Also I suppose that I'll answer my pointed questions, if anyone has free time (hint I don't, I'm about to start a 10 hour shift) we could maybe use a glossary pastebin for newcomers.

Not really, I don't even have time to consume the ones I like which are possibly over rated (the dice tower) even on 1.5x or 2x speed there's just too much youtube to watch.

Worker placement, I can't say why, I just like putting out guys and then getting stuff back. I like how people cut each other off and it becomes a game about planning and resource denial.

>Cult of the new, or tried and true?
Honestly I'm more of a tried and true, mostly because there aren't newer wargames that absolutely kill it. I'm more likely to play Richard Borg than say 1812 (not that I don't like these newer games, I just lean away from cult of the new a lot)

Like I find myself reaching for KoT instead of newer fillers, or Caverna or Alien Frontiers instead of say Versailles (which I haven't bought, but it looks nifty).

I guess I'm just "falling behind" because I don't have enough time to play the games I have, let alone these new games that I don't have.

For one they're a little out of date, and for starters, personal preference will dictate what you enjoy.

Honestly it's not difficult to get into boardgaming, they're games. They're designed to be played and enjoyed. Obviously I don't suggest you jump right in with Terra Mystica, but you could if you were so inclined.

It's not like a very skill intensive talent, like fencing while breakdancing or something. Or ballet.

Just get out there and game :)

I don't think I've seen Paul Darcy being mentioned in these threads yet, his playthroughs are usually full length, so you can really get a feel on how the games will play out during a session.

My group usually has atleast 4-5 players, so can't answer this. I'll say my mom has been thoroughly enjoying beating my ass in two-player Wings of War though, so probably that since it works just as well at 3 as it does with 2.

I love empire building games, especially ones that at the end you have really gone from nothing to a great civilization. Even in games like Caverna I love that park. Start with a dinky dugout in a mountain and a shitty forest and at the end you have dozens of farm animals, corps, and a dug out mountain with ore and ruby mines. I love being able to look at the final board and be satisfied.

I would say neither. I'll play whatever so long as it looks and plays well. I have an enjoy Carcassone, Catan, and Cosmic Encounter as well as X-COM, Legendary, and Specter Ops.
That being said I think people are getting better at making board games so with quality in both components and quality going up my collection is going to be getting progressively newer and newer.

I can't really think of what I would like to play with three players that I wouldn't prefer to play with either two or four. But I guess I'd say something like Level 7: Omega Protocol. Overloard and two players each controlling two guys. Probably a bit less AP with the people I play with and there is less miscommunication between the human players. That or maybe Legendary.

Empire building, tactics, strategy. Everything that has a spacial aspect and involves fighting, really.

I like Dominant Spiecies, GoT, Neuroshima: Hex. TI3 looks nice but I haven't played it etc.

Why? I think because it resembles war/fighting most closely though some games are tactics only while some go more in depth. I like games that are hard to master (but easy to get in are optional)

I also have a thing for card games. Absolutely loved Dominion, and previously mtg (but I haven't been playing mtg since at least 2005).

I would say neither but probably more "tried and true" then "cult of the new" I have to see everything in action before I buy and see the opinions so buying something just because it's new wouldn't be me. I also prefer to "exploit" one game instead of exploring different new (to me) games.

I didn't play anything dedicated to 3-players but Pandemic with 3 players is nice, 3-5-8 (the classic card game) would be something "strictly" in the 3 player area.

Hey guys!

I have an idea for a board game and wanted know from you which setting you'd personally prefer: Fantasy and magic or space and sci-fi?

The board consists of a hexgrid, whth each player starting on sides opposite of each other and control their piece. Their piece is either a mage with special magic attacks and abilities or a spaceship with special high-tech, sci-fi attacks and abilities. There are resources on some hexes in the form or mana sources or planets depending on the setting. In combat you can attack with your mage/ship with which you can also send out creatures/drones to attack with or for you. You claim the resource hexes and defend them while at the same time attacking your opponent and his resource gathering sites (mana collector/refinery). And during the game you can learn new spells/abilities by researching scrolls/technologies which costs resources. So the gameplay itself translates fairly well to either setting

What would you personally prefer? Sci-fi or fantasy?

Long term planning.

If you lock into fantasy, then go through all the other steps, then you realize "wow I did a lot of work to sell this, but nobody is noticing my game because summoner wars and mage wars" you'd have to change your theme and then rename things, redesign pieces, art, etc etc.

It'd be pretty shitty to ignore something because "sales comes last"

I voted for fantasy because I prefer fantasy, but if the end goal is "make money" then it's wise to look to the market.

Of course you could take a long time through the development cycle and then there could be a handful of sci-fi "wars" games like summoner/mage wars and then you'd be screwed anyways.

Also >>43332022 is right, there are a lot of fantasy titles already, and the two games the anon mentioned are not only very similar to yours, they are very good and popular. I don't think either of them have a "defend a territory" mechanic though, so that's a plus. If you want an established target audience that will probably like it but have atleast two huge competitors, go with fantasy. If you want to try and target an untested audience that may or may not like it, then go with anything else.

Of course, if you don't plan on selling it though, then just do whichever you like. Even if you do plan on selling it, making a game you don't really like the theme of will just feel like a slog.

And I'm being serious with the magic mechs in space suggestion by the way. So, sci-fi for me I guess.

I'm not sure how to answer this. I have no idea what common genres are in relation to board games. I do know I like elegant, simple, while still strategic rules best, but I'll settle for complex rules that allow multiple competing strategies before simple, easy to solve rules. I also tend to consider a good game hook and rules/story integration more important than all but the worst rules deficiencies.

Whatever is best. I don't care if it's 100 years old if it's good. That said, I find myself gravitating toward mostly games newer than 20 years old.

Not a lot of games run well below 4 players, IMXP. Castle Panic or Ascension would probably be my best bets. Does anyone know any good games that run well with only 2?

Targi, almost every wargame, pretty much anything Rhado reviews tbh

"2 or only 2" is such an over saturated category, I mean, yes almost all my gaming is 2 players exclusively, but it's not exactly a facet of board gaming that's underdeveloped or under-explored.

Even if it was sci-fi, for me the gameplay comes first followed closely by player count.

However, many people like sci-fi and hate fantasy, and vice versa, as has been pointed out, there's a lot of fantasy which sounds very similar to this hypothetical game.

Assuming I was 100% going to buy this game, I would probably buy the sci-fi one, because I already have summoner wars, so maybe I meet someone who hates fantasy and refuses to play fantasy, so I play this with them.

If it's good I'll probably buy it anyways, but I would prefer it to be fantasy.

I described just the very, very basics of my idea. Not to badmouth Summoner Wars or anything because it's a really good game and I like it a lot but I'd say my idea offers more tactical options and depth at the moment. Though one could argue that's due to a lack of streamlining since my game is still in its baby shoes. Could be that I'll need to cut some of the more complex aspects. Anyway, the games play very differently. The resource claiming and gathering alone differ so much and involve tactical aspects because you have to consider positioning among other things.

And at the moment it can be played with 2-6 players.

Both. I built my early collection based on tried and true classics that my friends can get silly with. And while I actively avoid games that I see as getting overhyped, I do hype for a few new games without really waiting to see if it has staying power with the community. I also have the benefit of a meetup where I've learned about at least a few games, new and old, that helped me make/rethink a purchasing decision.

- Three Kingdoms Redux.
- Greenland, Neanderthal as the above poster said.
- Florenza (theme as dry as balls and it takes forever but still)
- Innovation
- Glass Road (good at all player counts)
- La Granja (good at all players counts)
- Le Havre
- Lewis & Clark
- Troyes

I find three to be the best player count in general; anything more adds downtime for little return and two-player does weird things to most designs (being zero-sum)

I love not having to read an entire RP book, get several other people to do so, then sit there making a character for 4 hours and hope I didn't forget one of the sixty niggling rules that are mentioned once for a change. Just grab a hero, possibly grab a deck of class cards, jump in and start having fun. Exploration, social actions and combat are all really fun.

I don't think I own more than one new game and it's a recent "expansion" to Summoner Wars which isn't new. My games are, chronological:

>Descent Shadow of Nerekhall
>TI3 Shattered Empire
>Summoner Wars Alliances

Arkham Horror. The other games on that list can accommodate three but you lose a lot of depth or thinks get janky (such as the sometimes Castle/Mine tile in Burgundy; or the 2vs1 game in Summoner Wars where the third player controls two decks).

So update. Working on a racial overhaul of the Winnu since they are easily the weakest race I've ever played. Which is weird because their design feels like there are such things as Twilight Imperium tournaments and a winner was asked to make up a racial ability then they slapped random backstory that makes no sense onto it. I say this because all their abilities feel like "Yeah but I don't wanna!" the way TCG tournament players bitch and moan about extremely specific things in the meta and want direct counters.

I'm also having a lot of fun with Summoner Wars but looking into creating a mostly diceless (possibly deckless) variant rule system. So far, my gf and I allow a rule of taking the minimum average. For example, if you have 2 Attack Value and the opponent's Hit points are 1, you can just "take 1".

(semi) coop because you can play them as gateway/intermediate games or alone if you've still managed to scare away your gaming group. ofc you'll want to play competetive games with meta-bullshitting and gameplay depth one day but more often than not board gaming depends on a group that's not as geeky as your average fa/tg/uy. so accessability de facto plays a huge role.

doesn't matter as long as it's good. but it seems to me that in the last couple of years the game pieces have become more polished which is always a good thing.

through the ages. you don't lack any gameplay features (pacts), downtime is not as bad as in a 4P game and it's a fucking good game, disregarding all the BGG hype.

Having a diceless SW means several older cards have no real abilities, as their identity comes from automatically taking hits, giving hits, what dice # they roll, reducing attack results, having all attacks miss if one die misses, triggering only on hits, etc etc.

I can see it being half done with alliances, but with the older stuff, good luck. Not the same game anymore by a wider margin.

For co-ops the usual suggestions are Pandemic, and Forbidden Island or Desert. I'd like to add Flash Point to that. Either Mysterium or Codenames for "one guy gives clues, the others get it completely wrong". Mysterium has a slightly lengthy setup time, but has really pretty pictures. Codenames lets you do competitive plays. I want to say Wings of War, but I have no idea if the card versions are still in print, since those include a lot of planes in each box.

It's really hard to pick one, but: worker placement (action selection). I love having a limited pool of options to work with, optimizing them as best you can, planning out your moves multiple turns ahead, and then having to sit there on other players' turns stressed out about whether they will throw a wrench into your gears or not. Some games that really embody this genre for me are Keyflower and Tzolk'in.

Other genres that immediately came to mind were card drafting, area control and hidden roles/deduction.

Ok /tg/ can you recommend any games with a strong "economic" factor? Winning should be done through investing or building efficiently, without too much randomness. Basically I'm thinking of Transport Tycoon or Theme Hospital/Tropico/Zeus in board game form.

So in summary you want light/medium weight area control, cosmic encounter, tile laying, light/medium resource management, light/medium worker placement, amerithrash/thematic/ameritrash, medium weight worker placement, deckbuilder, co-op and dice chucker.

I don't really believe there are "10 perfect games" to start a collection with, but you definitely want a rounded collection if you're just starting out, and if you keep them light/medium weight they're family friendly so you'll never get rid of them. You can always pull them out when non-gamers are over to enjoy, even if your go-to game becomes Diplomacy or GoT or something similarly long and involved.

I'll add to what you say in pointing out that their racial tech was overpowered and had to be needed. Not sure which copy you bought, chick, but the original offers unlimited stall potential, while always giving you the flexibility in which resource you want. Not even the little green men can stall two turns in a row. Before the nerf, the winnu were considered top tier.

I got the level that contained every single thing for pixel tactics. Lots of cards. Yeah a lot of money and not the best choice of what to spend it on, but that was a year ago when I was in the big swing of getting into board games and building my collection so I let myself get overhyped. And for the TEK, I got two copies of the expac, a base game, and some extra tokens. I'm giving one of the copies of the expac and the extra tokens to a friend who already has the base game. So I think $50 for that is a good deal.

Bones 3 is still cheaper than the prices from their website. The average dragon in the Bones collection on their website costs $15, and the average dragon from the Bones 3 KS is $10 for a dragon. Plus I had to get Ma'aldrakar. I paid $550 (recounted) for 306 models so about $1.80 per model, with many of them being big, 12 of which are big dragons, and one fuck huge dragon. dat nigga was $60. Actually I've been looking at old cards. Originally I was going to package a huge disclaimer that it's Alliances only but now I'm refining this. Abilities always still trigger according to dice, that's actually in from the beginning (due to Phoenix Fallen). PRECISE is that you do the damage but you also roll the attack value as you would before. The Tundra Guild has modifications. We already have a solution worked out for that as we ran into Ice Walls needing 4+ (50%) and anything that crits on 5-6 still rolls. After several games so far, this is still extremely balanced.

I've learned why SW in particular is diminished by dice in particular while doing this. Some games can handle dice but those games have asymmetrical abilities and comebacks. Summoner Wars is balanced on a knife edge (kudos) and thus feels like League of Legends. I somehow mean that as a compliment, don't read into it too hard. The comparison is as thus: a lucky crit in a game like LoL means you snowball into losing unless your team also gets a lucky crit. Playing SW has shown this exact same phenomena. When I track lucky or unlucky rolls, almost always the person who had 4 or more higher wins even when the other's tactics were superior. Makes sense given that's plenty to take out extra units (or not).

No. I have the original racial but it's errata'd in Shards so we can't use it. I completely understand how amazing they are with the tech. Their "all-over-the-place-ness" actually helps that tech. However, the Once Per Round limitation really hampers them and they play almost entirely vanilla now, like a gimped Yssaril. From what I see on veteran TI3 gamer forums, the Winnu are largely regarded (now) as the weakest race in the game by far. This is popular opinion but I tend to agree and even if somehow not true, they still have the most boring as far as my group is concerned. We've been testing mine affinity with them.

For the SW stuff, sounds really interesting. I enjoy what hazards the dice chance brings, but it sounds like you have found a means to enjoy it all the more with personal tweaks. Keep on trucking with the personal project, and keep exploring the other SW stuff. I highly recommend the other master set, as well as: both 1st and second summoner jungle elves and cloaks faction decks

And yeah my gf loves the Sand Cloaks so most likely we'll pick up some of that stuff. Noticed the Deep Benders are the easiest to flesh out apparently. Alliances + Master Set + one reinforcements pack all contain them which is interesting.

I would really recomend second summoner fallen kingdom over the original. Vampires, warlocks, ghouls, and the event cards are a lot stronger and more diverse than zombie, skeleton archers (which are annoying as all fuck, ill givem that), and the slow ass reaper.

The swamp mercs are also really easy to flesh out. Master set+alliances+reinforcement+ the merc summoner deck. Any other mercs you get through reinforcement packs are just extra gravy, we hardly use'em.Ralluls commons and champions however are really fun.

Ret Tallus becomes hilarious with cultists and skeleton archers resurected, but having a summoner who can heal himself is just amazing. Everytime my friend picks them I huddle into a corner and cry. There are so many ways they fuck up your expectations. Warlocks summoned when eh has no magic, vampires getting through my defenses, event cards summoning things far away from the summoner (unlike ret talluses ability and event cards), and assassinating you. And when you try to trade with Mad Sirian, he just damages the attacker...and undoes the damage you dealt if you cannot deal more than 1 damage. With automatic hits, i can see his tankiness diving severely, but with dice rolls, he is terrifying to take down while he assaults you repeatedly in turn.

I guess...why not get both?

Also, you will love muglugg and how his own way of spreading that jungle around. Both swamps orcs are fun as balls.

Super Dungeon Explore Legends is going strong, while Blackout seems to have slowed down to a snail's pace at 95k.

I think it's a great selection apart from Munchkin, if you want a silly card game with lots of "take that" and cool art, I suggest epic spell wars of the battle wizard instead. Or a deck builder. Dominion, Thunderstone, Legendary, Ascension, all good, depending on the theme you may fancy the most.

Maybe I'd also drop carcassonne in favor of Ticket to ride, but that's just personal preference.

Help me /TG/-Wan-Kenobi! I'm curious about the fact that there are apparently 2 versions of Neuroshima Hex 3.0 - one by Z-Man and the other by Portal Games. The one from Portal Games has a "bug" - there's a printing error on one of the tiles from Borgo and I also think there's also an error in the amount of units in that army. Search in the bgg forums for details.

I don't know what this 2014 version is, but all the races work across the core versions. I picked up the game.around 2008-2009, and all races still work with that core set.

Again, no clue what the 2014 version is like, but the only difference between 2013's 3.0 was a drastic change in art style and graphic design. I miss the earlier, more cartoony look, but that fifth race is a lot of fun, you can even pull off an infinite combo for the win.

Honestly, this is my justification for Cthulhu Wars. I want minis. I want minis to paint. As far as minis go, CW is actually affordable given the sheer size and quality of their minis. And underneath, it's a good game to boot.

I'm about to host a spoopy boardgame party for my family and my mom invited a cute girl to join us! From what I've gathered, she's got minimal /tg/ experience, but specifically accepted the invite because she has always wanted to do it -- that puts a ton of pressure on me, because I'm the gamemaster of the house; I've tried my best to select a spread of games that will be approachable and offer a little bit of a hook to get her involved, but I have an hour to go to the store and buy anything additionally - so without further ado, please review my spread of games bellow:

>ZOMBICIDE (core + mall)
With the popularity of the walking dead, and the easily recognized concept, who wouldn't enjoy playing weapon toting Murder-Hobos?

Arguably Zombicide will take center stage in all of this, that is unless this chick really loves the fuck out of Munchkin Smashup (I know the gameplay can be quite addictive, and I've gotten my mom and two fem cousins hooked in one match)

Should I buy anything else? Should I focus on one of these more than the other? What do?

Also I will post a separate question for additional help on a specific game.

because of dubs, I humbly request some specific boardgame knowledge about ZOMBICIDE

If you read above, I'm having a casual boardgame night tonight (in less than an hour) and I'm scrambling to get everything ready. My number one concern? What type of game do I setup for Zombicide?!

ZomCid can be a highly customizable experience, and since I've bought it I have always struggled with keeping a decent balance between the non existent challenge of the objectives and the overwhelming hoards getting unfair advantages.

I've consulted the pre-canned adventures many times to help, but almost all of them are setup to play for HOURS and when you play for that long only to have a bitter defeat, it takes the wind out of my gamegroup's sails. In contrast to that, I have fabricated really small (between 2 and 4 tiles) maps with some very flavorful objectives; but all of those get steamrolled the minute someone finds an UBER weapon and then the game devolves into "how much longer until we win?"

Does anyone have any suggestions for the ZOMBICIDE scenario tonight? I want to have a moderate difficulty and nothing bigger than 4 tiles (any configuration).

For the record, I usually try to thin the items deck down, now that I have Mall-Crawl it adds redundant and or blatantly OP weapons. I also try to thin the zombie deck of the massively unforgiving cards, while trying to keep Toxic zombies a random but very dangerous encounter.

Should I just take toxic zombs and OP weapons out of the game all together, or should I just roll with ALL the cards?

Keep in mind I'm playing with a qt and I don't want to horribly dash her experience tonight so she will join us for more gaming in the future.

BTW I am not even going to try and hit on her, she's my mom's friend and I already promised myself that it's just the wrong neckbeard move here. That last part was a joke, I'm actually gay But she's androgynous so...

Thinly veiled "what is the most chit-heavy game?" ask. Okay so this is relevant: my gf got her copy of Cry Havoc! shipped to her (we were hoping for Siege and the Japanese Havoc engine game too but alas). This game looks fucking phenomenal.

It has 220 or so chits of little people, horses, mules etc. They have this nice, accurate 13th century Feudal Europe historical background booklet to explain why each chit has the stats it does. Then all the rules just make *sense*. Even when they seem more complex than you might be used to for modern games. Modern games ten to streamline x500 and cut a lot of math and BS. Of course one of the main ways is they put Combat Resolution Tables onto the dice in the form of glyphs.

In this game, you actually take your attack value(s) and pit them against the target's defense with integer division. Then find out that ratio and look up a table, roll for the effect. Example:

Sir Penrose with 26 attack and 8 defense is facing down 3 Man-at-Arms in melee each having 8 attack. They sum their attack value to 24, divided by Penrose's 8 (programmers here will note you always truncate the floating point in integer division). That gives a ratio of 3-1. So you find the "Against Mounted: 3-1" CRT. Then roll 1d10. Let's say I roll really well (lower is better) and get a 2. That's effect C: Defender retreats 1 hex (must not move adjacent to enemy).

Penrose must now back off to avoid the superior numbers of the three men-at-arms. It's quite elegant and fast.

I wish walmart still sold the base game of Smashup, I desperately need to restock atleast the core set... Cthulu set I already owned, and my OTHER playgroup (that now has it in their possession) hated the mechanics. I don't own Monster Smash, but it seems like it is too self-contained as an expansion and wouldn't interact well with munchkin at all.

Also, the only other game I have that I didn't list is Specter Ops, but I doubt this is a good casual game -- I wouldn't know that though, because I have yet to get my family interested in trying it with me.

Doesn't seem very halloweeny though...

Probably not going to have the broad appeal you're hoping for. That said, it's on-theme so it'll probably work so long as you make it an expedient play through and not let it slow down. Probably a better choice for a casual than Dead of Winter complexity-wise

Dead of Winter is pretty darn good. Definetly wears thin faster than battlestar galactica, but it's much stronger thematically and more fun for the first dozen plays or so. And it'll always be faster than BSG. I have a hard time picking between the two, and DoW is much, much more haloween-y. I suppose you could kinda replicate some of it with zombicide, but I think you'd only get about halfway there.

I don't think either FoD or CoH are too complicated to learn as you play, neither is super-involved, but they're both great for inducing paranoia and tension.

Think of FoD as a more tense, more thematic, and more haloween-appropriate specter ops. It's the game specter ops was basically made to mimic, since FoD had been out of print forever, but I don't think it's quite as good. Faster, punchier, and much more like playing a videogame, but not as succulent.

Also the monster smash pack generally meshes with other boxes better than the cthulhu pack does, and it's certainly more haloween-y, so yeah, maybe go with that.

Ok, Betrayal is a a thematic exploration game. In the game you and your friends will move pieces over tiles and open doors.

Opening a door involves flipping a tile from a stack and placing it connected to the door you openned. Think carcassone.

Exploring rooms gives you items, a sense of creepyness (eg one room is nothing but ash and is titled "the burned room") and omens trigger.

Like in akrham horror/eldritch horror going around does things, which flip over an omen deck which do various things (give you items, trigger events) such as "the wind rattles the trees very loudly, everyone who is by a window gets -1 sanity" etc etc.

At this point the game is coop based and you can give your friends items and stuff but you might not want to as you'll find out in a bit.

After a number of rooms have been revealed, a haunt event will trigger as the final haunt (you roll dice against a target number based on how many omens) then using the room that the active player was in you lookup which haunt has happened.

Here's where betrayal gets fantastic.

One player takes the haunt book and leaves the room, they read about their special rules.

Everyone else reads their special rules because they're now "the survivors" and are fighting the person who left.

What exactly happens in each haunt is very different, and each scenario is based on thematic classic b-horror movie, tropes like "ghost bride", "frakenstein", "witch wants to eat you" are all present.

There's a lot of niche interactions with the items which can do really cool things, kind of like Dead of Winter's crossroad cards. Betrayal will tell you a spooky story about going into a haunted house and spooky stuff happens.

If you read the haunt book ahead of time you will absolutely ruin the game for yourself.

I find that betrayal's ending resolution is less about random dice rolls and more about how the players work together. They read their rules, look at the layout of the house and plan their movements to try and achieve something.

Yeah the first half of randomly exploring is very similar, but when the shit hits the fan the survivors get to huddle up and scooby-doo their way out of horror.

All too often arkham is just chuck dice and maybe win

Arkham horror games run way too long, they're fucking directionless for the longest time as random shit happens, mostly it doesn't even make sense where monsters pop out of and what happens. Sure Betrayal is random, but when an event goes off the consequences are localized to specific thematic rooms, so it makes sense. Spooky shit happens where it should. EG the window example with the wind. If you're outside in a courtyard tile you get spooked, if you're in the basement nothing bad happens because you can't be spooked.

In arkham you walk into the library and a shoggoth dressed as a police officer eats your brains.

Setup time-> Betrayal you shuffle the tiles a bit
Arkham Horror -> ONE MILLION DECKS AN CHITS AND PIECES

Decision making: Arkham has none, you just collect resources until you fight the boss, going from random event to random event. In betrayal about halfway through the game you're given a clear goal, you then work with other survivors to achieve the goal. Arkham's missing that, you don't get a goal, you just close portals and bounce from random event to random event until the game ends. Maybe you win? Did you do anything meaningful to win? No, not really.

I mean, yeah, what you described happens, everyone huddles together to try and figure the solution out.
But if you have the right stuff to land a viable solution, it's pretty much always extremely obvious what you should be doing, and if not you're probably screwed. Every time I've played betrayal I kept wondering why the hell I was involved - there were never any interesting or meaningful decisions to make. It always either didn't matter or there was an obvious right move.

I'm not saying it can't be fun, but it's fun as a choose-your-own-adventure novel, not fun as a game.

Betrayal plays faster and better while doing the same general thing while being more accessible to nongamers.

That makes it strictly better in my opinion. Most people only know Cthulhu by passing name, not what a shoggoth is.

Everyone knows the betrayal monster because they're archetypes, you see them represented in Halloween decorations and costumes all over the place.

I think the biggest problem you might be having with Arkham is the theme is not sucking you in enough. Which is fine. No. All of this is incorrect. I've played 15 games and never lost a single one. 9 of those were with people who had never seen the game before. This is a game designed not to be won easily so let that sink in. There are strategies out the ass for winning and almost never do they involve fighting the Old One. Only my first ever game fought the Old One (Hastur, we won just barely) and we were hella prepared by accident just because we didn't know what the fuck we were doing with closing gates.

14 of my games were won by SEALING gates. This means earning a ton of clue tokens and if possible, Elder Signs. We always got at least 1 of those per game. So in a game, you need at least 20 clue tokens among all of you to win if you get 1 sign and never spend them on anything else. This is completely doable: look at characters who start with clue tokens. Immediately go for the double token spots when they appear via rifts. SNEAK past monsters early and KILL monsters late. If you can get Gloria, your time spent in other worlds is halved, meaning you're probably just winning the game. Especially if she gets Find Gate spell (enough players that start with random spells means she has it). Trade shit to optimize. ALWAYS have one player become the deputy via 2 gate tokens or 10 toughness. ALWAYS seek blessings.

If I'm Jenny Barnes, immediately take out a bank load. It means you will never have less than $24 on average in 8 turns, which is basically infinite dosh.

If you have the Psychologist, have her use up all the party's books while standing on the hospital tile. That way she can heal her sanity each turn (the books cost) and if she gets hurt from them, she gets health back too. Reading books gives spells, items and most importantly: clue tokens. With Jenny Barnes (loan etc), have her spam Unique Items shop constantly for as many badass books as possible. I once got one that had a hefty failure price but gave clue tokens and was infinitely reusable.

Have the party split up and meet back up to trade items/clues every 2 or so turns. Think of it like an actual investigation. The only time you're really fucked is when Nyralathotep is your Old One if Masks start appearing since they're 3x stronger than monsters in their tier. Just sneak until someone gets amazing weapon loadouts. Such as:

Enchanted blade (+4 magic)
.45 Pistol (+4 physical)
The two handed magic sword or the tommy gun
The rifle/shotgun
And especially make use of one-time shit like Dynamite and Holy Water. It vaporizes horrors. By late game, all our characters are chucking upwards 9+ dice at shit.

Use spells like Wither (or whichever the strong one was) dual handed and Dread Curse of Azathoth. Remember that if you pre-cast spells, you can then go into combat re-equipped with new weapons and stack bonuses. If you get caught by monsters on the Mythos Phase, you're stuck without pre-casts.

This game has a fuck TON of strategies.

I fucking hate that. It's actually the reason I never pledged any of the zombicide shit or Ghostbusters, got way too out of hand. Kickstarter exclusive stuff is fine, except when it's an actual gamepiece. People shouldn't have to either pay a bunch of money as a backer, or be forced to hunt them down and pay rape prices to scalpers after the fact.

How many did zombicide have? I think it was something retarded, like over 50 backer exclusive survivors.

Forgot to explain why you end up with $24 just from Jenny and a loan. Any character that can get +$1 per turn means that when they roll for bank loan, they have a 50% chance to fail. So they get +$1 per two turns. The loan gives 10. If you always have a deputy like you should, you might get this turn 4-5 if you're rushing it with gate tokens. That player also takes out a loan and starts racking up cash. Meaning you get $20 and $4 from Jenny's upkeep money on average. I left out the deputy's due to the midgame component and the chance that the dice hate you.

$24 is a game breaking amount of money among all players, plus other players can start with money and earn more.

The deputy is a necessity since it can teleport around the map basically just cheesing the game.

Only have a few games in, but I like it. The game is very quick, very clever, and the art is DAMN clean.
Caveats: It spends more time feeling like a puzzle than like a strategy game. Dice can and will fuck you. No one gets as much tech as I wish they did. Over a little too soon.

Specific advice I'm looking for is what number of zombie cards are a sweetspot between challenging but not unforgiving?

Should any weapons be taken out of the game because they're too OP? I vote Doug's dream is simply too overkilly, but it also is a lot of fun for the players to roll a pound of dice for a single attack.

So far I'm thinking of even limiting how much you can search in a single room, just to prevent people from turtling up until they find the right combination for the job -- but I worry that this dilerberately breaks the balance of the game (in favor of zombies) where a turtle strategy can backfire still and leave you objectiveless and dead if you're too greedy.

So I have an issue with my TI3: Shattered Empire pieces. Tons of them are massively offset, ruining some of the game (like domain counters and relics being marked) and orange both has at least 1 missing PDS and a melted Dreadnaught. Curious if anyone can share FFG customer service experience and maybe their steps for the best way to get stuff resolved?

Seems like this one just had bad printing and sprue-cutter offsets.
