What do you prefer to face in your horror games? What do you prefer to run in your horror games?

How would you make something that's nigh unkillable and lethal like Jason or the monster from Amnesia fun for a group of players who expect at least some characters to survive?

Honestly, you throw something they can't, or don't know how to fight, conventionally. How can you fight a situation? Or a property of something that isn't affected by how you'd normally fight things? How would you fight a shapeshifter that's transformed into a party member, without knowing which party member it is, even to the imposter party member?

Terror comes from uncertainty and when the villain is simple unkillable you get tired of it. And if you have weapons that can kill it conventionally, you get tired of it. When the rules of engagement have been so radically altered you introduce a huge element of uncertainty, where action no longer produces expected results along predictable lines.

Anything after that is purely thematic.

It feels weird when I have my players confused and they just sit there quietly. I try to avoid situations like those now and just make it difficult in another way.

Something my character has a chance to survive, at the very least a 20% probability that s/he won't die.

Usually, having a chance to live only makes the game seem more desperate, if you really want your character to survive.

I always believe that something you can't fight or battle is a good point of Horror. Stuff like Jason, Freddy or Michael Myers may be horrible and horrific, but I wouldn't say they were Horror since their story always ends with them getting beaten by a teenager.

That said, I like a lot of different types of Horror. RPGs tend to favour something with a monster (even if it's one of the party members or not a conventional monster), not an abstraction (IT'S YOUR GUILT JAMES MUAHAHA!).

I run Dark Heresy primarily and I intend to have a Slasher in it as a pseudo side-plot. He's not the big villain, but if the players can't put an end to him he may become more of a problem than they can handle.

It isn't about indestructible foes, nor is it about their power. It is about inevitability and the tension it creates. You need a threat, but the more subtle, the better.

To the tune of what other Anons have said, the group I play with and I usually find enemies and scenarios scarier when we must survive or escape them rather than fight and destroy them, at least until the game's climax.

Your players can harry the enemy, they can slow it down or loose it for a time or even harm it, but they can't kill it outright and they can't prevent it from finding them again until the time is right in the narrative.
