newb question: chaos space marine flamers worth taking? they are the same strength and AP as a bolter so it seems like you're really just playing points for a few more bolter hits, which doesn't seem like it's worth it. I know the template ignores cover but meh, are these things actually useful/fielded often?

If I take a hunter contingent (hunter cadre and stealth cadre), do I lose the warlord re-roll and combine-unit shooting bonuses if I take a Unbound units?

I want to use a standard army and then add in a unit of remora stealth drones without filling out a standard FOC for them.

Flamers are good aganist targets with a usually bad armor value so ignoring both armor and cover will net more kills than the equivalent in bolters.

Their problem is mainly the delivery of the template which is why plasma or other special weapons are usually better, since that footslogging/rhinologging a unit of marines just to remove some gaunts from a cover is usually not worth it, but they can be fine on terminator units

They have several competitive lists, only one is top-tier competitive though. It also has clear weaknesses (skyfire and AP) as opposed to other top lists like WarConvo or WraithHost.

Tyranids have a few issues, but they definitely dont suck. They are on par with Dark Angels, who also happen to just one top tier competitive list. Which, like Tyranids - has an achilles heel. In their case its ignores cover.

Not him but that's why I was thinking about starting a Wraith army.

If Walkers are too much to handle then perhaps T6 Infantry with a 4++ and really cheap Gargantuan Creatures (all the work of GW proper) will be more to their liking.

Yeah, the foes are nice as pie- I forgot to mention btw, we usually play 3v3 battles of about 6000 points a side (I'd only be using about 1500 points myself though, digging out an ancient collection of Templars)

Yeah, they're cool with houserules, no problem. We always design a couple for each game if it's got anything interesting going on, like earthquakes or daemonic portals opening up at random, etc., so yeah, no problem there

They'd be fine with Templars, one of them plays Space Puppies, even

The meta is kind of nonexistent, we don't really play to win and only two of us are competitive, one is my dad who's always on my side and he brought two Imperial Knights and a Wraithknight to the last game, and the other is awful at building competitive lists- no problem there

No chapter tactics per se, but they have the Righteous Zeal special rule, which states that any Templar unit that takes shooting casualties in the enemy's shooting phase, and is not pinned or falling back has to take a morale check- if they fail, they fall back as normal, if they pass, they move towards the closest visible enemy unit, the old rules state a Consolidate move as if a Massacre result was achieved in close combat which works out to 1d6, so we'd go with 1d6 nowadays, most likely. they also get Vows which are like pre-battle choosable army-wide special rules that give minor benefits, but that's it for BT-specific special rules

You'll do great against armored armies but you lack anti-horde firepower. Fill out the stealth teams for more burst cannons, or take another riptide with a heavy burst cannon and a smart missile system.
I think you should take some drones too, they're always useful.

This comes up so often it really should be a sticky somewhere.

Your army can have any number of detachments.
A detatchment is either a regular detachment which has slots for battlefield roles,(for example, combined arms detachment which is the traditional 2 troops 1 hq, etc)
or a formation, which has slots for specific units. (like the vulcha squad)
or a meta-detachment (like the necron decurion, which is essentially a detachment made up of formations instead of slots).

models can only ever belong to one detachment (remeber, formations are detachments too!)

So yes, the vulcha skwad by itself can be a fully complete army.
It can also be added to an existing army that already has a CAD (Combined arms detachment (1hq 2troops, etc))

It's not a detachment, it's a formation. Formations are contained within their selves, what it tells you to take is all you need. You can only take formations and not be unbound and even if you were to go unbound you still receive the formation benefits for those units inside the formation.

This is the most confusing part about 40k right now so don't be worried about not getting it, hopefully in the future they'll simplify it a little.

I realize that HH isn't *really* 40k, but there isn't a 30k general right now and I don't know if there is enough interest to make a new one. Maybe someone with some experience with the FW books can help me.
With Horus Heresy: Betrayal at Calth coming out soon-ish, I thought it would be the right time to take the plunge and get into HH for pretty cheap (£100 for £333 worth of miniatures). The first question is pretty obvious: Does the content of the box make for a decent starting force or should I rather get two? I mean, I could make two Contemptor-Mortis instead of regular ones that way and converting the monopose legs should be easy enough.
I also have an unpainted Deredeo with autocannons, if that's any help.
Second question is a bit more difficult: Which legion? Alpha Legion, Imperial Fists and Deathguard seem fun, but their color schemes require a lot of effort; the box doesn't lend itself to melee legions like WE, BA or EC; Lunar Wolves, Night Lords and Salamanders seem kinda meh; and everybody and their mother seem to be playing Iron Warriors, Ultramarines or Word Bearers. I really don't know what to do here...

So what normal detachment would be alright for my Vulcha Skwad to support at 1250? If I only use 5 stormboyz in each unit Then the detachment is only about 200 points.

Is there a cookie cutter 1000 point list that can hold its own?

It's also a pretty good deal even if you aren't interested in HH (and don't care what armour patterns are in your army). 30 tactical marines, 5 termis and a dreadnought are £131, and that's not even taking account of whatever the characters cost.

I'd prefer an ML3 Lib instead for the GK. With the Liber you'll get 4 Sanctic powers and that's tasty. Also helps you'll have a bunch of leftover points since they're cheaper. Putting a Psycannon in the terminator squad might be nice.

SHIT, I forgot to say that the termie squad has a psycannon included in it.

I was thinking if it would be worth swapping the guy with the hammer and psycannon to be my inquisitor, use the brother-captain as a normal termie and get a librarian. it would give the Inquisitor squad some hitting power and more psyker levels for all the dice. Would it be worth getting 2 levels on divination and 2 santic (including the book bonus) on a librarian?

The reason I give the justicar digital weapons rather than master crafting is because it's so easy to cast prescience and then hope for precognition on the HQ to make him a close combat monster.

Depends on your meta, I just made a list with the contents of the box and it comes to 1357pts, which you can easily add some upgrades/transports or another squad of whatever to make it into a nice 1500pt army. I think its a very good investment and personally Im going to get this and add a contemptor from FW.

Look into their pre-primarch color schemes and some alternative company colors, for example IF 1st company is all black with yellow shoulder pads which is an easy enough scheme to do and you can always add your own twist to it.

I really wonder about the equipment of those tacticals. Are those veteran tactical squads or did GW toss out the restriction to boltguns for legion tactical squads?
Also, cataphracti with three combi-bolters + powerfists, heavy flamer + chainfist and dual lightning claws. Not an amazing loadout, but I suppose a weapon swap should be easy enough. I just hope the weapon kits from FW work well enough with this kit.

Perfect. As the Anon who started the remove Tau posts from the ealier General threads, I've came up with a perfect plan to remove Tau. Make Tau remove themselves.
Step 1: Find Tau infestation
Step 2: Eat closest Tau. Leave no body behind.
Step Three: Replace dead Tau.
Step 4: Kill more Tau.
Step 5: Try to replace those Tau. Highest you should go is 10. Do not try to replace more than 10 Tau.
Step 6: Create paranoia
Step 7: Shoot self in foot and bring suspicion to self. Later make investigators think you're simply a creepy Tau.
Step 8: Kill Ethereal
Step 9: Blame the local Fire Caste commander
Step 10: Start inter caste violence
Optional Step 11: Make the pro-Tau humans suspects and make Tau bigots towards humans. They'll be opressed and more likely to turn on Tau.
Step 12: Watch as Tau remove themselves.
Optional Step 13: Find the most dangerous weapon the local Tau have, and remove them yourself now that there are only a few Tau left.

The thing is, you don't want to model the Psycannon and hammer on the same guy for Terminators because its a case of having all your eggs in one basket. One bad save roll and you lose both special weapons. You could use that model as an Inquisitor just remember to adjust your warband accordingly (I think chimeras can hold bulky models? Not sure). For Psychic powers I usually do the two Sanctic first to see if I get cleansing flame, gate, or sanctuary...but yeah divination could be fine. I kinda suck at the psychic table I'm sure there's better advice out there. But killing a flyer with a twin linked Psycannon plus bolter fire feels good with prescience.

Plasma pistols are a waste of points, you're also going to need better armor to stop your vets from over heating though without a chimera enemy fire may be a bigger problem for you.

mortar squads are pretty bad for their points and are extremely inflexible, generally the best option if you don't know what you need them for is auto cannons which do everything really well if nothing excellently or at least lascannons for fire support.

You generally want to deep strike the scions so they will most likely be out of order for long enough it's not worth putting a vox on them.
It's also much better you use combined squad to join to two infantry squads in to one so they're less likely to flee to panic tests and can all be effected by one order so you will only need one vox.

They're great when you need a unit to NEVER run away with the most notable buff to this being in close combat. They're not extremely important and most people see 25 points put to better use but at the same time they're not a waste of points if you're going to run a big infantry squad.

Lords of Wargaming said the Tacticals are supposed to be Veterans, though I'm not sure if that is concrete or just assumption on their part.

The Tacticals and Contemptor are also multi part plastic, so doing weapon swaps with them and the Cataphractii probably won't be that hard, the Cataphractii may actually even come with such options since the the Contemptor does.

But I don't know maybe that benefits them given they're usually running away from the direction the gunfire is coming from on the table.

When you're firing ten or more rokkits, 4 or more Kannon shots or 5 Blasts you tend to get quite a few hits regardless of how poor your ballistic skill is.

Yeah, it's pretty good.

Bigger deal though: Making the Nightbringer Toughness 8 with the God Shackle so he's immune to small arms fire.

Combine the two and you can drop him turn one in the enemy board half with 4 ablative wounds.

I just checked and you are right. That's great actually. Problem is I have neve magnetised stuff before and the different guns look like they are kinda integrated into the turret in a way that makes them tough to take out.

Honestly I prefer the vanilla Transcendent C'Tan shard. It's got the same WS/BS5 as the Deceiver but has 1 more wound and 1 more Strength than both Deceiver/Nightbringer. With the Godshackle making it S9 and all 3 T8, I find it more attractive.

They can, 30k tacticals is just marines with bolters, the special and heavy weapons are to make veteran squads.

Seems like you've kinda tried to balance it out too much for a 1k points list.

With my 1k point lists i usually try and focus on 1 or 2 aspects of a force to try and make threats the enemy wont be able to deal with.

With your list, everything is pretty easy to deal with and not particularly threatening if the enemy doesn't deal with it.

Alright, question time.

The Skyhammer Annihilation Force is to my knowledge a stand alone foc, correct? I have checked my Space Marine Codex and I cannot for the life of me find it! To my knowledge it was to be used in coherency with the Codex Space Marines, and all their various Chapter tactics.
Now, I have red the page, and no where does it say it must be models presented from Codex Space Marines.
While at the same time it is sure to mention it must contain Space Marines, it NEVER points out of what chapter this must be from.

Now to my question, is it viable to take the Skyhammer Annihilation Force with my Dark Angels, containing the rules for Dark Angels (such as Grim Resolve for instance)? Or is it totally stand alone force, such that it doesn't retain ANY of the rules of a "space marine chapter" at all?

See the symbol at the very top of the page? It means Vanilla marines. It's their symbol. If it was Blood Angels it would be a drop of blood with wings. If it was Dark Angels it would be that sword with wings.

I've been trying to figure out how to add the Deathstrike Vortex missile as a LoW choice, or formation to Battlescribe, but I've had no luck in figuring it out.

I've also been trying to find pictures or information on the appearance of Macharius' home world regiment, the Lion guard. I'd like to some day build an army similar to that of the crusade, where it has multiple regiments involved in a fight.

My friend plays Tau, and with the new dex out and no nerf to the Riptide in sight, is this formation worth it? Just drop down with some devastators thats loaded so that he HAS to target them with the intercept rule. Then swoop in and engaged the fucker in cc. No shooting for the rest of the battle when engaged to two squads of Assault marines!
I don't even care if I take the fucker down. Just tie him up as much as I can. Now that taking multiple Riptides is even encouraged by GW I'm afraid Ill be in real trouble here!

The issue is the completeness of the list of weapons defined as flamers: the hand flamer, flamer, and heavy flamer are the only things on it. As such, RA(poorly)W the rule does not apply.

With nothing left to help him survive he had to make due on his own and found several native creatures which would become his new playthings and the start of his army which he would use to seek revenge. His name would change because it would be the best way his creatures could pronounce his name. He would become Verminlord Skrax

They are complete crap. Any vehicle without a save is going to die in the first few turns. They have to few hull points and can easily be neutralized before they do anything.

Ironclads are only nice cuz you can usually charge them into combats that people can't hurt you. Eating up big blobs of weak dudes.

Until you join up with GW and change the rule then there is no getting around this, it's not open to interpretation.
You have to realize the fluff and the game are two completely independent things that have been attached together and the game would work just as well with all the names swapped with number plates. While it would make sense in the fluff in the rules it's set in stone.
It's called a "baleflamer" not a "flamer"
It shoots as a template weapon, there is no "shoots flames" in the rules
It looks like someone putting a template on top of your models.

There are various stories in novels and campaigns. Some new updates in codex books occasional. You have to buy a shit ton to really keep up to date.

Mostly the story barely moves forward though. There are just a million side stories in the same time.

IIRC when you have to conflicting stat mods of the same type (set value in this case) the player who's turn it is chooses the order they're resolved in. So no QS doesn't beat lance. Because the shooting player can just choose to have the lance value resolve second and set the value too 12.

The only real exploration of the setting is in the history of the setting. It doesnt move forward per se.. There are bits of new stuff in a few of the codexes and some BL fiction. But the vast majority of the story has already occurred.

the inquisition fluff is basically I gigantic joke all of the fans are the butt of where WE are the inquisitors who can't agree on past events because we've changed and redacted it all to suit our own views.

Skitarii are a lot of fun, and you can start small. Less so with Cult Mech (for the "small" part, I mean), but you can expand out from there.

Tau and Eldar are quite powerful at the moment, if that's what you go for.

There's no shame in going Space Marines as a starter. They truly are a fun army, if a simplistic one, but you will eventually want to expand. If you really don't want Vanilla Marines, and are okay with not constantly winning, a Deathwing/Draigowing force is a lot of fun to play, and relatively easy on the wallet.

Hey guys did I screw up? Ive been mulling over which HH army to start for about a year, and with the box coming in a couple weeks I decided to pull the trigger on Night Lords. Ordered Kurze, Sevatar, 15 Night Raptors, and all available NL accessories. Two HH boxes and I'll have over half my list if not 75% of it. So Im comitted to NL for HH.

How are Night Lords cheese? They have a harder time with AT, which most legions can bring en masse or at least in great quantities, and while they cause Fear (which is pretty damned useful in 30K) they themselves aren't immune to it, and can just as easily be forced to fall back if they're gutted.

Chaos Daemons... I find it hard to recommend as a starter army. They're very unpredictable, in many ways, and rely quite a bit on random throws. They're not a bad choice, not at all, but will require more work than most armies.

Nids frankly are monobuild at the moment. There is one good setup you can run. Nothing else with them is very viable. Now don't get me wrong, Flyrant's very good, but there's not a lot of flexibility with the rest beyond "fill list with Gaunts" or "fill list with Fexes." Again, not a terrible army by any real measure, but a tricky one to get into.

Grey Knights were extrememly overpowered in Ye Olde 5th Edition, and as such have been hit rather harder with the nerf bat than they really deserve. They're known for Paladins, but the other units in the dex (particularly Purifiers) are decent enough as well. They're a simple army to run, and you do get some fun models to play with (Land Raiders are mandatory here). Enjoyable, but not entirely competitive.

Necrons are... well, it's complicated, but they're basically either really strong in their Decurion FOC and its formations, or they're rather disappointing for their points. The Decurion makes them good, very good, but it's also somewhat restrictive. There's still plenty of room to work with, though.

This is also a really good point. You'll play off each other well, though you'll never be able to ally with each other with any kind of fluffiness.

I really recommend taking some time to think about it. Decide which ones' fluff you like best, which ones have the nicest models in you opinion. Which ones you think you can have fun with, and would enjoy sending out on a tabletop. The rules don't really mean shit if you're not having fun, after all.

Nids are monobuild, so not really. The newer army releases have some cool models, and are fun to model and paint.

Really, it hasn't changed all that much from years past in terms of community and playability. Not really better, not really worse. It's definitely not the same game, though.

One Wound really hurts anything designed for Melee in the bigger picture. Every other race has a unit with mulitple wounds, a higher amount of attacks, a better save, or a better strength in some combination

I just don't see what they can do. SoB update (assuming 4 weeks) would push them to 2017. But you know as well as I do, that shit won't happen. GW doesn't care about SoB (despite using them in Shield of Baal a fair bit). Not that some SoB fans mind, as companies just make proxies and make bank cause GW are fucking stupid. Why they can't do plastic Battle Sisters and go from there, I don't know. They gutted the codex for them, made it awful.... I dunno. Depressing.

You see this is a sore point for because there is a player at my local club who plays salamanders and interprets what is and is not a flamer based on the fluff description as well but the problem is he pushes it to the extreme. He claims he should be a allowed a FnP against anything fire based so flickering fires of tzeentch, rubric bolt rounds, meltas, soul blaze even takes them against the warp-flame special rule until he had a 2+ FnP.

While you may say "I'm more reasonable than that, he must be that guy exploiting the rules!" what I want you to say is why your liberal interpretation of this rule is any more valid than his? If taking FnPs is allowed against weapons not specifically listed just because they have flame in the name or are described as shooting fire why not everything fire based?

That's the thing. Even 2017 is too early. 2018/19 should be 8th if anything. I highly doubt CSM, Nids, Daemons, IG and TS will get 4 weeks of releases like Tau did.

Want to know what I'm hoping for?

The IG get an update of their campaign against Tau as the counter-attack force. With new weapons to take out the Stormsurge and stuff (what these are, I don't know... Maybe a shield generator gun emplacement? Maybe an anti-stealth unit?).

Followed by Temptus Scions special assignment campaign stuff.

Followed by Sister of Battles Orders which have been sent to go help.

Once again, SoB are mentioned to be involved in major fluff bits, but are unlikely to get anything. Is it really that expensive/hard to do new moulds?

SoB have a lot of uniqueness about them. They don't have a medium or heavy tank. They don't have a Super Heavy. They don't have unique flyers (thou Avenger is pretty much the closest they have atm) and they have only two characters. So they can make loads of cool shit.

I want Cathedral Tank. Make it a mix between a Stormlord and Vindicator. So, 40ish troop capacity, 20ish fire ports, big demolisher cannon type gun, loads of small arms also. Give it some inspiring aura buff to all Imperial troops (it'd be complicated if you ignored SM's due to 'we're Jews' since BT are now BFF with SoB and co).

Considering that harlequins and admech got codices, I will not be surprised to see SoB getting a codex before 2016 ends. I'm not saying that it will, but if it happens, I won't be surprised.

Here's my breakdown of things I expect to see.

I recalled talks of campaigns being the order of the game going forward and GW are looking to release 4 campaigns in a year. So one every 3 months. Consider that each campaign involves 2 sides at the minimum with each side taking up 2-3 weeks for any new models/formations and we're looking at 4-6 weeks for both releases on both sides. Factor in about 2 weeks for the campaign itself and a campaign will probably take up 6-8 weeks or 1 and half months to 2 months.

We must also remember that there's AoS which will likely end up taking up the off months in between 40k. December is also traditionally offlimits for new releases so we're short a month in the year. Since we have 4 codices in 6th ed, we'll likely see at least 2 updated before the year is out, maybe all. Each codex takes up at least 3 weeks, sometimes 5.

So doing all the math and working on the assumption that GW wants to update all the books to 7th for the first time, we can be reasonably safe in assuming that 8th(if it does come) will not be until 2018 at the earliest.

Should I build the Dark Angels up piecemeal, maybe get a different HQ or some more troopers or even some elites?

I've only really played 2-3 games so far and have about 90% of my guys unpainted and 4 horribly painted chaos cultists.

The Infantry Platoon is something you'd probably run anyway, if you were going infantry. The Lord commissar is eh, but he's relatively cheap anyway.

I've used it in 1 game against necron. Scattered like mad off target and took out 2 scarabs and his charriot HQ. The little vortex proceeded to wiggle back and forth until it fizzled out turn 4.

You do realise actual dreadnoughts would be broken in kill team, right? Terminators are tough enough as it is, throwing in dreadnoughts would be outright retarded, given how powerful they are in a scale where not a lot of people have access to, or just generally have the room for, anti tank equipment. The walkers I know of are all AV10, which makes them manageable. A dreadnought? No way, buddy.

The only guy who tried to run a dread in kill team in our flgs gor massacred, but then again we have a lot of elf players. Nothing says 'wrong neighbourhood' quite like a firepike lodged between your glute actuators.

in seriousness, Riptides are "anti marine" in a box, especially with interceptor being so cheap on an AP2 blast platform. and tying it up with a few assault marines seems far nicer than some of the other alternative counters......
