Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you wiped out the last of the void creatures and got accused of being a filthy degenerate.

It is currently the 20th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You pull open the metal codex, laying it out flat on your lap and pressing your palm against the surface. Channeling just a touch of vys, the book rapidly starts to flip pages of its own volition. As it nears the end of the book, roughly where you'd previously seen a illusory depiction of a clearly feminine Dhatu, the pages slow and finally stop as the ink begins to rise off the page

Dhatu, in all her resplendent glory, folds out of the page wearing a long robe of black iron ornamented with copper and silver, her face a bright red copper mask. You're not actually sure how they managed to get the metal such a brilliant shade of red. Regardless she turns her head towards you, staring you dead in the eyes, before shifting into her masculine form. The iron creeps up, encroaching upon her head, while the copper condenses itself into both a gleaming red heart and a wicked blade. The silver forms itself into his various mask, while balls of other metals form a necklace about his neck.

A third shift takes place. This time he is again feminine, with two heads fused into one. She has three eyes, two mouths, four horns, and a body made entirely of cracked iron Her head is gold, and the same material decorates her armor. You can't say you recognize the symbolism, she certainly doesn't appear to be Samjan in origin, but before you can properly examine Dhatu's form she shifts yet again. Back to her masculine form.

In this form, the form you're most familiar with and the form in which he most often seems to appear, Dhatu reaches down and slides between the pages, onto the next. You quickly turn the page, but instead of Dhatu you find a vast runic array spread out in the air in front of you. You recognize many of the runes, reinforce is featured prominently. As are the runes for mark, leech, soul, and revert. You're actually able to form a vague idea of what this might due. It seems to extract the souls of whoever stands within the outer circles and transfer the accumulated divine essence to one, central figure. Meditating on a rune you don't recognize.

Before your very eyes this process takes place. Gold flows out from within figures cast in black at the edge of the circle, filling the central figure, cast in silver, until the gold begins to gleam through underneath. The central figure disappears, the metal which made up his body rapidly sinking into the runic array itself, even as the black figures collapse on the ground.

The page turns of its own volition and the seen shifts, this time displaying that silver and gold figure striding towards a male Dhatu, seated on a vast throne in the middle of a shattered palace. Dhatu does not move. He does not so much as shift his weight as his servant prostrates himself on the ground in front of him. There's a few seconds during which the figures are all still, and then the worshiper rises to his feet. He hurls bolts of copper at Dhatu, tries to drag down the temple around the slumbering god, but nothing rouses him.

After several minutes of struggling to wake his god, the silver and gold figure is starting to look far more silver than gold. His hand turns into a blade, which standing before the god he plunges into his neck. Gold spews from the wound, and much to your surprise into Dhatu. It seeps through his iron body, forming thin veins of gold throughout but accumulating specifically around his eyes, giving the impression that the god is awake.

Then the page turns, and you see another silver figure stalking across the field of iron corpses. The scene shifts, to depict a silver figure working laboriously over an iron desk with a copper book placed upon its surface. He sits back, his hand shifting into a blade, and plunges the knife into his throat. Copper spews spectacularly from the wound, draping across the desk in long ropes. Then the page turns once more and the scene shifts.

You're given a close up on the silver figures head, copper oozing from the wound on his neck. Around his head a gold halo slowly forms, black text scrawling across its resplendent surface. In many ways, it seems a sort of personal plea. It begs the reader to be wary of the mistakes of the past, and warns that the gods are fickle things. That their reasoning can often seem strange to us poor, unfortunate mortals. It warns that ambition has been the death of too many great thinkers.”

Then the scene shifts, and the pages turn, and in place of that somber warning is a silver figure standing alone, a golden orb sitting proudly in his chest. All manner of creatures wrought in black iron appear from the ground around him, launching themselves at that golden orb, but as wherever they touch their forms are destroyed. In their place arrive other silver figures, their arms shaped into blades. They swing and stab and slash, but not once does the central figures form falter or break.

You note that the other silver figures have golden cores as well, but theirs are surrounded by shells of black iron. The central figure's core is solid gold. With a wave of his hand, the other figures are repulsed, and he folds his legs beneath himself. He doesn't sink, as one would normally expect, but just floats there. At least, he would be floating. You're not sure if that's intentional or some sort of oversight on the author's part.

Then the book slams shut. You're almost angry. You spent so long investing time and effort into the book and that's how it ends? Then the metal inlayed in the cover begins to flow and shift before your very eyes. The embossed gold designs rise form the rusted iron, twining together into the masculine form of Dhatu. This time solid, rather than liquid as you've seen him previously.

As he draws himself up you realize he's much taller than you originally suspected. He's able to stare you dead in the eye, and as a finger reaches across to tap you lightly on the forehead the book emits a pulse of vys. You feel your head split, knowledge forcing its way through your thoughts for the second time today. However, this time the knowledge is more instinctual. You get the sense that you just sort of... know, where Dhatu is. He's in the void. If you just let yourself follow your instincts, you might be able to reach him.

However, he is distant. Two, three, four days travel through the black of the void no matter where you begin your journey or what route you take. Keeping your body alive while separated for so long from your soul would be a titanic effort, probably requiring several assisting Vatis. The time spent in the void will be no easier. You could be tainted, or worse, while traversing that blighted realm.

Have you never shown them the book before? You could have sworn you mentioned it at some point. Regardless, now's as good a time to explain as any. “Right, well. I think you recall that I found this book in the library of the temple to Pani we stayed in for a few weeks. Well, it turned out to be an ancient religious text regarding a god Dhatu, the god of metal. Among other things, but metal is his primary concern. To be brief, he fell asleep at some point and has remained asleep ever since, his cult slowly but surely dwindling until none remained.”

You heft the book for emphasis. “This book has revealed to me the location of his... well, sanctum I suppose. His resting place. It's deep within the void, but I feel as though I should be able to reach it if I could only find a way to ensure my bodies survival while I'm in the void. This knowledge was granted to me by the book when the figure touched my forehead, though I'm not exactly sure how that works.”

"I think that it could be worth the journey, if for no other reason than being able to claim that you have seen a god in person and lived to tell the tale." She rest a hand on Mortia's shoulder, your companion still sprawled out and fast asleep though some color has begun to return to her cheeks. "I'm sure this one could concoct some potion or another to keep your body alive.

First, we know that Mortal souls are not enchantments, they're an elaborate combination of the strings of reality.

The Varistha starts off by arguing that the Samjan 'Soul' is not so much an entity as it is a substance. A resource, renewable infinitely...It is from this soul that Vys originates, as a natural byproduct of Soul. The Varistha argues that it is the result of the Soul degrading. Turning into a lesser substance.

Average magic users use Vys to manipulate the strings of reality, but Vys itself is just a middleman. I think that's the special, ancient magic that the Gods and that Soma has been hinting Mik might be rediscovering. Actual String manipulation magic. And I think that's what we need to master to "Affect our Will on reality." Remember how in the past, Soma described some Enchanters as being so power, they could rob objects of their solidity by stealing their quality of rigidness?

Well, you can only meditate one more time on Metal before you hit the limit. You'll need to earn the fifth insight as a GM meditation, which I'd rather not deal with at the moment.

Thus, we'll do it this way. I'll have you roll for a Metal meditation. If you fail, you'll roll again until you succeed. However many times you have to roll is the number of days you spend on it.

Soul reinforcement seems the most popular option. So that's what I'll go with for method.

Normally I'd say you'd have to roll to enter the void each time independently, but that would be silly. You'll only get a -2 on the second roll which is way better than the -12 to leaving or reentering your body.

I've actually revised that. Open gates will be determined by where you are, not what you roll.
If you fail this roll, the consequences aren't that grand. You'll be stuck in your body, and might suffer some minor backlash on a severe failure (something like a general -4 to all rolls for the day, not relevant really in a timeskip).

If you fail I'll let you roll again, since there's no real time limit here.

The cheering only grows louder as you grow closer. Rather than the crowds thinning, they grow even thicker as you approach the gate, the press of bodies halting your progress as the crowd chokes off the route forward. There's no guards, no separation between you and the crowd. Innumerable hands reach out for you, the people below competing just for a chance to touch your armor, or your hand. You think someone tries to steal one of the golden scales off your camel's armor but nearly gets trampled as a result. It's a surreal experience to put it mildly, you almost feel like you're dreaming.

Flanking the gates on either side are some of the priest and monks whom you commanded during the battle. They sprinkle you and Mortia with water blessed and purified by the temple using thin silver tubes filled with small holes. Great braziers burn dhupa, a type of fragrant medicinal resin said to have any number of health benefits, as well as opium and what might be hashish, though you're not certain. The musky smell is masked by the sweetness of the opium and the intensity of the incense.

You breathe deeply of the fragrant smoke, the crowds starting to thin as you enter the city proper. Here the militia have set up make-shift barricades on either side of the street using whatever they had available. Carts, lengths of wood, market stalls, in some places they simply link arms and stand in front of the crowd. Mortia does not seem to be taking this nearly so well as you are. She fidgets nervously atop her camel, worrying away at the hem of her dress.

She should be enjoying this more than she is. You're not even really supposed to be involved. Reaching across the connection afforded to you by the brooches, you urge your thoughts to mingle with hers. {Relax, Mortia. They're here to celebrate your accomplishments. Try not to look so horribly uncomfortable.}

You dismount carefully, moving to help the struggling Mortia. She's much shorter than you are, and the drop seems to have proven a little more intimidating than she was expecting. It's to be expected really, this is probably the first time she's ever been around a crowd this large.

A group of slaves arrives, composed of both samjan and human but all of them women. Zaahir appears by your side before they have a chance to drag you away, apparently having dismounted his own gilded camel. Clapping an affectionate hand on your shoulder he admonishes you. “Do try not to enjoy yourself too much, little brother. I'll need most of them able to walk in the morning.”

What, he expects you to debase yourself screwing a bunch of slaves? You scoff. “All you need to worry about is making sure my companions get back safe and sound, I think I lost them somewhere amongst the crowd.” A glance over your shoulder confirms your suspicions, you can spot neither hide nor hair of your companions among the crowd thronging just outside the gates. “Make sure the elf in particular makes it back, I don't want him raising hell throughout the city.” Profectus has probably sobered up by now, and he'll be looking to change that as soon as possible.

But we reinforced his tie to his body - its housing - and did not sever that sympathetic connection. So now he's burning up from the inside, or shit is about to get really weird, or he'll be possessed by something that followed the bonds, or whatever.

My guess is that having his soul pull into the realm of the divine and/or the void during his time dead made the core of divinity within his soul go into overdrive decaying and regenerating his soul too fast thereby generating too much vys. I recommend leaching of the excess vys.

You feel a strange pair of hands wrap around your abdomen while you're trying to pull off your cuirass and slap them away without really thinking about it, so focused are you on the task at hand. The slave in question, the one who spoke earlier and the leader of this little troupe you suppose, places her hands on the swell of her hips and adopts a concerned tone. “Are you sure you're okay? You shove your cuirass into your cloak, working quickly to remove your pauldrons and gauntlets before shoving them in the cloak as well. “I'm most certainly not okay.” You bolt out rapidly, while working on your boots. “A kid I brought back from the dead has started twitching wildly somewhere in the city and I need to find him before he turns into some sort of horrible flesh-rending monstrosity.”

You don't even turn to look at them as you remove your cloak, tentacles sliding out to present you with your purple and gold Grandmaster's robes. You slide them on quickly, along with your leather boots, and then whip your cloak back on. You leave the five women standing in stunned, confused silence. Watching your retreat towards the walls.

In practice, you made the ramp too steep and end up rolling a few times across the cobblestones, but that's a minor inconvenience.

You're momentarily distracted by a triumphant roar, Zahak flying low over the center street and spewing fire into the sky, directed carefully away from the buildings and people below. Much to the excitement of the crowd, you note. He pushes his wings forward as he nears the palace, slowing his momentum and allowing him to land almost gently in the courtyard. You really hope that doesn't somehow backfire, because you've got bigger concerns to attend to.

A quick knock sees the door jerked open, Fulvia standing on the other end looking mildly concerned. The boy is sprawled out on the bed, flesh charring before your very eyes and forming strange patterns all across his face and arms. The result of channeling far too much vys, you'd guess. You can actually feel how saturated the room is without even really trying, your entire body tingles unpleasantly just from being here, your hairs standing on end.

The only ring you have on you is the Vys Ring, the Hiacian Signet Ring is with Chryssa at the moment (who's here, but it wouldn't do much good anyway). You'll put the vys ring on him because that will help him channel all the vys flowin' through him without being harmed.

Honestly, Vampire Bride, Dragon Quest and Void Quest were something special. Immediately you notice something's amiss. Usually the strings are more or less evenly spaced, fairly close together, and more or less still. They rarely intersect and when they do, there's usually a clear logic to it all. At least, that's been your very limited experience with them. That is not the case here. Roughly where you imagine the boy's body to be the strings warp drastically. Some twist together, others have fallen apart and rebound themselves to other strings. It reminds you of a cobweb in some ways, except robbed of any rhyme or reason.

Those at the heart of the confluence form a knot the size of your head, vibrating with increasing intensity. You notice with no small concern that the strings are starting to fray around the edges, thin strands of gold splitting off of the threads near the knot. It seems as though at any moment they might break apart, ripping the world a new hole it almost certainly doesn't need.

Strings passing through other people are not tangled. There's a slight distortion, but to call them tangled would be an exaggeration. Darzi for instance seems to curve strings inward, while Profectus causes strings passing through him to flare out slightly. Fulvia's distortion is by far the strongest. Strings passing through her take on an hourglass shape, curving inwards, reaching a point where they all meet, and then flaring outwards.

Even the strings passing through Mik aren't that extreme, and they're the second most distorted in the party.

You stare at the ever more unstable knot of golden thread, trying to figure out what it is that might be wrong with the boy to have caused such a disturbance. You're reminded of a Vys Generator, and the way it pulls vys across its surface but doesn't actually suck it in, allowing the vys to be harvested. You forget what Mortia called them, but you know they work off the idea that a contained portal to the void will constantly draw in vys.

You're not sure why you're reminded of Vys Generators staring at the knot, but the way the threads slide across the surface of some invisible ball underneath the knot reminds you of the way vys slid across the surface of the generator. Like they're being attracted to some point in the center which they can't quite reach for some unknown reason. You find yourself reaching forward without really understanding what it is you're doing, channeling vys into a spell you don't really understand. It's just instinctual, voices at the back of your mind whispering the next move you need to make.

You rip apart one thread, sending each end shooting away from the other. You catch each, and connect them to other strings. These strings promptly snap away from their partners, forming continuous, and above all unknotted strings, with the other severed ends. You keep working through the knot with a sort of methodical certainty, until the knot has stopped vibrating and the frayed strings are no longer frayed.

The knot is much smaller know, about the size of your fist, and far more easily understood. You could unravel it easily if you really tried, but you feel as though that might have unforeseen consequences. Instead you grab hold of the knotted strands and twist them, binding them together in places and breaking them apart in others. At one point, you find yourself wielding a length of vys like a cord, inserting it into the fabric of reality and watching as it takes on solid form, turning the same gold as the other strands which make up the fabric of reality.

The issue, you think, is that the knot had bound itself to a handful of unrelated and unnecessary strings because it was trying to compensate for some element that it was lacking. Now that you've supplied the element, the knot slowly unwinds itself. It goes from a barely comprehensible mess to a handful of strings which have been warped passing through the kid, flaring out as they pass through his body. Much as the strings passing through Profectus, come to think of it.

You watch him for a while, making sure that things don't suddenly and drastically go awry. After a few minutes you allow yourself to pull out of your trance, pausing once his soul comes into view. Though rent in several places by long gashes, through one of which you can see the shattered shell around the core of his soul, it's no longer shedding its outer shell. You finally draw full out of your meditative trance to find the boy sleeping peacefully, his breathing labored and his skin slick with sweat.
