Why is Gourry wearing pajamas?

This always unsettled the shit out of me, along with the plastic jrpg pauldrons. It seems to be a pretty old thing, where did it come from?

You seem to be confused. This is /tg/, not /a/.
To answer your question, it's probably because they wanted a fairly simple character design. One-piece clothes are easy to draw in odd angles and movements.

Look, I like the occasional /a/ thread now and then, but this is a question about a character's visual design, not about the show itself. There are aspects of anime that can easily be said to overlap with /tg/ interests, but a thread about art style is really pushing it. You're two degrees separated from /tg/ at this point.

Rance looks an awful lot like Artix from the AQ series; the main difference being that while Rancie is a serial rapist who only does nomially good things cause' of his dick, Artix is a LG paladin to the point of parody.

Onto the pauldrons and one-piece suit, isn't that the uniform of an awful lot of later FE characters? It's like some sort of weird early modern outfit only nobody has access to the gunpowder that would semi-justify its existance.

I've always wondered about the pauldronsuit too. The only character I can rememeber wearing something similar is Leaf, though, who is hardly mainstream.

All fire emblem up to Shadow Dragon has relatively reasonable armors though, even where it doesn't seem to be so like in the case of fatknights.

Awakening is where it went full retard, with the collars stemming from pauldrons around the head and shit.

What exactly is up with this Rance guy? I see him in threads all the time where people call him the perfect paladin. Apparently, this has something to do with him believing he's so noble and desirable that it's literally impossible for him to believe a woman would not want to be with him, so as far as he's concerned he's incapable of rape. People sarcastically (I hope) agree with his worldview and jokingly (again I hope) call him Lawful Good.

Is this shit really how's he's portrayed in whatever he's from? Or is this just a long, ongoing joke about one thing that happened way before I showed up here?

Every game past the first one was actually written by a woman. That worldview is exactly how he acts in the games - but the majority of characters think he's a complete jerk for it. A bit of a running joke is that he's very quick to attack people for behavior that he performs himself. Canonically, even some demon lords are disgusted by him, IIRC.

But he's just so upbeat, clueless, hammy, and quick to declare himself a HERO OF JUSTICE that it's impossible to take him seriously. It's like looking at a version of Don Quixote where the main character thinks everyone is Dulcinea. And where Sancho Panza is a willing sex slave.

The first season of Slayers is a bit rough to get through. The first cour just didn't know what it wanted to be or how to do it. It settles down in the second cour and finishes strong.
Then NEXT is the pinnacle of the series. It still holds up very well.
TRY is a bit iffy. It goes for a darker overall story, but doesn't do a good job balancing that out with the silly nature of Slayers. So the silly bits tend to be TOO silly. I still enjoyed it, but it's not the cleanest watch.
Then if you're still up for more, the OVAs and movies are hit and miss. They take place before the series, but are watchable in any order in relation to each other.

If you still want more, Revolution and Evolution-R will scratch that Slayers itch, but introduce a character that just drags the plot down whenever he's around. And when the main plot revolves around solving his problem, it gets tedious.

To add to this:
Novels are pretty high quality and have more sophisticated humor, but are hard to find, and the illustrators have obvious waifus.

The mangas are seriously hit-and-miss; I personally can't recommend Super Explosive Demon Story. Ones that follow the OVAs are better.

Not sure about the video games.

In general, the main characters fit in the traditional "Real man/Roleplayer/Loonie/Munchkin" setup, which I think is pretty much easy to relate to and understand, and a good source of comedy. It still plays around with them more than works like Lodoss.

A quick warning: if you have an allergy to 90s synth music, don't watch the first season.

The OVAs came out in 1990 and have a very good, detailed artstyle. Just a low budget so lots of speed lines and still pans.
They tell a good, but simple RPG story with a consistent build to its climax.
They're rough around the edges and very slowly paced compared to modern shows, but not bad.
The TV series came out in 1998 and follows some of the same events of the OVAs, then changes how those were to follow the manga more closely then continues the story with a new hero and a new party and a new plot and overall is just a mess.
The art and animation went to absolute shit in the TV series. The best part about it was its fantastic opening theme.
By the end of the series, the only thing I was enjoying were the omake shorts at the end of each episode dubbed.

Even in the show, he's like a properly done DMPC. Ridiculously powerful, but only there to push the party along. He bailed Lina out that one time, but never sticks around long enough to hog the spotlight come the climax.

Haha, yeah it is his secret Guyframe suit, which is power armour and may indeed have thrusters. I'm not sure if Urushihara invented the pauldron thing or just popularized it, but crazy pauldrons are all over his fantasy art.

I'm trying to think of some earlier examples of the fantasy Jap pauldron in animation. but they're eluding me at the moment. The only thing that comes to mind is some sci-fi outfits from the 1970s which have sort of the same style.

He's have high HP and stuff too what with him being functionally next to invincible; he's literally only a step removed from those massively powerful Mazoku Lords that they face off with and basically fail to hurt at all at the end of Next, and even if those types of demons who were a step removed like him he was the most powerful.

Seriously, giant, analogue/clockwork armours that were powered by the crystallized heart of a freaking dragon? Thats fucking tits.

I loved the cuts to the suit like controls and the feel of mass behind each movement. These were not zippy, fluid things, and each blow had to be thought out and timed.

Shame there is not more technical data, and the forced love story/pseudo political tripe/MUH BRUTHA crap got in the way.

She certainly claimed to be and was pretty agile with it, but I guess she wasn't really on par with a trained fighter, even ones that WEREN'T as physically strong as Gourry's "so strong I don't need actual muscles" type of strength.

The one time she beats a guy with her sword she does it to another wizard, who naturally wasn't a fencer himself and so wasn't particularly good at fighting or dodging that sort of thing but WAS good at countering her spells, hence her switching to swordplay.

I guess you could say she has high Dex and proficiency in rapiers, but she sure as hell wasn't a fighter doing the same thing.

Back when I first caught Record of Lodoss war OVA those that turned me onto it reinforced a contempt for the TV series version of it. I'll admit I haven't seen it in full, just read and learned about it, but what I heard reinforced what >>43360745 said. Long and short is the OVA is a classic, simple but straightforward and charmingly stereotypical fantasy adventure. There's no usual anime tropes and features and outside of the art style you'd have no idea it was an anime (Hell the intro's lyrics are in Italian). The TV Series gives you a shitty male lead, a more forgettable central party instead of the original one, anime-y tweaks to the story.

I think Lodoss War's strength was that it never made fun of itself and despite the cliches in the story it never took itself anything other then 100% seriously.
It completely embraces the genre it's in and thus portrays the cliches with serious and genuine drama that actually enhances the whole experience.

Ashram is a good example of the type of villain that grows in power with the characters rather then starts automatically better.

I feel the west has fallen behind on three points.

The first one is we never broke free of our Victorian puritan era, or as you say, the SJW boogieman has scared people from soccer-moms and tumblrinas into doing anything interesting.

The second point is that the west is shit at scenario design. The west's best trait is their ability to create interesting characters because western culture doesn't fall into the character archetypes that eastern character design does, but then they make the mistake of assuming that the unique characters will make it more interesting than the overall scenario when in reality that's just not true for most people. The most interesting Western show I've recently seen is iZombie of all things, about a medical student who gets bit by a zombie, and eating more brains gives her temporary psychic connection to that person which she uses to solve crimes. But after that, there's a huge pile of nothing that isn't really attention getting.

Meanwhile, in terms of Japanese shows, even though I'm picking out the "tsundere" and "reliable hero" archetypes out left and right, I'm hoping from show to show to show because each situation is completely different in how it's handled which makes it more interesting to me. I'm being exposed to the same characters in many varied reactions to situations as opposed to being exposed to unique characters in the same situations over and over.

The third thing I believe the west is weak at, and this is more about games than it is other media, is their insistence and hang up on explaining EVERYTHING. I mean, there's a few things that bug me, like people who still fall for that "We only use 10% of our brain" myth, but I've seen way too many times where a game has been made worse because the designers didn't want/care to explain it's function in the world and left it out. "The character isn't holding any paper, so there's no reason for them to have a map", and bam. I'm lost.

I saw a news report on the web about Serbia about five years back. Was on some international news site; don't remember which one.

The core of the problem is that the social democratic party's basic function is to represent the working class of Sweden and evolve according to what the people want. This was a lot easier back in the day when the media was limited and people themselves put a lot more effort into conforming to society.

Today everyone in Sweden is not on the same page, they all have their own idea of what they want and as a result the social democratic party struggles with having an identity.

So the social democratic party leaders will as a result end up pissing people off no matter what opinion they have. So they try to inspire by being progressive. Sahlin was simply awful at it and tried to hard.
