. Kinda lost track of it.
