Elvenoids are a big grouping of similar species. If you are to talk to actual elves they're going to tell you there are thousands of smaller groups, but most of the differences are too small to notice.
Humans, Orcs, Elves, Drow, etc. are in this group. My players have recently found out that elvenoids were created ~150,000 years ago. Not by a single god, but by numerous spirits, demigods, powers that be, etc. arriving at the same conclusion that the elvenoid shape was very good at killing each other. The differences there in being minor (creating drow, elves, orcs, humans, etc.). This then began the Seeker's War, a conflict where the spirits roughly divided themselves into four factions and had the elvenoids kill each other to settle disputes for millennia. Empires were built and fell during this period and it is still going on today, but muted. The four factions are aligned as NE, NG, LN, and CN. Currently in the setting the LN faction is in power, the NE faction having fallen into obscurity some 700 years ago (so still in living memory in elf terms). Elvenoids are kept from advancing by the fact their civilization collapses every few hundred years and everything of the old is attempted to be wiped out (then the spirits start pumping out new elvenoids for their factions).
Recently the continent, which up until this point only had elves on it, had halflings and goblinoids land on it's shores. Up until this point outside influence had been tossed away or merely didn't exist (most other humanoids haven't had civilization for more than 2-5k years). Halflings now have a country on the eastern shore and goblinoids have colonies dotting the south that have enslaved old remnants of the CN elvenoids.
So in summary, elvenoids were created by an esoteric non-deity driven religion for the purpose of killing each other for thousands of years to settle petty arguments.
Background done, now for BBEG.
