Me and a friend are trying to make our own simple system. We came up with this little skill list.
(Fantasy setting)
• Knowledge Skill (Arcana, History, Medicine, Nature, Religion)
These are mostly used to get and recall informations. Medicine can be used to make better use of healing kits and such. Sometimes rolls are not needed (if you have X arcana, you know that monster X is weak to X).
• Social Skills (Deception, Diplomacy, Insight, Intimidation, Persuasion)
Nothing to explain here.
• Physical Skills (Acrobatics, Athletics, Perception, Quick Hands, Stealth)
Perception is used to investigate and search stuff too, not only to "hear and see".
• Combat Skill (Melee, Ranged, Throwing)
Nothing to explain here either.
If there's something you want to do that is not included in the skill list, you have two choices. Let's say you want to craft a weapon. There's no real stat related to the crafting skill, so:
a) you try anyway, with a roll with high chance of failure (you make a really bad weapon, or a normal one if you're lucky)
b) you learn crafting, and you automatically make a normal weapon, no need to roll
If there's a stat that can be applied, you can use it. Let's say your char wants to QUICKLY (keyword here, because in normal situations a roll is not needed) make a complex knot on a rope. In this case you roll your Intelligence (you recall how to make knots, or you are smart enough to figure it out, etc.)
I know it's not much but what do you think? Should I include/delete some skills?
