Making a Pandorax inspired list to supplement my Deathwing and I have a rule question: if a unit comes out automatically on turn X, what happens if I attach something that can come in earlier turn to it ?

If I take some Grey Knight Terminators with the Nemesis Strike Force and a Deathwing Redemption Force, pick the second turn for my Deathwing Assault but put the DW HQ into the GKT squads and GK HQs into the DWT squads can they all roll for Deep Striking first turn and those who won't come in Deep Strike Automatically on the 2nd turn ?

There is no good clear rules answer.

The clearest interpretation with the least number of loose ends is that any independent characters become "part of the unit" and as long as they are capable of deploying in the same way as the unit use whatever method the unit does on the turn the unit arrives

I was thinking about making a WE allied contingent to plug my CQC hoke in my IW gun-line. But having second thoughts about WE rules. Basically the list for the allied detachment would be 500 pts:
Centurion with jump pack, assault squad and jetbike squadron with plasma cannon. 500 pts on the dot. How is WE on the table? Would I be better off with some other legion? Maybe AL?

I kind of liked it better when flyers were a strictly Apocalypse thing and Interceptor-like abilities were extremely rare.

I'm going to play with my Dark Angels for the first time ever and it's gonna be 2k points against Eldar. I have absolutely no idea what to bring against them as Dangels. I was thinking of going with full tactical squads in rhinos with two devastator squads and a deredeo.

Any general tips on list building versus eldar? Since I'm a 30k collector, I have access to pretty much all forgeworld options except spartans.

The thing with Eldar is that they are murderrape to vehicles first and foremost, so what you have there is pretty damn good. Make the boxes cover for your Tacs, park either MissileDevs or Gravdevs someplace well-protected, and have the Deredeo stand still and pump out autocannon barrages.

Vindicator laser destroyer is also a decent option. It's quite fond of blowing holes in Wave Serpents, so park it and overcharge it.

I don't even get why Skyfire weapons get to fire normally at skimmers and jetbikes. If they're supposed to be close enough to the ground a lot of the time to be assaulted and shot at by regular infantry, then why the fuck are they high enough that they can be shot by AA guns? It just seems like an arbitrary punishment, particularly for factions like the Dark Eldar that are basically all Deep Striking skimmers, jetbikes and jump infantry who get absolutely rekt by the ridiculously powerful AA guns necessary after IG and Necrons got the ability to just spam flyers.

Just make flyers skimmers (possibly with the caveat that they can't be assaulted) and call it a day. The entire process of "flyers raped everything, so we made ridiculously overpowered AA guns, so now flyers are useless unless your opponent didn't/couldn't bring them and shoot them down before they even get to fire once" is just completely fucking retarded. Almost as if flyer rules were designed for games with considerably larger forces on either side that were never intended to be balanced and where you were expected to bring fucking everything and have enough firepower that you could handle it somehow.

Hell, Land Speeders make even less sense now, because they can somehow be charged and shot at normally, while a fucking Stormraven can't, despite the latter being an airborne reconnaissance vehicle and the latter being a goddamn troop transport!

Sicarans are the only thing that kinda works, and Serpent Shield lels at it.

My philosophy was always "pump lascannon at it till three hit", so I find a pair of those works well. On the other hand, it's two Vindicators to take down a fucking transport, but I just can't seem to get Sicarans to do their job right.

Castigator does handle that well, but don't expect it to do much else. You'll both be tied up stabbing each other.

Maybe the Knight-Acheron or whatever the new one's called could do it. That lascutter seems like it could be nasty.

Nope. Think 4e CSM codex makes some hints at crone worlds having people living on them before CSM settles in the Eye (in Bile's entry), but not much else. It's one of those things GW hasn't given two shits about, since there's no models for them.

A house rule employed by my lgs is that the C'tan can swap it's shot one up or one down after rolling

So you roll a 3 and if the number 3 power is shitty or not helpful at the time you can modify it to the number 2 or 4 powers.

Roll a 6 and you can swap for either 5 or 1, etc.

I feel this is how the book should have done it, C'tan are so lackluster with or without without their random shooting

It's Dazzle Camo. It may not hide that he's there, but it makes it hard to get a good bead on him with how it glints at the slightest light. They just didn't feel like blinding the viewer, so they kept that part out of the art.

Yeah there's some psychic powers that daemons really need to push them over the edge, but that doesn't mean you aren't getting fucked most of the time

Hell I wish they'd make cursed earth the primaris because summoning spam is so broken and hard to play against that if my rolls for cursed earth start really going south, all of a sudden I show up to a local game with a near unbeatable list that I'm not even that interested in really playing

So, Orks fight against each other all the time. Chaos does the same. Imperium has little wars, counter-orders, and general internal rivalries. Necrons are divided among dynasties. Eldar have multiple Craftworlds. What would be the reason for Tau to fight against themselves on a tabletop? 2 Ethereals having messy disagreements?

If chaos wasn't so toothless in the fluff all the time, I think any chance of unleashing a greater daemon at any point is probably not something you want to be fucking with. Especially when you consider that harlequins aren't super special daemon-invulnerable super-heroes either (despite how stupid repelling a keeper by your lonesome is), the changeling is shown at least once deceiving all the harlequins by pretending to be the solitaire until he kills the other harlequin and summons the masque.

Also, the Farseer doesn't as much dodge the weapon, but instead subtly manipulate the strands of fate that shot aimed at him/her simply just miss, which is the fucking function the Rune Armor Eldar seers wear.

Are Tau worth the hate they seem to get? I play a Rogue Trader game with one guy that is really deep into the lore and into the wargame with his Imperial Guardsman and he HATES Tau. He says he shows no mercy to any one that plays Tau and will do anything to crush them. Also he hates that they have "plot armor" in the lore because some people wrote lore where the IoM destroyed Tau forces, but other people retcon'd it? Saying that it wasn't the Tau forces?

Also keep in mind, this guy plays Explorator in our game and is attempting to melt down Archeotech using three meltas and attempting to make armor out of it all. Yes, you read that all correctly.

There has never been any solid numbers on how numerous the eldar are. Also, there being still (relatively) many of them, doesn't matter shit, if there are more of them dying, becoming outcasts, or joining the DE, than there are eldar being born. That still makes them a dying race, even if there were hundreds of billions of them around.

I've seen the whole thing about Harlequin initiation ritual consisting of being possessed by a daemon mentioned a few times, but neevr seen any source for it. Not like there really was much fluff on how Harlequins work before they got a codex, and even that doesn't really go into detail on how you become one. I'm retty sure the whole fight off possession thing is just one of those pieces of fanon that get repeated often enough that people mistake it for canon fluff.

To be fair, the "comfortable slave" lifestyle is appealing to some people, the sterilization thing is all unreliable narration and the canon has mentioned gue'vesa having families and bringing their kids up entirely within the Tau empire, so it's likely the only people who get sterilized (if any) are prisoners of war forced to convert or die.

When we first started playing with him, I started to look more into the war game because it looked interesting and a fun way to get some perspective on our RPG. I don't think so. Tau do have plot armour but so does every other faction in 40k (see all the BL stories about a single squad of Space Marines single-hangedly stopping Chaos incrusions, or the stuff about Draigo being thrown into the Warp and not only surviving but bithcslapping the Chaos Gods themselves). With Tau it's more obvious because their empire is very small by 40k standards so theoretically they could be completely destroyed even without some setting-shattering apocalypse, and because the Tau narrative is that they're a young and expanding empire so suffering a huge defeat and getting pushed back would not fit the narrative.

That's not to say they have never suffered defeats, thought. For example, they got their asses throughly handed to them when they invaded the Knight World of Voltoris in the Apocalpsye Warzone: Damocles book, and their earlier phase of expansion did indeed get blunted and pushed back by the Damocles Gulf Crusade (although Imperial players still consider that to be an example of plot armour because the Tau weren't exterminated by the invincible Imperial war machine). Only retcon of a Tau defeat I can think of was a timeline mention in the Matt Ward Marine codex about a bunch of Marine chapters pretty much single-handedly stopping the Tau 3rd sphere expansion, whic got retconned in the Tau codex to them only wiping the Tau from a single sector, and the Tau managing to take several less-defended sectors in the meantime (also, in the current fluff, the 3rd sphere expansion, much like Abaddon's 13th Black Crusade has only just begun at the point the timeline ends). The 2nd sphere expansion/Damocles Gulf Crusade also got soem retcons, but more about the timeline (it now takes place several hundred years earlier) than the result (both in old and new fluff the crusade easily pushed the Tau back beyond the Damocles Gulf, but then slowed down and eventually got called off).

Water and Earth caste yes (especially Earth, who are pretty much built like fantasy dwarves: short but broad). Fire caste are described as being tall for Tau and roughly the same height as humans (a little shorter on average, but not a huge difference; the average fire caste Tau would probably be a few inches shorter than the average human). Air caste are really tall, like over 10 feet, but extremely thin and lightly built.
Not sure about Ethereals, but based on the models they're fairly tall, probably taller than average human.

Dude, they 100% manipulate monkeigh to their own end. There's an entire series of novels about them doing exactly that. They prioritise their race over all others, because doing that is literally their job. They help other races for the same reason CWE do; because not doing means the entire galaxy goes kaput. The bigger you are, the more waaarghs hit you, the more hive fleets hit you, the more chaos raids hit you, the more necron dynasties try to throw you off their lawn, and so on. The imperium is stretched to breaking point not because they're incompetent, but because they're just so big. Tau are good-ish on the 40k scale, because they don't want to kill, rape or eat (or in case of Dark Eldar all three) you, and actually give you a choise of joining them peacefully before they send out their army to conquer your planet.

In any other setting, however, they'd be the villains or at best morally questionable. They are an expansionistic empire that, while politely asking you to join them for the greater good, will not take no for an answer and respond to you declining their offer by forcibly annexing your planet.

The fluff background for my Guard regiment is that their world got forcibly annexed by the Tau and they start rolling out their space communism (and all the forced sterilisation that comes with it) so the PDF goes full-on muhajadeen. Actually they've never done that in canon. In fact, there's a short story about how much better things got for a PDF's family once the Tau actually brought some living standards only for insurgency to happen anyway.

The planet didn't start resisting till later out of sheer dogmatic loyalty to EMPRA (an anonymous source was sending out transmissions inciting insurgency and promising deliverance from 'Tau oppression' even as Tau provided drinkable water and homes that weren't piles of ruin.

It's in the Tau's best interest to treat Guevesa well. They want them repopulating and happy. There's even a point about how one of the PDFs kids wants to grow up and join the Guevesa. You don't get new recruits for the Greater Good by being tyrants.

FFG's Daethwatch RPG mentions Tau sterilising parts of the population (the ones that dissent againt the Tau rule) on one of the planets they've annexed. However, the scenario in the books isn't very typical for the Tau Empire, as the area they're fighting is pretty far from the rest of the empire (they consider the invasion to the area as a test for other methods of expansion than the concentric spheres they normally use) and stuck fighting an Imperial crusade and a Tyranid hive fleet with limited supplies, and thus have limited manpower to police possibly rebellious worlds.

The standard Tau method for dealing with very large populations on annexed planets seems to be shipping some of the people to multiple less-populated planets. That's what they did on Agrellan and some other planets they conquered during the 3rd sphere expansion.

Something like that actually happens in one of the stories in the new Tau anthology. A Catachan regiment stationed on a planet that gets annexed by the Tau retreats to the jungles and goes full terrorirst on the Tau, attacking civilian targets and developing biological weapons which they threathen to unleash on major cities if the Tau don't leave the planet. It's a story in a Tau book so the Tau of course win in the end (or rather Kroot do; they Tau can't flush the Catachans out of the jungles, so they get a warsphere full of Kroot to help aince Kroot are at least as good at fighting in the jungle as Catachans are), but it does drive the Tau commander to the point of nervous breakdown, since tactis like that are pretty much the antithesis of the Tau idea of warfare. Also the Kroot apparently thought the Catachans were really cool, because they start to imitate their way of dress and speech, driving the commander further up the wall.

Commander Shadow. It's loosely based on some fluff on the Tau section in the 5th edition rulebook. It's a pretty good story, with a very Vietnam-style feel.

I believe the part about the Kroot at the end of the story was meant to imply they've gained the Catachan's memories by eating them (especially as the Kroot shaper calls the commander with the nicname the Catachan leader gave him), but since Kroot don't actually work like that (they're not like Space Marines who can gain memories by eating brains, and any new gens they pick up by eating things only manifest in the following generations) I choose to see it as them being so impressed by the Catachans' fighting ability they decided to honour them by adopting their way of speech (Kroot are very good at picking up new languages and have no problems speaking Gothic) and habit of wearing Rambo-style bandanas.

Rapier weapon batteries would be the best heavy support to take vs Eldar. Unlike you're other HS shit you can only ever lose 1 wound (marine) from it per attack (not including blast) so they're pretty resilient vs the D.

Castigator's are pretty good vs WK's but I'd say Lancer would be better. Castigators suffer a bit compared to vanilla knights as they can only ever charge what they shoot at.

If they only had a heavy-stubber they would be 100% better. That's the main reason I find the Archaron or whatever it's name is way better than any other of the Cerastus Knights.

If the board is pretty urban sit them on objectives and laugh as decent 4+ cover saves save 3 pt models from most fire. Pretending formations havent turned the game on its head is willful ignorance. The imbalance that has always been present in 40k just got extremely more extreme.
example: You bring a CSM, BA, IG, or pretty much any CAD to the flgs. The three guys chilling up there brought Skyhammer + Librarius with a Demi-Company, WraithHost + Scatbikes, and WarConvo with a Knight. Who is gonna have fun here, aside from a hyper-competitive retard that doesnt recognize he won on paper before anyone even set a model on the table?

I try to keep a fluffy/fun thing going, but its harder now than ever before. Fun players are getting turned off and leaving, competitive players are like pigs in shit, and people on the fence are getting not-so-subtley pigeonholed into playing formations/netlists.

It looks like the Nob box comes with five nobs but only one has a Power Klaw, 4 of them have poles but Idk which is a boss bole.

I hear ya boss, I play Forgeworld Ork Dread mob because of the models I like and am considering a Normal CAD with the Vulcha Formation at 1250 just because I like the Storm Boy (and Zagstruk) models.

My last match (5th ever) I got ruined by some hardcore Ultramarine player and after the match he apologized because he wasn't expecting my list to be fun.

We have a rematch this Sunday and he said he is bringing fluffy tyranids.

If only I could get magnets and learn to put them on my Deff Dreads by then. Double rokkits is not what I want anymore. I think triple klaw and a flamer would get me further. Wont matter once I get the models I need for my normal CAD though.

Check out the sprue images rather than the ones GW have painted up, they show what the kit actually contains. The nob kit comes with 3 klaws in it and shitloads of other options, seriously it's one of the best kits they've ever made. A bosspole is just any old pole with a fancy symbol on top that makes the nob stand out more and show who's boss, there's around 3 in the nobz kit with a DIY pole that lets you attach any of the clan symbols to it.

I was looking originally looking at the shokk and awe bundle for christmas but then I bought three boxes of Lootas, unfortunate I can't use them. I will probably put ~$250 towards the warbikers and tank bustas.

I need to pace myself though. My Nephew says the normal points for his group is 1850, as long as I can get around their by next summer I should be good. I want to get a couple small points games under my belt first.

The bigger problem is the ultra min max combos that exist. D weapon eldar, invisibility spam and other issues. Formations are not the problem, they just make existing ones worse.

Magnetizing is really easy, just make sure you get a hand drill with a bit that is the same size as your magnets. From there on it's as easy as drilling a hole and putting a magnet in it.
Regular 3mm neodym magnets are able to hold pretty big parts as long as they're made of plastic, but I'm not sure about deff dread arms as those extend from the model in almost a 90° angle in some cases. Just experiment some, magnets are dirt cheap.

Apparently he had the list formulated for another Ork player. I do admit I wish I had a FLGS near me.

He brought these four centurions with some level three psyker character and was able to reroll on everything because the centurions had gloves. It was really cool, just sucked to go against. He also had a dreadnought drop on in and wipe out my unit of 8 lootas on turn one. Turn two the same dreadnaught decimated my kanz.

I think I'll mostly be running this formation against a resident faggotlord IG player who always takes nothing but tanks in an unbound formation, and parks them right up against the tableedge, making a full AV13 or AV14 front wall. Sure, melta fucks them somewhat up, but when he has 15 of the fuckers parked up like that, even taking down 2 doesn't do much, when I'll just get blow to shit the following turn, and 60% of my army straight up can't damage them.

I feel like I'll probably take the formation, and never really utilize the "always hit the rear side" benefit, by just deepstriking them behind them in the first place or something, and just generally not be a faggot with them, except when I'm against this one guy. I want him to suffer.

It does, you always get that pose. However if you want them raised it;s easy to fix. Just put a small pin above and below the magnet. The pins stop the arms rotating downwards under their own weight.

Same. In my local area, we held a 40 man tournament that took an entrance fee of roughly the equivalent of 70€, to sort out "casuals" from the serious players.

The winner was an IG player, the close second was KDK, and the third was Eldar. Mind, this is post 7th edition Eldar.Closest Necron was 7th place, Tau scored 8th.

Nothing special in terms of restrictions either. At most 1 ally, or 2 detachments of the same army, 2250 points, forge world allowed, LOWs allowed... Using maelstrom missions, following standard point scoring from the rule book... Sure, luck could have something to do with it, but when you had to play 15 matches, it starts to even out.

I feel like /tg/ is just bad, and prefers blaming other things for their shortcomings, rather than accept that maybe, just maybe, they aren't as good as they would like. It is like any other game, honestly. People will constantly bitch about some faction, class, whatever, being "way too strong", and for some reason, they don't play it... Because they know it isn't about what they are playing, it is simply because they aren't good enough.

If I want to make my imperial guard tanks and armor look as if it came from a salvage yard and was then repaired and set to a new regiment. Would buying painted models on ebay and so long as its not super thick paint i just clean it spray some rust colors here and there, then use some chipping fluid over it all then paint it with my color scheme (likely a black, grey, or green combo or something), then I proceed to chip the paint. They mainly play against themselves since it is about an hour and a half to the nearest GW and there isnt a FLGS in the area.

The key is batch painting. For marines I do a 10 man squad at once. The idea is to break it down into a series of steps, and complete all those steps on every model before moving onto the next, eg

On some level, I sorta wish that there were more ways to affect the way melee fights flow, via maybe the position of the units or something, but it would probably just clutter up the phase too much.
It is still pretty annoying to me that a fight between a bunch of Wytches and Spesh Muhreens fundamentally works exactly the same as a fight between a bunch of orks and ig. They both just whack at each other, until the other group dies or fails morale, gets swept, and then dies.

Completely torn which legion to choose.

What Legions are you guys gonna start with the new 30k plastics coming out?

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards Death Guard atm, but I think Ultrasmurfs seem pretty cool too.

I love the tactical versatility that Ultra's get, but Death Guard's terrain fuckery and chemical weapons seem pretty fun.

I find the fact that Wytches lose to basic marines in melee to be rather annoying. They are supposed to be super fast, and super lethal melee fighters who can strike at the weak points of any armor before the wearer can even notice, after all. New Tyranid player here!

So after (poorly) painting and assembling my Carnifex I was wondering where I should go.

I was thinking about getting a box of warriors next as they are pretty cool models as well.

Also I have seen a lot of lists with Hive Tyrants. They look sick so I wouldn't mind picking one up.

Do armies usually run Hormagaunts or Termagants? Is there a ratio to keep in mind?

Being a poorfag this will take me a while to accumulate but I am trying to get to around 1000 points before I take to the table.

You will need a tyrant no matter what. So make that your next buy, and make him a winged one with twin linked devourers.
Rest is up to you, termagants are very popular. Tyranids aren't really a beginner friendly race, so watch plenty of bat reports to learn how to play.

I am returning after 3years of not playing, mostly a CSM player, wanted to try something new.
I see lots of hoards and MCs where I play, hence the 2 Thunderfire and obvious lots of Grav. Bikes do what Bikes do best, and Black Knights are my CC unit. White Scar Librarian goes with Centurions for normal shenanigans, all in a Drop Pod. Inquisitor is solely there for the servo skull utility. Any ideas on swaps?

Tyranids are in kind of a shit position right now as a faction. Cruddace has raped them of everything that once made them fun and interesting. If you want to win games you are forced to play pretty much a single build, in which you simply spam as many of those aforementioned flying hive tyrants with devourers as possible.

There is some slight hope for the future though, so don't be discouraged, and if you play casual games with friends rather than competitive ones it's not as gloomy as all that.

So how does /tg/ paint its minis?

The dude at GW insists on the painting being done once the mini if fully assembled, but it leaves a lot of unpainted areas, and it makes precision painting difficult.
I have a friend who paints everything with the parts still attached to the plastic kit. He gets good results, but the seams between the parts when the mini gets glued are visible as fuck.

So, how do you guys do it?

The wrath of the hive mind is a good box set to pick up. Try and get it from a reseller or on ebay for at least 20% off MSRP. Everything in it is useful for a new Nid player. Comes with a Tyrant, a Tervigon, 3 Warriors and 20 Termas.

If you wanna go full swarm the Swarm box set is also good value model wise, but swarm nids is bad so only get it if your really want a bunch of bugs.

Shows how small minded you are. The only think nids can deal with is ranged D weapons and Melee D weapons on vehicles, otherwise you can build a nid list around anything except pyrovores and lictors.

You can't do 12 TL plasma shots with white scars, but all their bikes get skills rider and grav spam (alongside the new relic that gives the user +1 BS and him and the rest of the unit ignores cover) is much scarier to most armies.

That said RW have a lot of support to make up for killing themselves on terrain and gets hot! They can becoming incredibly tanky with the rerollable jink saves and darkshroud land speeder giving them +1 to cover (and no overwatch from the enemy when you want to get stuck in) meaning you'll never be without a 3+ rerollable when near it, for only 80 points too!

RW bikers are clearly more stylin' too.

I fully assemble before painting. Generally anywhere I can't easily get a brush won't be easily visible anyway. Like the classic example of a bolter close across the chest, really only the top bit of the eagle is visible so that's fine.

Sammael, Command squad with all the gubbins, dark shroud, two other bike squads minimum and maybe a flyer or librarian on a bike. Land speeders and attack bikes are good for holding objectives and popping vehicles, there's not much of a difference between the two really and either do well in those roles.

Most lists these days can't handle hordes of stuff. Nids can do hordes, they and race up the field faster than eldar, they can reach melee with armies that don't get themselves up for melee and wreck.

In an edition were stupid players think there's no option besides shooting, you get to melee and win, automatically. The shift in the meta has made using these tactics and many units nids have extremely viable, you just have to pull the 5 flyrants out your ass.

This started with Dark Crusade. The end of Tau campaign has O'Kais (the Commander) taking the remaining humans of the planet (forgot its name) to sterilization because they rebelled against the Tau mandate.

Later, one of the FFG books had a line regarding sterilization.

Nothing in the codexes or novels ever said a line about sterilization. If it indeed happens, it's so rare it's not even worthy mentioning in the larger scope

What gear should the bike unites run?

Not a huge fan of Psykers, at low points I will avoid em if I can. Do they offer anything critical or OP for the bikes? Which flyer would you recommend?

I got 10 of the regular d-gun guys, and 5 of the flamer dudes. My original idea with them when I assembled them (before the new dex was released) was to advance the d-gun guys as a sort of "wall of ghosts" while the flamer guys would be supporting them against any melee forces that might try to tarpit the d-gun guys.

Big time, yeah.
The box is in favor of shooty forces, so some things are right out, but right now I am torn between Deathguard, Iron Warriors, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion.
Alpha Legion: Tricksy as fuck, flexible and with some neat options, but their scheme is difficult to paint.
Iron Warriors: Easy to paint and some great shooting rules, but needs vehicles to really shine and is *the* most played legion.
Death Guard: Footslogging, hard as balls and with devastating toys, but their scheme is ugly and unit selection seems to favor spamming
Word Bearers: Tons of cool shit, *very* good unique rules and a huge selection of useful characters; but pretty melee centric overall.

I'm actually kinda glad Sons of Horus have such crap rules, otherwise they'd be part of that list as well.

Before any upgrades you can take Sammy, two unites of 6 bikers, 3 Black Knights, a dark shroud and a dark talon for just under 900 points.

I think that would be an amazing starting point for any bike army. More points = more bikes.
