If a "ribbon" is an ability added for flavor rather than for serving a mechanical purpose, what would the opposite of a ribbon ability be?

Something like a meta currency, fate points and the like, bennies that you can spend, the likes. You get a in game benefit but there is nothing at work in setting, if you disregard "luck" or "fate" and similar immeasurable nebulous concepts.

This has always irked me about fate points but whatever I guess. Meta currencies give more confidence to players when their rolls fail.

Arguably fate points are there to serve a flavor role (genre emulation) even if they don't represent a particular thing in-universe.

But by a strict reading like that, the inverse of a ribbon is composed entirely of abilities and mechanics that serve solely to make the system function, representing no genre or flavor whatsoever.

So things like the baseline of 10 for Armor Class in D&D, which represents literally nothing, but makes the attack vs. defense math work.

Isn't the ten the character being a moving target? I also remember Objects having 5AC, at least in some instances, so it's half the chance to botch the attack and half the target having normal clothing plus moving slightly, even when not evading purposefully.

Well it really depends on what you consider "the opposite" which gets switched up between inverse and converse and all sorts of things.

It COULD be core systems, or what >>43345026 says, or it could be crunch added entirely for crunch's sake.
