Sup /tg/. I'm making a setting where magic is powerful but also dangerous and restrictive. You can only cast it if you are born with it.

BUT

There are several ways to become a Wizard even if you are not naturally talented. They are all terrible. Possibly brutal, torturous, sick and demented, hideously boring or expensive; I want a bunch of these.

What must you do to get the power of magic if you are not born with it? Tell me true.

Trade body parts for it. Trade other people's body parts for it. Make agreements exchanging future behavior/activity for power. Go 10 years without ejaculating. Or go forever without breaking your hymen (it's always harder on women, sorry). Develop an extremely organized rack of highly magical ingredients and hope no one knocks it over. Find some particularly magical artifacts and hope nobody figures out that you need a specific stick to cast a specific spell. There's always some bullshit out there.

How about pack magic like in Drakengard? Ones' magic is akin to what one can bind with ones' self while requiring a sacrament of the body, whether the ability to talk or ones' ability to age. You can take it in different direction like ones' specific body part belonging to the fey/demon/elemental/magic force, like a vessel or something.

I always thought the Bartimaeus Trilogy had a cool idea where all magic was based on Demon summoning and Demons fucking hate it. If you fuck up even a little in the complex rituals the demon just kills you and goes back home.

Frees the person from the physical bond and allows for true astral form mastery (Basically releasing your soul to grab magical power from extradimensional sources that would otherwise be unavailable)

The tradeoff would be that your soul would have little to no protection from outside influence during this astral projection, so you'd be frequently playing tug of war with your soul with all kinds of extraplanar things that want to rape it and eat it.

On the right track, but the heart's too obvious and too "save-or-die." Pituitary gland makes way more sense, but has the same problem.

What you want is an organ transplant that
a) Leaves the "donor" with maybe a week at most to live (if you're dumb enough to leave them alive, even with their magic gone, that's a vendetta plot-hook right there)
b) Won't actually *kill* you if the transplant fucks up, but *will* leave you fucked up.
c) Sounds vaguely plausible (magical kidneys would be a bit silly)

Greg Stolze has something like that in his Reign setting, where most form of magic demand a seriously costly sacrifice to get your power.
One of the mage traditions for example, had them lose their lower jaw. But the power they got was an extremely powerful form of blood magic that allowed the empress complete control over her subjects (by having blood samples of any politician, essentially, she could ensure obedience) so they live in luxury and are fed by personal attendants, etc.
Still : no lower jaw.

I don't remember all the others, but it was in the same vein. Maybe some Anon can pullout his Reign stuff to help you out.

you could keep your powers a secret, but that means limiting yourself by only using magic discreetly. or you could live with the risk of being targeted, with the benefit of being able to throw around as much magic as you want. which path a wizard chooses would come down to how confident they feel.

Graft limbs and organs of magical beings onto yourself. No protection from organ rejection, and it actually has to connect to your nervous system.

Thus, extra limbs and completely foreign ones like tails usually require that your body is all sorts of mutated to begin with. Also, drug industry to fight organ rejection.

Form pacts that share lifeforce. Hierarchy is determined by average lifespan and force of will when there is little difference. Forming a pact with really old and powerful creatures might mean you retain autonomy while getting the power, but your severely cutting into your own life just keeping them alive.

If too many pacts are made, the connection melts your minds together into abominations.

Ingest processed crystals made from the souls of highly magical creatures. Small risk of hauntings, partial loss in general perception as they are numbed, and constant meditation is required to keep the powers from running rampant within your own body. Strong emotion may cause a temporary or permanent metamorphosis into the half-magical creature.

Form a symbiotic relationship with a feeble creature as they connect to your brainstem. Said creatures are known to hijack and assume direct control. The more powerful magics come from creatures who have devoured their fair share of brainstems.

Take a harmful concoction of herbs and chemicals that temporarily turns you into a magical battery. Unless you build defenses for it, other people can use your reserves just as easily as you. Only actual mages have enough time studying the magic in their own body to build defenses.
