Masters around here.

Where do you guys take inspiration for your sessions? What was the most strange story you added into your setting?
Because lately I'm taking a lot of cues of pro wrestling shows for my DnD sessions.

I GM Rogue Trader and I've ripped more than one warp random encounter straight from ST:TNG.

I just do whatever pops into my head during the week, though admittedly this means some sessions have a hiatus if I want to make them extra special.

Last session (the final one at that) in my western campaign featured a giant mech fight with an Oliver Cromwell lich for the One Ring, so they could stop him taking over America once and for all

Lots of media, the fact I seem to have tastes different from my players helps.

But plenty from the players themselves. Ask them where they want the campaign to go, what the next session should be like. If it was part of a franchise, which one would they want it to be part of?

I take my time putting a campaign together, so I end up drawing inspiration from all sorts of different places.

For example, my current 5e maritime piracy game was first inspired by some guy on /tg/ who pointed out how easy it is to run a sea-based game. Then I saw a map of the Outer Hebrides which gave me the idea of a maze-like area of rocks and small islands that functions as a minotaur pirate haven. Then I binged Yu Yu Hakusho and decided to throw in a pirate fighting tournament, which of course led to me having to come up with an NPC sorceress powerful enough to organise a fighting tournament for pirates. Then I binged Black Sails and threw in a brutal, hypocritical naval authority.

The main antagonist is in fact a pirate lich partially inspired by Mil Muertes.

Off topic, but everyone has to watch Lucha Underground.

I knew I saved this for a reason.

Honestly for the most part I improvise, by which I mean I get an idea for a really powerful scene or even just a single visual and work my way backwards from there to put the players into that specific scenario.

Lucha Underrground made me want to, at some point, do an wrestling campaign.
But not one where characters are playing roles for the audience, but one where the character actually might be a ancient warrior trying to stop and evil spirit in a ring of a wrestling promotion.
