So tell me /tg/, how do you feel about traditional fantasy? Swords and Sorcerery? Wizards and Warriors?

Are you bored of it yet? I ask because I have only been in the hobby for a few years, and am still excited about it, but I feel like many others are bored and are branching out into other, stranger types of fantasy roleplaying.

But how about you? How do you feel about it?

I wanted to dislike it.
But the best game I've ever run has been in the most generic fantasy setting I could come up with (to the point of being parody) which turned out to be somewhat original and interesting.

I still really like my "origenell settign donut steel" but it's on the backburner as far as world building goes right now.

I've looked around and seen things like;
>Cowboy/Western Expansionist fantasy
>Science Fantasy space fantasy
>Really Gonzo setting
>Tribal fantasy
>Gothic horror fantasy
>1920s Prohibition fantasy
>Atomic/world war era fantasy

Lots of stuff like this, and possibly some more. All of these may have some of the same themes or assets for a game, but are really different from the good old sword and sorcery style medieval fantasy esque game.

I think it might be a bit more 1930s-1940s, but I'd love to play a game in the Skullgirls setting.

Art deco aesthetic with a pulpy horror vibe. Parasites and living weapons. Fighting game martial arts shenanigans. Hot chicks all day erry day. Shit would be so cash.

I don´t dislike "traditional fantasy", i dislike the overuse of it, the genre is, im sorry to say, obsolete (unless you really want to play the same old stuff again and again on your games).

You mean the historical context of the fantasy being written or the historical context of the fantasy setting itself?

For the first one, the foremost example i can think of would be A Song of Ice and Fire, for the later, it would be something like Fate/Stay Night.

People really should concentrate on new, innovative ideas instead of recycling and saturating the old ones. I mean, in a similar manner Shadowrun innovated the cyberpunk genre by adding fantastical elements.

I'm aware of what you mean. I just think the fact that there is a fantasy so common as to be called "traditional" is kind of absurd. It's a genre with limitless budget and potential, without really any constraints but some basic expectations of internal consistency.

Nothing new under the sun. The fact someone has already done something is by no means a reason you shouldn't take your own shot at it.

You might think tittyrupgas are niche, but the great thing about generic kitchen sink fantasy is that it is, in fact, mainstream. Any uninitiated or non-neckbeard player is going to immediately understand werewolves, elves, wizards, zombies, knights and dragons. Whereas they won't know what the technonabble in a scifi setting does.

That's why I think it's alright to keep things a bit cartoonish.

There is potential? of course there is, but come on, the old "doverse humans, high-powered-but-dwidling-and-immortal elfs and savage, hordelike Orcs" merely doesn´t work anymore. The only fresh air the genre gets its from the "unorthodox" subgenres like dark and low fantasy.

There's literally nothing unorthodox about those. Low fantasy predates Tolkien fantasy by a long stretch. Dark fantasy is merely a matter of writing tone. The only thing that distinguishes them is that they're (relatively) less popular than Tolkien fantasy, though with the success of Game of Thrones, that's likely to change.

I don´t see how, low fantasy merely means a fantasy with a low amount of "fantasy" on it, but so far the definitions goes, even a story with little "fantasy" but with the moral compass black-and-white as Lord of the Rings would work.

Getting bored with a genre is a strange idea to me. Settings, sure, but not a genre in sum.

What I am tired of are thoughtless settings, unthinking gamemasters. I appreciate that some people roll dice to tune out and just have some fun, and that's good for them, but that's not the table I enjoy playing at.
So I suppose while I am not tired of what you would call traditional fantasy, I am certainly tired of the generic fantasy setting oft played from it. These worlds without history, culture, or substance, populated only with varying shapes of human wearing funny hats.

Yeah. when I play I want to explore the world but the GM just thinks you want to dice roll. It's so boring. I don't play much now and GM instead. I still suck but I'm getting better. It's a hard thing to get better at when the only way to do so is by GMing.

As circumstances in the modern world continue to change and evolve as a natural process of culture, perspectives, viewpoints and ideas will continue to change. As a result, any modern work within a particular genre is going to be inherently different from everything that came before it. Also, as I said, the fact someone already did something is not a good reason to not do it.

This is a traditional games board. Tolkien based fantasy is still the default for fantasy RPG settings and wargames.

Low fantasy is historical fantasy with fantastical elements inserted into it. It's basically the original fantasy.

Unless Michael Moorcock's works or Warhammer qualify as especially recent, it's not all that fresh.
