>Developing: Swedish publisher Paradox has purchased “White wolf and all properties” from EVE Online firm CCP – effectively putting paid to the latter’s long-planned release of a World Of Darkness MMO. This also means that Paradox now owns Vampire: The Masquerade.

Also, Ck2 can be fun sure, but it's still pretty bad and every DLC for a while already has only made it worse

I kinda doubt a video game publisher will want to step into competition with an already established nWoD. Just because they can doesn't mean it's a smart idea. Much more likely they'll just use it for video games. Especially since the Vampire games both are considered top tier settings.

Sure. As I mentioned, Onyx Path bought entire Scion and Trinity Continuum IP from CCP/White Wolf. Story Path is a variation of Storyteller system currently developed for new editions of those games.

Paradox are a bit hit and miss as a publisher, although they seem to be improving. It's been a while since the published something literally broken and unplayable on launch, IIRC.

Paradox are very aware of their reputation as spotty due to releasing stuff that doesn't work on launch. They are working very hard to improve that image.

Paradox takes a shotgun approach to both their publishing and the games they develop in house.

They manage to put out quite a few gems but a small pile of crap falls on the floor before they find something that sticks. They also have a tendency for very unstable releases but usually follow this up with a crazy intense update period to fix bugs.

This would honestly make a NWOD vampire game more sensible then - bloodlines and all the disciplines are supposed to be really numerous and snowflakey in that setting, so have a core game with the main clans, then have a couple of side missions for each bloodline with a new discpline to throw in on top of it.

The snatched it up for the WoD MMO they wanted to do. But that fell through for reasons that still have not been brought to light. CCP still hasn't even admitted they cancelled the project yet I believe.

Once the MMO is out of the way there is no real reason for an MMO company to be owning a tabletop RPG publisher.

There's a couple articles that talk about the story behind the WoD MMO. The short version: CCP was still slavishly devoted to EVE, so any developments and new projects almost invariably came at the cost of the WoD project.

Games with a terrible beginning are pretty much screwed. If you play the first hour of a game and it's shit, you're just going to move on to something else.

To use an example, you're basically advocating for every game to be Final Fantasy 13.

I couldn't get behind the combat. I found it inexcusable that it managed to do it worse than older games.

Also the writing. If a game has too much writing it has the unfortunate side effect of making me judge the writing the same way I judge writing for book, and that will never end well for the game. And without the combat to back it up, it just became boring and tedious. I'm also older, which may have something to do with it.

The focus of nWerewolf is on spirits and hunting; oWerewolf was eco-terrorism and rage. oChangeling was about your dwindling fairy soul in the face of banality. nChangeling is about your escape from your captors, as much abuse metaphor as it is fairy tale.

About the only one you could combine is Vampire, and that's only because nVamp didn't have much of its own identity.

Which is what I'm worried about, incidentally. That Paradox sees VtM as a cash cow to be milked, rather than a piece of a larger puzzle that includes fans of the old AND new.

The Ordo Dracul attempts to follow in the footsteps of their titular "founder" Dracula (who actually has nothing to do with the Ordo). Dracula boasted no sire but God and seemed to transcend the vampire condition: he could walk in the sunlight, had a host of powers, never succumbed to the Beast...

So the Ordo Dracul acts as something like a mystery cult and a cabal of scientists. They want to transcend their current state - not to become human, but to purge the weaknesses of the vampire and be a better monster. the have paths called Coils of the Dragon that lead to things like better control over what they can feed from, or reduced damage from sun and fire. While meditating on the Coils, they produce Scales of the Dragon, which are horrible science experiments - usually on other people or vampires. Like how you can reverse a vampire's sleep cycle, getting him to wake at dawn and sleep at dusk. Or how you could remove a vampire's heart so he can no longer be staked.

They also have a curious drive to seek out what they call Dragon Nests - places of power and weirdness in the World of Darkness. If any vampire is going to come into contact with other denizens of the night, it's an Ordo member.

Licensing deals aren't just "Yeah, you can use this until we say otherwise." Any company that starts releasing content based on a contract like that is retarded and deserves to go out of business.

An actual license agreement will have a defined amount of time, a set date to discuss renewal and renegotiation, and an expiration date. Just because WW has been bought doesn't mean their existing contracts are void, Paradox has to honor them.

EU4 has 6 major expansions (with a 7th currently in the pipeline), the most recent of which completely reworked basic mechanics and requires you to buy the DLC to unfuck it (like if you want to build more than one building in a province).

CK2 has 10 major expansions to date.

Each of these is like $20.

These are the main expansions, usually coming out in the 15€ price range, and then dropping to 10€ after some time. Also I think the Ruler Designer came out at 10€. A big expansion+its related cosmetics usually comes to ~20€.

First things first, I'm talking about the original Crusaders Kings, the first game, with no DLCs that ended up ending with a bunch of people crying for them to make Vikings and Muslims playable.

Have you ever heard of feature creep? If games like Crusaders Kings or The Sims tried to place all of its expansions on the base game it would only lead to a messy end where resources would be spread thin between core stuff and completely fanservicey stuff.

Expansions have been a part of Strategy and Simulation games so long for a reason, its easier and more financially viable to release more content using them. You have the core, you expand it.

Furthermore I find it odd that this complain is made to games that offer most of the core stuff in free patches. Even the players who never bought a single expansion still got a lot of new mechanics patched in CK2 and stuff like basements in Sims 3.

Even if it's not on the disk, sometimes it's painfully obvious that certain things were cut out just so they could be made into DLC later.

Accuse me of nostalgia goggles all you want, but anyone remember the time when we didn't have DLC but expansion packs that actually expanded on the game? Of course DLC has the purely theoretical advantage of allowing developers to more quickly and easily create smaller updates and features that don't warrant a full-fledged expansion pack in and of themselves, but de facto 9/10 times they're just used to cut the base game into pieces.

Try playing the French Revolution start date in any EU game and you'll see that the start date, despite potentially being the most interesting one bar none, is completely and utterly broken. Its not hard to understand what is good and bad with DLC/Expansions. Just look at the sims magic

>Sims 1: Everybody fucking loved the magical expansion pack

I certainly hope they exert enough creative freedom to mix and match cwod/nwod elements for the video games. Nwod has lots of neat ideas they can use to enhance the cwod experience.

Stuff like... khaibit calling the setites heretics and blasphemers. Lasombra and some mage friends dealing with intruders from the abyss. Nomadic parties of ravnos, bohagande, carnies, prometheans, sin-eaters and lost. Adds a lot more variety.

Tabletop mechanics are not really relevant for video games. Bloodlines used the same basic idea but the end result was very different.

So basically, you've got two or three different kinds of anthropomorphic animals:

Upright Talking Animals, who are pretty much animals in every aspect aside from standing upright and talking and doing people things. Pugmire's in here, along with the comic Tooth and Claw.

Also, if they are a video game publisher rather than a book publisher, why wouldn't they just renew the old licenses, why try to get into the rpg book market when you can get money for other people doing it at no risk?
