So, I know how to model and i want to make some mods for my 40K figures. The person at my local games workshop store has offered to help with modding my figures once i've printed the parts.

Where can i find 3d scans of sprues?

Don't exist. You'd have to buy and scan them all yourself.

At my LGS there two guys that scan and print.
I've seen chimeras, rhinos, land raiders, drop pods and a thunderhawk.
Don't know if they share them, but they are really good.

When you say you know how to model, do you mean you know how to model in 3D or to build models as in miniatures and such?
If you know how to model in 3D, you just need to take a few measurements with a caliper and maybe a picture to get a proper shape for whatever attaching you're looking to build for.

You do get real scale measurements with a caliper. If you really need exact dimensions, take a high resolution of the piece, then adjust the image to meet exact scale. Cross check with a caliper. Once you have it, import it as a reference image and model the part in question.

You would need to measure every part then. Receivers, Triggers, Hands, Containers, Model Sizes, Vehicle Sizes, Stubbers, Etc..

Its alot easy to just model with the scan in scene as reference then you can check in real time against the object your attempting to replace.

What for? If you're just making mods, you just get the cross sectional area and build from there.

I don't think you understand and that's fine. In short i've done this before for work when doing miniatures for other company's however there have been times i have had to guess like your suggesting and thats when you get bad results.

Yes, I'm not really following as to why it's a problem. You should be able to get relative mass with a series of scaled pictures and can use a texture mapping trick to avoid some lens distortion by zooming if that's a concern.

How complicated are the parts you're thinking about making?

maybe I'm just your simple engineering student but I just went with the simple method of using a ruler and drawing on paper to get a design then used the programs in this order Sketchup > Repetier > makerbot to make my first mod on my schools FREE 3d printer. The pic related is a turret mod for my leman russ. assuming it is dimensioned right when I go to print next week it will be a issue of reprinting to confirm that my scaling is right. If it works well I will post it some time next week for you all to see.
