Really distant future stuff. Humanity spread across the galaxy, technology so advanced /tg/ spergs out and calls it soft sf, transhumanism, that shit. There's Eclipse Phase, and... that's about it. I want to see more takes on that kind of thing, and preferably from somebody who isn't pushing an agenda.

It's interesting you mention Eclipse Phase as an example. When I started reading your post I was thinking more along the lines of The Culture, The Xeelee Cycle, Endymion, (the latter parts of) The Forever War or even the Orion's Arm project. Eclipse Phase is about space stations, I assumed you wanted settings where humanity routinely builds ringworlds.

Because sometimes it's hidden under a thin veneer of grimness. I kinda liked the compromise approach in Andromeda for that. Yes, humans dominate the high-guard, no, they've got basically no chance at becoming better than the Vedrans.

I sorta forgive EP for that because unlike say Blue Rose the ideology pushed actually makes a certain amount of sense in-setting. The behaviour of the devs is pretty insufferable though.

Hmm. I'm gonna be a tit and say Howardian Fantasy and Space Opera. ...sure, most retroclones have an 'Assumed Setting' and fairly high focus on rather straightforward combatants, but it just doesn't quite feel the same.

In terms of Space Opera there is Traveller (okay), Stars without Number (questionable) and if you squint the various FFG SWRPGs. Das it.

There is also Cyberpunk 2020, but it's pretty far down on the Give A Shit About Scale for most people. Also suffers from similar issues.

I'd still love to see something Culture-esque for a science fiction RPG; playing as the agents of Contact or Special Circumstances, meddling with other cultures as something half-way between a diplomat and a secret agent, that sort of thing. Clearly you could run it with some other system, and Eclipse Phase sort of scratches the same sort of itch ("what awful things must you do without society's knowledge in order to keep it going?"), but something which is about doing the dirty work for an otherwise utopian society would be a nice position to put players in.

Fading Suns? Baroque Space Opera for FATE exists too, but I don't know anything about it.

Modern day people (kids) find themselves in fantastical worlds that are pleasant and wonderful on the surface but dark and actually kinda evil underneath? I'd say Wonka is in that too.

Personally I'd like to see more early/ancient human stuff, regardless of culture, just with more fantasy magic and races involved. Paleolithic man with dragons, native americans vs. Orcs, vikings and elves etc.

There's an entire Fate World of Adventure dedicated precisely to that genre, called Nest. It's even divided into three "Kingdoms", each of which represents a common archetype for the types of magical, allegorical realms kids go to learn lessons. "Epoch" is a fantasy world with giants and monsters, which is mainly about teaching kids the meaning of courage (inspired primarily by Narnia). "Bungledyne" is a whimsy steampunk paradise populated by bumbling but good natured animal people dominated by inventors and scientists - it's about learning confidence and creativity and about the wonders of the world (can't tell any direct literary inspiration here, TBH). "Conundrum" is a realm of logical paradoxes and puzzels, knights in color coded suits of armor who either always lie or always speak the truth, mathematical concepts made manifest and animals which discourse philosophy (every person in Conundrum follows a personal religion-like code called their "Riddle", which dictates their actions, like "always speak the truth", "always contradict what has just been said", etc.). It's obviously very strongly influenced by Wonderland.

The story is about the adults who once visited those realms as kids being suddenly pulled from their dreary everyday lives to return to it and find the kingdoms in ruin and threatened by a mysterious enemy.

The campaign is very cleverly designed so that there are actually THREE possible enemies, all of which fit the story perfectly but are discovered by following different clues. Each enemy is also a thoughtful deconstruction of one of the main themes of this kind of story, inspired primarily by the Neil Gaiman Sandman story "A Game of You". All in all, I think it's definitely one of the better written Worlds of Adventure).

I've been developing a Science Fantasy Space Opera setting where humanity turned the stars themselves into gods (called, in an astounding moment of originality, "Godstars") and created a galactic empire. It fell, but even the survivors still have access to ships the size of planets which use stabilized black holes to hold themselves together, nukes that obliterate entire solar systems by creating artificial supernovas, entire planets terraformed into surreal paradises and hellish training grounds, Godstars given massive armor and weapons to turn themselves into "Gunstars" and other such over-the-top sci-fi stuff.

Unfortunately, humanity is being chased by the subjugated legions of zombie stars who themselves follow the Milky Way's central black hole turned into an impossibly-powerful Titan (humanity got a little too ambitious)

basically imagine the industrial revolution as played out by a race of spider people, its almost unheard of as a setting. really all i can think of is a fire upon the deep (medieval hive mind wolves) and a deepness in the sky (spiders in the rapid advancement and hardships of industrialization)

Colonial era. Big steamships, conquering unknown lands and mass industrialization.

Cold war espionage. Threat of nuclear war, spy vs. spy and a battle of ideals. The premise builds on itself.
