What does more damage on average: A normal lvl 1 Fighter (17Str) with GWM using the +10 every time or a lvl 1 Fighter (18Str) no GWM?

Also does anyone feel like the pastebin needs anything extra? 5e specific things, not just D&D in general.

Personally I thought it had slightly too much going on, so losing the extra spells was spot on, and now windsoul is now not just abusable

mostly depends on who you are fighting. Your ability to hit drops drastically with GWF, making hitting the lowest of AC enemies a fair challenge. Because you will be missing so much, your damage will drop considerably too.

On the other hand, having +6 to hit and +4 to damage at Lv. 1 will make alot of fights a good bit easier. You might not get that +10 to damage but you will be at least 50% more likely to hit so you will at worst do even damage either way, and at worst you will never hit with GWM attacks and the 18 Str attacks will connect like a charm fairly often.

well idk if there is any actual graph i could post but its common statistics really. Each probability on a D20 has a 5% chance of occurring. So to hit AC 10 using GWM on Str 17 (3 Mod) at Lv 1 (2 Proficiency) means you have to roll 10 or above to hit (55% chance)

On the other hand, having that extra +1 Str and no negative to decrease your Hit chance, you only have to roll 4 or above to hit that same AC 10 (85% chance). This difference may seem benign at first, but its extremely important again enemies with higher AC, especially once you get to trying to hit enemies with 16+ AC. Will elaborate further if necessary / desired

gwm gives you a +5/+0 to hit, with 11.3/21.3 damage
18 str gives a +6 to hit, with 12.3 damage
didn't get the graph, but even with advantage NOT using gwm is better from AC10 and going up. bless makes it sorta even for an other point or 2.
it's not worth it to power attack at your level, best case you get the same average damage with a worse distribution.

Personally, I think the strongest use of GWM isn't the -5/+10 attacks, but the bonus swing on crits and kills. That part doesn't even seem to require a Heavy weapon, so you can be sword and boarding.

I really hate abilities that trigger on getting a last hit. Like if everyone is pulling their weight and the DM isn't letting you know how badly wounded enemies are, you should only have a 1/4 chance of triggering it.

over 10 rounds, you will miss an average of 30% of your rolls using GWM as well as lose that +1 damage per atk from the higher Str. So for example, lets say all of 18's attacks hit, and 7 of GWM's attacks hit, both using Greatswords (which has an average damage of 7)

GWM = 140 dmg
18 = 110 dmg

So GWM does more damage overall, but that is assuming you don't roll too bad. Hitting that AC 16 baddie becomes a chore when you only can hit him 25% of the time, but you will do alot more damage when you do hit him.

Overall, its theory and formula over reality. Imo, despite the average being better, i would take the 18 Str over GWM. Thats just because I am an unlucky bastard. I rolled two 1's on death saving throws and got my character killed a few hours ago. Shit sucked. But thats life.

Take GWM at level 6 at earliest. you should be able to get a 18 in Str by then and get that +1 Proficiency, so you increase your odds of hitting by 10%. Moreover, enemies almost never get an AC higher than 21, unless they have an ability that temporarily increases their AC. Hence, as your Hit chance goes up, the average enemy becomes easier and easier to hit. Eventually you will almost always break a grunts AC without trouble, so having that extra damage can allow you to clear them faster and prevent party resources from being used too early in a dungeon dive.

a champion, with extra crits and no bonuses, will want it earlier than a paladin or even a barbarian.
you should run the numbers every time, considering your 'usual' conditions, like advantage and spell buffs.

Martials are competitive even without two-handers or GWM, so that's bullshit.

GWM swings aren't always a good idea. Your accuracy is always going to suffer for it and you're not always going to need +10 damage to kill targets, nor does it necessarily mean something will die in one less hit spread around the party. Once you've sussed out a target's AC and the flow of the fight, that's when you should be deciding whether or not risking whiffs with GWM is worth it. (Dis)advantage also factors heavily into this.

The vast majority of groups never make it to levels where GWM swings are highly unlikely to miss, so it's much theorycraft about nothing. I think a Wizards survey said most don't ever get past 6 or 7.

I'm running a 5eth edition game for some friends, there are 5 players and 3 of them are new, one i've played with for 7+ years.

Now, the problem I'm having is, a couple of the players are not really speaking up. They're shy, I assume, or maybe worried about interrupting others. What it's doing is making a very... bad splay in the voices, I have my most familiar player roleplaying a type of character he's never done before, usually he's just the murderhobo incarnate, fucking up everything in his way for literally no reason. Now he's playing a ranger and he's trying to distance himself from that, all well and good. Then I have p4 who is the new murderhobo incarnate. He doesn't think about things before he does them, and he murders anyone when he doesn't get his way. p3 is a cleric who is maximum good, probably the best player at the table at this time, good roleplayer, has fun in the combat, is usefull, ect.

The other two players are the shy ones, they're both casters and they have almost zero input outside of combat. How can I get them to speak up, and in addition, how can I keep my other players from murderhoboing? I've already given one of them an alignment change due to the fact that he tracked a halfling all the way to a giant tower and shot a fucking arrow at her when she stated her class as a dark paladin, not waiting for her to speak. Apparently, he was "chaotic good" but now he's neutral.

The other one thinks the game is going too slow and opens up his phone numerous times during the game. He'll fuck around and do stupid shit like attack guards and tradesmen, also intimidating them in an attempt to strongarm economics.their ass.

Give me some fitting punishments, sorry for the tldr

He wants to play dnd, but he's having trouble with the length. It took us three meets, each lasting about 8 hours, to clear a dungeon. There was little combat and it was mostly players talking to each other and doing checks based on the dungeon, like trapfinding, history and so on.

I asked him what his problem with it was and that's what he said, which gives me the idea that he's a modern gamer in the sense that he just wants to eat up content and be given an easy way out. every single time. Like, the boss fight lasted around 18 rounds. he was trapped under the baddie for 8 of those rounds and instead of getting out from under, he just kept attacking her, literally I told him he was trapped under her and with a str check he could be freed, but instead he just kept taking the disadvantage attack and ending his turn. He was expecting to slice her head off with his 6 foot blade while being trapped under her and I just couldn't let him do that. his rolls weren't even good enough for such a feat.

I guess moreso I want a way to engage the faggot so he's not just all angry and bored when he can't be fucking superman all the time.

you could try with a carrot and stick approach.
the carrot is that you'll let them get advantage on attacks more easily, and let them know that.
attacking with disadvantage would be 2 steps worse than their usual, not just one.
the stick, is a stick. you hit him with the stick if he touches his phone during the game.

Do you have massive HP bloat or something?? And besides that, 3 sessions of 8 hours for one fucking dungeon is ridiculous. Unless that dungeon is the size of a city filled to the brim with content. Perhaps cut down some of the content/combat? That way the stupid decisions would be made less/have less impact.

Well the extra 8 rounds was our powerhouse being trapped under the boss and one of our mages being sapped to shit by a necro-minion.

I'm trying to make combat more unforgiving, but not impossible. The other players were mostly okay with it, and the boss hp was at 120, which is a lot I know, but the mages have a tick to drop 20 dmg a round.

The dungeon was just something I generated just in case, seeing as the players were close to the entrance. It was not huge, less that 15 rooms, they were just... doing a whole lot of nothing, I guess. I'm content to sit there and listen, to mediate and all, and the length doesn't bother me, it's just that I didn't lead them to the dungeon, they went there of their own accord and then probably felt that they HAD to clear it, which they didn't.

There's no underlying plot yet, as I'm trying to get the feel for all of them. Perhaps this is the problem?

They weren't empty, there were 5 puzzles, only 2 of them were required, the other 3 rewarded them.

There were 3 fight rooms, one was avoidable.

There were 4 loot rooms behind secret walls that they completely missed.

Sure though, making it smaller is probably a good idea though. Just feels like they need a lot or they'll just go blazing through these places. Like, they're clear the 5 rooms and be all like "Okay, well, what next?"

plot, a short rest, and more plot to rocket them to the next floor.
the 5e adventuring day is built around 4-6 encounters with a short rest in between, right? you can have your 2-3 combats in a small dungeon, and then a running battle going out, or whatever works with your plot.

Like, I don't want you to have the wrong idea about me, Most players I have say the games were the best thing they've played it, not that that means anything. They're always laughing and having a good time. and when I try to get critiques from them, there's only good words, to my dismay.

Frankly I think that the FS is a good thing and that every Sorcerer path should have an expanded spell list. It gives them roughly the same number known as a bard, while limiting their versatility by forcing them to take spells that are thematic to their origins, and puts them on-par with the number of spells/day the wizard can prepare while not giving them nearly the sheer bredth of that class' potential spellbook.

I can accept being wrong, but I don't feel that I am, for the simple reason that the dungeon WAS boring and empty. Instead of telling the players there was nothing, I showed them and allowed them the freedom of choice. Now where I can be wrong in my decision is giving them money and goblins to fight, but when my players and on a hill, and I quote this, looking on to the landmark and hyping this thing up with "Look at this huge chapel... It must be filled with some clergy but, it's on fire... Perhaps they were driven out? were they raided? Did they leave any goods" and to have them simply go in and look around and say "Oh, well, it's completely empty, there's nothing here. guess this place means shit all. time to go shit around in a town killing shopkeeps"

That's fair enough, I like the idea. Though I also like how an expanded spell list is most useful for giving you bread and butter spells at lower levels. My life domain favoured soul may be perfectly happy Palpatine-ing shit up with Witch Bolt but Cure Wounds keeps his list grounded in life and healing.

Funilly enough I've seen a prety nice table for the wild mage where you roll to get your expanded spells, I think that fits really well thematically.

Another group I played in also let sorcerers learn spells cast on them with a successful Arcana check. They could know a number of these spells equal to 1/2 their level and could forget old ones to learn new ones.

Spells not on the sorc spell list had the arcana check made a disadvantage.

We also basically cleared an entire dungeon, went from level 6 to 7, and had about 7-8 combat encounters during the session though. I think that other guy is doing it wrong and blaming the players.

You sound like a decent guy, you are just having a minor problem (not even really a problem) with one player. Keep in mind that on tg we get burned often by people describing 'that guy' at their table only to learn later the poster is the actual 'that guy'. You are going to get some probing pushback here.

I'm just suggesting that one possibility is that it isn't working for that one player. It may very well still be great for everyone else.

Consider that 'that guy' doesn't have to be a complete dip. It can simply be the odd player out who wants a different game from what everyone else does. In this case everyone else seems to be happy and having good times, he is not. It is very possible that if you changed to fit him you would alienate everyone else.

Some times, even if he is a good guy, the odd man out is the odd man out.

You don't have to kick him or suggest he leave though. He hasn't been disruptive yet has he? So long as that does not happen then there is no reason to try and move him out, let him stick around and see if he adapts.

What you may want to do is look for ways to help him adapt. Can you find ways to give him a bit more spotlight during these long down times that he seems to dislike? That might be a decent fix for you.

My best advice would be to trust your gut instinct, the first thing that comes into your head is what you run with.

So your players have thrown off the rails and are freewheeling, you need something for them to do.

The first monster that comes into your head attacks them, then build off it.

Orc? Raiding party in advance of the new chief's invasion.
Goblin? A Hobgoblin has taken over the tribe and is using them to get rich.
Doppleganger? The inhabitants of this village are mysteriously vanishing and being replaced.
Awakened Tree? A renegade Druid has gone insane and is using his nature magic to burn towns, destroy crops etc.

Keep a few ancillary hooks in mind for this kind of thing, there's no shame in having the outline of a backup plot you can launch into at any time.

Vengeance Paladin and Fiend Patron Warlock also have the potential to match up well.

If you're going paladin/warlock though, you only need 2 paladin levels for Divine Smite with Warlock spell slot shennanigans, so you can fluff it however you want; say you're just a beefy warlock who channels his eldritch power through his melee strikes.

Better smites in general. A full paladin gets 1 lvl 5 smite per day at 17th lvl, a Pally/Warlock can use 2 lvl 5 smites per short rest at 11th level.

How does your group handle cycling players in / out?

On a full night, we have 7 players, and 1 DM (me). It's hard as shit to get everyone meeting with any regularity. Our solution to this, is next session to build/purchase/acquire a guildhall of sorts, and for the group to develop their own "guild" that has members etc.

I'm working that into the setting, where there are bands bozos, and there are Officially-Recognized-by-the-Crown-Guilds. This should help with the appearance and disappearance of players from one session to the next, but does that forever condemn our group to 1-shot adventures that can be done in a single session?

I liked the new class and cantrip options (GFB is my best friend now). The new backgrounds were neat but most did not appeal to me much. The new ghostwise halfling is great for a cleric or rogue halfling build, talking to people telepathically and all. I am actually pretty cool with there not being too much content being constantly pumped out for the game because it doesn't get smashed with bloat as a result. Mages, for example, tend to suffer from major bloat with retarded spell options. I don't have an issue with more spells, however, I have an issue with way too many spells because then you run into spells being either useless or overpowered to the point of lunacy.

A book focusing on feats would be a better idea because as it stands right now the feats aren't impressive enough to take them over ability score increases for the most part.

I like how the bulk of the releases have been about campaigns and you can use the concepts and creatures of those campaigns in other games and you also have the setting for other areas laid out, but on the whole I think 5th edition is doing a better job than previous editions in terms of having a slower but more competent release schedule.

Far from a perfect game, but it is doing enough right that I still like it more than most other RPGs on the market so far.

The DM literally had us jumping out of a hole for a fair portion of time, which the checks were not that easy to make, only to find out the whole thing was pointless and we were just hallucinating for no apparent reason. Same here. We have a new guy DM, and we always get hit, even by CR 1/2 creatures even though no one has an AC under 16.

Also, I have +11 Athletics, but somehow everyone breaks grapple immediately, every enemy hits for max damage, and every enemy has an AC of 18 or up.

Yeah. Over the course of the week, I've been explaining to him the idea of bounded AC, and how the stats don't increase as much in 5th versus how it used to be.

He's trying to make it more intense, so he's just blanket increasing stats across the board for all the monsters (AC, Abilities, etc.). Been trying to explain how throwing in more monsters, or making tactical decisions in terms of the arena will get more mileage.

He's doing surprisingly well at roleplaying, and improving some things, but otherwise everything else is pretty railroadey (Godlike NPCs, certain magic doesn't work randomly, Tower of challenges where each floor is beefed up monsters).

I have a DM who does not use a screen who is a better DM than the other group i mentioned earlier. Despite not using a screen i feel every fight is winnable with the right strategy and a bit of luck, and i have only fallen to 0 once, and that was because fuck green dragons. Point blank breathe weapon on a dragon sorcerer is no fun. The other group literally feels like a blood bath every session. I fell to 0 HP 3 out of 4 sessions and i have technically died twice.

Eventually I took over DMing and decided to teach him a lesson; first I almost TPKd the party with some carefully positioned mooks using carefully selected mundane items, then I almost handed them a TPK again with a single enemy NPC of the same level as the party but designed specifically to give them a hard time and placed in an environment that gave him the advantage.

It didn't really work, since the result was I got stuck as DM, but to this day my players still talk about the NPC they encountered once and nicknamed "The Predator".

So, the party after being attacked by scouts, tracked the scout's footprints to an abandoned stronghold, avoided a sleeping bear, climbed up through a hole in the towers, fought and ran from some violet fungus and then fought three bandits, killing two of them and tying up the Orc that surrendered.

If they are going to take the Orc to town for justice, I'm going to have some of the voluntary militia escort her out of town to a greater authority.

Apparently an easy way to make a party of half orcs not kill a Orc bandit is making her female and making her cry when her lover is killed.

So, the only encounters I have for next week is if they explore the room, there's a box with one of the bandit's hands in it, as a zombie hand. Oh and the creepy scarecrow that disappeared earlier is going to be standing in their home when they get back.

I'm having trouble making a bigger picture quest thing. I might throw in some reference to go up to the glacier or make a goblin encampment pop up. I already got the party involved once by just, having something attack them out of the blue, so I don't want to do that again.

I didn't end up showing them the map, so I theoretically could add a buttload of adventuring sites to it.

Any ideas?

Zombie apocalypses don't really work in settings where zombies don't transmit.

The witch could've been the one who originally animated that one bandits hand. That could be why the bandits knew to check the shack.

I'll mess around with the idea. I thought the witch would be dead originally. I need to take a look at the MM and see what CRs would be good for level 1-2. Maybe I could have something dreadfully evil happen at the temple in town, as part of the witch's curse.

In my game zombies don't transmit, but there's a region of the world where a necromancer bound all spirits from leaving, causing everyone who died to return as some manner of undead. Pretty much zombie apocalypse 24/7 for several centuries. It can be done.

I've played pathfinder for a while now, and every new book introduced disgustingly overpowered shit for casters while simultaneously nerfing an already shitty martial with errata, then there's all the optional rules and systems nobody actually uses because it isn't core. And every single book I have to deal with my favorite things being rendered invalid, or a million new things I have to fiat to avoid raping my campaign.

When the only good things you can find are third party, and therefor might as well not exist, "meh" is a fucking godsend.

Man I draw up maps on 27x11 inch grid paper for almost every location the party will be, write up interesting descriptions for new areas sure you can improv it but sitting and writing one out almost guarantees it will be better, give the players a little player journal to remind them whos who and whats what between sessions and have que cards for myself to make sure I remember important things.

The way I see it, DMing is a trade you gotta put the work in, practice it and the more you put into it the more you get out. So long as you don't railroad. But good maps never go to waste.

That was the closest thing I could think of, but the cantrips learned from the "boss monsters" would have to be the more offensive ones I think.

I forget what the class and book was called (Book of Arcanum I think?) that the first iteration was from, but I know that it was actually a semi-effective build, not terribly OP but pretty fun and flavorful.

I'm preparing Princes of the Apocalypse for my group this week. Does anyone have advice for organizing Red Larch. There are 21~ different buildings in town each with an NPC or two with different rumors. How do I keep this all straight in my head?

Anyone make amendments to the rules that seem a little "Out there"?

I mess with the Death Throws by letting a player stay up and conscious, with a level of fatigue, if they get healed before they make their first saving throw. I also do a fucked up version of point-buy where you roll for how many points you get. 5d6 is usually what I have them roll. re-roll 1s.

We also used to do 4d6 take highest 3, but people started showing up with 18, 18, 16, 16, 14, 12, so we stopped that.

I agree, but it can be hard to assign numeric value to something like that without it feeling arbitrary. Of course, being a GM is a position of arbitration so I guess at the end of the day that's not exactly much of a complaint.

Are there any good tools that have been made into apps? I'd like to use a tablet to view the Book PDFs and quickly find spells and monsters in them, so other tools like encounter builders and some random generators would be pretty neat.

My sister (older than me) is joining the game that I run. She has never played D&D and her closest experience to an actual Tabletop RPG is Diablo II. She wants to be a cleric, but I used to make crazy sub-opt builds in 3.5. I therefore have no clue how to make a new-player friendly cleric since I told her I'd make her first character for her.

Don't do it for her, help her make her own sheet. Spend time explaining some of the basics to her, this way when she gets to the table and you hand her sheet to her she isn't totally lost. Also, learning proper character building is an important skill regardless.

You don't really need to be optimal in 5e unless the rest of your party is doing it to the extreme.

I don't have any friends and I'm not good with strategy, I'm really just kind of annoying in my personality. I'm dumb and I talk too much and I am silly in the things that I do.

To make up for my shortcomings, I want to prepare a few characters of various classes and races so that I can come in and just ask what they need, instead of bringing in my characters. I need to do my best to be a tolerable addition to the group.

I'm currently in a pathfinder group where 2 other players don't know even the most basic rules because they never bothered to read the book or make their own characters. A 3rd player made the characters for them along with himself and of course he's full munchkin trying to abuse every fucking splat and 3rd party book out there for everyone.

Cleric is rough coz there's so many choices, but text her all the races and domains and ask if anything sticks out as interesting. I.e. Knowledge is a good investigator, life is a healer, war is a melee combatant (or ranged), etc etc.

Once she picks up on one just ask her questions about how she conceives of her character.

if you are, make her a generic life cleric, and let her re-do it later.
with half an hour to the game, maybe you could let her build a background for her character.
getting the players to 'reminisce about their old adventures' usually works for me.

That's funny you mention that. I'm usually the DM, but we decided to let one of our friends give it a try. I suggested that we try point buy system, for balance purposes. Everyone voted nay. I missed the session where everyone rolled characters and their stats, so when I showed up to play everyone already had their stats and I had to roll mine: 18, 17, 16, 16, 14, 10

Now they think my character is OP, even though I'm playing the character mentioned above. After feats, and stat increases at level 5 I have

>20 Strength
>17 AC
>+11 to Athletics, +9 to Acrobatics

Now the monk in the group keeps wanting to try and fight my character because he thinks I'm OP and wants to prove his can beat mine in a fight smh.

Those are pretty much your best options as far as being a grappler in this game. It's more about battlefield control and having fun than doing damage.

I hate the standard point buy system. Makes character that have MAD kind of suck in anything that doesn't involve their 2-3 attributes. At least with a roll system or my homebrew pointbuy you get a mix of hilariously weak characters and someone who had 30 and playing a fighter.

That's a decent start, but be sure that you still have some interest in what you're playing. If they need a Wizard but you don't wanna be one, you're not doing anyone any favors by playing something you don't enjoy.

When we were playing 3.5 one time I decided to play a fighter. Got God roll (we re-rolled 1s, didn't re-roll any of mine) and rolled a fighter up with 18, 18, 18, 15, 14. Straight outta the box with everyone there. He was a fucking machine. I kind of miss the great things that the 4d6 take highest 3 did, but I understand why people hate it.

I was rolled 18, 18, 16, 16, 14, 12 and played a monk, spoiler: the fighter with only ONE 18 outclassed me hard, and at the same time the druid and the cleric with only two 16s outclassed him hard too.

3.5 had a lot of problems.

5e is way less severe with stats than 3.5, sure there're still SAD characters, but point buy doesn't harm anyone unless odd builds like PM/GWM bladelock that never were intended. I mean, monk, one of the MADest classes still gets everything they want with point buy.

Tiefling can get now +2 to Dex
Also is not like having AC 14 and +2 to hit is going to hurt your monk at all, AC 14 is pretty good for monk.

AC 14 is the sweet spot where melee becomes a bad idea. 15 would be passable, but 14 will get you killed.

I'm under the belief that monks have a special power from the PHB itself that makes rolls against them shitty. I have never seen a DM crit a Monk ever, though I've only ever played with like 3 monks. Not seriously mind you, but it is kind of weird.

my interest in the d&d and the lore is there, and my interest in characters stems from my desire to build their history. I can get into any race and class so long as I can come up with a story I want to enact.

For instance, I am not particularly good with strategy so I'd make a good fighter so that I can just go in and smash things up a bit, but the thing is that I am, myself, very gentle and silly. I'd rather be kind and avoid fighting because I will feel for any of the other characters, even inherently evil ones. I'M THE PROBLEM HERE ANON, but I don't want to be alone forever. Other options for powerful one hit abilities: death monk (late in the game), elemental monk, death cleric, fiend warlock for hurl through hell (but this is late in the game), psion, aaaaaaaaaaand I can't think of anything else.

I would just go paladin 2 and then blade singer the rest of the way and ask if you can get unarmed strike damage as the monk instead of weapon proficiency. Not martial arts per se but just scaling unarmed damage. or whatever other caster could work too. Or just stick straight paladin I guess.

Currently DMing a game with a brand new player in the party who isn't getting into it at all.
He's pretty much a normie, and his character is a half-orc bard who's a 'rapper'.
He doesn't really anything so far other than make stupid one liners and generally seems bored outside combat.
Any ideas for a rap-themed sidequest to get him more engaged in the role-playing aspect?
