I'm still working on the idea of one roll resolution.

The idea right now would be you roll a D12 for each point of attack, the enemy rolls a D12 for each point of defense, each chooses the highest, and you subtract the defense roll from the offense roll. What's leftover determines damage, 1 to 2 does low damage, 3 to 6 does medium damage, and 7+ does heavy damage.

The damage spread I'm looking at for the average troop model would be 1 point of damage for low, 2 for medium, and 3 for heavy, with the average model being able to take 6 points of damage.

As for me, I've simplified some of the rules and expanded others, Stats are only 4, an extra one (reaction) that's only an average dependant on two of the basic ones, and then a list of traits (things the player can DO) that's currently circling around the 35 items.

Basic classes are still 6 and their starting points are still being decided upon.

D20 roll-under is still the universal roll system, but i'm having a hard time deciding on what I want to do for damage and health so everything regarding health, death-spirals, weapons, armor, spells, damage, and pretty much everything that moves combat is still abstract and hard to put my finger on, but i might go with the system another anon was using here with HP per limb because it seems fairly simple.

Fluff is being worked on more than crunch lately, so expect some bullshit made-up universe rules that define weapons and armor uniquely, for better or worse.

I might have a finished build for this weekend ready to share or playtest if I put myself into it tomorrow.

I made a complete overhaul of the rules having seen that i'd done the opposite of my original objective and had fallen into the Dark Heresy trap of roll bonus bloat.

Basic actions are 1d10 roll under. Opposed actions are 1d10 plus relevant stat - highest wins
Body part related damage is still in along with crit tables when limbs are disabled.

Trying to keep it simple and easy to learn

I also redid the art style to better reflect the kind of Venus Wars/Front Mission thing I want while still remaining loose

Oh and I've still not got a name for it.

Posting my Google Doc again. It's the beginnings of an Ace Combat homebrew. Things to comment on:

1) Does what I already have written make sense?

2) What obvious things am im missing?

Things to know: I don't have a working computer, so everything is being done on mobile. With that in mind, can't quite to visual representations. Currently working on Weapons, but it'll be a little bit before I add that work into the doc.

Thanks. More resources are always good. I'm trying to keep it reflectively light, especially with physical objects required to play. I intend to make some cut out templates for movement, but things like movement cards and stands like CS and X-wing use are a bit more than I intend to use. Ace Combat affords to ignore some of these mechanics used (pilot stresses make sense in WWII combat, ect) so hopefully I can also.

I think altitude is something necessary in a plane game like this. I've decided to use a d12 to represent the squares of altitude (you could also use 2d6).

Perhaps in a future project I could create an electronic way to help represent 3d space, but in the mean time this if the best solution I could find. It shouldn't be too hard to visualize with tabletop.

Hi, I'm a Kings of War fan but a while back I looked at it and thought it was kinda missing an army that filled an area mechanically.

Skilled Firearms. The Dwarves are very tough firearms and the humans have plentiful firearms but there isn't really an army that does it with skill. That and my general love of elves with guns prompted me to do some homebrew.

The general design idea:

Advantages: Very powerful shooting, nasty artillery, better Large Infantry than normal elves
Weaknesses: Less magic than normal elves, ranged units even more expensive, lost of lot of normal elven mobility.

hey this is actually pretty sweet, i don't see any flaws so far
the only thing i've noticed is walls in cities being broken by sudden docks and half-river but that's something users can fix manually

Last thread I posted a write-up for the setting of my space opera homebrew, linked below:

It covers a brief history of events in the galaxy, and also gives a short overview of the major players on the scene.

Since then I completed the first write-up on one of the major factions, the Gestalt:

My goal here is to present a largely unbiased view of the organization, so that someone using the setting can choose to portray the group as either sympathetic or villain. I also wanted my writing, as before, to be pithy and to the point but also not come off as overly dry, so that the reader comes away from it both informed and excited to play as a part of the group (or to try and overthrow them).

How's it look? Any suggestions in idea or presentations, or any glaring concepts that I clearly overlooked?

I don't know if this is the correct thread or not, but here goes.
I'm thinking of starting a campaign set in the Cold War with diesel punk elements. Talking stuff like coil guns and bulky power armour, while regular weapons also exist.

Is there an existing system/rpg that I can use or reskin, or would I have to create a new system entirely?

Nah, it's not my first rodeo, just my first time scaling up quite this much. And it is working, just...slowly. Have to do things like research electroreception, look into obscure gastropods, and study lung and gill structures.

I'm really happy with what I'm getting out of it, but the sheer volume of material that I have to go through is sometimes daunting. And then there are the times when I have to wait for a response back from my review team on a particular racial or cultural design idea, or when nobody can agree on what they want out of something.

Mind you, current projections have this taking another five to six years, so it's not like there's any rush.

First draft of UNNAMED MECH GAME. Lots of stuff still to do. I just play-tested combat with some guys and had to half the hull points since combat dragged on too long. Ideally I think it would be played with at least 3 mechs per side.

Not sure if I'm sufficiently answering your question, but I think there should be a middle ground between player failure and enemy success. This is represented in ones of my games by contested combat rolls. It isn't enough for a player to do poorly, but the enemy also has to do well. Outcomes are determined by the difference in the contested rolls, which gives an opportunity for both parties to roll well or both parties to roll poorly.

the middle ground would be "success with consequence" since the player DOES the thing they intended but didn't do it perfectly, i.e. in combat enemies are allowed to roll for reaction in that middle ground, or if they're trying to break in somewhere they might break in BUT they make a sound that makes the guards investigate, things like that

the concept i'm circling now is "failing forward" and putting that enemy success there in combat, like if you tried to swing your axe at an enemy but failed it wouldn't mean you missed, HE dodged, and now you're one step forward while he's trying to grab his knife

would keep things moving, but it could get really cruel easily

Any suggestions as to how character creation could more balanced? Having a base stat and just adding onto that with a roll?

During the combat test things did seem to be all over the place stat wise

Yeah, something like 2 as the standard for the stats, and the addition of a D5 (D10 roll halved, rolling up) or a D6, to give a more controlled range. Hull could be 6 to 8 plus a D10, depending on the range you are going for. The biggest things to avoid is situations where players are stuck with impossibly low or high stats to mess with balance, more worried about low. It'd be a terrible game if you just happen to roll unlucky and get nothing but 1's and 2's for your stats.

If you're determined to do rolled stats, 2d6 might give you a more balanced outcome. It skews the numbers towards 7 as an average.

Or what you can do is, if you have an even number of stats, say 8, you roll your d10 4 times and use the 4 results to create 8 numbers: the results themselves, and the results -10.

So if your results are 2,3,4 and 5 you have 8 numbers: 2,3,4,5,5,6,7 and 8. Then you plot them however you want.

Whipped together an Eldritch Knight rewrite for D&D5E. Was looking for some sort of input. I've been of the opinion that the EK is kind of a trap option, as far as that term might apply to 5E. So I sought to make it more flavorful, more unique.
