If you get a wish-granting Genie in a lamp, what would you wish for?

Rule #1 You only get three wishes. No wishing for more wishes. Period. Loopholes on this are as wide as they are abuseable. Proceed with caution.

Rule #2 The wishes are limited to any power covered by the scope of spells and Extended spells from the common Practices of any Arcanum, with the exception that it can also combine master-level spells and cast them at a sympathetic range, even if they're spells that normally can't use it. Furthermore, they use advanced spell factors, and cast them as an instant action, once the wish is made. There are vast protean forces and god-like powers that'll step in to eliminate the peril you present. Complete erasure and cessation of being is what you'll experience for such blatant hubris.

Rule #4 Be wary of Raising the Dead. It's easier to raise the recently deceased, while the longer that someone has remained dead, the less successful or otherwise undesirable the results of recovery attempts will turn out.

Bloodlines is a great advert for Masquerade, and introduction. One potential negative people point out for oWoD is the intricate metaplot and prescriptive world. Well, bloodlines introduces you to heaps of those concepts, thin-bloods, ghouls, princes, elysiums, political factions like anarchs etc etc.
It could be good to get into V20 since Bloodlines has primed you for just the right urban punk feel, but Reqiuem 2E is a plenty dynamic experience if your storyteller knows what the players want.
I kind of agree about the covers, they kind of look like the inner cover artwork, but they age better.

That isn't metaplot stuff, that is all Vampire setting fluff. VtMB doesn't do any metaplot shenanigans. Mages are mentioned once, Werewolves are an unknowable outside force, Kuei Jin are barely explained and Hunters are just Hunters.

A lot of the key words from VtM transfer over to VtR like princes, elysiums, ghouls, ect. so it isn't that big of a shocker to transfer over. In fact, in my experience, diving into VtM proper was a bigger hurdle after playing the game because the game only introduces you to a fraction of the setting. There are whole clans, powers, and concepts not present in the game.

Personally, I would have recommended V20 before 2E came out but I really like the GMC rules update and playing the new Vampires and Werewolves are pretty fun. Plus, in VtR, you're less likely to play with Malkavians. They were fun in the game but they are really fucking annoying in real life.

As for Werewolf, I like Apocalypse a lot so I'd say W20 but I haven't touched WtF 2E. I didn't like 1E but have heard nothing but good things about 2E. 1E was fucking boring as shit though and WtA's setting is way cooler.

well, the thin bloods and the factions like the camarilla tied into gehenna, and cain, and the differing perspectives; because you invest so much time into the game and the concepts are introduced to you at a digestible pace, it's a great primer. I'm not saying several plot specific lines cut a swathe through the game (though some characters did show up and their were other nods) but it is mired in the prescriptive setting. Another plus, it introduces you to the clans and stereotypes, like malkavian madness, the concept of generation

a werewolf did show up though (and some werewolf blood)

Yeah, but those aren't "metaplot". Gehenna is not metaplot in the context of VtM since its just their version of the apocalypse, not the shared apocalypse that threatens the entire cWoD or the one in Werewolf's title. Knowing that Werewolves exist in the same universe does not prepare you for the metaplot and metaphysics of the Triad and shit.

My other point is that despite introducing you to things, cWoD is much more complex than what the game can prepare you for. nWoD on the other hand is much more streamlined and simple by design. There are only 5 major clans and the setting is familiar enough that you'll be able to recognize the clans from VtMB. Daeva are obvious Toreador, Nosfertau and Ventrue and Gangrel are the same and Mekhet are kind of like all the other vampires you weren't exposed to in the game. VtR's clans are much more similar to VtMB than the full assortment of clans in VtM.

What it really boils down to thematically is whether or not you are interested in large scale politics and conspiracies or more into personal, small scale horror. Do you want your players to be bossed around by their elders, being manipulated to do their dirty work while trying to make a name for yourself or are you more concerned about the day to day question of how your Vampire is going to find it's next meal?

Mechanically I think VtR 2E is way superior so I can't recommend V20 on that axis. But thematically the idea that you're just a small cog in a large, global conspiracy that spans thousands of years is fun. It depends on what game you want to run.

Now that I think about it, if he's new to RPGs and is coming straight off of the PC game, V20 isn't the game he should start with. Its a 20 year old ruleset and has all of that cWoD clunkiness. VtR is much more streamlined and easy for a new ST to get into since the overall cast of characters tends to be smaller. Juggling the Anarchs, the Camarilla and the Sabat can be pretty daunting.

this is true, but the freedom cuts the other way. You can decide to make requiem super political, or stick to personal stories, and in fact a lot is open. Masquerade and bloodlines have told you how to play much more clearly, as you put it mostly being told what to do by your elders.

I agree, especially since V20 acknowledges it is in some aspect a nostalgia piece, but since I transitioned to nWoD and never looked back I'm cognizant of bias in it's favour and try to give legitimate reasons as to why oWoD got, and retained, so many hardcore fans.
I do miss variable TN's though.

That still isn't metaplot. Its all self contained within the Vampire mythos. The idea of thin bloods and the antediluvian rising to eat their childr. What you're describing is just plain old simple plot.

in anycase, what we'll call the prescriptive plot is much more prevalent in the oWoD and Bloodlines is a great entry point. I'm kind of confused as to how it made it harder for you to get into Masquerade, but that could be because Bloodlines takes a straight up storytelling approach whereas Masquerade has slabs of lore dissecting everything you probably took for granted in bloodlines.

I played Bloodlines, then got into Requiem, and nWoD as a whole.
I recently read the V20 and I really, really liked it. It has the urban grunge feel that I eat the fuck up, and I like the familiarity of the setting.

Requiem is cool and more sandbox-y, but I kinda like the metaplot. Strictly as someone who only got into this shit a few years ago.

Pretty much. There was a shit ton of things to read. The clans alone were double in number. And the infamous metaplot drove me into a rut where I'd be hunting down more and more obscure info that wasn't necessary to just starting a game.

Yeah, it's fun. One of the people playing the game got goaded into fighting a Mage and are certainly going to get their shit pushed in next session because they aren't great at combat and OOC we know the mage has at least Death 4 and can fly. In their defense, while they did shoot first the Mage started it by freaking him out with the worst introduction possible. It was all very well role played.

Also, I'm not that big of a Paradox fan. Paradox isn't an RPG developer and I'm worried the same thing will happen with CCP.

People are hopeful for another VtM:B but Troika is dead and Paradox is hardly a replacement.

Onyx Path was never owned by CCP - it's an independent company licensing various bits of WW IP out from CCP. OP purchased some of those IPs outright (like Trinity).

Paradox now owns the IPs that hadn't been bought. Presumably OP will seek a similar agreement with Paradox to the one they currently had with CCP, but things aren't clear at this stage.

OP still outright own their own new IPs and those they bought off CCP/WW.

In general, Beasts believe that they stem directly from the Dark Mother. They also believe that the Dark Mother later birthed all of the other monsters in the World of Darkness, since most monsters seem to map to the fears of humanity in some fashion. This would make Beasts sort of Big Brothers and Sisters to all their "family." This leads to some condescending tone - mostly in the "stereotype" quotes in the character profiles.

That was mostly fixed during rewrites, and it was never meant to be fact - just how Beasts, on average, might see it. In the released PDF, the only ones they're really condescending to are Demons, since Demons don't seem to be descended from the Dark Mother at all.

The way you "unite" the cWoD and nWoD crowds is to do exactly what OPP has been doing. Publish both concurrently, and make sure the gamelines are distinct enough that people are going to have reasons to want to play both instead of ignoring one and only playing the other.

Forcing, say, Awakening to be Ascension (or Ascension to be Awakening) isn't going to make either crowd happy.

People might be happy about Requiem getting turned into Masquerade, but that's more due to Masquerade's fanbase being huge and Requiem being pretty much flavorless as its own thing (at least until Blood & Smoke).

The revision is about playing poker with a vampire and the Jersey Devil, learning all you can about other monsters, and teaching spooky lessons to mortals via a "scare them straight" approach. All these things are optional though, so if you wanted to you could just run around and be a horrible monster like the Beasts in the first draft.

A lot of people hold the sins of the first version against the final product. The final product still has its flaws that carried over from the original, but I think it is a lot of fun as long as you realize the game has shitty balance.

They did this once before. It was called the New World of Darkness. It had the opposite effect of the "unite the fanbase" stuff that they've said they're aiming for. Is it just me or does Paradox sound like they don't know what the fuck they are talking about? It sounds like they're huge cWoD fanboys that stopped following the scene post 2005 because OPP has been more involved with the fans in recent years than White Wolf has, ever.

They are calling V:TM the second best selling tabletop rpg. Their knowledge is ~15 years out of date, so I don't doubt their ability to give the NWoD a fair shake is limited. They probably think it's newfangled stuff for kids.

Yeah, but meanwhile CCP had tons of experience with MMO stuff and somehow fucked that up. So who knows.

And here is where I start to question why everyone is so excited. Its like CCP all over again. Neither CCP or Paradox are RPG developers. They aren't Troika, Obsidian, Larian, Bioware, Bethesda, Harebrained Schemes, Pirhana Bytes or whoever still makes CRPGs these days. From what I've read of the comments to these news stories, everyone thinks this is the second coming of Bloodlines but I'm not convinced. Paradox makes games, sure, but they don't make RPGs. I'm not convinced they have the writers or designers capable of making a good RPG. They could always outsource stuff to other devs but one game company buying the property from another isn't something to be excited about.

nWoD got me interested 10 years ago

Even with the anniversary releases, cWoD is a cluttered, convoluted, asymmetrical mess. I can't enjoy only this universe if it's the only one left. There's no growth in the old world. There's no mystery, no horror. It's all charted, all storied and marked like Faerun or Cthulhu, but still thrown in our faces all the time.

The fans of the cWoD may have the run of products, and they might have the most entrenched history, but their lines don't capture everyone. They didn't enthrall with the wasted struggle of prometheans, chronicle mages who struggle against the world itself, leave myths of werewolves not as atrophied limbs of a dying earth but as hunters of malign usurpers and balancers of an animistic worldscape.

Were the old guard left without anything but their old worlds to plot in. For seven years they were, until a celebrated and laborious reassertion brought them again to the forefront even ahead of their "replacement". Well, now the nWod is older. We have seen drops and triumphs and a starvation leading to a promise of the new. To waste their new start, new potential, to feed someone already stronger, would be a sad state indeed. I would not stay for it.

Although such an end is, in either universe, perhaps thematically appropriate.

Bioware is by all accounts really good.
Skyrim is the closest Bethesda has come to making a good game. Bethesda can't make a good game. They can make good worlds, and good modding kits, but they can't make a good GAME.

Depends how you define good game.

All of their games are buggy nightmares with subpar mechanics, terrible faces and voices and bad animations, BUT they are all fun and engaging which makes them good games to me. Let mods sort out the rest I guess.

I think ill be disappointed in FO4 though after playing witcher 3 on ultra for so long, its going to look like a generic plastic mess.

Everyone's beloved Morrowind is utter garbage, and while Skyrim is fun, it's really not that great. It's repetitive and the mechanics aren't all that sound. Hell, aren't the melee weapons hitscan? They don't feel like swords, they feel like short range guns.

Either autojumping in place or intentionally not leveling to take advantage of the rubberbanding. One top of the absolutely atrocious gamefeel associated with just swinging your weapon. Oh, and the buggy quests, at least one of which gives conflicting information, and the weird stupid faction balancing/abusing, and the just fucking everything. Please. Every NWoD game I've played in was just some variant of VtM with a fresh coat of paint. One of the GM's literally started making the game about Pentex. This was VtR.

And the 20th Edition books say fuck off to the metaplot entirely.

But w/e, this isn't /v/ and there is no point in trying to explain this shit here. The only reason I brought Bethesda up was to point out that Paradox is not an RPG developer. This isn't really the place to whinge about Auntie Beth.

That said, it sounds like the problem you (or the other guy if that wasn't you) have with VtM stems from your story teller, not the game. Remember, all you needed to play VtM were the core books. The meta plot only came into play if you bought all the supplements and wanted to use the OPTIONAL story hooks.

I agree that after 2e, I would recommend VtR over VtM. The system is just so much better compared to what it was before. The setting differences with VtM are pretty minor, I'd say, unless you were particularly attached to one of the defunct clans.

Werewolf is a whole different can of worms, though. The setting of Forsaken is so drastically different from Apocalypse that it's very off-putting. I've heard people compare the two games as a matter of preferring "Legend of Korra with furries" (their words, not mine) or 90s edgelord brutality, though obviously take that with a grain of salt.

Having read WtF 2e, I'd say it's extremely playable, highly recommended, and werewolves received a big buff, but they're still significantly weaker than their WtA counterparts. In WtF, you can probably overpower a vampire one-on-one, assuming it isn't a combat spec; in WtA, you could tear apart the entire damn coterie alone. Also, even with the 2e addition of "favored prey" to give the Tribes more flavor, I still found them too uninteresting to care about, and the favored prey actually complicated matters tremendously for a multi-Tribe party. I'd say play WtA with the translation guide to nWoD.

I'm an OWoD player and while I like a few things from VtR, I can never say I'd recommend it to someone. Mostly because of the system. It's terrible. Combat is so hyperlethal it's kinda scary. It also players more like DnD. And I don't like how few dice you have to toss and how high the target number is.
Also character creation has a lot less options it feels like since you're so limited on dots to blow on backgrounds. The system has its merits but dear god do I hate the combat system. I also like that the books are rather explicit in mechanics.

It also is nice that it can interact with other splats extremely well. VtR feels more like a political game than VtM. Especially since there's no Sabbat in VtR. Feels like there's too many bloodlines though. Jesus fuck is there too many. I do like the notion of Blood Potency too but I'm not sure why they kept Diablerie in the game with all vampires created equal.

VtR is neat but feels like it lost so much, and just went for nothing but pure Camarilla.

She had managed to hook up with another Beast (also a PC) and tried to introduce them by surprising him in the coffee shop. They eventually get in an argument where he demands answers and questions her motives while she gives vague, but insulting answers because by her own admission she has no idea how Beasts work and thought she could get more information by introducing them. He was extremely unhappy about not getting straight answers and being insulted by someone who from his perspective had murdered one of her own companions in broad daylight, so he decided to scare her by using the Flying or Falling Nightmare on her. She beat the roll and now they are gonna throw down.

The best part about it was he activated the nightmare by telling her she didn't have wings. She started to fly in response. He is not built for combat and she is obviously very powerful.

My description was pretty bad, but I hope I got it across alright.

VtR 2e vampires take bashing damage from almost everything in existence that isn't fire. They also heal 2 bashing per blood point. Once they can spend like 3 or 4 blood per turn they start being able to clear out an entire health track's worth of bashing damage in one round.

You still get power for eating others. Unique Disciplines, BP increases, stat increases.

You can heal a lot in Vamp, but you can still get got pretty easily. It's not reasonable for most vampires to heal, boost an attribute, and use Physical Disciplines all in the same turn.

Vampires are tough, but still killable. Especially by other Vamps, where you can get hit for massive damage. Someone with Protean and Vigor can hit like a truck, and healing 1L a turn isn't going to save you from that.

One success always suceeds. More Sucesses improve the success until 5+, which means you succeed super good. Extended and contested rolls change this, but when it's just one character rolling, one success means you do what you set out to do.

This is why in nWoD, you base dice pools in groups of about 3: Normally you can get at least one success with a dice pool of 3.

No they don't. By RAW, 4 successes produces the exact same result as 1 success,(unless the roll is contested, at which point it's "1 success more than the other guy produces the exact same result as 4 successes more than the other guy) for everything except combat.

"Target number" is the number that you have to meet or exceed on the die for the die to be showing a success. The target number for everything in nWoD (outside of particular Mummy powers) is 8. Legal reasons? The only 3+ damage melee weapons are fire axes and chainsaws (which do a minimum of SIX damage), whereas 3-damage firearms are like, AK-47s. You can't walk around with that shit in most places.

I feel like that's the problem with WoD's dice pool system. Unless you're the ST at the table, it's hard to quantify what makes a 3 success situation better than a 1 success situation if 5 is supposed to be the Dramatic Success. However, you can't reduce the number for the Dramatic Success, because then it becomes more likely and 2E has many abilities that depend on that mind of reduction.

Just saying "Make the success slightly better until you hit 5" COULD work, but at that point it just comes off as needlessly fiddly, and new STs are going to want examples.

And that's one shooter. Sure, the vamp can likely kill that shooter, but to heal up they're also going to need to spend a rather considerable amount of resources. You can't actually just grab a random person off the street and assault them for blood. Although I suppose you could do that with the person shooting at you. Either way, time and resources are wasted, and that's assuming your assailant doesn't get lucky and only does what amounts to minimum damage.

Then again, I say this but I once fought as a 6HP Promethean and went All Out with every attack against a slug that did Aggravated damage.

I like this. A lot. Werewolves are already master hunters, so why not make them "Hunter"s, reckoning style?
Refocus Vigil to the more local and small-scale threats, like slashers, and let the bigwoofs take on the "OHGODWHATTHEFUCKIT'SEATINGTHEWHOLEGODDAMNBUILDING" kind of stuff, like elder vampires.

Aren't there already real-life depictions of werewolves as hunters of other monsters? Or am I mis-remembering something?

For the games, it's really a roleplaying franchise and the way Troika structured Bloodlines - a strongly affected experienced based on character choice and roleplaying (as well as a focus on good writing) - is not something you see a lot of focus on (because it's hard).

Yeah, this is what I meant. It doesn't cost much to print books and cWoD's the property that has more "name power" in video games. We'll see a 4E of the cWoD games with tie in to video games, and nWoD will probably still get books, and occasional references in the video games.

It'd be weird to dump out OPP, since aside from schedule woes, things are working fine. It'd be nice if Paradox decided to give them more support.

Nah. They bought the CREATION but not the means of CREATING. Very few Demiurges make more than one Promethean in their lifetime. Very few Prometheans make more than one Promethean in their lifetime. It's not a great pact to be making.

About the Paradox deal:

I am not invested in specific backgrounds or metaplots. I have always been more interested in the atmosphere of the IP rather than autist problems like the number of clans. My opinion is that Paradox should have complete creative freedom in the future. When they publish video games, they should feel free to pick and choose material from all tabletop incarnations and even add new concepts of their own devising. What made Bloodlines good was Troika's work, not the specific IP.

If the autists are considered too valuable to toss aside for oodles of cash from new less toxic demographics, then just rebrand the tabletop games and treat them as completely separate from the "one" world of darkness. Everyone is happy.
