Okay, can someone help explain to me how the fuck the plane of Carceri in Planescape works? I swear I've read the description of it more than a few times, and it still doesn't make any sense.

What's even more confusing is that, even if there's an infinite number of spheres per layer that are ordered depending on their size, what size sphere is Agathys, as there's only one sphere on its layer? Which spheres surround it?

Or am I just overthinking things that aren't supposed to be comprehensible?

It's exactly as big as it needs to be.
Things like size and distance can change without warning in the Planes unless something like a Power is influencing it. As such the single sphere in Agathys is as large as is needed to contain its prisoners.

That said I imagine it'd probably be the size of a small continent at least.

on a different note, how'd one move from one layer to the next? This question applies to more than just Carceri. Certain planes describe how you can get from one layer to the next, though for others -if the layers truly are infinite- there isn't any edge to drop off of and onto any lower planes.

Does one will themselves onto the lower layers? Or are there physical parts in the upper planes that lead down to the lower planes?

Mathematicians are usually cool with it once they can talk reasonably about set sizes and comparisons. So, if you need to wrap your head about the infinite, hit us up and someone can probably help.

In the most brief explanation, there are some things that don't really matter to the infinite if you add them in. They just get lost in the crowd. Other things become crowds in and of themselves. Other things are noticeable in any quantity. It's like a supermarket - you don't notice the produce section if you never go for fruit; no matter how many types of bacon they have, it's not that significant anyway; and any number of assholes who block a whole isle is too many already, even if it's just the one guy in the whole store. None of that speaks of localized or generalized densities, relative frequencies, or isolated patterns, which is the general contexts which infinities run off of. I can explain those to you, if you want.

My understanding is that, rather than there being edges, there are holes - occasionally portals, such as lie within Sigil, but also physical holes in the plane that may be circumstantially open, which allow you to drop into the next layer.

Okay going by your picture and his description I'm reasonably sure I have worked out how the fuck this is suppose to work.

In pic related every red sphere is Othrys, orange is Cathrys, yellow is Minethys, green is Colothys, blue is Porphatyx, and the lone red one is Agathys.
Looking at it from the outside you only see the red sphere. On the blue sphere the inside of the green sphere would serve as the sky if not for the "every layer has a red sky" thing.
Each sphere has a limited surface area, but since you can walk to any sphere of the same color (presumably) due to some 4+ dimensional bullshit (that you probably wouldn't notice unless trying to map the bastards) they, for most if not all practical purposes have unlimited area.
As for Agathys, unless a size is given it can be as big as you want, provided it is the smallest of the six spheres.

Yes, that pretty much works.

You can do some strange things to Agathys, but I don't know if they did them, so I'll leave those out. If you don't mind asymptotic breakpoints, you can have places where, if you go in one direction, you end up somewhere else, but if you go over it in another direction, you end up on another sphere (or another layer on the same sphere). These kinds of things would... probably not help.
