I try to keep politics and escapism separate, so I've been hesitant to join up with my college gaming group because college is a minefield of people who like to conflate their hobbies with their agendas and politicize everything. I recently joined up with a group because that's the only way I could get a game on campus, and it was pretty clear that the group is composed of pretty left-leaning individuals (I'm 99 percent sure one of them is trans) but mostly they seem to be the kind of milquetoast, college-aged liberals who are maybe a bit too passionate about social issues and not like, radical leftists or anything like that.
I am kind of tentatively nervous though because we met a gay NPC pretty early into the campaign and the GM went out of his way to clarify that that's no big deal in the setting. We were at some kind of ball for noblemen and one of the princes had a male lover and the GM made sure that the first person I questioned about that gave a casual "so long as he still plans to provide sons for the king I see no issue with it" and we carried on with the night. The gay prince wasn't even important to the session (we spent most of the night discussing trade agreements and escorting a merchant which was fine since I signed on for a political campaign anyway) but on the other hand I have been wondering what the point of bringing it up was if it wasn't important
I dunno I hear a lot of horror storries about SJW in gaming spaces and I don't know if I should take this as a warning sign? Am I being paranoid?
