Hey /tg/, currently in the brainstorming part of coming up with a new occult / Gothic horror setting for a campaign I'm starting up with some friends on Halloween. I like the gist of what I've come up with, but second opinions and critiques are always welcome. Feel free to share, too, of you want. Lucengilt: City of Stars Founded: 1287 Grand Orchestrator: Mellie Krunthallow Religious domain: Stars, trade, nobility, mind, shadow Population: 82,000 as of previous census Location: Beneath the Webend Mountains and several dozen miles from the Grey Winter Forest, Lucengilt is perched only a few miles from the Triplicate River, allowing commerce to proceed with some natural barriers for defense. Unique Properties: A monarchical, independent city state, Lucengilt and her surrounding territories are steadfastly neutral in most world politics, but some noble houses have struck alliances beyond their borders. The Grand Overseer is the most influential being in the city, and remains as a semi-religious figure and arbiter to all houses and territories within the area. Lore “Lucengilt is a beautiful place to visit this time of year. No matter where you're coming from, you're sure to enjoy something within the Constellation. And the dreams, my word, never been more entertained in my life.” Arbiter Causun, upon his decision to relocate to the City

Lucengilt has been standing atop the Dunharrow Hills for the past three centuries. Founded by an alliance of humans and gnomes after a meteor struck the land, the city has served as a beacon or celestial studies within recent memory. While the original purpose of the city’s founding has been relegated to urban myth and the bedtime stories of youth, those starry eyed denizens of The Umbrenaut Academy of the Celestial Heavens swear by its authenticity and importance. Regardless, the city stands now as an important center of trade, world-renowned bastion of a unique culture and appointed neutral territory for arbitration and settlement of grievances. The city is also host to two utterly unique arts, world renowned and intimately linked to the culture: the Art of Dreaming and the Art of Spirit Suturing. The Art of Dreaming Discovered within a century of the city’s founding, through the unique application of Lucengilt Ore to an unconscious patient a Scribe is able to profoundly link consciousness to the Dreaming. Upon completion of the link, the Scribe is allowed to mold the dreams of the Dreaming to reveal secrets, share memories and imbue them with compulsions or beneficial thought processes for variable amounts of time. This process is unique to Lucengilt and many travel hundreds of miles for an appointment with a famous Scribe On the other hand, certain Scribes put on shows for entire audiences of Dreaming, retelling famous tales of the darkest horror, most passionate drama, heart-rending romance and utmost bravery.

The Art of Spirit-Suturing While most vices and sins run rampant in society, there are always treatments to such maladies. Within Lucengilt, however, there is a method to ensure against repeat offenders, as well as ways to preserve some of our greatest minds and artists. Within Lucengilt, the domain of death is the newest frontier to explore, and ultimately, subjugate. A Spirit-Suturing is a one-of-a-kind process where a Doctor is able to briefly graft a small portion of a donated soul to a living body. This soul is not conscious, malicious or possessive. Instead, it is like a stronger voiced conscience. Suturing has proven to be an extremely effective tool on wheeling down crime and turning even the blackest of souls to positive members of society. Suturing can also gift a living being with certain qualities of the dearly departed, making it as if they never even left. While the dead cannot control the living, sometimes, their kind words and impulses can guide their hosts into better states of being. “ I've always viewed the Undercut as the one place my fair city could do without. Yet, despite our best efforts, it still manages to stand resolute. I'd admire it if it wasn't so offensive to my eyes.” - Trade Master and Patriarch of the House of Gan, Reginald Clarke Gan.

The Undercut: A black market of sorts, the Undercut is a less than legal trade bazaar that inhabits the Undercut of Lucengilt. While the bazaar itself is a legal establishment, the wares and merchants have a tendency to not be who they claim to be or appear to be. After an influx of Undesirable Goods made their way into the city, The Undercut has been highly policed and patrolled by the city militia. Still, many are not satisfied and seek a more permanent solution to the troublesome market. “Even in our place, we got some nasties. You definitely don't wanna venture past the outskirts of town. Lotsa opportunists and Undesirables. Of course, if you find yourself between the Outskirts and the Gaol? Best stick to the Outskirts. Gaol has walls for a reason. And nobody in this whole damned town will tell you differently.” Portkins Smelth, City Guard, 8th Division. The Gaol: A massive domed portion of the city, The Gaol is host to two equally blighted populations: The Weeping and The Incurables. The Weeping are victims of a brutal plague that swept through the borough known once as Gaolst. Now, it is filled with the raving mad and oddly resilient entities known as The Weeping. The Incurables are much less supernatural but equally as repugnant. Wild beasts masquerading as people, the worst of the worst are shunted off into the Gaol in a permanent exile to be torn asunder by the Weeping. The ritual of purging is known as Mercy’s End. Ever since its institution, Mercy’s End has been hailed as a wondrous solution to a universal problem: what to do with those who don't fit with society's benevolence.

So that's primarily what I got so far, but I'm also thinking of making a home brew race based off organs contained in ceramic bodies enchanted to pass off as uncanny valley humanoids
